This book defines the role of a prophet or prophetess and gives the reader strategic guidelines for judging prophecy. Many of the stories included are taken from Dr. Bill's ministry and add that "hands on" practicality that is quickly making this book a best-seller.
I have read a fair amount of books on the topic of prophets and prophecy and the prophetic ministry and this one still stands out in my mind as probably the most important one to read if you have received a prophetic word or have a prophetic gifting or calling.
There's an old saying, "What you don't know may hurt you." This book provides important knowledge to help those receiving prophetic words and I would say that such knowledge is essential to have if you are to see fulfillment of the prophetic words you have received or are about to receive.
In Prophets and Personal Prophecy, Dr. Bill Hamon gives great insight to the nature of the prophetic ministry and helps bring clarity to some of the ambiguous aspects of the nature of the prophetic ministry. It's also full of interesting stories from his decades as a prophet in the Body of Christ. Most importantly I found his beliefs to be Biblically grounded and sound.
Dr. Hamon covers such topics as, God's purpose for prophets, the nature of personal prophecy, prophetic terminology, five channels of prophecy, putting personal prophecy in proper perspective, hindrances to the fulfillment of personal prophecy, personal prophecy regarding everything from romance to pregnancy to callings in the ministry to divine healing and geographical moves. He also has sound advice regarding the will of God.
Another reviewer said that Dr. Hamon, "...removes the spookiness, fraud, mystique and hyper-spirituality often associated with charismatic gifts, particularly prophecy." I couldn't agree more.
I must add that cessationists probably won't like it, especially if they aren't even open to entertaining the idea that God still speaks today through prophetic gifts. Instead, I'd refer them to books like John White's "When the Spirit Comes with Power" or Jack Deere's "Surprised by the Voice of God." But if someone is curiously interested about the prophetic ministry and is sincerely open to learning about it, this is a good book to read.
This is my new propheric instruction book ("Prophetic Bible").
It contains what more recent authors I have followed and so much more. So thankful for the examples of good and bad outcome, precautionary stories, and trust predicated on the Word of the Lord God and His Holy Spirit in us. Thank you Dr. Hamon.
An older book, first printing in 1987 but so very relevant for today. An important book for every believer to read & study. I would classify this book as a handbook to understand the prophetic from a solid biblical standpoint. Dr. Hamon uses many scriptures throughout his book.
"True prophecy is simply God talking to us." ~ Bill Hamon, Prophets and Personal Prophecy, Page 213, Paragraph 1.
This book is a must read for anyone who is involved in prophetic ministry or has a desire to prophecy.
Can a prophecy tell you who you should marry? Can a prophecy tell you that you will have a child when you are barren? Can a prophecy save you from death?
These are only some of the questions that will be answered as you read this book.
Good book to give you understanding of personal prophecy. It was a great help in introducing prophecy in my life. It also enlightened me in more aspects of the prophetic and what to do after receiving a prophetic word.
