She’s a freak

Born with congenital analgesia, Olivia York’s inability to feel pain is expected—feeling nothing at all is not. Betrayed and unemployed, Olivia joins Cirque des Curiosités, a traveling circus with heavy emphasis on the strange and exotic. She’s hired to sell tickets, but when her unique oddity is discovered, she becomes Orion the ringmaster's assistant in a dangerous performance on the centre stage.

He’s off limits

Cairo, the son of the Cirque's ringmaster is the one man Olivia needs to stay away from. But his rippling muscles, dark tattoos and sensual lips intoxicate her, and before long she surrenders.

When girls start to go missing, her burning need to solve the unfolding mystery leads her to After Dark, the erotic late-night version of the Cirque. Orion is determined to break her bond to Cairo through any means possible, even if it leaves Olivia scarred or dead.

In a world built on illusion and deception, Olivia’s quest to feel something more than curiosity might come at a very steep price.

** Deals with sexual themes that some readers may find offensive. This is a standalone dark urban fantasy novel.

So I've been mulling over how I would word my review. Because first and foremost I don't want to offend the author, I've read Therapist by Jaden Wilkes which is still one of my favourite dark reads. I think most of us go through stages in our reading journey, we'll flit from one genre to another but we always have one genre we always go back to and for me that's dark romance. Doesn't matter how dark or how not dark enough. Give me a couple with a controversial relationship and I'm all ears.

Freakshow is ultimately a romance, I'm sure you've noticed the fantasy tag so it's definitely something new from Jaden Wilkes. Unfortunately it did work out as well as I had hoped it would, once again I'm not trying to bash the book, I'm not in a pissy mood and using this review as an outlet.

Once of the many things that I didn't like about Freakshow was the insta-love, now if you know me you'll know that I rarely complain about insta-love unless it hinders the story. Liv and Cai's relationship fell into place so quickly I really must have missed the tension, build up or something to keep me invested in seeing them together. Their connection was so instantaneous that I ultimately got bored. This book could have taken so many avenues had so many twists and turns that I could just see happening but it just took a bland and monotonous path.

Liv has a condition that allows her to live her life without feeling pain, depending on how you look at it this could either be a curse or a blessing. But for Liv it's a curse. After getting fired from her job because of her condition, she ends up working as a ticket girl at the circus. Let me fast forward a bit... Girls are going missing, and for the most part the police take a backseat in this story and Liv takes it upon herself to find these girls. Hmmm this was another factor that contributed to this book feeling like a chore. I'm not one of the most finicky of readers but character development and then sticking to your characters personality is very important. What I'm trying to say is that these characters were all over the place, the story too. I realise it's fantasy or paranormal and trust me I am know newbie to these genres. Underdeveloped plot, underdeveloped characters and a really vague picture of what kind of fantasy this was, ultimately led to me being utterly bored while reading this book.

I found myself talking to myself, "What is this? What is going on here?" and not in a good way. I'm not talking about I'm talking about how vague and a little bit sloppy the info on Liv and everything in general was. You know what? Let me stop, I've run out of steam.

I'll spare you the details but Freakshow was a case of it's not the book, it's actually me. Read the book, don't let my bad experience ruin it for you.

Jaden Wilkes has written a wonderfully unique urban fantasy story, very well written you really get a feel for what the characters are going through.

Olivia York was born with the rare genetic disorder congenital analgesia. She grew up without ever feeling physical pain. She has suffered many injuries and she has always been considered freak. When she's hired to sell tickets at Cirque des Curiosités, she no longer feels strange and abnormal. The circus freaks are extraordinary performers, just as interesting as what they can do on stage. Olivia makes friends and for once in her life she feels normal, part of a group. When her disorder is discovered, Orion, the circus ringmaster, makes her work as his assistant in a dangerous knife show.

Cairo, Orion's son, is an extremely good looking guy with hot piercings. And he's off limits. He can't get Liv out of his mind and relentelssly pursues her. Liv's surrender is inevitable. She holds nothing back, and she gives him her all. When danger lurks and girls start go missing, Liv will try to decipher the mystery. Her curiosity and adventurous spirit will lead her to After Dark, a clandestine erotic show done by Orion. Liv discovers that there is a darker side to Cirque, a world that she belongs to and one that could get her killed. Who will be left standing?

The FREAKSHOW perfectly blends the magic and the mundane. Cai and Orion are darkly enigmatic characters. And, Liv learns she has more power than she ever thought ,but also that she’s in way over her head in the supernatural world.

The story is horrifying, exciting, adrenaline inducing, dark and gritty. It has all the elements to pull you in, adventure, mystery, hot romance, action, tension, strong emotions. In a side-show circus, the greatest attractions are the deformed, weird, monster-like people. The author builds a fantasy world off some of the most enduring elements of myth and reality. The ending was a bit different than I thought it would be, and I felt it was a little bit rushed. Also, I wish the side characters were better developed and there was more emotional conflict when Cai and Liv finally got together.

The story will transport you to a world where the strength of your magic can change your destiny, where things are not always what they seem. FREAKSHOW is a dark urban fantasy book that will draw you in and I think you will thoroughly enjoy it.

5 Stars!

"Until the stars burn out."

What a brilliant surprise. Can I tell you a secret? I wanted this book, needed this book, but I never read the blurb, never looked at any teasers. I just knew I had to read it. I'm glad I drove straight in, I may have ran a couple of red lights.

Mildly - Dark. A couple of dark themes. If you don't read dark books, I'd recommend. And if you do, I'd recommend.

So, who would've thought. This is Urban Fantasy, you wouldn't know with the first few chapters or the next. You ride along with circus for so long, you start to wonder. I can't spoil, I don't spoil in my reviews. Just follow me, you know you want to. I'm not giving you the run down either. I'm going to tell you how I felt. Now listen, this is important.

READ. THIS. BOOK! First, I fell in love with the characters. Yes, even the dark & delirious one. You knew I would, that's how I roll. Beyond all that, the story took me, I was away with the circus. I wanted to pack up and find one, just so I could find out their secrets. I was completely enthralled. Jaden took me on a whirlwind of crazy, I was the bystander that couldn't stop staring. The most amazing part of this story... The best... I almost cried, I couldn't believe it. There's this vanilla, sexy-ness that had me, there's this greater meaning that pulled at my eyelids. And it was beautiful. <--- Let's pretend I didn't say that. It was. Within the freak show, there was meaning and I fucking loved it.

Thanks, Jaden Wilkes for making me look like a big cry baby, I might as well hang up my Dark badge and join the rainbows.

3.5 FREAKY stars!!

description

My first read from Jaden Wilkes and I'm quite impressed. Intrigued by the title and promising blurb. Honestly, I loved at first until they reached the missing girl. It has thrilling effect. Too bad, it didn't hold my interest when the secret revealed. Maybe it's me not you but I still enjoyed the story. Welcome to the circus!

Olivia York has an abnormality can't feel any pain since child. Her parents always keep her alive when little Olivia is trying to 'rebel'. Now she's a 25 years old beautiful girl with no future and no parents. Desperately need money, she accept the job with a travelling circus. There is Cairo. She was enthralled by him. He's perfect in her eyes. Dark hair, deep eyes with perfect body full of tattoos. But Cairo is off-limit. His father also her boss, Orion the ringmaster and leader of the circus wouldn't let her close to the heir. Olivia didn't care until her friend gone. There is so much mystery about Cirque des Curiosités that she never knew.

description

Olivia is likable person and quite real. She's funny and normal like other woman. Sometimes I feel she love extreme outside comfort zone. She did tattoos and piercing when she can't feel the pain. In her sexual life, she never achieve orgasm. Cairo changed everything inside Olivia. She was completely enthralled by him. Cairo has his own way to win her heart. He's quite persuasive but has romantic and tender side. He could say poetic words also dirty talk.
“I want you to do it,” I said, now my ragged voice matching his. “Tear me apart and put me back together. I want to be yours, Cai, I want you to leave your mark on me forever.”

I loved Olivia's sexy perverted mind when she's with him. Their relationship happened too fast. It's unexplainable but they could feel the chemistry. They're lusting each other. They did what mundane people do. Building their connection. Story swapping. Although at this point, Cairo is too 'clean'. But it always quickly covered with their hot encounter. Do you know Cairo has pierced u-know-where? Hmm...

The story told from Olivia's POV, somehow almost bored me when reached half of the books. The thrill began when Olivia's friend is missing. They couldn't find her and assume she just leave the circus. But that's impossible because they're in different state right now. Orion always give me bad vibes. He control everything include his son. Sometimes, I feel bad for Cairo but everyone has secret, eh? I cringed a little when Olivia is in training with Orion when he discover her 'abnormality' and turned it into entertainment. The author is trying to mind fuck me? I thought something will happen between Orion and Olivia. I already anticipated it but... HUHHH???

description

Then everything turns into something funny when it mixed with supernatural creature. It's just too weirdddd... and Olivia quickly accept it. Orion's sick and psycho nature slowly surfaced when the After Dark revealed. It was so distrubing! Sorry, it didn't work for me. I hate After Dark. I expected something deeper and erotic. When the supernatural bomb landed, I didn't feel the adrenaline rush. The story is unpredictable but it was too coincidental. The ending still making me roll eyes. Silly much? Overall, Freakshow is a decent read and still entertaining at some point. I couldn't put it down until 5AM. Although it didn't give me WOW effect. Maybe a little gore but it isn't dark as I wanted. Disappointed? Not really.

I jumped into this book without reading the blurb. All I knew was that Jaden Motherfucking Wilkes wrote it and that's all I needed to know. I love Jaden's dark and twisted mind and I knew I would more than likely love this too. And I did, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was a different genre! Dark urban fantasy + Jaden Wilkes = Holy shitballs awesome!

Olivia was born with a condition that keeps her from feeling pain. She's always felt like an outcast, like a freak, hiding her condition and now she's found a place where she can fit in. Cirque des Curiosites. It's also where she meets Cairo. Dear lord, have mercy, Cairo... That man is an enigma, a mystery wrapped in a fire breathing hottie, I couldn't get enough of him!

~His scent drifted over me, it was masculine and he smelled powerful, musky and earthy. It didn't even make sense to me, but he smelled like he would fuck me hard and drag me back to his cave. He smelled primal.~

Probably my favorite quote out of the whole book. I read this and knew, KNEW, I was going to fall in love with him.

His father, though, is an even bigger mystery. Orion is his name and that's all I have to say about that...

Is it dark? Yes, but not too dark. I'd say that it's a good book to start with it you've never read a dark book but want to. That being said, you dark loving readers will love it too. I mean, it's written by the dark diva herself!

Go forth and one click it!

Jaden Wilkes is one of my favorite dark romance authors and with Freakshow, she takes us on a unique journey through the strange, dark, creepy and immensely interesting world of traveling freakshows. Olivia York's life has gone from bad to worse in short order. She has a medical condition that keeps her from feeling pain. After being injured at work, her condition is discovered and she loses her job. Then she discovers her boyfriend and best friend are sleeping together.
Things begin to start looking up when she lands a job selling tickets at Cirque des Curiosities, a traveling circus passing through her town. At first she plans to work for them only until they leave, but she soon finds herself fascinated by Cairo, the ring master's son. When her special medical condition is discovered she becomes even more embroiled in this strange and fascinating world. When girls start go missing she begins to investigate the even stranger world of After Dark, the circus's erotic after hours show. Wilkes weaves her most intriguing story yet with this novel. I was fascinating from page one and could not put it down. The characters and world built here were unique and disturbing and I highly recommend Freakshow to people who love their stories to venture into the dark.

If you know me, then you know... I don't read fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, shifters, talking animals or any of those things. I like real stories. BUT I have this infatuation with circus carnies that made me put all of that aside and read this book anyway. In fact i waited on bated breath for this release, I love Jaden's writing and desperately wanted to see what she did with the 'freaks'.

I was not sorry... you have write something pretty amazing for me to give an urban fantasy five stars and she did just that.

Olivia and Cairo were amazing, the secrets, mystery and undeniable connection I felt to the characters had me reading until 2am. I do not do spoilers, but I can say that my heart has been put through the wringer, i felt every emotion on the spectrum as i read this and I would recommend it over and over again. Even if you are not a fan of fantasy I think you would be surprised at how much you like this.

Brilliantly written, beautiful characters.

I loved it. Five Cirque Stars from me.

5 freaking stars!!!

Wow wow and more wow, this book is like no other, I've been eagerly awaiting FreakShow i have to admit the cover caught my full attention from the get go.

I was intrigued by Olivia from the very first page, she was born with Congenital Analgesia this is the inability to feel pain, at the age of thirteen her mother and father died in a car crash and she was raised by her older sister, who blamed her for their parents dying.

After loosing her job, boyfriend and best friend her life couldn't get any worse, worried sick about paying her rent and buying food she comes across an advertisement for the Cirque des Curiosities, this circus isn't the usual type of circus as Olivia soon finds out it has bearded ladies and sword swallowers etc.

Orion is the boss but its his son Cairo who ignites something deep within Olivia, she's never felt this kind of deep connection, feeling before, but Orion will do everything to keep the two of them apart, will it work? They say what happens after dark stays there and yes it so does.

This book is truly awesome like no other book I've read before, excellent writing, connection to the characters completely unique plot, suspense, love and gave me the feels!!!!

This book in my opinion is Jaden's best work to date, you need to one click this amazing freakish book!!!

I really wanted to love this book. It wasn't bad by any means but it was just okay to me.

Olivia was a difficult character for me. I liked her one minute then she was on my nerves the next. Overall she was just okay also. Her condition was explained quite well and I felt so bad for how diffcult her life must have been trying to not get hurt.

I did love taking risks after all and what was one more scar on my heart if it meant the possibilty of feeling something at all?

Cairo. I didn't like him in the beginning. He seemed swarmy. I grew to actually like him quite a bit. He surely did seem sexy as Hell.

The instant love between them seemed weird. I didn't feel the connection at all. I kept waiting for him to screw her over. The preternatural aspect of the book did explain this connection to a point where it was believable to me later.

Some phrasing just made me laugh and think WHAT??

It was lucky to be attached to such a perfect specimen of dickhood

He turned me into a sexual fucking Mother Teresa,

I could read 200 books and never see the words "waxed poetic" They were in this book twice!

Overall an entertaining read!!

"I carry the universe in my house of flesh, I will love you until the last star burns out and the heavens descend into darkness."

Olivia feels no pain. Born to be something other she feels she is an outsider in a world full of people who values only the normal, only the usual and she is anything but. Losing her parents and her grandmother young, left to be raised by her resentful older sister Olivia is adrift in a sea of normalcy that is slowly drowning her. Applying out of pure desperation she finds herself employed by the Cirque des Curiosities. And so begins her journey into self discovery, acceptance and all consuming love that is destined.

Entering the world where normal is not defined, Liv for the first time feels a sense of family. Exploring the new world she is now part of she tries to hide her own secret but there is more going on than she realises. Caught between father and son Liv can't distinguish between her instincts to flee or to open her heart. Orion, Ringmaster and the ultimate man in control, is Cairo's father and he takes delight in keeping Liv away from his son. Cairo ignites a fire in Liv that she has literally never felt before, he consumes her thoughts. Traditions and promises need to be continued and kept but Liv is the unexpected. Her appearance changes everything and her uniqueness fuels Orion's thirst to inflict pain and so begins the perfect pairing as the main attraction. A woman who feels no pain as the maniacal ringmaster throws his knives into her unfeeling flesh...what could possibly go wrong?

Freak show is a walk on the wild side; resplendent with bearded ladies, clowns, contortionists, sword swallowers, lions and tigers and bears...oh my! What goes on after dark is exactly that - dark. Greed and a twisted sense of family, Cirque des Curiosities has many secrets. Can an outsider ever really be accepted by the Freak Show? A completely different read that I devoured in record time. I lived the premise and the way the story turned into something delightfully unexpected. Well written, with engaging characters I laughed and cried with them. A gratifying no holds barred ending left me in desperate need for another ticket for this crazy ride. Loved it!

A five star freaky read.

“It was a delicious handshake; almost electric with the little jolt it gave me. Something reacted deep in my gut, some animalistic reaction to his pheromones or something, but it was there and I liked it.”

5 freaky stars!! Holy cr@p this story was so beautiful, dark, and sexy. It ripped my heart out but in so many great ways!!!

Olivia was born with a rare disease called Congenital Analgesia, which means she has the inability to feel pain. She lost her parents at the age of thirteen and grew up with her sister, who constantly blames Olivia for their deaths. Olivia is in a crappy situation. She’s lost her job, walked in on her boyfriend and best friend having sex, what else could happen? Low on cash, she decides to apply for a job at the freakshow, never expecting to get hired. Immediately she gets a response to come down for an interview. She’s hired on the spot and during her training she meets, Cairo, the bosses son and also a fellow “freak.” Olivia can’t deny the instant attraction she feels the minute Cairo and her shake hands. A feeling she’s never felt before. Orion, Cairo’s father, doesn’t want the two together, no matter how much of attraction these two have. But what happens after dark, stays in the dark…...right??

Jaden Wilkes has done it again! She has ripped my heart out of my chest and just when I think I can’t repair it, it comes back together. This book is emotional and gripping, but also hot and so super sexy!! Jaden is a crazy @ss amazing author!! I would read the phone book if she wrote it!! You need to go grab this book and read it now!!

This is the first time in a very long time that I am sitting down to write a review that I know will not do the book justice. This is one of those books you read then want to call all your friends and tell them they need to read it. As always Jaden used her insane talent to craft a story that is absolutely brilliant... but this time she pushed just a bit more and created a story that creeps into your heart and gets all wrapped up and twisted in there then just starts plucking away at your heartstrings and playing your feelings and forcing you to ignore that voice in your head telling you that you really need to go to bed now it whispers “just one more page... maybe a quick chapter” and before you know it your Kindle smacks you in your face because you fell asleep while reading but don't check to see if you lost your place because the story will pull you in again.
I strongly recommend you read this book. I warn you that it will hit you in your “feels”... a lot.
Gosh Jaden it makes me wish I wasn't already stalking you so I could start!
In the end this is my standing ovation.

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS PRESENT WITHIN REVIEW***

OMG! That is so not the ending that I wanted! I wanted more Cai! I wanted more Liv!! They so deserved to be together!! I have so many unanswered questions. I hope that this is not the end of their story! What about the two other sisters? What about Sea's destiny? And, where the hell did Orion run off to?

I really enjoyed Liv and Cai's story. It was like nothing I have ever read before. The whole backdrop of the circus and Liv's extraordinary gift was exciting and mesmerizing. And, Cai was just so magnificent! What a male! And, their intimacy was beautiful. Exhilarating! HOT!

I just had one small problem with the story. And, that is when Cai's gift was revealed. It just seemed so mundane of how it was divulged. No hoopla! No surprise! So, other than that the story's premise was fantastic! And, the writing was so passionate. Thrilling! Suspenseful! This was one unique find! I just hope there's going to be more added to complete the full story...

For the love of.. ker-plunk! What a shocker to find one of my all time favorite authors surpassing her writing genre in a completely fantastic hell raising, chit storm of never ending mind boggling, who dun it whiplash. I freaking love every dam character, yes even the father of all lies, the master of deceit, Orion.

So dam clever, absolutely unique this story is so unpredictable you will not see a dang thing coming until it socks you right between the eyes and maybe your lady bits and pieces. Beware this Author swirls and twirls your emotions up so tight it will leave you with muscle spasms just about everywhere.

I feel so emotional after this story my heart is so broken, reading the writing technique Jaden pens about her character Olivia and her inability to feel no pain just about broke me. The love she found with Cairo surpasses all she has ever known and somehow heals her and her newly found traveling cirque family.

Thank you Jaden Wilkes you sexy biotch I loved it and secretly long for my own d*ckhooded fire breather! xoxo

This book is so beautiful an unexpected. The plot line is utterly original and surprised me more than once, which I love.

Liv is not a typical girl. Born with the inability to feel pain, she has always felt like a freak. Out of a job, about to lose her apartment, she applies for a job with a specialty circus and for once in her life feels like she's the normal one of the group.

Cairo is the ringmasters son. Literally tall, dark and handsome. Very charming, and a truly good guy. He takes to Liv and even though she's been warned to stay away from him, they are like magnets to each other.

What I love about this book is that is not just a fantasy. It's not just romance. It's those plus mystery, intrigue and suspense. It keeps you hot and bothered and on the edge of your seat. It will touch ALL of your feels at some point in the book. It's so much more than the blurb suggests.

This book took Jaden a year to get out, and after reading it, I understand why. And like I told her immediately after reading it, it was totally worth the wait!

I am pissed...im pissed at ending, I'm pissed at Brigid, I'm pissed at Orion. I'm just plain pissed and heart broken! I've have only cried at the end of two books, Raw and now this one. I've been waiting so patiently for this book and the moment I saw it pop up in my Kindle store I thought it was Christmas and read this in 3 days! No joke! This is worth the read. If you're into paranormal then this is a definite must!! This book was worth the wait and I look forward to more ( although I'm still pissed at the end ). Now I shall wait and be patient for Serial, Volume Four.

Something a little different

I've been dying for something a little different. It is a captivating, dark story that had me sitting down and reading it in one sitting. Up until the last chapters I truly enjoyed it. The buckets for stars for me just because I truly hated the ending . Don't get me wrong , I found this book worthwhile read. I look forward to reading the next book in the series .

So, I thought I had it all figured out. I mean, I had read the first few chapters that Ms. Wilkes had put on watpad and devoured them every time she updated. So I thought I had some upper hand because I knew the story. Boy, was I wrong, it was nothing like it was supposed to be, but soooooo much more. I will forever love Jaden Wilkes

Unfortunately, I have to admit to being a bit disappointed. I thought the storyline sounded so amazing, but it just fell flat for me. I was ok with a bit of paranormal thrown in, but the whole Brigid arc was just a little much for me, and I can't say I was a fan of the ending.
