Dead Witch Walking

All the creatures of the night gather in "the Hollows" of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party ... and to feed. Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining — and it’s Rachel Morgan'sjob to keep that world civilized. A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she'll bring 'em back alive, dead ... or undead.

The Good, the Bad, and the Undead

It's a tough life for witch Rachel Morgan, sexy, independent bounty hunter, prowling the darkest shadows of downtown Cincinnati for criminal creatures of the night. She can handle the leather-clad vamps and even tangle with a cunning demon or two. But a serial killer who feeds on the experts in the most dangerous kind of black magic is definitely pressing the limits. Confronting an ancient, implacable evil is more than just child's play — and this time, Rachel will be lucky to escape with her very soul.

Every Which Way But Dead

Rachel Morgan's back! Bestselling author Kim Harrison returns with a new supernatural adventure that fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris won't want to miss. Some days, you just can't win. Witch and former bounty hunter Rachel Morgan's managed to escape her corrupt company, survive living with a vampire, start her own runner service, and face down a vampire master. But her vampire roommate Ivy is off the wagon, her human boyfriend Nick is out of town indefinitely and doesn't sound like he's coming back while the far-too-seductive vampire Kisten is looking way too tempting, and there's a turf war erupting in Cincinnati's underworld. And there's a greater evil still. To put the vampire master behind bars and save her family, Rachel made a desperate bargain and now there's hell to pay—literally. For if Rachel cannot stop him, the archdemon Algaliarept will pull her into the sorcerous ever-after to forfeit her soul as his slave. Forever.

A Fistful of Charms

The evil night things that prowl Cincinnati despise witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan. Her new reputation for the dark arts is turning human and undead heads alike with the intent to possess, bed, and kill her — not necessarily in that order. Now a mortal lover who abandoned Rachel has returned, haunted by his secret past. And there are those who covet what Nick possesses — savage beasts willing to destroy the Hollows and everyone in it if necessary. Forced to keep a low profile or eternally suffer the wrath of a vengeful demon, Rachel must nevertheless act quickly. For the pack is gathering for the first time in millennia to ravage and to rule. And suddenly more than Rachel's soul is at stake.

Book 1: Dead Witch Walking ...

This is the start of an AMAZING series with well crafted characters; masterfully set scenes & world; story is so well told you become immersed in it and become personally invested in the characters and their wants & desires!

You will meet Rachel and the other characters & you WILL at least fall "in like" with one or more of them! The story is action packed & fun to read! Give it a chance you will not be sorry you did!

Read this book & then READ the other BOOKS in this series!

Book 2: The Good, the Bad, and the Undead ...

These books get better with every one! From book one you are invested in the characters because they are so well crafted. You can see the Hollows because the scene is set masterfully! The story is so well told you become immersed in it and become personally invested in the characters and their wants & desires!

Read book 1 first & then READ THIS BOOK; you will not be sorry you did!

Rachel and gang are facing a Serial Killer that is using Black magic ... how will this turn out? Will she survive with her Soul intact? Read the book & find out!

Book 3: Every Which Way But Dead ...

These books get better with every one! From book one you are invested in the characters because they are so well crafted. You can see the Hollows because the scene is set masterfully! The story is so well told you become immersed in it and become personally invested in the characters and their wants & desires!

Read book 1 & 2 first & then READ THIS BOOK; you will not be sorry you did!

Part of book blurb:

There's no witch in Cincinnati tougher, sexier, or more screwed up than bounty hunter Rachel Morgan, who's already put her love life and soul in dire jeopardy through her determined efforts to bring criminal night creatures to justice.

My review:

Rachel is in it now! She saved the day last book but what did it cost her? What it cost her could easily bring her: an eternity of pain, torment, and degradation. (borrowed from the blurb) ... she has a hot new "suitor" and she is trying to figure that out as well as an ever intriguing relationship with Ivy & keeping things from Jinks isn't easy either! Can this "screw up" for a Witch balance her ever complicated life & handle what is coming?

Give this book a read & find out!

Book 4: A Fistful of Charms ...

These books get better with every one! From book one you are invested in the characters because they are so well crafted. You can see the Hollows because the scene is set masterfully! The story is so well told you become immersed in it and become personally invested in the characters and their wants & desires!

Read book 1 -3 first & then READ THIS BOOK; you will not be sorry you did!

Publisher Description {Partial}

The evil night things that prowl Cincinnati despise witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan. Her new reputation for the dark arts is turning human and undead heads alike with the intent to possess, bed, and kill her -- not necessarily in that order.

My Review:

Lookie ... lookie ... Nick is back! Good News? Bad News? Read to find out!

Rachel's life is never dull or boring! Someday she may even figure out who not to have to constantly risk her life & soul!

This was a great book ... read it & then the several others in the Series!

I have been reading this series, and I am currently up to book #9. It is an urban fantasy set in modern-day Cincinnati, in which magical & and supernatural species (witches, vampires, werewolves, etc) coexist openly with the human population. The main character is a tough female bounty hunter/detective, who is also a witch. She has two partners in her agency, a young, female vampire and a male pixie named Jenks. Jenks and his wife have over 50 children. Jenks is probably my favorite character. Despite being only 4 inches tall, he is a force to be reckoned with. His speech is riddled with imaginative expletives often involving Tinkerbell, and reflecting the pixie perspective (which includes a fierce dedication to their garden). Sometimes when I am reading it I laugh out loud and I just wish I had someone to tell. Here are a few of his expressions (some are from books that come after #4):

Tink’s little red shoes!

"You think my kids just popped out of the ground?"

"aww, that's so sweet I could fart fairy balls."

For the love of Tink!

You gotta be pissing in my daisies!

Tink's a Disney whore!

"Worthless as a pixy condom. Just tape my ass shut and let me fart out my mouth."

And here is something Jenks said that I found touching:
"My kids know you can make it if you take risks and work hard. That we can work in the system you lunkers set up. That's all a parent really needs to give his child. That, and how to love someone with all your soul."

I find myself trying to like this series, but I really can't. Part of that is the slow pacing - most of the books could be cut by 1/3rd without losing anything. The rest of my inability to engage with this series comes down to one thing: Rachel Morgan. It isn't just that she's annoying, though she is certainly that, but that her characterization is a mess. She'll go on for pages worth of inner monologue about how morally upstanding she is, and how she's lost friends because they went down the path of bad magic etc.. Only she's so hellbent on being sexually submissive that she routinely takes lesyay beatings from her vampire roommate, and when her cliche of a boyfriend tells her that he's going to summon demons whether she likes it or not she just meekly accepts it.

And then there's Trent, the sexy bad boy who somehow manages to make her even more annoying. How much more annoying? Ol' Rachel will go on for paragraphs about how perfect and sexy he is right before even more annoying paragraphs about how she's going to take him down - right before she decides to compromise a crime scene and murder investigation that might, you know, actually bring him down.

Combined with various transformation scenes and whatnot, I suppose the series has a lot of potential fetish fuel... but even if it ticks your personal boxes I can't recommend putting up with the protagonist.

Rachel, Ivy and Jenks! Great adventures!

I loved these books. In fact, I had already bought the first 3 paperbacks, read the first two and then decided to invest in these e-books! I’d had the paperbacks for years and never got around to reading them. But once I picked up the first book, I never looked back.

Jenks is one of the funniest characters! A huge personality in a little body! Rachel and Ivy’s friendship is evolving and from disliking Kisten in the beginning, I really came to like him. Nick however was always “crap for brains”!!!

I feel very lucky to have found this gem of a series and I have a lot more books to read. Rachel survives because she has her friends. She’s feisty but flawed. No superpowers as such but with Jenks and Ivy as backup they make up a formidable team.

If there was one thing I would say, is that I found “ A Fistful of Charms” slower than the other books, more of a filler in, and maybe not as enjoyable. However, there’s so much going on and potential in this series that I have to give it 5 stars! Can’t wait to join the team on their next adventure!

Picked this series up because I miss a good series where you follow the characters through years and there's some really good character development like the Kate Daniels series. Yes, I am once again wishing I could reread KD for the first time.

Unfortunately the first 8 books of this series are just so bad. So, so, bad. Only the second book in this quarter was good and it was because of Trent. Not only is he the most interesting character, Rachel becomes WAY less irritating with him. I skimmed most of this quartet. The writing drags, the pacing is uneven, nearly all the characters are unlikeable as fuck (Rachel being the worst) and it was a real slog getting through them.

I love this fantasy world brimming with living vampires, werewolves, pixies, fairies, leprechauns, warlocks, demons, elves, and humans. Kim Harrison has a very interesting modern take on a world torn asunder by plague, politics, and centuries old prejudices. The story has a strong female protagonist who doesn’t let her flaws get in the way of her being herself and kicking butt! The books are unnecessarily long and if you are looking for a quick read, this is not it.

Outstanding! Kim Harrison hits it out of the park!

One of my favorite authors, Ms. Harrison weaves a fascinating storyline with unforgettable characters. Simply put, this is a magical mix of action, suspense, and mystery with a touch of romance and sensuality set in an alternate reality that is believable down to the smallest details. Outstanding!

It's been so freaking great to revisit these books. I can't believe how much I had forgotten. It's so well written, the words just flow off the page and it's so easy to get immersed into the story and hear everything in my brain. I wish everybody would read this series.

Rachel is way more angsty than I remember. I have such fond memories of this series too. I have to wonder if re-reading books that I really liked from so long ago is the best idea. It’s kind of a letdown.

Good series of books, although to the end I could see there was a lot of losing the plot. I looked at reviews for the rest and tbh I think I'll give it a miss. Shame really.
