The day Chloe Davis finds a priceless necklace washed up on the beach, she’s convinced it came from the shipwreck in the cove. To her, it’s a sign of acceptance into the idyllic world of Pearl Island where she’s lived for the past few lonely years as a peripheral member of the family who runs the thriving bed and breakfast. That assurance could shatter when a sexy visitor from New Orleans arrives with the truth about the necklace.

Luc Renard, a former classmate who had a hopeless crush on Chloe, is stunned when she flirts with the successful gaming entrepreneur he’s become. Then he realizes she doesn’t recognize him as the school geek he used to be. Nor does she know he came to Pearl Island to recover the necklace for his grandmother, its rightful owner. Should he allow her to think he’s a stranger and enjoy their time together, or tell her the truth and watch all that desire fade from her eyes?

What starts as a simple omission of fact quickly sets Chloe and Luc adrift in a sea of longing, love, and conflicting loyalties. Each must choose between the demands of family and the needs of the heart. Will love give them the courage to find a safe harbor where they both belong?

Most authors will tell you they've been writing and reading since childhood. Not me. I hated reading and never imagined I'd someday be a writer. Of course, the fact that I have dyslexia probably has a tiny bit to do with my aversion to the written word.

Nonetheless, I had a very active imagination and spent most of my school years staring out the window dreaming up stories. When I finally escaped the torture of public school, I attended Schreiner College in the Texas Hill Country. Schreiner specializes in programs for students with learning disabilities. With the help of a school administrator, who was willing to type out one of my short stories, I entered a writing contest—won first place!

That was when I started longing for a way to get the other stories that were in my head down on paper. But the act of writing longhand, when I couldn't spell, could barely read, and knew zip about punctuation, proved impossible.

So, I became an artist instead—and was perfectly happy.

Then came the day my journalist husband brought home a computer, and I discovered the wonders of "spell check." I cannot describe how I felt in that moment. That computer was like a magic box—a gateway into a world where anything was possible. I spend every spare minute teaching myself to type, read, punctuate, and somehow get my stories out of my head and onto that glowing white screen.

Ten years, and five complete manuscripts later, I had another magical moment—the day I sold my first book. When I got the news I screamed and cried and made a perfectly ecstatic fool of myself.

The journey to becoming a published author was long and hard, but writing is the most thrilling thing I've ever done.

Lie To Me is book four in the Pearl Island series by Julie Ortolon. It is about Chloe and Luc. It is a great read and a fitting addition to the series. Although there is not an introduction which briefly goes over the action of the other books, the way Julie has written it, you get the idea of what happened as you meet each of the characters. The characters are so real it is like the return of old friends. I simply love the way it goes back and forth from Galveston to New Orleans.
Luc Renard has come to Pearl Island Inn to talk to Chloe. Chloe found a necklace that she thought came from the shipwreck of Captain Jack’s ship; but in reality it was taken from his grandmother’s home by Hurricane Katrina and thrown up on the Pearl Island Inn beach by Hurricane Ike three years later. He knows it sounds improbable but he needs to get Chloe’s help in getting the necklace back to his grandmother. However, he has to face Chloe first and he is quite nervous about that. He has remade himself from the nerd he was to a fashionable gentleman on the outside; but he is still nerd Luc on the outside.
Chloe is trying to fit into the family at Pearl Island Inn. Although the family has accepted her into their lives, she still doesn’t feel a part of it. She runs the gift shop for the Inn, watches the children, and does whatever she needs to do to feel welcomed. When she found the necklace on the beach, she believed it was Marguerite’s and it was the ghost’s way of accepting her; but she never had a chance meeting of her or Captain Jack. When Luc comes to the Inn, she does not recognize him as the nerd from high school. She does, however, feel an attraction to him. What will happen when she learns who Luc is? How do her mother and grandfather fit into the equation?
The book seems quite simple from the onset; but as in life, nothing runs smoothly. The complications keep the reader coming back and back to the book.

Lie To Me is book four in the Pearl Island series by Julie Ortolon. It is about Chloe and Luc. It is a great read and a fitting addition to the series. I connected with this book and it was so hard to put down when it came time to go to bed. Oh I just love this series and I'm so happy to revisit Pearl Island. I have wondered as I have read the books if Pearl Island really exist along with the house if so I have a place I want to go. I can't wait to read the next book

He lied about why he was meeting up with her, then once she found out who he was and saw how mad she was, he continued to lie. Couldn't stand it.

This author's writing style just isn't my cup of tea. I enjoyed the world building and descriptions of the localities. But the characters came across to me as very juvenile - sexually active teens. The story arc was largely about them as young adults figuring out who they are and learning how to interact with others as adults, not as adults navigating conflict.

Loved it

Luv and Chloe come alive in this the last of the Pearl Island romances. I especially liked that the children who were born in earlier stories could see and talk to Captain Jack and Marguerite. And, that the ghosts helped keep them safe by tattling.

I'm not a fan of insta-love. Most of the time it seems like a crutch an author uses because they don't want to put in the work needed to make the reader really connect with the relationship of the characters. I understand that it does (rarely) happen in real life, but it just seems unrealistic in books because it happens so often. Sometimes, the author can make it work by providing an outside reason why it happens. This tends to happen by magic (including the shifter "mates" trope) or by revealing that the characters used to know each other a long time ago. Ms. Ortolon tries to use both, but really doesn't do either method justice.

Now that my diatribe on insta-love is over, I did kinda like the book. I'd say 3.5 stars. The characters had real problems and (serious) communication issues which they had to work through. I liked that the characters showed growth. I also enjoyed the complexity of the supporting characters.

I did not read the other books of this series before this one and had no trouble following along. In fact, I might even be interested in checking out the rest of the collection.

I read the first book in this series and then jumped right to book four. I will go back and read books two and three at some point. As a standalone, this book was fantastic. I am sure it is an integral part of the series.

I love the dual settings of Pearl Island and Galveston Island and New Orleans. While I have never been to either location, I have always wanted to go to Galveston and to New Orleans. I am not sure why these two areas call to me like they do but I am a firm believer in places calling out to those who should live in them or visit them.

I also loved the premise of this book - high school crush and can it come true in adulthood. That is a question I think we all wonder about if we do not find a significant other after high school. I know I think back to that time occasionally.

Loved this whole book and want to read more. By the way, should ask why a trilogy has four books?

Didn't finish after page 43. This is an okay book. It isn't horrible I just didn't connect to it or feel drawn in at all. The characters are both fine. The plot seems fine. It's written from both perspectives so there is zero mystery about either of them or anything going on in their heads. If you like a slow, sleepy story and are maybe an older woman that likes these types of steady little romances you'd probably like this. The writing is fine and the characters aren't stupid or immature. There's just not much passion or emotion. No real ups or downs, at least not so far. But I just don't care about either character enough to finish their story. It pretty much flatlined for me.

Aside from the fact that Trilogies don't normally have #4's...

The first two chapters of Lie to Me (a free download) were stupid, cheesy enough that if I had already picked up my next stack of "to-reads" from the library I might have quit then. But it got a lot better. I especially liked how Ortolon showed how a geeky programmer could also be a hunky all-around great guy. The romance between Luc and Chloe was well-paced, and the "ghost story" elements were fun. Nothing about this book was sophisticated, but it accomplished its purpose of being a light-hearted but heated love story. 3.5 stars.

Pearl Islad book 4

I dearly love Julie's book. The suspense and romance is super. The series is built around a legend where a pirate falls in love with an opera singer. Margurite and Jack weave in and out of each story. I am not normally a fan of paranormal type books buts this series is the exception.

While I enjoyed the characters in this book I felt I was missing information on all of them. I never truly understood why Chloe felt that she didn't belong anywhere, nor why she was so desperate for some type of attachment. I also felt that her reaction to Luc's "betrayal" was over exaggerated and unrealistic. And really - the sketchbook?? (no spoilers given, but come on!)

I loved the whole Pearl Island series, and this book was an unexpected treat... getting to know Chloe as a grown-up young woman. Great story, love the setting, and Julie writes such wonderful characters that pull you in with them. This is a really great read for romance lovers, and you'll especially enjoy this if you read the first 3 Pearl Island books.

Anything set on an island or the beach has a lure for me. Pearl Island sounded like a place I would want to visit.
The protagonist has salacious thoughts running around in his mind from page 1. But the mystery of the missing necklace kept me reading on.
