"The world is not what it seems to be."
That is the basic premise of Aiden, a new science-fiction, dystopian story in the same line as the Legend and Divergent series, but the story is unique to itself. The human race is forced to live indoors due to a chemical war that broke out that left the air toxic to breathe. This story takes place in post-apocalyptic Detroit, where society is living in, what we know as, the Renaissance Center, but it's referred to as The Towers. Aiden has reached the age that he has to complete his Proving, to determine what he will study, and what line of work he will be in. If he is unsuccessful during his Proving, he will be sent outdoors and likely meet a violent death. During Aiden's Proving, his sister vanishes, and the story continues as Aiden comes to terms with the reality of his society and where his sister vanished to. The story concludes with a serious plot-twist that made me excited for the subsequent books in the series.
I give this book 4.5 stars--it is incredibly creative and imaginative. I especially enjoyed the setting in Detroit. Aiden is often looking into the skyline of the city, and reminiscing on what the city looked like before the war broke out. This is a common thought of those of us living in metro-Detroit today--reminiscing on what the city would have been like in it's heyday before the riots in the 1960's. The incorporation of science and military themes was also very interesting. There was even a love story, but it was certainly not the main point of the book.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this book to all dystopian and science-fiction fans!
