When Nora Ingram-Sheldon learns her fugitive criminal husband had (has?) his crooked fingers in even more May County, Washington businesses, and that his involvement puts her new friends and neighbors at risk, what can she do but go on the hunt — for answers, for culprits, and for cracks she can widen in his many-tentacled money laundering enterprise?
But an omnipresent FBI security detail puts a damper on her movements, plus she’s supposed to be a good example for the band of misfit boys in foster care at Mayfield’s poor farm.
Maybe undercover is the way to go. Can she sneak away from her faithful executive assistant, Clarice, and Walt Neftali, the boys’ guardian?
The tricky part is finding and putting her husband’s gangster clients out of commission before they do the same to her.
Jerusha Jones lives in a small town in the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. When she grows up, she fully intends to be a feisty old lady. In the meantime, she regularly maxes out her library's lending limit, has happily declared a truce with the clover in the lawn, but is fanatical about sealing up cracks in her old house, armed with a caulking gun. Due to the number of gaps she has yet to locate, however, she has also perfected her big spider shriek.
Jerusha loves wool socks, Pink Lady apples with crunchy peanut butter, scenery of breathtaking grandeur, and weather just cool enough to require a sweater, all of which are plentiful in the Pacific Northwest. She is eternally grateful to have escaped the corporate world with its relentless, mind-numbing meetings and now writes (or doodles or fantasizes or cogitates or stares out the window or whatever you want to call it) full time.
PG - suitable for teens through adults. You NEED to read book #1 to understand the situation and characters in this installment. ---- No sex No gory violence - shots are fired, people get hurt, but nothing stomach-turning is described. No harsh language On Kindle the book ends at 95%. I didn't realize nothing more was going to happen, although it could be said this episode had concluded. --- Nora's rich-rich-rich and supposedly wonderful husband is still missing. The crooks he'd been dealing with are still after their money, and Nora and her best friend are still keeping a low profile by living in a very small mountainous community. Excellent and interesting characters. Amusing situations as well as heartwarming ones. I subtracted a star because I expected more of a conclusion to Nora's troubles and that she might move on to other matters. Nevertheless, now that I know this is a continuing series, I am very likely to continue reading the books because I like the characters as well as Jerushua Jones' writing style.
I would have given this 4 stars, but like the previous book in this series, it just stops! For me, it felt like and instalment... The lack of completion aside, it's a good read. The main characters are pleasant and likeable and the plot is interesting, though the criminals are inept and nowhere near as ruthless as you'd expect, considering the circumstances. Probably just as well or Nora would've been dead half way through Bait and Switch. I'm curious about what Skip is up to, so I'll probably read the next instalment.
Great read! Jerusha grabbed my attention from the very first paragraph, and I stayed up late two nights in a row because I couldn't put it down. A well very defined main character had an interesting supporting cast. Definitely read the series in order....can't wait for book 3!
