I practically got whiplash trying to figure out who was trying to kill Cass/ Silver and why throughout this book. My gosh, it was action damn near the whole time. This book was told from Silver's POV, which kept catching me off guard for the first few chapters, but it all led up to Silver having some romance in this book, so I'll let it slide. Silver bonded with an alien named Mez and it was disturbing cute. Disturbing because I kind of couldn't get over her age, but cute because they really cared for each other. I was really freaking pissed that the book kept hinting at sexual situations, but not delivering until....... the epilogue where you read about Mez having 5 penises ANDDDDDDDDDD SCENE!!! Like what the.... WHAT???? That's it? You motherf......

Changeling is my favorite of the first three Weaver books by Vaun Murphrey. Changeling continues the story of Cassandra and Silver, two sisters trapped in one body in the rare condition called chimerism.

description

Kal, Cassandra and Silver's alien guardian, takes the girls to his home planet Axsa where things don't go quite as well as he had planned. There are forces moving against Cassandra and Silver, so they have to hang in there until they get enough training to protect themselves before they can return to Earth. The Axsians agree to let the girls stay if they will allow themselves to get tested by Sil, a scientist and a geneticist.

They do their best to assimilate into the cultures on Axsa, even though they are an alien. Their presence on Axsa stirs up political unrest and sets a chain of events in motion. Everyone wants to get their hands on the tests.

"Sil's voice was losing its strength but he made one statement that changed everything. 'If preliminary tests are correct, we have an Anamoly headed for a Singularity.'"

Cassandra and Silver are Weavers, an advanced form of humans. Weavers can access each other on the "web", a space of all Weaver consciousness - alive or deceased. They access the web with their minds and use it to have private conversations, share memories, and access other information. Weavers on the web do not look like this:

description
All Weavers have their own unique color signature. It is one of the ways they find each other on the web. Weavers look something like this on the web:
description
or this:
description

Weavers have a neat way to travel to other planets, and it does not involve the following. In fact, it does not involve any kind of space craft at all. Can you guess how they do it?

description

I love the character Mez!

Favorite quote: "You are my adventure. We can spend our whole lives exploring our differences and learning new things - together. There is nothing lacking for me. All of my life my mother has trapped me in the prison of her expectations. I have wanted nothing but freedom. You are my choice. I choose you”.

One thing I like about the characters Cassandra and Silver is that they get along very well despite their different personalities. Although Silver becomes obnoxious and a little irritating in this book and the next.

One thing I didn't care for was a particular Axsian anatomical difference described at the end of the book. Really? I thought the addition of that information was unnecessary and kind of dumb.

All in all, Changeling was interesting and entertaining, and I am glad I read it. I really enjoyed reading about what life is like on Axsa.

I’m going to be honest and admit that I enjoyed this one more than the first. Whilst I did enjoy the first book I felt as though there was so much more to this one. The creation of a whole new world and species was especially interesting.

I’ll start in the best place, though – the beginning.

At the start I was somewhat disappointed to find that this book was written from Silver’s perspective. If the truth is to be known I never really came to enjoy her character in the first book – in fact, I found her an annoyance. That, however, soon changed throughout this book. At first things seemed a little bit disjointed due to seeing things from Silver’s perspective but once events really started to get going I came to realise just how much I enjoyed her character.

Although, there were many other characters I came to enjoy throughout. The cast has changed from the first book as we’re introduced to this alien world. The world itself is a wonderful creation but the characters go above and beyond. Instantly you come to love and hate characters, with things being tossed on their head throughout. The way in which the alien world works, and the way in which characters deal with these things, are especially interesting. Each of our new characters are unique and great to learn about – if I’m being honest, I enjoyed this alien cast more than the human cast in book one.

Not to say too much, but the changes that take place upon this world are great as well. I feel as though this book really moves us away from the usual young adult book clichés. There are still a handful of the cringe worthy overdone things in terms of romance but it is something I managed to overlook as the differences between the humans and the aliens came to light.

That being said, it was the romance which kind of… well, to be honest, left me feeling a bit freaked out at the end. I understand why the last part was put in – it did cause me slight amusement – but it felt like a step too far for me. I have nothing against intergalactic romance – if Star Trek is your thing then go for your little green men (I know they’re not all green and Paul-like, don’t worry, I’m not that naïve) – but I would have rather not known the final details.

Overall it is a solid addition to the series, leaving me more than happy to pick up the next.

As a final note I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me the chance to read this.

This was better than the first book for me, and I really enjoyed the first book, but I loved this one! It was just as unique as the first book, and I loved that the setting was among aliens, and the aliens homeland. The author did an excellent job of creating a really interesting alien world, and created a very vivid picture in my mind as I read. I liked that this book's main voice was Silver's; it's good to have more of her perspective on things, and I liked her involvement with Mez. I love all the side characters; they were interesting and had levels to his/her personalities. I still don't like the age of the main characters, but I just pushed that out of my head, so I really wouldn't have to think about it, and it helped increase my like for the story. I like that the main characters are still feisty and intelligent. I also didn't like the time jumps; sometimes it was months, and sometimes it was years, and I feel it would have been just better for the author to have the main characters be an appropriate age for things to occur, then to have the time jumps. I also don't like the view of the main characters on intimate relations; that it's just a bodily need, and that it wouldn't matter if someone you were in a relationship with was with someone else, I just thought that was odd; especially with how the character acts after. I feel like this is stepping into iffy territory. I still really enjoyed this book, and I'm looking forward to the next book!

I really liked the first book in the series and I was worried that with the complete change of setting and all the new characters I would struggle to enjoy it as much. When I realised they were going to another planet to live with aliens I did wonder if it would end up getting a bit silly, but it never did. It only took a few pages until I was completely hooked again. Cass and Silver are strong enough to carry the new story by themselves until you start to get to know the other characters. I enjoyed the fact that Silver played a bigger part in this story, and we got to know her a bit more. I did struggle to remember a lot of the aliens names because the were only 3 letters long, they just wouldn't stick for some reason. I really enjoyed this book, I guess even slightly more than the first, probably because I knew the characters better in this one. The books had quite adult themes, so I never felt like I was reading a book that was too young for me either, even though it's essencially about a young teenager.

CHANGELING felt like a breakthrough when I began writing it in 2013. Chronologically it is the second book in the Weaver Series but I wrote it after VECTOR.

A dam burst or a block cracked and I began to face my writing fears head on. The inner critic that dogs all creative types left me pacing in my kitchen and crying when I was alone. Somewhere and somehow I convinced myself inventing a complex alien society wasn't beyond me.

CHANGELING almost broke me.

As I move forward with other books and other genres I can't help but look back for reassurance that YES it can be done and NO other peoples opinions don't define or constrain me.

I am who I am without any apology owed to my inner and outer critics. ;)

This was a good sequel to Chimera. However, I don't feel that I enjoyed it quite as much. It was a really good book it just didn't quite match up to the first one.

Cass and Silver are twins.. who inhabit one body. This book was a little more about Silver as we get to see her find her soulmate in this book. Mez. Mez is great. Kal and Mez are two of my favorite characters along with Cass and Silver themselves and James and everyone of the main characters basically.

Really good book. I would 100% recommend this series to anyone. ANYONE.

Thank you Mrs Vaun for providing me with a copy for an honest review!

Changeling picks up where Chimera left off. Our girls are now in an alien planet with Kal as their guardian, but they weren't prepared for reception they received...

I loved the new world and the descriptions of this new planet/people.

Silver cracks me up with her witty self and I really liked that we got to know her better in this installment.

On to the next one!

Changeling Weaver Book 2 by Vaun Murphrey

466 Pages
Publisher: Artemis Femme
Release Date: March 10, 2015

Fiction, Sci Fi, Fantasy, Alien World

Cassandra and Silver arrived as 15-year-old twin souls. Their mentor, Kal, has brought them to his alien planet for protection and training. Unfortunately, when they arrived at his home planet, things do not go his way. The officials are annoyed with him for bring strangers without prior approval. He is punished for his actions. Cassandra and Silver face obstacles at every turn. They are asked to perform healing and learn teleportation. After five years, their future on this planet is in jeopardy. They must return to earth to finish their journey.

The book has a steady pace, the characters are somewhat developed, and it is written in the first-person point of view. The first book was written from Cassandra’s (the active twin soul) point of view. This one is written from Silver’s (the passive twin soul) perspective. This book was not written as well or at least it had a very different feeling than the first one.

Took me awhile to get back into this series. For one, it had been awhile since the first and two, it was an entirely different story. I liked it as a stand alone once I got past the initial issues.

This is the second installment in the Weaver series.
Cassandra and Silver are being pursued by Shiva-a dangerous being from another world. In order to save them Kal must take them to his world to be protected by his people. Or so he hopes. Will his people accept the chimera and protect them as family would, and will they live to tell the tale of these new experiences?
Having found the first book a good start to the series, I had high hopes for this follow on but found it really difficult to read. In fact trying to review this book becomes complicated as so much of the book did not leave a lasting impression. A few issues that I found negative (without allowing spoilers) were right from the start the fact that Silver had taken over the narration. While I understand the reasoning behind it, her flippant and sarcastic attitude, especially for someone her age, in one who is meant to be special, is hard to take. When arriving on the other world, they are bombarded with hatred from others. There is so much antagonism towards them in particular, it seems contrary to what has been promised for their protection . At this juncture in the book an enormous amount of new information is thrown at the reader which is only explained much later and you find yourself rereading passages to make sense of words which cuts into the flow of the story. At one stage the twins refer to a character who they remember when seeing a hair wrap-but I could not recall a mention of this character at all! The violence towards the girls and the amount of injuries they sustained seemed excessive-even during the time period before healing could occur some cuts took place at bone level yet the girls hardly seemed phased about the pain. As with the previous book, the sexual innuendo and offerings for someone so young did not seem right. It is never fully explained what happens to a male when sexually turned away, even though focus is placed on not encouraging this. The time jump at the end leading towards the encounter is not enough to justify the missing years and experiences. The singularity issue was also never fully explored. And unfortunately editing mistakes crept in like the incorrect use of where and were or its and it's. Authors write in the style that pleases them and hopefully pleases the readers, and this subjectiveness does not always bode well with everyone. A case in point were the phrases "invisible thoughts eluded me" and "she was a carefully controlled loathing cake with an icing of distaste and filling of fury"-to me this dropped the audience level significantly.
And yet even with the myriad of negatives, the series still holds promise. The idea remains interesting and with two books in the series remaining, I am hoping for tighter writing, emphasis on the important sections of the plot and a more cohesive fit of characters and ages to situations.

*I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*

"Changeling" starts off quickly and pulls the reader right back in, beginning where book 1 left us. In this book we are given a new setting, moving from Earth off to an alien planet, Axa. Murphrey has a way of describing things in her writing that let you really create pictures in your mind, although I have to say that at time I felt there was almost too much information to take in.

"Changeling" is a solid second installment in a series that, so far, has been a good, solid, middle-of-the-road, choice of book for me. It has a likable MC, still our girl Cass from book one. However, in a twist this book is now from the POV of Silver (the alter-ego?) and I found it a little hard to adjust to the switch at times because of the circumstance. If Silver was just another completely separate character, I don't think this would have been an issue, but (sorry I don't want to spoil things for those who have not yet read the first book) as those who have read know, that is not the case exactly, and it was an adjustment for me.
As I got into the meat of the story, I was enjoying my time in this new place and found myself turning page after page wanting more. Murphrey again, sets up obstacles and gives the reader action and suspense all in a very set and deliberate way. The main reason to not go ahead and give this 3.5 or 4 stars instead of the 'middle-road' vote of 3 I did give it was that it dropped off short for me. I like my reading to be effortless and enjoyable. To crave to get back to my book and to feel for, empathize with or even genuinely hate characters - but to really have feelings around one, some or all of them. I just didn't get that with this story. I read along because yes, I wanted to see what happened, but the 'care' just wasn't there. This really became clear about 75% into it. I can't tell you what makes those feelings or connections happen or not happen, but I can say that I just didn't quite connect here.

That said, I would recommend this book to those who like Sci-Fi and the like. It may just not be my type of character or maybe just in general not 'my thing' but it was an enjoyable read with action and suspense, and I still think I will pick up the third book.

I'm not going to lie...I honestly did not think I would enjoy this book when I finished with Chimera. When I found out the girls were headed to an alien planet, all I could think was 'ugh, this is going to be so terrible and cheesy.' Well, color me wrong. I have read 3 out of the 4 books so far and this one is my favorite! Phoenix may change my mind, but for right now, this book is it! The world sounds so fascinating and I want to visit! I love how the girls took to adapting to their new world, as I imagine it would not be easy, and I myself would be terrified by these alien creatures and the way they are said to look. Which is what brings me to my next point...Mez. Lol, um, so, yeah. I don't want to spoil anything, but when you get to a certain point in the book, you will understand those 3 words, and why I laughed. Anyway, I do love how Kal's family warmed up to them and to him since he is not so warmly greeted. I know that Cass and Silver are tough cookies, but in an unknown world with aliens trying to kill you, it's a lot to take in on your own. Thankfully she has Kal's niece to hang and go to the baths with. At the end of this book, you can only begin to imagine what else could possibly happen in the next book!

Changeling picks up right where book 1 left off, but before long Cass (and Silver) are sent to the alien world Axa to keep them safe from the Soul-Eater and an assassin on Earth.

The alien world is interesting and I liked the description of the groups and their various abilities and social structures. One thing that I think could have been more fully fleshed-out are all the other alien races that are found on Axa as part of the big interplanetary alliance. The alliance and the other races are briefly mentioned, but are almost treated as throw-aways when they could have introduced a whole other layer of depth to the story. Similarly, Cass and Silver being a "singularity" is a huge part of the story arc and comes into play over and over again, but there's little more than a passing mention of similar events in the past or any other sort of rare occurrences - which I find to be a lost opportunity because without something of that nature to put Cass and Silver's abilities into perspective, the story falls too easily into the whole "average girl finds out that she has amazing abilities and therefore is the only one that can save the world" trope.

After reading Changeling and am honestly impressed with the differences from Chimera. This book is nearly and all around improvement over the first in the series. The side characters have significantly more depth and you feel far more involved in them. The plots in the book are far more sinister and diverse compared to the first book and you actually can find yourself trying to guess what might happen next. The romance is more involved and actually feels like a romance as opposed to just awkward teenage flirting. My only problem is that the characters from the first book pretty much disappear from the book. Maggie is the most involved in the story by far with James being mentioned occasionally, mostly in reference to the telepathic "get togethers" with Cass in the web. But Jerome and Kara are almost totally absent which is somewhat bothersome. I also would have like to see the author address exactly how a romance with two different guys is going to work since they share a body and the haven't seemed to address this with James yet. But all in all this is a very good book and a definite improvement over the first.

I don't usually read books about adolescent aliens, I have to state that outright. That being said, Earthlings BEING the Aliens, actually kind of worked for me. The First book was weird, this one is even weirder, yet I actually have grown to like the characters very much. The only thing I didn't love were the time-jumps, because it was slightly out of character for a series that is otherwise rather fast-paced and compressed (books 1, 3 and 4 all follow this style of timeline). The world-building and the Alien customs were fascinating, so the adolescent aliens weren't too overwhelming. I liked Sil and the technology, and the different powers that the different classes had. Cass and Silver were amusing as always and their struggle to exist whilst sharing a body, and having different love interests and personalities was intriguing. The rest of the series follows a fast-pace that is packed with action, and I would definitely recommend reading the other installments.

Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book. I give it 3.5 stars. This book was harder to get into compared tot he first book. For me it took awhile to get use to the point of view of Silver and not Cass. After reading the whole book I understand now why it was done in Silver's point of view and it makes sense to have it that way. This book takes place on an Alien planet and continues the story from the first book. You really need to read the first book before you read this book, otherwise a lot of stuff won't make sense. It was interesting to see the authors take on Alien life but really it's not much different then ours. The book moves along quickly in that for a little while you are at a certain point for several days then it's six months later but that is okay because of how the story moves along. I will be interested to see how this progress back on Earth.

Changeling is the game-changing sequel to Chimera, written by the lovely Vaun Murphrey. This time, we've got both Cass and Silver in full force, going back and forth to get practice at each other's life. At first, things were a bit hard to read the back and forth going on between the two, making it difficult to keep up with who was talking to who and who was narrating at the time. However, this did change as I kept reading, the task became easier.

I love this new world and the species presented to us. It's great to change worlds every now and then, especially when they're well written and described. I found myself... (more via website)

I need to say a special thank you to Vaun Murphrey as she responded almost immediately when I expressed my wish to read this but I was outside of the target territory. She replied straight away to say that the setting was now changed and I could download.

I loved that the author decided to write this book from the perspective of Silver, it was a nice twist that kept the series engaging. I enjoyed the world building in this one but felt it dragged very slightly towards the end as it got more political. The characters remained interesting though and it looks like book three will be taking it up a notch..

Changeling is the second book in the Weaver series and carries on from where Chimera left off. Cassandra and Silver are trapped in the same body, a chimera. This book is more from Silver's point of view. I found it a bit annoying to begin with as the character grated a bit in the first book. It quickly settled down though and she became a much more interesting character.

Here the girls have had to leave Earth and find themselves living in a very Alien World. The other characters seem to be more developed and there seem to be less grammatical and spelling errors so despite the more outlandishly sci-fi content I found that I was actually enjoying it more than the first.

Cassandra and her absorbed twin sister Silver space traveled with Kal, who is a 7ft alien. It is very hard for them to say goodbye to Uncle Jerome and Aunt Maggie. The girls go to Kal's world. He let them see him in his real form.
I couldn't get into this book. It was hard enough to deal with an absorbed "living" twin, but then throw in an alien planet and it was just too much for me.

A slight change of gears from from the first book. Though we are still dealing with the same over all picture. Our main characters are now adjusting to working together and a different world. There are some aspects that mirror that of Earth, while other part are unique in themselves.
It clear that thought has been put into the story, and is well worth the read for those who like stories that fringe the "othernatural" lines.

I really enjoyed Chimera, the first book in the Weaver Series. Changeling, was all that and more. I love how this book didn't fall into that all too familiar trap of being too similar to the first book, I mean it is set on an entirely different world and really Vaun Murphrey's imagination has no bounds. And what a world, filled with interesting characters, places, politics, social conventions and foods. Brilliant.
