Blue Mountain

Rate this book
Exiled by his pack as a teen, Omega wolf Simon Moorehead learns to bury his gentle nature in the interest of survival. When a hulking, rough-faced Alpha catches Simon on pack territory, he tries to escape what he’s sure will be imminent death. But instead of killing him, the Alpha takes Simon home.

A man of action, Mitch Grant uproots his life to support his brother in leading the Blue Mountain pack. Mitch lives on the periphery, quietly protecting everyone, but always alone. A mate is a dream come true for Mitch, and he won’t let little things like Simon’s rejections, attacks, and insults get in their way. With patience, seduction, and genuine care, Mitch will ride out the storm while Simon slays his own ghosts and Mitch’s loneliness.

No one does sexy wolfy romance like CC!

The first book in the new Pack series is a hot little read with some mild angst and a light enemies-to-lovers feel, at least on the part of one of the MCs.

Simon and his mother were banished from the Blue Mountain pack when Simon was but 13. A dozen years later Simon has returned, only to find himself held captive by big Alpha wolf Mitch, who claims that Simon is his mate.

To Mitch's chagrin, Simon wants naught to do with him. Simon has been without a pack for too long and has learned to repress his wolf instincts. It will take much patience on Mitch's part to soothe Simon's past hurts.

Wanting to possess and never let go, Mitch makes a pact with Simon: stay for one month and let me take care of you.

CC never disappoints in the feels, romance, and smex departments. Blue Mountain is equal parts tender and steamy.

The slow-burn made the inevitable coming together all the hotter, and the dynamics between the two men were very believable. There is very little angst here; the focus is firmly on the relationship and on Simon learning to trust Mitch.

I really enjoyed the secondary characters, including Mitch's twin brother and his equally Alpha wife. I hope we get to see more of this pack in subsequent books.

This was an engaging beginning to what looks to be another fantastic shifter series from Cardeno C; highly recommended for CC and shifter fans!

One of these days I'm going to get over the thought that I'm being a major party pooper when I write a less than enthused review. Probably not today, but soon. Ish. Soon-ish.

Until then I'll just have to own it.

Okay, there’s a lot of good stuff here. I like the set up. Mitch is a 6’ 7” Alpha wolf whose fighting abilities and intimidating demeanor make him an outsider in his brother Frederick’s pack. He’s the pack’s main ass kicker, but other than his brother and young niece he scares everyone else around him. On Halloween night, four members of the pack show up at Frederick’s place to inform him there’s a foreign wolf on Blue Mountain territory. Apparently they’ve already gone to the trouble showing him what's what, as they have enough blood on them that Mitch realizes they’ve run into his mate. Said wolf is Simon, who has spent half his life moving from town to town constantly getting the shit kicked out of him for having the audacity to be born a male Omega who digs other dudes. Apparently other wolves can just smell it on him. Given Simon’s past it’s understandable that’s he not too excited when Mitch takes him to his isolated cabin in the woods--and yet Mitch still manages to talk him into sticking around for the next month. So ensues their rocky road to romance.

One part of Blue Mountain I enjoyed is the difference between what wolves are “supposed” to be and what they actually are. Mitch is an Alpha and therefore physical, growly and intent on having his own way. And yet Mitch happily supports his brother rather than go his own way. Simon is an Omega who are traditionally female, submissive and devoted to the comfort of others. It’s natural for them to (literally) roll over and bare their bellies to Alpha wolves. But Simon is stubborn and really doesn’t care what his wolf wants as he’s mainly concerned with his own survival. Neither is as they should be and that’s what (eventually) makes them perfect for each other.

Normally the above would make me do a little happy dance. Werewolf shifters and their troubling romances, yay! Yet I have two large problems with this book:

First, Simon’s sexual history. Simon has been not only physically abused by every werewolf pack he’s come in contact with, but he implies that he’s been sexually abused as well. Later he says he’s never done anything physical at all. I took this to mean that he’d never willingly done anything physical with anyone. And yet after 3 weeks spent in Mitch’s company he’s ready to have sex with, first of all, what reads as extremely little physical preparation (there’s some lube and finger action and then he’s riding Mitch’s giant schlong like a twink on YouPorn) and second of all, absolutely no sign of any emotional scarring. I have a very hard time believing that someone with Simon’s past would not be more hesitant during sex even if he is with his magical mate. Three weeks with your one true love does not negate half of lifetime of abuse.

My second problem is Mitch’s constant reassurances to Simon that the Blue Mountain pack is different and no wolf there will abuse him for being gay or a male Omega. Okay, well, what about the four pack members who found him on Blue Mountain territory in the first place? Who “roughed him up” enough that they had blood on them? Who said all sorts of comforting things like, “we left the Omega for [the Alpha] to finish off.” One of them, while referring to Simon, “scrunched his nose and pursed his lips, as if he tasted something bitter.” Alright, maybe beating someone up isn’t as big a deal in the wolfy world because shifters heal faster; maybe they took an instant dislike to Simon because he was on pack land without the Alpha’s permission; maybe it has nothing to do with Simon’s being gay or an Omega, but it sure read that way to me. Really, Mitch has no proof that his pack is different, only the assurance that he’ll change those men’s minds and if he can’t he’ll beat the living shit out of them. While the thought of that is enjoyable, it really didn’t make me feel better. I need proof. I need to see the actual ass kicking. I need those guys to be super, super sorry and promise to get over themselves. Instead it felt like the matter was dropped entirely.

Both these issues may have been dealt with more thoroughly if the book had been a little longer. Simon’s abusive past and some of the pack’s attitude toward male/gay Omegas were too complicated to resolve in a satisfactory manner in just (I’m guessing) a hundred pages.

Having said all that, I’m really curious about the next book in the series. Simon mentions briefly meeting someone from the Red River Pack and I’d wager the next book will be about him. Or maybe it will be about another member of the Blue Mountain Pack. Already I’m feeling that burning in my veins to find out what happens next.

Blue Mountain is the second book I’ve read by Cardeno C. I really like the writing style and the stories are great, but why do they have to be so short??? I’m always left wanting so much more of these characters and their stories.

Simon is an Omega wolf that was cast out of his Pack when he was a teen. Something important brought him back to the place he thought he’d never return to. Blue Mountain. When Alpha wolf Mitch catches his scent, he automatically knows who Simon is. His mate. He would do anything to keep him safe. Anything to protect him. Now… if only Simon would let him things would be much easier.

The first half was a lot of push and pull. It took a lot for Simon to overcome his demons and trust that Mitch would never hurt him or let anyone else do that. Mitch was wonderful. My favorite for sure. I love a strong alpha with a heart of gold. Mitch is one of those guys that can be gruff and scary to everyone else, but with Simon, he’s a huge teddybear.

I love stories about shifters. There’s something about the shifters that are so primal and I wish we would have gotten more of the guys as wolves. By the end, I was really happy with the direction the story went. Like I said before, it would have been much better for me if we would have gotten more. I loved both Simon and Mitch, and the secondary characters we got glimpses of (Mitch’s brother and his mate) too.

If you’re looking for a short and sweet m/m book with a little bit of sexy, I would check this one out. This author does short and sweet very well!
“Simon?” Mitch leaned down until their faces were inches apart.

“Yeah?” Simon parted his lips and flared his nostrils.

“You’re beautiful.”

Those pretty green eyes widened, and Simon’s breath came out in fast pants. “I don’t know how to respond to that.”

“That’s okay,” Mitch hunched down and leaned his forehead against Simon’s “I just want you to know I noticed.”

Mine.
Why does that single word send shivers down my spine? Instantly my breath catches and my heart begins to race. It’s a powerful word. Similar to pack. I have given up trying to explain or justify my obsession with shifters. I love them. I love their commitment, passion, and predestined fate. I find the inner animal sharing the heart and soul of the man thrilling. I adore growling wolves declaring their dominance and confirming utmost devotion to their mate with a piercing stare or a quick bite. The words not spoken by a shifter are often my favorite. I’m not certain how I’ve missed the Blue Mountain pack before now but I’m so very pleased to have found them.
Speaking of finding…Mitch has found his mate.
Finally!
Their meeting was not exactly what he envisioned, but regardless, he’s not complaining. He’s fairly accommodating for an alpha. He’s not ‘the’ alpha of the pack, his twin wears those shoes. But he holds notable rank in his new pack. The Blue Moutain pack has recently been reformed. The previous corrupt alpha was challenged and defeated. The victors have taken over the pack with a different approach by an authoritative set of brothers that made my toes curl. Fate may bring Simon into Mitch’s orbit but he’s going to have to fight like hell to keep him. Good thing he’s a natural-born fighter. Coincidentally, so is his mate. Can they make it work? Or will Simon’s troubled past block their connection? Eeeek! You should really find out!

What's to like: Typically I’m severe with my opinions on the wolf/man bond. I want to feel the shift. But more than that, I want to feel the wolf simmering under the man. Despite their superficial transition, I did get what I craved with the clear cut shifter senses. Senses can make or break a shifter story for me and this a roaring success. Simon hasn’t had the easiest past and he’s never rolled over and exposed his belly…he’s not about to start now. Except, for some reason, he really wants to. His head tells him not to trust anyone but his heart disagrees. There’s something special about Mitch and he’d love to sink into those solid arms and just…see. Maybe this wolf will be different? *sigh* Yeah Simon, he’s fine *gulp* I mean, it’s gonna be just fine. Simon has denied his wolf things out of necessities but his future could be very different for both of them if he can only trust his new mate. Soon he discovers trust is love; both are unfamiliar to Simon but suddenly he aches for them. Listening to his wolf brings all sorts of emotions to the surface and I loved witnessing his recovery.

What's to love: Love is patient. Love is kind. Love is also licking wounds and hunting prey. Ha! Patience is not a trait I would generally associate with shifters, especially an alpha. But Mitch displays endless patience with his new mate. He craves him and would do anything for him, including…wait. Consent is so very sexy. Simon needs time to trust and accept the sudden flip-flop of his world. He’s used to wandering and relying on absolutely no one. Strangers can’t be trusted but pack’s betrayal hurts worse than a stranger’s wrongdoing. He doesn’t know Mitch but he does know how Mitch makes him feel, which is safe. I loved their timid yet resolute mating. I loved the meddlesome family and brotherly love. And I love the fact that this series isn’t over!

Beware of: Wolves are driven by instinct and sometimes their sex drive…expect passion. Healing and harmony occur here…both in heart and soul. And a slow simmer bursts into a sizzling inferno.

This book is for: If you like your shifters stubborn and ridiculously bossy, this omega’s homecoming should definitely make your wishlist. Gotta run, there’s a river calling my name!

3 stars for the story and another 1/2 star for the narration, very nicely done by Sean Crisden!

I've read stories like this one before... but I keep coming back to them. You know what I mean. The big bad alpha male shifter falling for the formerly abused, more submissive mate. There is insta-love and insta-"MINE"... but I keep coming back! It is a theme that never gets old for me.

Cardeno C. does shifters often and does them well. I really like this author's HOT, uber-masculine guys that often border on romantic enough to be sappy. This story is no different. It was very sweet with some light angst and a fairly slow burn love story for a shifter book. I think that there is a lot of potential there, but there were some plot holes and details that left me wanting more.

I wanted to know a great deal more about the pack and pack structure. This felt like the intro to a longer book in a lot of ways. The way that the pack reacted in the beginning of the story to the news of a male omega in the territory was very different from how Mitch assures Simon that they will treat him. I'm curious as to what their reception of Simon will be and what challenges that would bring someone as skittish as Simon. Also, Simon hinted at a history of abuse of many kinds, and I thought that once his relationships with Mitch finally became physical, we would see some kind of trauma from that abuse peak through. It didn't happen. It was strange to me how Simon morphed from super shy/reluctant to mini porn star so quickly.

However, despite some issues, I enjoyed this novella. A great deal of that is surely from Sean Crisden's awesome audiobook narration. I loved his voice for Mitch (familiar from those used to listening to Crisden but no less sexy!), and I thought he did a great job bringing this book to life.

Can't wait to read about the other sexy (and undoubtably GAY) wolves in this pack!

3.5 HEARTS--Let's get a few things out of the way, shall we?

This was my very first Cardeno C.

What rock have I lived under? I know, I know.

I heard lots of things about this author, her work tends to lean toward the fluffy category, there will be a possessive MC usually and crazy antics might ensues, etc.

I like cray-cray from time to time. The fluff...not as much. But I can see why this author has a following. I don't know how to judge this on a Cardeno C. scale - I guess you'd find more use from an expert or fan if this is standard fare or not in that aspect.

For me, it was decent for shifter story. I enjoyed the key elements. There was a possessive Alpha (but on a scale on possessive heroes (I've read all types), he's kind of tame), it is sweet, fluffed out serious topic (past rape - instead of describing the event it was vaguely mentioned) - it didn't have to be detailed graphically for me but at least have the victim actually admit something happened. There's a ginger, omega which are two types of characters I love separately, together it was a nice bonus. And he was stubborn. I enjoy that too. And a big loner, gentle giant main character...*claps hands together* Oh yeah!

"Being mine doesn't mean you're a slave. It means you're mine to touch. Mine to care for. Mine to protect. Mine to know."

See, good elements.

Mitch is a twin Alpha of the Blue Mountain pack. His more charismatic brother runs the pack. However, the twins are super close and helped defeated the evil baddie alpha for good. But Mitch is gay and lonely, he's 6'7" and wants a mate. Lo and behold and little, omega outcast, Simon, is in Blue Mountain territory, the little ginger shifter has been treated horribly for most of his twenty-five years. He's been a victim of homophobia, brutalized by a gang and starved based on the omega nature and the way he smells.

The author explains it...a lot. The werewolf society, how a pack is set up, their abilities, etc. Basically, omegas are nurturers and strengthen packs, Alphas are protectors. Sometimes, I felt the explanations were too wordy. Also, Simon was a werewolf by birth. Yes, he and his mother were kicked out once he hit puberty and he lived on the pack outskirts before that but it was like he needed Mitch to explain to him about being werewolf. That part I could have done without.

Also the hokey, fluff that kind of padded the story. I'd have loved a sharper story, less sugar. However the story told...it worked for them. Mitch was patient and kind of Simon's wishes, the two can't deny their mate bond, and there's hot sex in the last 25% into a HEA. Sweet fluff paranormal.

It's a shifter sugar cookie!

"Mitch?" Simon rasped.
"Uh-huh?"

"Will you kiss me again?"
"I'll be kissing you for the rest of our lives."

Then, it hit me. This story is a literary sugar cookie, a frigging sugar cookie.
And who gets upset with a sugar cookie?

Plain, comfortable and sweet.

Just like this story...not my favorite but it'll do. I might checkout more from this series. Possibly.

Again, this is the case of me being late to the party. 😅 I have read hundreds of shifter romances at this point. At least 300-400 books of them (trust me, I don’t mark everything here on my bookshelves 🤷‍♀️). And this book was published back in 2014. If I’m not making any sense, please bare with me for a bit. 😁 What I am saying is that, if I read this book when it was first published, I might have liked it way more than I do right now. 🙂 For now, I just felt like this was a mediocre okay-ish shifter romance story. Nothing that spectacular and memorable. 😶 And I didn’t like the omega, Simon. Sean Crisden is one of my favorite narrators and I usually love his performance. And I loved his portrayal of Alpha Mitch but I absolutely hated his omega Simon voice in this one. So the narration also didn’t help the story. All in all, I’m not impressed. 😑 I need to try more CC books before I make final judgement. 😁

The story of a lonely Alpha wolf who finally discovers his Omega mate. The story is pleasant, mild, and sweet. The Omega wolf is scared of other wolves, he does not trust easily and he has recently lost his only family. Consequently he is very reluctant to this mating. The Alpha wolf has to approach his mate very carefully and patiently.

It is not a bad story, but I read “Red River” before this book and that was a great book. As I result I was expecting something more creative and original.

Although it was a pleasant book, I wish it had a few things I have not read before in other shifters’ books.

3,3 Stars - Cozy sweet wolf love

A 3:30 hrs audiobook novella narrated by Sean Crisden.

description description description

I haven't read that much by Cardeno C, but tenderly sweet seems to be her cup of tea. Sometimes it works for me and so it did this time. Blue Mountain is perfect if you just want to snuggle over a nice short shifter M/M.

***********************************************************

Mitch Grant is the 'second' Alpha shifter wolf and his life is mostly to support his twin-brother in leading the Blue Mountain pack. He is quite lonely and want to also meet his own 'mate'. Preferably a male wolf.

This novella adventure starts when a strange Omega wolf, Simon Moorehead, is discovered on pack territory. Simon is a scared, wandering man who has learned to bury his gentle nature in the interest of survival. When a huge, strong, rough-faced Alpha wolf tries to catch him is escape his only thought.

..But Mitch know there is something special with Simon and he just want to take this beautiful guy home to his house.

***********************************************************

Sweet as sugar and so amazing cute that my romantic heart can't but melt with pleasure. I know this maybe is just too "awww & ohhh"-cozy and kind of ridiculous fawning tender. But who don't want a silly smile on your face for a few hours doing kitchen stuff before the guests arrives a Saturday evening, or with a cup of coffee on a sunny Sunday morning? - I'll not say no to such a small smexy tidbit.

Pleasurable, touching and yummy hot at the end. Quickly done and well narrated was it too. ~ There will be more CC books when my sugar level is low. A nice wolf-shifter romance can never be wrong.

I LIKE - cheesy lovely wolf tales sometimes

I do enjoy shifter stories and Alpha/Omega ones especially. I liked Simon from the beginning of the read but I hard time warming up to Mitch. Initially, I really enjoyed the concept of him but his lack of communication and steamrolling over Simon both physically and emotionally was hard to read at times. I think a lot of the fear that Simon had could have been alleviated with just a short conversation and while I didn’t think that made Mitch a bully it made him dense. The concept of insta-mate/love can sometimes work for me but when the Alpha half of the pair just tells the Omega half how it’s gonna be without really explaining things it just annoyed me to no end.

I did like Mitch despite his obtuseness and overbearing actions that made that hard in some places. Use your words, Mitch. It felt a lot like the characters were talking at each other and not to each other. Each having a different conversation and frustrated when the other didn’t really understand what they were trying to get across. That, in turn, didn’t endear me to the first half of the read but made me frustrated as well.

It took me more than half of the book to start enjoying the relationship between Simon and Mitch. As Mitch started being less hardcore and Simon started warming up to him, relaxing in his surroundings and being less afraid this read took on sweetness that I liked quite a bit.

It was the getting to know you portion and relationship building aspect of the read that drew me in. I liked that Mitch acknowledged that he was bad with words and that by doing so he screwed things up in the beginning both for Simon and for me as well, tbh. Despite the rough start this ended on a good note and the last half of the read was much more compelling. I’ll be checking out the second book in the series for sure.

I’d probably give this 2.5-3 stars now. Simon grated on my nerves a bit more. But overall it’s just a sweet low angst story.

3.5 stars.

Sweet little shifter mm romance. Mitch was so sweet and possessive. He really takes the time to allow Simon to be comfortable with him and to heal. Not much happens, it's just the two of them getting to know each other and come to terms with them being mates.

The fact that I'm reading shifter books can be solely faulted to Cardeno C., who offered me the first book in the Mates series a while back, when I mentioned on Facebook that I wasn't really into shifter books.

This has changed since then because I've not only devoured Wake Me Up Inside, but every single shifter book CC has written, and Blue Mountain is no different. When I saw the book pop up on Goodreads, I begged (not sorry) to get an early copy. Of course, CC obliged.

If the series shapes up anything like this book, we're in for a treat. I adored this. ADORED this.

Mitch Grant is an Alpha, though without a mate, and his brother is the Alpha of the Blue Mountain pack, mated to an Alpha female.

Mitch lives on his own on the outskirts of pack land, hoping that one day he'll find his own mate. He's sort of a loner, protective of his pack, but not really a full participant.

Then Simon Moorehead enters the pack land, for reasons that aren't immediately cleared up, and is accosted by some of the pack members for entering their territory without permission.

One sniff of Simon's blood tells Mitch all he needs to know - this is his mate, and by God, he will protect him at all cost.

Simon has had a hard life. Exiled at 13 by his own pack for being a gay Omega wolf, he's been on the run with his mother for a dozen years. He has learned to rely on himself, without a pack to call home, and is immediately distrustful of the hunky Alpha who takes him home and offers him his bed to rest. Feeds him. Cares for him.

I loved how the author showed the immediate mating bond between the two, but also gave Simon reason not to believe in his own feelings. I loved how Mitch, the big Alpha wolf, the strong, silent protector, had a gentle and loving attitude toward Simon from the start, even though he was hurt when Simon, his mate, rejected him. He didn't give up, kept chipping away at the walls, slowly but surely.

This is CC at the absolute best - a grandiose, romantic love story between two fated mates, without any contrived conflict, misunderstandings and other cliches we so often find in the books we read. It's the story of how one man quietly, persistently works his way into another man's heart, the mating bond working in his favor, but never taking choices away.

As with all of CC's books, I was swept away by the wonderful, emotional writing, and closed this book with a sigh and a smile.

Nobody does sweet, gooey, fluffy but emotionally charged romance like CC. I can hardly wait for the next one.

I really enjoyed this one, not quite as much as CC's "Mates" series, but it was very entertaining and heart-felt.

I loved how Mitch, big, bad, intimidating Alpha that he was, had zero ego when it came to Simon. "I'd crawl for you, pup."

And it was a joy to watch Simon's very necessary, snarky, fiery "kick you in the balls" defenses being lowered a bit at a time, as Mitch proved himself to be the safe haven that Simon needed in order to learn to trust again. And he's a ginger, for those of you with a thing for that.

I also really loved Match's Alpha, pack leader brother and his Alpha wife being so completely supportive of Mitch and Simon. They rocked.

Although the book is about 150 pages, it did feel a bit short for me, but what's new there? I *always* want more pages when it comes to CC. : )

4 very solid stars for this one and I look forward to more books in the series.

I think Teen Wolf fic writers have ruined regular shifter books for me.

Simon is an omega wolf who was ran out of his pack thirteen years ago. He's back now to bury his mother, when members of the local pack find him, and set out to teach him a lesson about being on someone else's land.

As soon as Mitch smells Simon's blood, he knows he's found his mate, he just has to convince Simon of this pack.

This SHOULD have been really good, but after the initial meeting between the two, it skips ahead three weeks, and Simon has greatly relaxed in Mitch's presence, and is even accepting that he'll be sticking around. I feel like we missed out on all that getting to know and trust each other, and it took away from the enjoyment of the story for me.

There was also some confusion, on my part, on Simon's past. At one point, he talks about how other wolves said his scent told them he wanted things, when he didn't, how he never wanted the things they did to him, which, to me, says some kind of sexual assault. But then when he and Mitch finally get physical, he doesn't seem sexually traumatized at all, and says this is his first time with any of it. So, I'm not sure what those other wolves made him do that he didn't want?

All in all, this was a fairly fluffy story, that I think would have greatly benefited from more pages, showing us how Mitch proved himself to Simon, and also, a bit more detail about Simon's time on the road.

Simon Moorehead is an exiled Omega wolf without a pack who returns to Blue Mountain after many years. Alpha wolf Mitch Grant recognizes him as his mate and prevents him from being attacked for being on pack territory and brings him to his home.

This was an incredibly endearing story. Mitch is an Alpha wolf, twin of the pack Alpha Frederick, and chooses to support his brother rather than lead his own. He's led a lonely, solitary existence and his excitement at finding his mate is short lived when Simon rejects him out of fear. Mitch spends the next few weeks subordinating his nature while waiting for Simon to heal and learn to trust him.

The lengths to which Mitch went to care and nurture Simon were lovely. Simon's sweet nature rose above his learned survival instincts, developed after so many years alone without a pack. The time it took to calm his fears also gave them an opportunity to develop a strong and binding relationship.

I loved the story, which occurs right around Thanksgiving. Simon's not the only one benefitting from the relationship as Mitch finally emerges from his isolation and finds real happiness. Both of them experience the true spirit of thanksgiving.

(I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review)

Mitch is the rare alpha without a pack to oversee but he's ok with that. Instead, his twin brother is the official alpha and he basically serves as his taciturn enforcer. Mitch is pretty much resigned to the fact that he will never find his mate - mostly because he's gay and mostly because alphas typically match with the more docile omega type, which is rare in males.

Simon is that rare male omega who has not had an easy life and was ostracized from his own pack at a young age due to his very nature. He's basically been bullied and abused - the last thing he needs is a scary, bossy alpha who he assumes will force him to heed his every whim. He's quite unaware of shifter culture and denies the very bond that Mitch has been so desperately wanting.

I admit that not much happens in this book. I also admit that I quite enjoyed the overall simplicity of it despite that. This was a nice, angsty look at their courtship with the added bonus of some decent tender and growly smex. Basically if you like werewolves, like the idea of mates, then I don't think many will be disappointed with this short romantic tale.

A lovely little mates story, featuring a brusque, but sweet, Alpha and a lonely, yet stubborn, Omega wolf.

Mitch and Simon made for a really adorable pairing, and although their story was somewhat short, they made my heart sigh and left me with a smile on my face.

I’m looking forward to more from this series.

A new author for me so wasn't sure what to expect. However, I'm pleased to say that it was pretty much exactly what I wanted it to be. A fast read (132 pages) so not a deep plot, but quite enjoyable and satisfying. I will definitely be continuing with this series and more from Cardeno C.

The beginning of this book really confused me. It starts with mentioning so many things, that I was under the impression I must have started the second book in a series.

Things like this:

His history as the person responsible for eviscerating the three men who had served as their Betas while his brother killed the previous Alpha made him the stuff of nightmares to their parents. The fact that Mitch and Frederick hadn’t asked for the battle and that the men had all been abusive to their pack wasn’t enough to completely eliminate their fears.

Wait, what..? These sort of things are all casually mentioned. It was confusing.

description

The writing was absolutely not what I’m used to from Cardeno C. It was almost sloppy. Strange info dropping and confusing scenes.

But once I stopped paying attention to this I liked it. But this could also be because I have such a soft spot for the small guys who were mistreated in the past and who’s trust has to be earned.

description

This story is all about Simon, who is found in pack territory and Mitch, the alpha’s twin brother. The two turn out to be mates. But Simon has not been treated well in the past so Mitch has to earn his trust.

description

Not much else happens, but it was enough. I liked it.

------------

I know Harry Potter has absolutely nothing to do with werewolves, but hey, I like Harry (in a totally non-sexual way).

I will finish with a random HP gif, just because I can.

Oh... How I loved this book. I've read a few books by this author and the shifter ones are by far my favourite.

The pure need that Mitch has to look after, protect and care for his mate Simon literally leaks out of every word and caress he gives. Simon, although an Omega, isn't docile in any way - feisty and strong through circumstance until Mitch is able to pave the way for Simon to give in to his need to be cared for, and this comes through in a gorgeous mix of tender hotness! Mitch's declaration to his brother took my breath away - and my only gripe is that I would have liked a little more in the way of Simon's inner dialogue about how he came around to Mitch's way of thinking - partly because I love that stuff and also because I just didn't wanted the story to end!

Am very much looking forward to book 2.

I don’t think there is a Cardeno C shifter book written that I haven’t devoured and enjoyed. Nobody does sexy wolves better! This one is a fast little read but jam packed with everything you could want.

Simon Moorehead was banished from his pack as a young teen along with his mother for being an omega and gay. Life ‘after pack’ is not easy for them and they struggle for years moving from one place to the next to avoid trouble. Any trust he had in a pack or in shifters in general has been beaten out of him. Denying his omega tendencies he acts tough and cold but it is slowly killing his spirit.

Years later he returns to his old pack grounds to bury his mother and is caught by the current pack Alphas brother Mitch. Mitch has caught his scent and is overjoyed at finally finding his mate even if Simon wants nothing to do with him and tries to escape. Finding a mate is not going the way Mitch had expected and he is left hurt and sad at Simon’s dismissal.

This is a story of trust and the biggest problem is Simon doesn’t trust anyone but in particular shifters. Mitch is a tad overzealous initially and quickly learns that tying Simon to the chair and bed is not the best way to keep his mate with him. He takes a step back and slowly begins to listen to what Simon has to say instead of using his wolf instincts and things run a far more smoothly. Communication is definitely the way forward!

Their friendship is slow and tentative but the changes can soon be seen in Simon. Mitch is clinging onto the hope that Simon will be able to trust him someday but the man has been so hurt all throughout his life that it’s a tough call. When it does finally happen it feels all the more real and it is also hot as hell!

Great main and secondary characters and great start to a new series which has left me looking forward to the next book.

A review by The Blogger Girls.

I don’t normally read the fluffy stuff, but I admit I do really enjoy reading Cardeno’s stories. This one called to me right away knowing it was going to be a little sweet with some hot shifter romance thrown in.

Simon is a super sweet Omega who truly does not realize his worth. He was forced from the original pack at an early age, as they didn’t feel a gay omega had anything to offer the pack either. So, he has learned to live a life without a pack, just him and his mother. Fulfilling her dying wish to return to that land, Simon is found and reported to the current pack alpha.

This pack is a little different in that it has two alphas. They are brothers, though Mitch is gay and has never had a desire to lead the pack and chooses to back his brother instead, taking the role of pack enforcer. These guys have soul mates, but it is believed that only truly happens to alphas who are strong enough to both lead the pack and have that type of relationship. Mitch and his brother are each lucky enough to have that.

Mitch senses right away that Simon is his mate, but he has quite a time convincing Simon of this fact, something which he feels Simon should sense on his own. It’s a rough beginning for these two, and Mitch has to tread very carefully so as not to send Simon running for the hills. His methods are a bit harsh at first, but they quickly come to an agreement of sorts, making little deals here and there that enable them to get to know one another. This is what I enjoyed most – watching the trust grow. Mitch could have made things a little easier by providing more information early on or communicating better, but hey, he’s not perfect, and it is his first time with his mate, so emotions and hormones are running a bit strong.

As with all of the Cardeno books I’ve read, I quite enjoyed this one. It was a quick and easy read which I really find refreshing now and then. I’m excited to see where this series is headed and am looking forward to the next one.

I really enjoyed this little shifter story and would have liked it to be a bit longer. I wanted to know more about Simon and I wanted to see how he interacted with the pack. Hopefully we'll get to know him better in the following books.

It's a decent shifter story, it's got quite a few elements that are present in many of these author's books, so sometimes it's almost like you already know the formula and know what's coming (the famous one of the possessive main character jumping down on his knees in pretty much most of the books I've read so far, not to mention the repetition of certain sentences).

Overall I think this could've been a bit more filled with tension and passion, considering the setting and the position of the Omega and the extremely dominant nature of the Alpha, but it's developed to be just a nice, sweet little story and that fell a bit flat for me.

🔵 Omegaverse
🟣 Age gap 25/36
🟢 Substantial size difference
🟡 Rogue Omega/Jack's alpha's twin brother
🟠 Forced proximity
🌶️ Sex near the end; it's descriptive and good; oral, rimming, penetrative; t/b

Simon has a really bad life story where he was kicked out of his Blue Mountain pack when he was a teen because he's an Omega and he's gay. Him and his mother were basically homeless for more than a decade, he's been just living this horrendous, lonely life and when he comes back to the pack grounds where his mother dies and gets burried, he's found and brought to Mitch, the pack Alpha's twin brother and also an Alpha.

The cottage where Mitch lives in is Simon's former home and that wasn't addressed enough, I think, only mentioned in passing while it's a pretty big deal. They should've been more in awe of this coincidence and Simon should've had a bigger reaction to his former home.

Simon is terrified because apparently he's also been sexually assaulted in the past, so he's very reluctant to have anything to do with Mitch. Mitch leaves him alone and gives him time to relax and adjust and that period of relaxing, adjusting and relationship building is completely off-page, we come back to when the said month of Simon's time in Mitch's house is up and that's where main characters also get intimately involved.

I think we just jumped to sex and left out everything else, so even though the sex was good, I would've liked to read more about their everyday life and their interactions, not just that one day that was mentioned.
There should've been a bit more tension and anticipation between them on-page. In general more of their everyday interactions.

“Do you trust me?” he asked.

After a pause, Simon said, “I don’t know you. You brought me here when I was unconscious. You tied me up.”

“All true statements.” Mitch nodded. “But do you trust me?”

A few of these dialogues could've been a bit better between them and again, I think the author had such a good setting here with a reclusive, scary Alpha and a hurt Omega, but the story just wasn't developed enough to bring out that dynamic to the fullest.

It's a big deal when the son of the former pack leader comes back, yet nothing was said about it. Does anyone even know besides the Alpha's wife? What's Simon's position in the pack now? They just had a Thanksgiving dinner at the end of the book and that's it, there was no reunion with anyone and there's no proper ending or epilogue, I have no idea what happens to Simon and how he adjusted to his old pack.

It could've been so much better.
