I love Splat so much that I considered buying this book. As I am of limited funds--in fact, my NAME might as well be Limited Funds, except for the inconvenience of changing my initials--I decided to look at it in the library. Repeatedly. If either of my nieces goes in for motherhood, though, the kids are getting this book.

The illustrations are big, bright, brash, and unique in style. Splat is a cat of good upbringing and even better conscience: his best friend is Seymour the mouse, and Splat has chosen the vegetarian option [Note: in real life, of course, such a diet would gradually kill a cat. But we get to escape real life while accompanying Splat!]. Some of the comic physical references in this series are on the slightly funky side, but not enough (unlike the "Walter, the farting dog" books) to embarrass Grandma if she is assigned the reading of a bedtime story.

The only "Splat" book I enjoyed more than this one was Scotton's Valentine's Day book, "Love, Splat". The gentle encouragement to children to be liked for who they really are is wonderfully presented.

It should also be noted that children ADORE "Walter, the farting dog".

Drawn in by its whimsical title and droll cover illustrations, I had hopes that Splat the Cat would prove to be one of those quirky and endearing picture books that can satisfy readers both young and old. I suppose I was expecting something in the same vein as Daniel Pinkwater's Bad Bear books, or Jackie French's Diary of a Wombat .

Unfortunately, this tale of a cat and his (much feared) first day of school, simply didn't deliver. There are any number of children's books meant to reassure young readers about starting school, and Splat the Cat simply doesn't stand out from the crowd. Even the sub-plot with Splat's pet mouse, Seymour, didn't feel that convincing. Scotton's illustrations are cute at first, but it soon becomes apparent that the google-eyed Splat always seems to be wearing the same basic expression. It's possible that my atrocious head-cold, and attendant grouchiness while reading this one, have colored my view, but I honestly didn't see much here to rave about.

This book is adorable.

Why on earth did I read a book clearly intended for kindergarteners? Because even sitting in my ophthalmologist's office with my eyes dilated, I felt adrift without a book. Sure, I could barely see, but that's what books with giant words and adorable illustrations are for, right? You can't keep me from reading!

Plus, look at that cover!

Sometimes it's fun to read new children's books and compare them to my old favorites. This book isn't quite up there with my personal favorites, like Big Al or Six Dinner Sid, but it made me smile and I loved the message. I know I would have loved it when I was a little kid and I can't think of any higher praise. The illustrations are beautiful and whimsical and the fact that Splat has a pet mouse named Seymour made me laugh and half the waiting room looked at me like I was nuts.

I REGRET NOTHING.

A potentially dangerous text that will end in the death of countless mice because of Mr. Scotton's refusal to accept the terrifying Darwinian truth about this dark world. The scene when all the cats drink milk through bendy straws is really cute though.

Splat the Cat is a very interesting story for children 3-4 years old. Splat does not want to go to school and uses many excuses to avoid going to school. Failing to convince his Mum, Splat takes his pet mouse, Seymour, in his lunch box. Splat makes lots of friends at school and learns a few about cats, until he is informed that Cats chase mice. Lunch time approaches and out comes Seymour and scares away all the cats.

I found this book very fun and exciting, the pictures are very humorous and exciting to see. Scotton uses alliteration and humor in the story, which I think would keep children engaged. I also believe it would comfort children who are also starting school or trying to settle in nursery, they can relate to Splat the Cat and see that school may not be as bad as they think.

Adorable!!!! I love the pictures. Splat doesn't want to go to school! He packs up his mouse friend Seymour bc mom makes him go. Seymour rides along in the lunchbox. Splat ends up loving school bc he learns he is amazing from his teacher and makes lots of friends. This is just the purr-fect book. Hurray! I am going to read all of the Splat the Cat books now!

It's Splat's first day of school and he's worried about making new friends. He makes several attempts to try and get out of going to school, but his mum soon manages to drag him to school! Splat decides to bring along his pet mouse, Seymour, and hides him in his lunchbox. The teacher, Mrs. Wimpydimple, introduces Splat to the class and he soon starts learning all his important cat lessons. But when Seymour escapes and the cats try to chase him, Splat's worried again about keeping all his friends old and new. Mrs. Wimpydimple manages to stop the chase and teaches everyone an important new lesson.

I personally found this book very enjoyable as it has a sense of humour to it, which is also apparent from its illustrations. This book would be fantastic to read to EY & KS1 children as you will find that many of them could possibly relate to it. An engaging book to read to children during circle time, to initiate discussion and sharing experiences.

This book is so cute! The illustrations were hilarious, even to an adult. The story being told in the book was definitely a true story that is applicable to many young children. It was about Splat's first day at school. Splat was nervous about his first day school and tried everything to try to be able to stay home. Once he got to school, though, he saw that it was not that bad, and he actually enjoyed himself. I think this book is definitely a good book for children who are going to be starting kindergarten to read.

This is one of the most adorable story and illustrations that I've seen in a LONG time. Rob Scotton's illustrations of the cats, their facial expressions, and positions are laugh out loud! I wish Splat the cat was around when my kids were young. I still collect these stories and when a new one is released, I encourage my kids, even though they're in their teens, to look at it. I watch them and see the smiles on their faces. I read them to my students at school and they also adore the pictures. Awesome Splat books!

I love Splat! This is the first of Rob Scotton's "Splat" series and definitely one of the best. Splat the Cat is worried about his first day of school and tries everything he can so that his mother won't make him go. Once at school, he makes new friends and learns valuable lessons. He decided that school wasn't so bad afterall. I think that this is a great book to read on the first day of school so that the kids know that it is okay to be worried but that everything will turn out great. Splat is a new character and is both adorable and very funny. Kids love him!

Lagi-lagi, menemukan harta karun di tumpukan buku-buku di lemari kantor. Buku bergambar untuk anak-anak. Menarik. Menghibur. Gambarnya lucu. Dan ... kucing!

Ceritanya tentang hari pertama Splat masuk sekolah. Diawali dengan ketakutan tidak mempunyai teman sehingga ogah-ogahan dan membawa tikus peliharaannya bernama Seymour, berakhir dengan Splat yang memiliki banyak teman dan antusias untuk sekolah di hari berikutnya.

Despite this being a children's book, Splat's struggle to get out of bed in the morning eerily mirrors my own struggle to get out of bed for work, teehee!

This was quite the charming tale. The only quibble I had was with the artwork. I'm so sorry Splat, but you're just not as adorable looking as other illustrated cats.

I LOVE CATS, I SWEAR.

Despite my unpopular opinion of the artwork, this was a sweet, adorable tale that I would recommend for any child experiencing first day of school jitters.

I read this book at a school bookfair and fell in love with it and had to buy it. Splat is a loving cat who teaches us that we don't have to give in to societys expectations. This book teaches a good lesson in friendship and that just because you're "not supposed" to be friends with someone dosent mean you can't. This book also teaches that if you don't agree with soemthing to stand for what you believe in. The illustrations are also very captivating.

Audience: Boys and girls preschool to 2nd grade

Appeal: colorful, unique, animals (which kids love)

Application: I would use this for rhyming activity with the kids. The title itself has a rhyme and we could do a fun action that the students would have to do every time they saw a rhyming word. I could also work with them on pacing when reading a story. And helping the students relate the situation the cat is in to their own lives

This is another great book for the beginning of the school year. I would use this in my classroom at the beginning of the year or if there's a new student, to share with the class that everyone gets nervous about a new school. This could be used to discuss situations where the students may have been nervous but everything turned out okay. It could also be used to introduce the word nervous and its meaning and could be carried on by reading The Way I Feel by Janan Cain.

The textured and bright illustrations appeared to be leaping at your face as you read. They really added richness to the story. The story itself was good as well. It's about Splat the Cat's first day of school. He is very nervous and tries hard not to go, but once he goes he realizes that school is fun.

I would read this on the first day of school to a group of kindergarteners.

Splat by Rob Scotton is a terrific character! This first book about Splat is about Splat's first day of school, and standing up for your friends even if it means you won't be popular. This book is terrific for first timers to a classroom, and discussions about being kind to others/friends. The series also has highlighted vocabulary that would be perfect for vocabulary building (word walls).

Rob Scotton’s illustrations are great and the story of Splat taking his mouse Seymour with him on his first day of school is fun. I can see why other Splat the Cat titles followed.

Also, the Harper Collins 2008 hardcover edition has the ideal sturdiness and dimensions for reading with the 3-7 year olds that the book is targeting.

Splat the Cat
(children's literature, animal story, back-to-school)

Splat the Cat is a fun book about a little cat who is nervous about his first day of school. He does everything he can to stay home. Once Splat the Cat finally gets to school, something happens and Splat is worried he will not have any friends. Splat the Cat is a story children can relate to because they all know what it's like to feel the first day of school jitters!

If you are a teacher, this would be a great story to use with your lessons about beginning, middle and end, story elements, and making text-to-self connections.

Best for early elementary. Whole group, small group, and independent reading.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was about a cat trying to come up with every excuse as to why he doesn’t want to go to school because he is nervous he got through the first day and learned lots of new things about cats and made a ton of friends the end of the book ended with splat the cat not being afraid to go to school anymore instead he was excited! It also teaches children about cats and what they do and why they do it. It is a cute book to read to child that are feeling anxious about moving to a new school.

Noah likes the fact the cat is a cat and we have cats. Yet, the story itself lacks structure and purpose and attempts to be long, yet jumps savagely from one aspect to another (particularly) in the latter half. Perhaps, the other should have opted for 64 pages rather than an abridged version of his idea.
