First, I’d like to thank author Jennifer Osborn for providing me with an ARC of The Haunting of Luke Schumer in exchange for my honest review. I’m consistently excited for every new release she has to offer, and being apart of her ARC team for another upcoming release has been an honor!

Don’t listen when the demon whispers! Push Hell’s deceit far from your mind. Don’t listen when the demon whispers; the devil’s playmates love to lie.

Luke Schumer is just an average guy. He’s a graveyard groundskeeper who lives a peaceful, simple life alongside his dog, Bailey in small-town Beckett, Iowa.

There’s not much to do in Beckett, though— so an estate sale ends up being peak entertainment for Luke after he finishes a shift tending to the cemetery one early evening. He truly enjoys spending the time wandering old homes and searching for interesting items he could possibly purchase.

When he comes across a sealed, tar-covered wooden box stowed away deep inside a bedroom wall, he’s instantly intrigued.

Luke has found his interesting item— or maybe it found him.

And from here, a story of demonic possession and small town horror takes off. It’s bloody, a bit gory, and one hell of a ride! The tiny town of Beckett, Iowa will face a carnage like none other.

Partially told from the perspective of the possessed victim with other alternating narratives, I found The Haunting of Luke Schumer to be an incredibly unique take on demonic possession.

We watch Luke battle his very literal inner demon, as he shifts between his personal feelings and the wrath of his possession. This calls for the reader to feel many emotions towards Luke, while simultaneously feeling bad for every other innocent individual in Beckett.

We often don’t get to see the internal dialogue or utter fatigue of those being possessed in horror books or films— so this was a great way to enhance the reading experience.

Jenn Osborn has done it once again. Who doesn’t want to read a fast-paced story about a demon wreaking havoc on a small town? This author easily wraps you up into her horror stories, while always tugging at the heart strings— no matter the sub genre. This book was a solid ★ ★ ★ ★ stars for its complete creativity. I’m not often one for possession stories, but this one had me immersed!

This was very hard to hang with. As you all know by now, I always appreciate when stories establish a select few characters and allow me, as the reader, to do a relatively deep dive into their experiences. It makes for a better read, flow, and overall more enjoyable outing with any author. Here, we were still getting introduced to the large amount of characters well beyond the first third of the book. And, while they were all connected, either as parents, siblings, etc, everything was too busy and choppy, making it hard to really follow what was supposed to be focused on. Yeah, it had some really gross and intense scenes, but, again, the impact was lost due to so much being thrown at the reader simultaneously. Fans of possession-based stories may or may not have some good takeaways here, but I don't think there is much appeal beyond that fanbase. I did enjoy the premise and some of the earlier parts of the story, but the author really needed to fine-tune their approach and make this a much more simplified and focused story.

Attention horror aficionados! You HAVE to get your hands on this unhinged story from Jenn!

This is a back to basics, Possession 101, no holds barred, goddam SCARY STORY. If you’re not freaked out, then I don’t think we read the same book here.

I would LOVE to see a sequel, or a whole dang series, it was that intense and amazing.

There was only one part I wasn’t a fan of, & many of you will be in the same boat of opinion. The dog got done dirty 😭😭😭😭 noooooo!

"The Haunting of Luke Schumer" is actually about single guy and cemetery caretaker Luke Schumer's demonic possession, and may be, in fact, the worst case of demonic possession gracing the horror genre in recent memory: the evil seems unstoppable, its deceiving nature fully distorting Luke's version of reality, his world collapsing bit by bit once he makes the super-bad decision to open a dybbuk box! Gore and all kinds of torture follow. (Watch out, animal lovers: Luke has a sweet dog, Bailey.) But that's just the tip of the iceberg: once Luke leaves his house, Osborn no longer holds back (does she ever?), and goes straight for the jugular; everything shown up to that point starts making sense, and all the plotlines converge to the most harrowing of endpoints. Prepare for supernatural savagery and creepy af demonic horror. And the ending will leave you speechless.

So many possession novels, right? Well, this one you WILL remember. Highly recommend!

It’s no secret I have been itching to read this one, not just because Jennifer wrote it, but I mean look at that cover??

But let’s toss in a mysterious sale, and buying things from it that may or may not be super fucked up.
I was sold, I needed to know, what happened and does this mean I need to start doing a little last second googling on an item before I buy my next thrift store or yard sale find??

This was even more horrifying than I had thought it could be, a gory and horrifying story of possession and one, I hadn’t considered before.

I know the whole time I kept yelling at Luke, like my guy please stop, this box, the one that wont open, was basically hidden AND your dog doesn’t seem to like?
Throw it straight into the trash and leave it alone, or that’s what I tell myself I would do.
But how many things do you take a little too far in everyday, and you realize, you too could easily be Luke, lured in by this mystery.

I already had two other, don’t fuck with the box examples in my back pocket for hard times, Pandora’s Box, and then how can we not mention Se7en.

But after this book, Luke is now firmly in the top three reasons, why I will not be fucking with boxes I don't need to be.

Thanks for letting me read this early

The Haunting of Luke Schumer is a new take on a possession story. I know what you’re thinking: it can’t be done, there are too many out there. But the Haunting of Luke Schumer takes us into the heart of the possession and then sends us flying down a path or gore and destruction.

The prose is flowing and at times, poetic in its very gory and very real descriptions. It is vivid, harrowing, beautiful, and grotesque all at once.
The story took me on a journey I didn’t expect, culminating in a fast-paced, charged climax that had my adrenaline pumping. I wasn’t ready for it to end, and I hope there will be more to come.

If you were looking for a happy ending, Jenn Osborn is not the way to go, but she writes tragic, twisted, and terrifying tales like no one else. Bravo.

Fast paced and brutal possession horror at its finest! This was one wild read that I could not put down. When I wasn’t reading it I was non stop thinking about it and couldn’t wait to get back to reading it! This was well written and descriptive with a great storyline from the viewpoint of multiple characters. I won’t be taking a mystery box found in the walls of an estate sale home with me that’s for sure! 🤣

Woah 😳
So, initially when this book was revealed I was immediately excited about it. After reading Moribund, I knew that Jennifer had a writing style to her work that flowed so well for me. In a way where the words are so tragic and crazy horrific at the same time. Both of these books have left me with some horror genre trauma. Especially this one.
This book was told in multiple different perspectives, a look at the same scene from different sources. And typically, that kind of thing is total chaos for me. But it worked SO well in this book.
I think that for me personally, while I do adore a good demon/possession story, you will notice a lot of them are very much the same. But this was so uniquely told, paired with some seriously gross yet awesome gore and this was just one of the best possession stories I have read in a very long time.

I’m so thankful to have been apart of this ARC experience. I cannot wait to get my physical copy, because my book shallow side has a large love for this book cover as well.

The Haunting of Luke Schumer is a grotesque tale of demonic possession, mental manipulation and deceit. No one is safe.

NO ONE.

…..

Im not really one for over the top, gore filled stories. But this story had the perfect amount! It was non stop chaos from the very first couple of pages and was relentless until the end. I had so much fun reading this, that i cant to see what others think when this book is available to the public. It was my “must read” of the year and it did not disappoint. I really hope this story continues at some point in the future. Super well done Jenn!!

A possession story that stands out from the pack, The Haunting of Luke Schumer is packed full of creepiness and gore in a fantastically written thrill ride that doesn't let up.

The story follows, as the title of the book suggests, Luke Schumer who is a content living his life as a groundskeeper until he decides to visit an estate sale where he discovers a hidden sealed dybbuk box and decides to buy it. Not knowing what it is, his curiosity gets the better of him and he decides to open it to unleash a demonic presence that wastes no time in possessing him.

Though granted, it sounds like a standard possession story, it is far from that. Osborn's tale stands out in its prose, the way Luke is portrayed as he struggles with the demon within and the events that occur which delve into truly deranged territory. There are POV changes between characters that show how things happen from an external viewpoint and makes the impact of Luke's possession hit harder.

The ending of this story really packs a punch and had me reeling for a while but that's a testament to how well this book is written. This one is an easy recommendation even for seasoned readers of possession stories.

Thank you to the author for providing a review copy.

Jennifer Osborn has a way of making me really care for her characters. When awful things start happening to them, I feel the gut punch. This book is probably one of the most intense possession books I've read. I read a LOT of demon books, and this possession is a bit more interesting than is typical. The ending is an absolute barn burner, and I had to sit in silence for a good few minutes to process. Another excellent entry in Osborn's catalog. 4.75 stars

Luke finds a hidden object at an estate sale. Someone took great measures to make sure this box is impenetrable. His dog doesn’t trust it. Still, Luke’s curiosity gets the best of him. What can possibly go wrong….

Always trust the dog. 🫠

Wow what a wild ride. I went in blind and left wanting to curl up in a ball and hug my doggo. This was a demon possession story told from the perspective of the victim and those who unfortunately crossed paths with the possessed.

This is my first time reading something by Jenn Osborn, and I’m excited to read more from her! I really hope she writes a sequel to this story.

This is brutal, visceral, and unflinching - no one is spared! It checked all the boxes for me. It started off strong (that opening sequence was HORRIFIC) and maintained that pace throughout. One of the reasons it stands out to me as such a unique take on a possession story is that the reader gets to see things from the perspective of the inhabited as it progresses. That felt really new to me, and it made the story that much more successful.

Overall, this was a fantastic offering with a lot to like about it. One of the more notable aspects here concerns the sense of originality that emerges from the way this addresses the possession that occurs. Rather than taking the expected route of someone sitting in a bed while being splashed with Holy Water as a priest yelled at them in either Latin or English to depart their body, this one adopts a more outlandish approach, utilizing the possession to turn into a slasher-style story. As we get an in-depth look at the early stages of the possession and how that takes over his mind, leaving him in a vulnerable state to listen to the vices in his head involving the sense of destruction and violence that erupts afterward. The exploration of his past and mental state goes a long way towards helping him realize what’s happening to him and the depraved depths he’s going to sink to.

That is unleashed in fine form when the second half turns into a wild slasher feature about this unhinged, superpowered figure running wild around town. Winding up at the bowling alley where all the other characters we’ve met along the way have happened to meet up as a source of escape from the small-town life, the experience turns into a feverish and frantic moments featuring the systemic destruction of everyone he comes across while also highlighting the discrepancies of his inner monologue instructing him to carry this out against what’s going on. The juxtaposition of how the voices in his head have coerced him into this type of action against the brutality that occurs is handled incredibly well with a lot of great action and a chilling finale, and is only interrupted by the repeated use of the same tactics to denote the possession that happens several times in the book. Beyond this, though, there’s so much to like here.

Review: The Haunting of Luke Schumer by Jennifer Osborn

Available now!

The Haunting of Luke Schumer hits the ground running from the start and never lets up. The prologue starts the story off strong with a flashback to a visceral tale of possession, which takes standard tropes and morphs them into something much more dreadful as we see how the entity ultimately wound up contained within a Dybbuk box. (If you aren’t familiar with the lore behind Dybbuk boxes, you will be by the end of the story. However, a good general rule to follow is that you probably shouldn’t buy a strange box at an estate sale if you hear it whispering to you from a compartment hidden behind a bunch of drywall.) Fast forward to the present day, and Luke finds himself in possession of this box, and soon under the control of the entity within it. Luke can’t tease reality apart from his new hellscape as the entity derives pleasure from distorting everything Luke sees to be perceived as demonic and horribly, horribly wrong. The story that follows is a tale of carnage and mayhem.

Overall, this was a fun one. Definitely be mindful of triggers, but this is great if you’re looking for a fresh take on demonic possession. Additionally, it takes place on Halloween night, so it would make a perfect spooky season read.

Thank you to Jennifer Osborn - Author for the review copy!

I received a copy of the audiobook from Fright Night Audio in exchange for an honest review.

Jennifer Osborn has been on my radar for quite some time, so I was excited to see some of her work in audio format. I haven’t heard Sean Walpole narrate anything before, but he did an amazing job with The Haunting of Luke Schumer. I am definitely looking forward to hearing more from both of them.

The Haunting of Luke Schumer is about a quiet groundskeeper who purchases an odd item at an estate sale happening in his quaint little town. Little does he know that his life is about to be turned upside down. Buyer beware…

Luke Schumer’s story is vividly beautiful, grotesque, and will leave you slack-jawed throughout. I cannot tell you how many times I whispered “WTF” and “oh no” as I went on this nightmare-fueled ride. I had to rewind at one point to make sure I had heard something correctly, only to find I had less than 10 minutes left in the book. Osborn does a fantastic job showcasing Luke’s troubles from several POVs throughout the story, which pulls everything together beautifully. I’ve always found possession stories scary, but Luke Schumer’s situation is something new and especially creepy.

If you want to read something that will sit with you for days, then give The Haunting of Luke Schumer a try. I bet you won’t be disappointed and will probably make you think twice about buying that random item you saw at ( your choice of creepy establishment).

A fresh take on demonic possession, this book had me hanging on every word and has quickly become a new favorite! I don't usually finish books in one sitting but this one had me hooked until the end!

Luke Schumer works at a cemetery and lives a solitary life with his dog Bailey. One day when he decides to stop at an estate sale he sees after work he finds something that will unleash an evil and change his life.

The book puts you in the mind of the possessed, his feeling, his thoughts, ripped back and forth between himself and the demon. It branches off to other characters throughout adding great depth to the story, their nights eventually intertwining.

At 150+ pages it packs a punch and will have you feeling all kinds of things. I got mad, I got sad. I might have even gagged a little. I definitely wanted to scream "What are you doing!?!?" more than once! And let's not forget, there is plenty of gore and violence to go around. ( including the use of a bowling alley ball return!)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a great demonic possession story or anyone who wants a nice quick read that you won't want to stop!

Jennifer Osborn definitely bowled a strike with this one, don't sleep on it!

The Haunting Of Luke Schumer
By Jennifer Osborn

Wow!!! 👹🩸👹🩸 This book shocked the hell out of me! Not only is it full of horror, possession and gore, but it has lots of surprises too. It’s a very unique and original take on haunting/possessions.
This story didn’t let me take a breather through the entire book! I’m floored at how fantastically amazing and intense this book is!
Luke, a guy living a simple life with his dog, likes to go to estate sales and search for unique and original items. On his latest trip, he finds a strange box that was sealed up and coated in tar. His curiosity got the best of him and he brought the box home. Luke quickly finds out that this box of evil should never have been opened, but by then it is too late. What Luke goes through is horrific and isn’t any kind of “normal” possession.

Thank you to Jenn Osborn for an arc of this creepy and very well written book. I love how descriptive the book is; not only with the imagery, but also with the intricate details within Luke. Lots of different emotions with this story!!

This book comes out Friday, June 13th and it’s a fitting date!
This is a definite must read!!! I can’t speak highly enough about this one! You have to read for yourself!!

Another great read from Osborn. This is my second time reading her work and both times she manages to take a fairly standard horror trope and adds a unique perspective to twist it into something new. In The Haunting of Luke Schumer we follow cemetery maintenance worker, Luke. One day after work he drops by an estate sale and stumbles upon a small, wooden box with strange carvings. He brings the box home and just about every bodily fluid will soon be hitting the fan. Similar to Moribund, Osborn goes fairly hard in this one so please check tw if sensitive to death of the more vulnerable.

It’s a shorter book so there isn’t very extensive character development, but what’s left is a fast paced possession tale. I really appreciated the dual perspective where we are given glimpses of where Luke’s mind is while his corporeal self has been invaded. It was like an even more twisted version of the Upside Down in Stranger Things and I’m here for that. I could easily read another book centered around where the mind goes when being consumed by a demon.

All in all a really solid book. It’s fast paced and I knocked it out in a few sittings. If you appreciate dark, gory tales of possession then this is one I’d give a try.

This book is a fast-paced horror roller-coaster. Told from multiple viewpoints, and wasting no time to get down to business.

Okay, so it has taken some time for me to process my feelings about this book. I went into it, mostly blind and I'm glad I did. It's a quick read, falling under 200 pages, but don't let that fool you.

Osborn holds no punches with her writing and delivers an impressively haunting, fast-paced, possession tale that had me gasping on more than one occasion. I don't want to spoil anything for readers, so I'm keeping this as vague as possible while still trying to do it justice. But, in my humble opinion, this must-read for any horror fan.

The book gives nods to its predecessors and then takes the trope to a place I haven't seen a possession tale reach in a long time. It's gritty and raw, it's dark and twisted. And I love it. This book does not disappoint and it's my top horror read so far this year.

(And, just as a courtesy reminder, this is horror, so some parts could be triggering for some readers.)

Story Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tear Rating: 💧

What the actual f*** did I just read? The Haunting of Luke Schumer by Jennifer Osborn was disturbing to say the least. Demonic possession, vomit, guts, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, creepy ceiling walking… you name it, this book had it. I physically flinched and closed my eyes a number of times while reading this absolute grotesque blood bath. While the shock factor was great, the actual writing was subpar; it was all over the place without a good flow between character perspectives which sometimes made me think that maybe I was being possessed. I honestly don’t even know how to feel about this one. It was very short, little to no character development, but it really did pack a punch. 3 ⭐️’s , no 💧’s, but tons of disturbing imagery to last me a lifetime! “Don't listen when the demon whispers. Luke Schumer is an introvert who works as a graveyard groundskeeper. His best friend is his dog, Bailey, and his one hobby is going to thrift shops, estate sales and the like. When he finds a tar-covered box at an estate sale, he has to own it. And, there the trouble begins.

Of course, he has to open it and see what's inside. Oh, Luke, you should have left this box alone! This book is told partly from the unique perspective of a demon possessed person. It's full of gore, gruesome deaths and continuous fights between poor Luke and his demon. And, the ending is perfect for this type of horror, open-ended and disturbing.

The author, Jennifer Osborn, is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Everything I have read from her has been unique, well-written, disturbing and often poignant. The narrator did a great job and added a lot to the book. If you enjoy this type of book, you won't be disappointed!

I absolutely loved this book! The characters, the pacing, the grand finale in a bowling alley… all absolutely magnificent.

On its surface, this seems like it’s going to be a pretty straightforward possession book after the title character, Luke, comes across a cursed object that he just couldn’t resist opening. After releasing a demon, Luke is isolated in his apartment with his dog right before hell breaks loose. Calling what happens next a bloodbath doesn’t quite do it justice.

Jenn did such an incredible job slowly building the horror until an unbelievably skin crawling and heartbreaking climax. I am equal parts astounded and disturbed by her ability to describe a scene and how clearly the images seem to crawl off the page.

I’ve loved everything I’ve read by her and I can’t wait for the next one!

Ok, so I've had quite the adventure with this book. First it was my mailperson shoving it into my mailbox and bending it all to hell. Then, I took it to read on a long drive to St. Louis and made the mistake of leaving it on the dashboard on a day of straight sunlight and heat, which made the whole thing fall apart. Normally I would have just moved on.

But this book was damn good, so I went ahead and got the ebook so I could finish it.

Honestly, demonic possession stories don't usually work for me. I often feel like so many of them are treading the same waters as the ones who've come before. But this one was a different beast altogether. There was a mercilessness to it, a volatile energy that was undeniable in both its horror and entertainment. It felt different in the best way possible.

This book is freaky. Straight up freaky.

The Haunting of Luke Schumer is a possession story unlike any I’ve ever read. Luke enjoys a quiet, simple life, spending time with his dog, Bailey, and going to estate sales. Always on the lookout for something unique, he stumbles upon a small box with strange markings etched into it. This odd object calls to him, and Luke is determined to find a way to open it. What emerges will unleash hell in his small town, and change his life in brutal, shocking ways.

I couldn’t get through this book fast enough. Osborn’s take on possession was bloody and incredibly disturbing. When she says no one is safe, she damn sure meant it. The elements of psychological torture and manipulation of Luke were profoundly horrific but also heartbreaking. This isn’t necessarily an easy read, but for me, it’s Osborn’s best work to date. If you’re a fan of possession stories, I highly recommend!

‘The Haunting of Luke Schumer’ was such a fun, gory, gross little wild ride where absolutely no one is safe. From the moment Luke stumbles across that strange box, it’s just chaos in the best way - bloody, unrelenting, and weirdly addictive. I loved how it balanced the psychological unraveling with full-on body horror, and it never let you settle in or feel comfortable for a second. It’s one of those stories where you keep thinking, “Surely it can’t get any worse?” - and then it absolutely does.

That said, definitely go in prepared because it doesn’t hold back on the nastier side of things. There’s a lot of gore, plenty of unsettling imagery, and I’ll flag a trigger warning for dog death in particular. It’s shocking, it’s messy, and it’s not going to be for everyone, but if you like your horror bloody, fast paced, and very unhinged - this one is absolutely worth the ride!

You are not prepared for this

When I started reading this I felt like I was watching a fun horror movie, I wanted to go make popcorn as I giggled along with all the messed up images that sprung forth from the beginning of this story.
Then I met some of the main characters and I liked them and my laughter turned to unease. I spiraled downward as I found myself wincing at the vivid horrors that were unfolding, actually audibly exclaiming my ohh's and ahhh's.
There is darkness in this little story that I found surprising. The perspective switching back and forth between Luke while possessed and the victims was unsettling. Let's be honest with ourselves though, everyone was a victim in this one including you as the reader.

Thank you Jennifer Osborn for this read!

Wow this book was absolutely wild. It really dived into the emotional journey of someone going through possession. But don't let this fool you - some of the scenes were graphic and gory, unsettling and gross.

This book was a SUPER quick read. I literally finished this in 2 small sittings and could not stop! The pace starts from the very first chapter, and from then onwards, Jen manages to keep us glued to the book reading, while the pace and suspense continues to build.

The ending was BRILLIANT AND CHILLING! Loved it.

Overall a fabulous read!!
