Shy’s fundamental problem is that it has a lot of characters I just don’t care about. There’s a lot to like in this volume, if I’m being honest, but there’s a bunch of stuff that’s not quite there for me.

The action sequences are fun and dynamic, I’ll give them that. Whenever the story decides to throw down it does it about as well as I expect from something like this. It suffers from power creep, as most action manga do, but it’s good enough.

And I still think Shy’s a good character, although this volume comes perilously close to fetishizing a very young girl in her school swimsuit. Honestly, the whole ocean segment is a dud because I don’t like the new hero there much either (and her powers and dynamic make zero sense together).

And they only add, you know, another half a dozen heroes to the mix this volume. Between them and the underwhelming villains, who seem to be a blend of menace and marketability, I was a bit done with that side of things. Neither of them really resonated much with me.

Surprisingly, the human element is what really makes this volume good. Besides Teru being Teru, her friend she saved at the start of the series is clearly desperate to help and it feels like that desperation is being taken advantage of by somebody out there. It felt weird she’d be taken in that easily, honestly, but I’ll let it slide.

The ongoing attempts to rehabilitate Keheheh are also rather sweet, if a bit blatant. That, too, appears destined to be a bit of ‘no good deed going unpunished’ if the ending is to be believed. As much as the villains are kind of meh, this did feel like a good arc.

So, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, as tends to happen. I genuinely enjoyed this volume, but it also definitely has character issues that are only compounded by adding another gaggle into the mix. And it could do more with those it already has; it’s real hard to take some of this as seriously as we’re supposed to.

Nebulous power sets also don’t necessarily make for a good story either. The whole ‘wish’ thing that the big (small) bad has going on feels like it’s just waiting for an author exploit to do whatever the story requires. Case in point, the cliffhanger.

3.5 stars - a little extra because I like the character stuff, but it has enough that bugs me that I won’t be giving it anything beyond that. Good, but uneven. Again.

Nello scorso volume vediamo Teru essere intrappolata da due Amararilk e salvata dagli eroi dell'india, grandi amici della sorella e su cui hanno fatto una promessa solenne, di vegliare su Teru e di non fargli fare gli stessi errori commessi dalla sorella. Quali saranno questi errori? Gli Amararilk vogliamo Shy fuori dai giochi perché è l'unica che riesce a purificare il cuore di Amararilk, quindi gli limitano i poteri e la mandano ad allenarsi lontano dagli occhi dell'organizzazione, mentre il suo club tiene d'occhio la città in sua assenza. Anche un altro personaggio si allena per essere di supporto a Shy , Iko che diventata una buona amica di Shy, entra misteriosamente in contatto con la sua parte oscura, la stessa parte che vediamo in Shy volume uno, approfondimento Iko e il perché si è unito agli Amararilk ed è la personificazione della distruzione. Stigma Intanto fa irruzione nella base degli eroi per tornare in possesso di Uhuh prima che anche lei venga purificata. In questo volume Shy è preda degli Amararilk e delle vecchie conoscenze si prodigano per salvarla, adesso Shy ha imparato ad usare l'anello di Mai quindi assistiamo ad un power up. Lettura diversa dal precedente tankobon precedente, qui Shy inizia ad essere consapevole del proprio potere quindi deve allenarlo, ma anche che ha una taglia sulla testa e ogni membro dell'Amararilk è pronto alla distruzione totale pur di trovarla. Il potere di Iko era palese che l'autore/autrice gli avesse dato importanza siccome è sempre intorno a Shy anche nelle situazioni più concitate, però non si a ancora se questo potere derivi da se stessa o dal contatto con gli Amararilk, spero molto la prima, perché la seconda Mai non ha fatto una bella fine anche se ha accettato il suo destino. La società descritta in Shy non è idilliaca, e ciò che ne consegue e la formazione non solo di Stigma ma anche di spiriti inquieti che Stigma usa come Burattini.
