Once upon a time in a world where magic and technology collide with unexpected consequences…
When Martin helps a pregnant woman to flee from the king’s men, he doesn’t know that the twins she bears will change his solitary life forever.
What if the Brother's Grimm misunderstood the dwarf in the original tale of "Snow White and Rose Red"?
The book includes a bonus story and the original fairy tale.
About the Series This fantasy novella series combines sorcery and science. It features retellings of your favorite fairy tales and of tales you've never heard. The fairy tales are suitable for teens and older readers alike, mixing steampunk fiction with magical elements in a fantasy world on threshold of technological advance. If the traditional “once upon a time” opening still captures your imagination, you will love these tales.
Katharina Gerlach was born in Germany in 1968. She and her three younger brothers grew up in the middle of a forest in the heart of the Luneburgian Heather. After romping through the forest with imagination as her guide, the tomboy learned to read and disappeared into magical adventures, past times or eerie fairytale woods.
She didn’t stop at reading. During her training as a landscape gardener, she wrote her first novel, a manuscript full of a beginner’s mistakes. Fortunately, she found books on Creative Writing and soon her stories improved. For a while, reality interfered with her writing but after finishing a degree in forestry and a PhD in Science she returned to her vocation. She likes to write Fantasy, Science Fiction and Historical Novels for all age groups.
At present, she is writing at her next project in a small house near Hildesheim, Germany, where she lives with her husband, three children and a dog.
Interesting twist on the "Snow White and Rose Red" tale in which the dwarf isn't the villain he's written to be in the Grimms' story. I liked the lovely relationship between the sisters and how resourceful they are, and how nice the dwarf actually is to them and their mother.
*I have received a copy of this book from the author for a honest review.*
For such a small book it carried quite a punch. I absolutely loved it. The story was so nicely narrated I fell in love with it from the first words. All the characters were so lovable. Martin was goodness packed in a small package and Bear showed that there is always room for improvement in one's character. The Fairy Godmother was a hoot :)) she was so funny. This was a book that just relaxed me and reminded me of my childhood when I read all the fairy tales known to man (sort of :P).
Snow White and Rose Red is one of the Grimms’ most popular stories. But what if the Grimms brothers version is misguided? Katharina Gerlach turns this tale on its head.
The story: Snow White and Rose Red grow up in a tiny cottage in the woods with only their mother to care for them. They don’t know their story, and their mother doesn’t tell them until they are old enough - they owe their lives to a shy dwarf named Martin, who watches over them.
Martin doesn’t just watch over the girls. He has a vested interest in the rest of the kingdom as well, and uses his magic in an attempt to right the wrongs of the current king. The battle is uphill, though, and the king knows he’s being threatened. A search party is sent into the woods in which the family have lived peacefully.
The girls are warned to stay out of the fight, but their lives are inextricably linked to the fate of the kingdom. Can each of them find love, and peace, in a kingdom torn apart by greed and slavery?
The style: This little novelette is outstanding in its simplicity. A fairytale is tempting, writing your own or re-writing someone elses, and often an inexperienced author will fall into the trap of trying to overdo it - the style becomes to flowery, or the telling too over-the-top Disney. Gerlach avoids this beautifully. Her style takes the tried and true Grimm’s brothers' narrative (those guys knew stories like that tell themselves, but tended towards cold, despairing undertones) and infuses it with the kind of lightness and whimsy the modern day reader expects in a fairytale. It’s lovely.
Each of Gerlach’s characters represents an fairytale archetype, lending a safe familiarity to the story, however she also imbues them with their own spirit and individuality which carries the story. It has just the right quantities of originality and tradition, which mix together to make something sweet and charming.
Who is this book for? Me. And if you’re like me, and you’re a sucker for fairy tales, then it’s for you as well.
If you like this book, you would also like... I know there have been fairytale retellings done recently (I think it’s quite popular in both literature and the movies) but I will equate the style to Isabele Allende for its understated magic and sweetness and leave it at that.
Who doesn’t love retold fairy tales? I love the imaginative way Katharina Gerlach told this story. With an evil greedy King slowly destroying his kingdom and his fairy godmother. You don’t remember a fairy godmother in this tale? Well there’s one in this story and she plays an important role. Many years ago she gave Martin a magical beard, and he has used it well to save his hide many times.
When Martin, our dwarf in this story, sees Adele, quite pregnant with twins, running from the King’s search party he hides her with his magic. They have just killed her husband. Here she gives birth to two girls and she asks the dwarf to name them. He names them after the two rose bushes he finds the next morning. He pricks one finger of each baby and imbues the rose bushes with magic to protect the girls and Adele. He plants the roses outside their cave home to hide the entrance. He names the girls Rose Red and Snow White.
Martin can see the King’s son following in his father’s footsteps unless he can intervene and show him his father’s true character. This is where Ms. Gerlach spins her version of the girls growing up and Adele’s late night talks with Martin. It’s enthralling and magical. Kids will love this retelling as much as adults.
This book also includes an extra story, Snow White’s Father, which is a little more closely related to Disney’s version of Snow White, but with an interesting twist. It took me a second or two to wrap my head around this version because my mind hadn’t made the transition to the new story. Snow White is only the nickname given to Princess Anna by the seven dwarves. I had to laugh-out-loud at the last sentence of this story. :D I was also pleased that the Katharina Gerlach included The Original: Snow White and Rose Red by the Brothers Grimm at the end.
FYI: The Dwarf and the Twins: Snow White and Rose Red is Book 1 of the series Treasures Retold. I think all three stories in this novelette could be shared with young children.

I love a good fairy tale! There is nothing like a good fairy tale to make you feel and experience such a wide array of emotions in such a short time. Gerlach here has not told a good fairy tale - she has told a great one!
Like so many young people I grew up reading fairy tales, although I do not quite remember all of the details of some of the lesser known ones. I know that I must have read Snow White and Red Rose but I definitely did not recall many of the details. I love that the original story was included after Gerlach’s tale - it really shows just how much she has made the story her own. The Dwarf and the Twins is beautiful and charming. It is every bit the fairy tale that the original is. Along with being charming it manages to keep a lot of the darkness that is a trademark of Grimm’s tales. And again it does that wonderfully. The dark characters are definitely dark here! There is no sanitizing of the fairy tale that we see a lot of the time.
While this is definitely set in the same world as the original, Gerlach has done a wonderful\job of giving it a modern feel. There is a little more sharpness to it - a little more edge to it. There is a little more humor here, often dark humor to be sure but humor none the less. And I absolutely love her take on who these people are. Rose and Snow are sweet and good but they are also more complex - they are young women who don’t just do what they are told but act on some of their own desires. And I hope the brothers Grimm did get it a little wrong because I absolutely adored Martin! I cannot wait to read the other stories in this series! Perfect for fairy tale lovers of any age.
This book is a fantastic retelling of a classic story with a twist. It was expertly written being short in length but bit in storyline having numerous things happening to the main characters as they embark on a great journey.
The main characters are Snow White and Red Rose and I am so happy to say that Red Rose is finally in a book that truly gives her a story of their own. In this book Red and Snow are independently living out of the castle that is normally Snow White’s home. The two sisters are very different with Snow being happy staying in the same place and Red being happy to wander and go on adventures. The two characters I felt were fantastically written and kept me hooked on the adventure they go on together.
The secondary characters I felt most noteworthy are the dwarf and the fairy godmother. These two characters are driving influences in the book as they are characters who drive the twins to go on their adventure. They also help the twins along the way in terms of offering advice and helpful hints and tips.
The pacing and storyline are great as they offer something different. The pacing in a short book is I think a challenge to get right since there is less space to have the same impact on the readers but I do think this book aces it giving us a great story and keeping us wanting to read more about the characters. The storyline is also very original and unlike anything I have ever read to do with one or more of these characters; I very much enjoyed the twist on this classic tale.
4 stars a really great read- I’d recommend this book to everyone.
This was a very cute retelling of Snow White and Rose Red. I like that the two girls were the best of friends but very different; while Snow White was quiet, meek and stayed closet to their home, which was in a cave, Rose Red was her exact opposite. She was adventurous outspoken and hated being kept in their cafe. To her, it felt like a prison. Snow White had visions of the future on occasions and Rose Red was an excellent hunter, always managing to bring enough food home that would sustain her family, with the meat being a nice addition to the vegetables that her twin sister, Snow White, grew in their vegetable patch right outside of their cave, yet still within the boundaries of the red and white Rose bushes that were infused with magic and hid the two girls and their mother from the evil king that was out to get them. I think that my favorite character, however, was the dwarf. He was such a kind and gentle soul who truly enjoyed helping people, even if he grumbled about it a lot. I honestly felt bad for the dwarf, with him being alone for so long. All in all, I loved this short and sweet fairy tale retelling. I recommend it to people who love reading their favorite fairy tales with a twist.
*I have received a copy of this book from the author for a honest review.*
I was really excited to read this novella since I have twins and since I have all daughters, I've kind of become obsessed with fairytales and princesses in general (can't imagine why!).
I've never done a real book review before, so without any spoilers, this book is a really well retold version of Snow White and her twin (I'm guessing fraternal twin) Rose Red. Instead of many little dwarfs, there is only one, and there is a lot of magic at play to protect them in their lives.
If you are a fairytale lover and do not mind them being changed, then this book is perfect - you get the best of both worlds - a brand new story, plus the old fairytale and its characters.
If you don't like change, then perhaps look other places, but you're missing out big time! It's a beautiful story about true love between lovers and between family - the best things in the world!
This was actually a fast pace ad light read. It romance is mild or lesser than that but at the same time this retelling was very captivating and quite different.
I loved how the author portrayed the dwarf and his important role. It was very interesting to know what his thoughts were. I admit I was kind of slow on the uptake when the little secret wad revealed.
Both Snow White and Red Rose were charming in their own unique way. Despite them being different they were very close and a tight nit family. I loved how they were good at something and that they were able to help each other out.
I have to admit though that I only read a few of th original Grimm tales and must admit that I learned about Red Rose late.
Whatever romance this story had was sweet and cute too. The ending makes me feel as if on cloud nine. I liked how the author ended the story and how both found love.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Dwarf and the Twins (the original, Snow White and Rose Red by the Brothers Grimm) and the Bonus Story, Snow White's Father, were refreshingly told. Both had a more positive outcome than the original story. I particularly liked reading The Dwarf and the Twins from the dwarf's point of view. Being unfamiliar with the original story (outside of Disney's version), I particularly appreciated having the original tale included for comparison.
Snow White's Father, the Bonus Story, illustrated what can happen when an absentee father suddenly decides it's time to become involved in his child's life -- and how that effort can backfire on him.
Katharina provided me with an advance copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.
The Dwarf and The Twins is awesome! It was truly unputdownable; I literally finished it right on the spot. No kidding! xP The story also evoked all sorts of emotions inside me which reminds me of the first book of hers that I read, The Mechanic and The King and I thought that Katharina is truly a remarkable writer.
I would definitely recommend this to others because I assure you that it won't let you down.
One thing though, I got slightly confused with the 1st and 3rd p.o.v but apart from that all is good and it ain't gonna stop me from giving this book 5 stars ;)
Such a compelling piece that it left a good feeling after you finished reading it. Thank you, Katharina for letting me read it first before it was published.
This is the second novella I've read by Katharina Gerlach and I have to say she has a talent for telling stories! Another of my favorite fairy tale stories is the one about Snow White, so I was looking forward to seeing how the author would retell this...and I wasn't disappointed. The Dwarf and the Twins is a refreshing take on the story of Snow White and is a perfect story to read if you are looking for something you came start and finish in one sitting.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. I was asked to give my honest opinion of the book - which I have done.
For fans of fairy tales, author Katharina Gerlach bring us the re-told tale of one of the most famous children stories from the Grimm Brothers, Snow White and Rose Red. Katharina spins the story to make all the characters from the original story have a role to play and a happy ending.
The Dwarf and the Twins starts off the story before the events of Snow White and Rose Red, and it tells us more about the lives of the dwarf that the sisters meet three times in the original story. Martin, as he is called, lives a solitary life in the woods of the kingdom that is dying of hunger from their greedy king. He, with the magic that he possesses, tries to free and keep alive the people that starve by working in the mines all day.
The story, also, shows more of the mother of Snow and Rose. We know of the land’s king and of his son, that is later turn into a bear, and even a fairy godmother that has to keep her word or she will lose her license.
I always like when authors take stories that we have known since our childhood, and changes them to make something new and different, but with the same characters that we know. It is always interesting and refreshing to read a story from the point of view of a character that is not one of the main characters.
The book comes with bonus stories that you will also like and with a copy of the original version of Snow White and Rose Red. If you like fairy tales, but are tired of the stories never changing, I recommend you to read The Dwarf and the Twins, were the sisters change the lives of the people around them and find true love at the first sight.

Title The Dwarf and the Twins Author: Katharina Geriach Star Rating: 4 stars Number of Readers: 16
Readers’ Comments ‘A very enjoyable retelling of a classic story. There is a fun twist to the story I liked very much.’ Female reader, aged 34 ‘A number of very fun characters in this short story. I particularly liked the dwarf and Red Rose. A lovely, light read, perfect for anybody who enjoyed the classic.’ Female reader, aged 26 ‘This is a sweet story. I often enjoy it when authors re-tell a story they enjoyed when they were kids. There’s nothing to upset here: lots of love, lots of magic, a sweet ending. Sadly, it’s far removed from reality. But maybe that’s a good thing. This story won’t test a reader and it won’t highlight important world problems but it might help you to escape from reality for a half hour.’ Male, aged 45 ‘This was a lovely read but it was actually the author’s language I enjoyed the most. She is very talented.’ Female, aged 51 ‘Not my thing! I sort of get annoyed when writers feel the need to re-write a classic story. Why not just write an original? However, I must admit, this one was very well done.’ Male reader, aged 71
Stats Of the 16 readers: 9 thought the cover was good or excellent. 12 would read another story by this author. 6 felt the author’s language was the best part of the story. 10 felt the plot twist was the best.
‘A fun twist on a classic tale.’ The Wishing Shelf Awards
What a wonderful tale. It is not your typical Snow White tale either, but a different version with an unusual ending. I found the whole Dwarf and twin aspect very interesting and delightful. I have never heard the version, before. She includes the original version and the original Snow White tale at the end, so you are getting three stories actually. If you love fairy tales you will definitely enjoy this one.
Katharina Gerlach has become one of my favorite prolific authors with a very unique and imaginative voice. I have read several of her books. She is not limited by genre giving me a different perspective each time I read her. I will keep my eye out for any future release too. A very satisfying read.
We are proud to announce that THE DWARF AND THE TWINS: SNOW WHITE AND THE ROSE RED by Katharina Gerlach is a B.R.A.G. Medallion Honoree. This tells a reader that this book is well worth their time and money!
