Briefly, he considered just running.
He considered making a dash for the dimensional door.
But he couldn’t do that. He couldn’t.
It was already too late.

The exciting conclusion to the Vampire Detective Midnight series!

Nick stood mere feet from the portal when the racial authorities descended. He stood mere feet from the dimensional door that should have taken him and his family away for good. He’d been close enough to touch it, close enough to feel it.

But it all got snatched away.

Now he’s back working the streets as a Midnight, a vampire owned by the human police. His bosses definitely grip his leash tighter since his near-escape, and tensions between vampires and humans ratchet higher all over the city. Hints of another race war are getting louder, but still, all Nick wants is to go home.

He’s investigating a double homicide at the edges of the vampire ghetto when a series of events make it clear things are changing far faster than he realized. War is coming, and Nick’s starting to remember his past, a past he did everything in his power to forget.

Can he outrun a world that wants to annihilate everyone he loves?

Can he make it back to his own world and the people he left behind?

VAMPIRE DETECTIVE MIDNIGHT is a gritty, romantic science fiction mystery series set in a futuristic, dystopian New York populated by vampires, humans and psychics trying to rebuild their world after a devastating race war nearly obliterated the previous one. This is the end people - we understand what happened and how did Nick find himself in a new dimension and where did Jen go. This is the story of how Nick tries to get back to the beginning with his new family and new/old mate.
It is an action lead narrative with all the people we love from this series basically following Nick’s lead around the new world struggling to get to a new portal.
For me it is not 5 stars as there are few things that are lacking:
1) it is a chronology of events - there is no mystery or even significant dialogue between the characters. Most of the main characters just follow around Nick not expressing anything significant. It is flat to be honest.
2) most is Nick’s internal dialogue, impressions and memories. Again not a lot of dialogue here…
3) there is no exchange or intimacy with Wynter at all - feels like she is just going along and having funny looks??!?? Not sure I understand why that is. We have more from Jen who is dead for a long time than from her who is there and alive.

So, closes the series and tight up all loose ends in a bit flat fashion - shame as I probably preferred this series to Quentin Black’s series.

In the final chapter of the Vampire Detective Midnight series, Nick is moments from escaping to another dimension with his family when the authorities swoop in, shattering his last chance at freedom. Dragged back into servitude as a Midnight—an enslaved vampire detective for the human police—he finds himself under even tighter control. As unrest builds between vampires and humans and whispers of war grow louder, Nick investigates a double homicide that unearths dark truths and awakens memories he buried long ago. With the city on the brink and his past catching up to him, Nick must decide whether to fight for the people he loves, or lose them all over again.

I loved this series and hoped that Nick would find happiness in some place. It crackled with desperation, systemic tension, and a fierce longing for freedom.it was a great example of an intense, final stand wrapped in noir grit and personal reckoning. Everything was clear and easy to feel and empathise with. A lot of action, danger and drama.

It's always a little sad when a beloved series comes to an end, but I can honestly say that this was an excellent wrap up to the Vampire Detective Midnight series! This book had a lot of twists and turns and even though I had a good idea as to how it was going to end based on the surprise ending in Black to Light, I still was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened next. I also want to thank the author for doing right by Dalejem. I made that request in my review of the aforementioned Quentin Black book and she definitely delivered. This is a great series and if you were waiting to start it, wait no longer! Thanks again to the author for writing such a great series and for ending it on such a positive, hopeful note!

Can they almost make it back to the world they think is their home. And can they all get to the same place through the gate? Only the end will let us know.

This was a nice ending but the back and forth with Brick managed to confuse me quite often. Still a good read.

Coulda and shoulda been better

This book is not as well written as the other books in the series. Considering this is the last book in this series I expected a stronger storyline with lots of character utilization and romance. Yes, at times, there were 'page turning' action scenes but not many. Some scenes were actually boring and the temptation to skip over paragraphs was very tempting. Nick is surrounded by people he trusts enough to consider them family. In the other books, they connected on an emotional level and developed love, affection and trust. They all worked together to overcome 'evil.' Yet, his interaction with them, in this book, felt almost nonexistent. The threat to Nick and his family is very real and this is the time they should be supporting each other emotionally. I did not feel the connection they usually have.

There is no romance with Wynter or anyone. None. I miss the romance. Nope, no paranormal romance in these pages. Just a paranormal mystery.

Jordan and Nick experienced similar trauma. I would have liked to see them interact more while Jordan worked through it with Nick. They are partners after all.

This series began with hold your breath, page turning excitement but ended with this book which was not as good. Anyway, this book was just ok, and I am very disappointed. I could have read the first and last 50 pages instead of the entire book. All the other pages were blah, blah, blah.
