Ancient Legacy #1

From Valhalla

Rate this book
Vampires weren’t just real—they were kings. The Ragnulfs, once Viking warlords, now vampire nobility, rule with blood and conquest. Sent to their fortress as an Oscurelle, Elise von Albrecht knows her to serve. But Erik, the warlord, and Magnus, his shadowed, sinful brother, want more than her obedience. They want her.

Bound to one, tempted by the other, Elise is caught in a sensual battle between dominance and desire. But as Ancients are murdered and war looms, she must decide—be their pawn and let them tear her apart, or become their queen and join their wars.

In the arms of Viking monsters, love is war.

N. von Wolf writes dark, psychological romance set in worlds where myth bleeds into obsession and love walks a razor’s edge. Her stories explore the intimate territories of power, trauma, and fate – whether in vampire courts, ancient battlegrounds, or dystopian futures.

Rooted in the Balkans and shaped by years in Ireland and Scandinavia, she draws on haunted history, folklore, and cultural echoes to craft emotionally charged tales where the past never sleeps and the heart is never safe. Her favourite playgrounds are epic fantasy, historical and paranormal fiction – but she loves to dip her toes into sci-fi waters, as well.

By night, she writes of forbidden desires and fractured worlds; by day, she thrives as a Technical Engineering Team Lead, a wife, and a mother of two.

Ok, the start of this book just sucked me right in! Vampiric Vikings? 😍 I loved the Saxon/Viking feud teaser in the first chapter, and the historical references throughout!
The beautiful and poetic style and prose had me right there in the story, it really came to life for me. Some of the sentences read almost like poetry! Very well written by a masterful writer! I'd rate this book 6 stars if I could!
This story has gothic vibes, with hints of Jane Eyre, Phantom of the Opera, and Beauty and the Beast.
There were points where I almost despaired at getting a HEA, the story was quite the ride! The burn was very slow but when the spice finally came it was 🥵! 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
I can't wait to read books 2-4 in this series now! Thank you so much to N. von Wolf for the ARC 😊

Favorite quotes:
"And he kissed her. And kissed her. And kissed her – slowly, hungrily, as though he needed her breath just as much as her body."

‘We are ancient, Elise. Our hearts…’ he paused, exhaling as if the truth cost him something, ‘they have frayed with time. Centuries spent clawing at systems, war, governance… control… and somewhere along the way, we forgot how to be human.’

"Do not react. Do not feel. Still as stone. But she wasn’t stone. She was a spark caged in flesh."

The way I screamed when I read chapter 17!

I think that is sufficient review but to add a little bit more, this book is definitely worth your time. The blend of vampire and human world, forbidden desires, struggling against them....and then the ultimate explosion...and while all the spice is undeniable, the plot definitely isn't just a backdrop. You might be drawn in first by the charismatic brothers, you will stay for more than that, guaranteed.

This is one of those books that's going to ruin you for other books for a while because it is SO well written. It is truly a gem. I don't even remember how I found it but I'm so glad I did.

The tension in this book was alive and choked me as I was consuming it. I don't remember the last time I read a book where the emotions where so alive and held me in a death grip.

Some books make you forget where you are and then there are books that give you an out of body experience, they make you leave everything behind and you need a second to remember who you were when you put it aside again. This is one of those books.

Wasn’t that bad

To be honest in the beginning was very boring for me , but if you skip 100 pages become interesting. The only thing that confuses me in the beginning the love interest are the single love story or harem romance . The spicy was okay for me but i cant not give more stars, because some times was so boring that i have skipped the pages just to finish the book

Wow, I absolutely loved it! Although it’s a bit longer, you don’t even notice it when you dive straight into the captivating world of the book. Vampires, humans, and special abilities—a perfect blend that creates an intriguing plot. I particularly enjoyed the witty banter between Erik and Magnus. While I love both brothers, I must admit that I’m rooting for Magnus. I can’t wait for the second book!

The prologue is what captured me at first. It gives the book that dark, aristocratic, predatory tone and makes the world feel old and cruel. I liked that the author immediately shows the world isn't subtle about power structure.
It's a SLOW BURN for sure, which is how I like it, and the beginning eases you into the fantasy world instead of just throwing things at you at once.
The characters are written in such a way that makes me understand why Elise would be drawn to both even though she knows it isn't right. So WHY CHOOSE trope is definitely anticipated right from the start.
Magnus becomes more emotionally textured already in the first part of the book, and Erik starts settling into his role as a genuine force rather than just a striking first impression which is something I've often found in books like this. What I’m liking most is that the story keeps feeding both the romance and the threat at the same time, so the tension never goes flat.
FMC is not just reacting to these men or surviving the fort anymore, she is actively digging, piecing things together, and making herself dangerous through knowledge. That makes her much more interesting as a heroine and very much different than what you would expect in a dark romance. It isn't just a sudden pivot into upper hand, it's a gradual understanding of the world, and a slow grasping for her.

OVERALL
This book absolutely nails that dark, lush, aristocratic vampire atmosphere from the start and then just keeps pushing it. It feels decadent and predatory in all the right ways, but what I liked most is that it never relies on mood alone. Under all the glamour, there is real cruelty, real hierarchy, real hunger, and that gives the whole book value. Elise is a great anchor for it all because she never feels like a limp heroine being swept from scene to scene. She is observant, resentful, curious, frightened, stubborn, and dangerous in her own way, which makes her incredibly easy to stay invested in.

What really sold the book for me is that the romance is not just “hot vampire men want the girl.” Erik and Magnus feel genuinely distinct, and that matters. Erik carries that commanding, old-warrior weight, while Magnus feels more intimate, cerebral, and very unravelling. The tension around them is not just about attraction, but about power, longing, loyalty, fixation, and the ways Elise is seen differently by each of them. That makes the dynamic feel richer and far more addictive than a standard love triangle setup.

I also loved how the world keeps opening up as the story goes on. What starts as a darkly seductive setup inside a rigid system becomes something bigger: family politics, old bloodlines, grief, shifting loyalties, buried history, and the sense that all these people are trapped inside something ancient and wrong. The Ragnulf household is one of the strongest parts of the book for me because it makes the story feel lived-in rather than decorative. By the time the later chapters hit, the emotional weight is doing as much work as the sensual tension, and that is where the book really stands out.
This is the kind of book that feels lush, dangerous, and slightly poisonous in the best way.

If you like your vampire romance gothic, emotionally charged, politically tangled, and full of possessive tension, this absolutely delivers. Dark, immersive, and properly addictive.
