Where Have I Been All My Life?: How I finally grew up after a life of putting up, giving up & shutting up

Rate this book
'I became an expert at deception without even knowing it.'
Lisa grew up as 'Little Miss Perfect, ' a star student - smart and capable. She had big plans for her life.

Why then, by her mid-thirties had she settled for mediocrity? What had robbed her of her dreams? Why was she in a safe and unfulfilling job? Why was she in a toxic relationship with a controlling man she knew she didn't want to end up with?

After a shocking wake-up call she finally took action and in the process discovered that she had been existing instead of living for too long. Plunging on an inward journey, she explores her childhood conditioning, intergenerational trauma and limiting beliefs which reveal how much time she squandered putting up, giving up and shutting up.

Where Have I Been All My Life? explores the ways in which 'good girls' make valuable mistakes on the path to true adulthood, but when we release fear and pain, we become empowered to claim freedom and authenticity.

In this story of one woman reaching for a life beyond the silencing gates of shame, Lisa becomes unstuck and squeezes more joy and excitement into the last ten years than in her preceding thirty-seven.

And who knows what surprises the universe has for her when she stops trying to be the person everyone expects her to be and starts being the person she was born to be?

A beautiful and heartwarming story of how a powerful woman has built herself up from the bottom and showed how your life is full of love even if you don’t think it is and happiness can come from anywhere, at anytime in any way. Lisa a selfless person who has helped me and all of the people in her life in many different ways. This is memoir to tell young women they aren’t alone.

This second edition is beautiful. I have read the first and second editions and love the honesty and vulnerability of what the author shares.
The book starts a stating heart-felt intention for us to resonate with the story and “feel less alone,” and it delivers it beautifully. This is a journey of how someone reclaims her self, her beauty, her purpose, and her being. It’s inspirational and motivational. I rooted for Lisa as she took us through her journey, and now I want to do the same for myself, and shed those final bits of me that have been holding me back. Lisa expertly draws from different moments of her life to illustrate the lessons she has learned along the way. She starts with what already seems like a big “issue,” and slowly peels the layers to show us deeper “issues” and thus deeper insights. It’s clear, from this memoir, that we are a result of the accumulation of our experiences. Lisa shares how she accumulated these nuggets of wisdom, and how she learned to trust herself, her inner guidance, and reclaim her life. In sharing her story, she shares a deep perspective that can help transform your life.
Lisa’s story is relatable and although not intended as such, had a way of guiding me to through my own current difficulties.

Where Have I Been All My Life encapsulates the levels of pain, resistance and tentative personal growth author, Lisa Benson endured before she enthusiastically found a path to her true self.
I loved the readability of her beautifully realised story defined as women do; putting up, shutting up, giving up before growing up.
Lisa shines a light on the universal theme of the fool’s paradise of perfectionism for women (often perceived as successful but crumbling inside) and the serendipitous lining up of events that support a woman who takes back her life. Lisa tells just how she found balance and wholeness in a society defined by masculine values. I found this delightful memoir a practical guide for finding an inner reset and renewal of strength and spirit.

I literally could not put this book down. Thank you for having the courage to bare all sides of your soul. Every page revealed your wounds, your questions, your hopes, dreams and triumphs. Many who read your book will painfully connect with your raw honesty and heartfelt words. If your truth can help one person then your book is worth every written word. As I turned the pages I cheered, lamented, questioned but most of all admired your resolve to find yourself. I’m looking forward to reading more of your books in the future. Thank you for this one. 🙌🙌

Where have I been all my life is a heartfelt story on how a perfectionist who put everyone else first made the radical change to meet her fears and transform her life.

A rare and vulnerable share where I resonated with many parts. I loved reading Lisa’s words of wisdom on self-discovery, self-love, self-trust, and self-empowerment in her memoir and how that supports inner transformation.

This book is a MUST read!!

A memoir offers a unique perspective on a particular time in one's life from the author's point of view. In Where Have I Been All My Life, Lisa Benson shares her personal journey of self-discovery and transformation. The author candidly reflects on her life, admitting to making mistakes, and shares the valuable lessons she learned through therapy. This inspirational book is organized into four sections and thirty-four chapters, each addressing a specific challenge that Benson faced and the decisions she made to create a more fulfilling life. While the book may seem like a lengthy read at 300 pages, the language is clear and accessible, making it a smooth ride for readers. Benson's experiences are thoughtfully sorted, labeled, and organized into neat units that are easy to follow.

One of the notable aspects of the book is the author's artful use of flashbacks to provide context and history to the next area to be addressed. As Benson shares her story, she encourages readers to look back and evaluate their own experiences to gain insights and grow. Benson's memoir serves as a guidebook, offering introspection and evaluation without being prescriptive. She recommends readers, particularly women, free themselves from behavior patterns that proved damaging in her own experience. The author identifies ways in which even seemingly positive habits could prove to be based on or create insecurities and pain.

Where Have I Been All My Life is a cautionary tale that readers can learn from. However, Benson's journey of self-discovery and transformation offers valuable lessons on how to turn roadblocks into doorways for growth. It's an informative read that anyone can benefit from.

From the very first lines of Lisa Benson's book, I felt a personal connection. It was as if she had written each word, each sentiment, specifically for me. Her poignant intro resonated deeply, and as I delved further into the pages, I was continuously captivated.

"Where Have I Been All My Life?" is not just another self-help book. It's an intimate journey through Lisa's life, where she generously shares her moments of vulnerability, self-doubt, and transformation. Through her stories, I saw the reflections of so many women, including myself, who have often lost their voice in the cacophony of societal expectations and the pressures of being a perpetual people pleaser.

Lisa has an incredible talent for weaving her personal anecdotes with universal truths, creating a narrative that is both comforting and enlightening. Every chapter offers a lesson, a beacon of hope for those struggling to find their internal happiness and true self amidst external chaos.

This book is a treasure, a rallying cry for every woman who has ever doubted her worth or silenced her desires to appease others. It's an invitation to recognise and reclaim oneself.

Thank you, Lisa Benson, for lighting the path and igniting that essential flame within. Your words are a balm to the soul and a call to action for personal growth. Every woman deserves to have this book on her shelf and in her heart.

May you continue to inspire and be blessed in abundance. 💕💕💕

For far too long, Lisa’s memoir “Where have I been all my life?” has sat in my to-be-read pile. This week I opened it up and was immediately drawn into her story. I see so much of myself in Lisa’s confession as a recovering people pleaser and I was fascinated to read her journey into healing and self-love. Her writing is warm and caring, inviting us into the stories of her life and the realities that so many women find themselves facing on a daily basis. I was particularly touched with her vulnerability in sharing her darkest moments and how she eventually came to embrace them as learning opportunities rather than soak in silent shame. “Where have I been all my life?” is a lovely book that invites each of us to ponder our unique place in this world and how we can best make use of the time we have here.

Where Have I Been All My Life by Lisa Benson is a beautifully written story of struggle and determination. After Lisa has a rude awakening, she realises that life is too short to go along with the flow of people who don’t have her interests at heart, even if one of those people is Lisa herself.

She takes us through a very relatable journey of self-discovery. Finally, learning how to break her perfect mould, Lisa discovers how to be the best of herself. This book is humorous and empowering. A must for anyone who wants to grow up to be a strong woman who can trust herself.

I really loved this book. It was real and so relatable. Lisa was brave in sharing the big and small details of her life in a way that allowed the reader to see themselves with more clarity too. I had a laugh, and a cry and in the end, realised how so many women have been pulled into the tide of perfectionism and people-pleasing.

Lisa tells her story with such openness and truth, it felt deeply relatable to parts of my own life. There were moments where I saw parts of myself reflected back, especially in the ways we silence ourselves or hold things in. It’s a beautiful reminder that growth is always available, and that finding your voice can begin at any time. Leanne

After finishing this book I felt I was saying goodbye to a comfortable friend.
It was like reading my own story as there were many passages about the author's upbringing and early relationships that run parallel to my life; yet we were born decades apart. Lisa lays bare the intimate truths of how she lived a lie most of her life, and reveals a raw vulnerability and familiarity that is confronting and relatable. To finally speak up and then share her learnings is so illuminating and will no doubt touch the core of many women as it did me. I will read it again and highlight the paragraphs that really hit home to me, as a motivational reminder to be myself. This book is a must read for women and men alike and reaches across the generations.

Many people will relate to Lisa in this book. Feeling lost about where our life is going is a common experience we all have, at some stage of our life. It is a must read for all these people, including those who suffer from imposter syndrome, over achieving, self-destructive perfectionism, and the feeling to never be good enough. Lisa shows how important it is to learn to love yourself and experience what that love feels like, no matter how hard. It clearly was hard for Lisa. The honesty with which she describes her journey, her loosing herself for many years, explains why it took her five years to write this book. I can highly recommend this book to all!
