Rate this book
Running trade routes with a crew of misfits, Karzon only had his determination, survival skills, and the need to turn a profit.

As a newly awoken healer, Karzon's magic is unexpectedly rare. When the kingdom of Arlenia crumbles under monsters rising from corrupted gems, Karzon realizes all will fall without him, because his magic alone can destroy the source. Thankfully, he's not alone.

Among the fantastic women fighting by his side are Briena, the lithe, silver-haired elven warrior, and Aisri, the breathtaking fire-mage. Together they'll discover the truth behind the dungeon gems and their combined power will face its greatest test in this high-stakes adventure.

I forced myself to make it through the first 350 pages, but at that point, I was done with this book. It just isn't any good.

The MC is all over the place. The book starts off with him being a merchant and a fighter. He eventually gets gored by a minotaur, and suddenly gains the powers of a healer, something that hasn't been seen in forever. When the caravan he's sponsored gets everything stolen, he decides he's a thief and plans a heist in a single day. A heist they get caught on and imprisoned, only for a woman he knew previously to help them escape... while still being able to steal the gold that was the target of the heist. It goes downhill from there.

There was only one woman that the MC was lovers with by this point, and it was fairly anticlimactic. The buildup was ok, but the implementation of two people that have known each other for a while suddenly becoming lovers, and then devolving into dirty talk on the first time, was weird. Whether or not any of the other women will share the MC's bed/harem is anyone's guess.

The biggest thing I had an issue with is that it's like the authors just threw stuff at the wall and then made things stick that they wanted. The plot doesn't make any sense. The motivations of the various characters don't make a lot of sense. The MC can't decide what he actually is. The world building doesn't make any sense. When a book makes you continually ask more questions that it answers, it's not going well.

It was good but...

The book was very well written. It just did not click with me. The story and characters were good, but sometimes a book just doesn't vibe with you, and unfortunately, this is one of those for me. It's still very worth a read, and I'm sure many people will absolutely love it.

New writers take time to properly percolate

Alternate universe, magic fantasy races, save the world quest, harem adult situations

Karzon is the MC, and a bit of an odd duck. Merchant, fighter, and at home in the underworld of thieves, he's recently discovered he possesses healing magic. When he and the object of his fixation finally admit their feelings, they act on them. And the next day, both go about like it didn't happen. Until it happens again, and again, they sleep separately. Until they meet the second harem member.

The main writer, Colin, likes to wax poetic, sometimes repetitively but it's not a deal breaker; he makes a few mistakes in this promised first volumes, but hopefully will grow as a writer. He needs some good beta readers who will catch the continuity errors. Above average editing.

This novel was unusual in that many of the scenes were well done, but the continuity and editing were massively subpar and threw me out of immersion. There were constant world issues and it was obvious that the production of this novel was rushed without the services of a story editor. There was not much in the way of grammatical issues, so the issue must have just been how rushed it was. It seemed like the collaborators wrote scenes, but didn’t really coordinate the details so there were a bunch of glaring world building issues.

Spoilers below

We initially see Karzon as an experienced merchant betting all on going to a new city to make his fortune. Later, we find out that he has a long history in this city. A city, I might add that apparently doesn’t need any agriculture, since the capital of the kingdom has wild forests within a half day’s wagon ride of its walls! Later on, his cargo, along with other’s, is stolen, and rather than complain to the authorities or work to try to figure out how it happens, he just abandons it and goes to do other things. This is just unbelievable.
There is also the issue with his crew. Early in the novel, they are a group of poorly trained guards and some experienced wagon drivers. Suddenly, they morph into partners on the journey. A woman shows up and helps the MC out, but it is beyond believability that she can do it without alerting the bad guys, at least in the medium term. They ditch their horses because “the guards will be expecting fugitives on horses”, but the point has been made that no one knows what is going on or who did what.
Then they find out about a new job guarding a caravan (why our merchant would want to do this is beyond me) that is two days away. They find the caravan and WOW, it is heading back to the city that they fled. Don’t get me started about why this caravan has waited probably at least 6 days in the wilderness, but wasn’t it nice of the bad guys to wait until they were on the road to attack and not do it when they were defenseless a couple of days earlier?
Then there are simple editing mistakes. Aislin’s skin is dusky from the south, yet three pages later, her skin is pale in the moonlight. People are on horseback during a battle, then seconds later they are on foot, then seconds later they are on horseback again. Wagons are out of control and careening down the road, then they are back with the party a page later. Brienna, shoots arrows that have no effect because they are magical, then later someone else kills them with magic. It just goes on and on.

I usually like this author, but this one just didn’t go through the extra week to have beta readers point out all these flaws. It was a very disappointing and frustrating read.

Its Mid at best. Slow pacing, zero suspense, and a bit convoluted.

Stories written on a very low level, overall it's incredibly basic with no surprises. The writing does a bad job trying to explain the world or the magic Dynamics within it. There's really no explanation for abilities that seem to be new to the characters... Plot armor and plot holes everywhere. The main characters just stumble upon everything they need, and through the entire book they're trying to build an adult relationship between the characters that you really just don't care about. It's very slow paced and boring. I'm not interested in Reading anymore in this series. There's plenty of other genre books that at least keep your interest with the plot line, action and relationships. This one is a complete mess. Feels very AI written.

You have to suspend your disbelief to make it through this, i'll save you the time though. The prose and technical writing is good, obviously these are competent writers, it's a little flowery at times but fine. The problems are the plot and everything around it, the mc's power doesn't make sense. He just seems to randomly awaken to it, but we aren't really told how it works or where it comes from, so it ends up being a mcguffin. The main antagonist made no sense, and ended up being a pointless red herring. The characters and chemistry were fine, but the LI setup's are obvious and clunky. It's obvious in book 1 how many women are interested.

It's probably a 2, but I'll give it a three for the writing at least.

I really tried.

DNF. The plot is nonsensical. It didn't start that way, but by 35%, it was no longer worth my time to find out what was going to happen. The MC gets magical powers, starts to try and figure them out, then the plot moves on to something totally unrelated to where the story was headed. Yes, it all might come together at the end, but I no longer care.

What an amazing and intriguing beginning!!!

An adult fairy tale full of beauty and despair in just the right mixture!!! As we have learned to expect, the world building of this author is so deep and expansive!!! Deep and complicated characters, a dark mystery and pleasant feelings mix together throughout this story!!! I can't wait to see what this series becomes!!!

Good story

I will look forward to the next book. It was a fun story, but tended to be loquacious with descriptions. I hope there's more adventures and less drawn out descriptions of what's around the characters. The story was well thought out and entertaining to read.

This shows as a fantasy romance but unlike most books of this type is a very well written story. The prose is excellent and the storyline engaging. It isn't just some dross between love scenes. Feist or Eddings - not quite. But lite, maybe? Easy to read and recommended

ai slop

This is now concerning with the amount of ai generated “books” being pumped out. It’s pretty horrendous and not fun to read at all. These glowing reviews have me concerned for humanity, or maybe they are just more ai.

For the roleplayer

A story fit for the roleplayer at heart. No stats but a story the evolves just like we remember or wish it was.

A bit slow and predictable, but interesting enough that I finished it.
