I wanted to sit with my thoughts before I reviewed it to see how I felt not running off book high. The beginning of the book took me out of the story a lot because I spent a very long time trying to figure out what the time period was due to some of the slang that used and references that shouldn’t exist in what I assume is early 2000s, but I powered through. A large reason I didn’t really enjoy the book is it didn’t feel like a romance 1. And 2. I disliked Honey or at least her reactions to situations. She knew Marq was in the streets at 15 going on 16 and knew when she was 2O whatever and pregnant. Keeping his child away from him or at least not even telling him knowing that he was basically an orphan and had almost no family was wild. I also thought the “anger issue” thing came out of left field because it wasn’t really a theme. Marq was a thug and acted like one🤷🏾♀️. I also didn’t like how he spent 6 years locked up and didn’t do shit basically. He didn’t end up getting his GED until after the fact and his goal ended up being an extension of Honey not his own. Also several times Honey and her friend made weird comments about Marq getting out early like well damn bro that’s weird because it absolutely alluded to the fact that she had no intentions of ever telling him. He was good enough to nut in you when you knew he was in the streets but not good enough to know he fathered a kid? I’m not saying she should have held him down cause FAWK THAT but knowing how he grew up and not telling him AND ghosting/blocking the whole family is OD.
Honey's Special Roux was a story about Honey and Marquise. They both were raised differently and chose 2 very different paths in life. But would soon find themselves falling deeply in love with each other despite warnings from family and friends. Marquise, being tied down to his uncle's business, created its own set of problems and life changing events that would force Honey to make a very honest, brave, deep, and heartbreaking decision of her life.
Fast forward, and Honey's career is booming! At the same time, Marquise is a free man. He has a chance to get his life together and get back the love of his life, his soulmate, Honey. But Honey's got a 6 year secret she's kept from him. How will Marquise react to this news? Will Honey give love a second chance with Marquise? No spoilers!
This book is a 10/10 and a definite must-read, in my opinion. It's a perfect recipe with a delicious mixture of spicy, savory, succulent, sweet, and a little salty thrown in but well worth trying and enjoying. Honey's Special Roux is a book that will surely grab the readers' attention and keep you engaged, intrigued. You will laugh, cry, cuss, get angry, and take a breath of relief while rooting for Honey and Marquise to get their HEA. Mya quickly became one of those authors that I just one-click. Iykyk.
Two people from two different worlds! Honey was a good girl from a well rounded family and never had any problems. Marquis was a product of the streets with anger issues. Honey basically forced her friendship on him when he was forced to move in with his aunt and uncle next door. These two were friends, lovers, and more, but life took Marquis from Honey when things were about to finally be perfect. 6 years these two were separated, but sometimes our plans are not our own. Back in the same city once again and free from the system, Marquis and Honey get there second chance and deepen the bound they've always had. This was a good read. I may not agree with how some things were handled, but Mya again brings us a story that keeps you wanting more. Happy Reading Y'all!💋
I loved this story from beginning to end. Mya kept me on the edge of my seat with the drama that was always unfolding in Marquise's life. Although she loved him with all her heart, Honey didn't play games with him, and she made her stand just when she needed to. I was glad to see them work through their challenges to get their HEA.
🌶️🌶️🌶️ A nice and spicy love story. I was captured from the first page. I'm not sure what I thought was going to happen.... But what did happen shocked me. Y'all just read the damn book.
I absolutely loved this story. I couldn't get enough of Honey and Marquise. These two were made for each other despite them being raised differently. I loved Honey's relationship with her grandmother. Ms. Janie wasn't playing about her grandbaby. Marquise was so hard, but Honey made him soften. She was exactly what he needed. Watching their love story unfold was everything. Unfortunately, circumstances led to them separating, but when they reunited, it was perfection. I loved how Marquise applied pressure on Honey. Mya don't miss, and this one didn't disappoint.
Beautiful touching story that warmed my heart ❤️ 💙 loved everything about this story from beginning to end the way he loved his family, so I'm glad they made it back to each other🥰🥰💗❣️
Mya captures romance so well. I loved the characters in this story. There’s nothing like a strong FMC. Marquis could be described as selfish but how would he know any better? He tried to get out and it was just too late.
Knowing this is another book of hiding a baby, I will NOT be finishing this book. I’m sooo glad I stopped reading at the beginning to read some of the reviews and found this out very early on. I really HATE this storyline and I don’t understand why these authors keep on using this for their stories. I dont care how good the book is I refuse to read it, and there is NEVER any real consequences for the female characters that do it, unless the female is not the MFC and she’s like a “crazy baby-mama” or ex that won’t let go. The no consequence is almost as irritating as hiding the baby. It’s not a cute storyline, and I don’t root for the characters after it’s done. On top of that NOBODY sticks up for the right thing to do, they may mention it but they just go along with the plan🙄🙄.
This was a story about young love that continued into adulthood. It included themes of unconditional love, forgiveness and not allowing your past to determine your future.
For Honey to have been so young when she met Marquise, she was very mature and extended the offer of friendship to him when everyone else deemed him a lost cause because of all the things he had done and been through in his young age. Marquise was a young man forced to grow up way before his time because he had to take care of himself since his parents didn’t do so and with that came him having to do things by any means necessary. I appreciated that Honey didn’t judge Marquise and that allowed for him to see her in a different light and accept her friendship. Once they became friends, it was up from there. They quickly fell in love, but Honey also told him that while she loved him, she didn’t live his lifestyle and wanted him to change it. When he finally was ready to do so, he had to suffer the consequences of his previous actions and that caused for them to lose touch for a while.
I appreciated that when their paths crossed again, Honey was eventually able to let him back in. These two were soulmates and loved each other hard and fierce. They were nasty together too. That kind of nasty you only feel comfortable being with your person. I enjoyed their journey to happily ever after from beginning to end and seeing them Marquise grow into something greater than his past.
This book starts off when the characters are teens and while Honey was young, I liked that she was self assured with good communication. Marquis was dealt a very bad hand and although he had a very tough exterior with everyone, including Honey initially- I enjoyed seeing their love blossom. Then the storyline ffwded some years and all hell broke lose and suddenly Honey couldn't use her words. While some part of me is proud of how she achieved her goals, the larger part was so frustrated by her keeping Quis from Marquis and his family. She became very selfish and judgemental once things went left, but was "My Man My Man My Man" when things were all good. I am not suggesting she be a dummy and put her life on hold or forsake her dreams for his mistakes, but she turned immediately- which to me - showed her true colors. Nonetheless, these characters got their HEA and their growth made me smile. I do wish the author told us why the police showed up at the house in the first place and what the charges were to get him those numbers because that was missing in the story.
Although I know it wasn't meant to be "cute" with all the things going on with Marquis in this book, there were definitely many moments that had me smiling and saying aww. Marquis knew nothing but street life from a young age; however, being with Honey inspired him to move differently. After one too many negative encounters, he knew he had to make some changes to keep her by his side. Even after he decided to switch things up, his actions came back on him and he had to fight to get Honey back.
I liked the pacing of this book because it wasn't drawn out but it was just enough time that passed between certain scenes for you not to feel like anything was missing. I also liked the two families in the book and how they supported Honey and Marquis as individuals and together. I really enjoyed the interaction with Honey and her grandmother, the way it was written you could almost feel the love between the two of them.
I understood why Honey made the decisions that she did in the book but I was also happy that she allowed Marquis to show her that he was a changed man and I liked how he wanted to add to what she had going on too. They also matched each other's freak level which was definitely up there..lol.
Marquise and Honey were each other's first loves. Their lives were going good until Marquise's past separates them. They are separated for 6 years until Marquise is released and Honey returns to town due to a death in her family. I loved how Marquise knew that Honey was still it for him and went after his family. I was glad that Honey didn't hold Marquise's past against him and gave him a second chance. This book had great characters and a great storyline as well. There were different tropes in this book - friends to lovers, second-chance and secret baby. Mya did a wonderful job bringing Marquise and Honey's story to life, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.
I'm a Southern Girl, so I really resonated with the Sunday dinners and cooking along side my grandmothers. It is memory that I will treasure forever.
Now Honey and Marquise were it for me. I loved everything about them as a couple. They were it for each other. Q went through some things because of his past and anger issues, but he made a change once he discovered that he was a father. He wanted to be everything to his son that his parents weren't to him. He loved Honey to no end, and he knew that he had to come correct in order to be in her and his son's life.
This was a beautiful story about family, love, and healing. Truly enjoyed this story.
This cover is so deceiving! I had a blast with this read; I was thinking one thing and boy was it something else. Two teens raised completely different but bonded nonetheless. Honey was “pure”while Marquise endured trauma that led him to be infatuated with the streets. From teens to young adults, to now adults Honey and Marquise had me on edge… so much transpired due to Marquise having the mentality he is untouchable & he can do whatever he wants. Time is something no one can get back; Honey realized she couldn’t save him from the streets… he needed to want to change and be better for himself. I was proud of his growth in the end but he had my pressure HIGH during this entire book lol.
This story was amazing. I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end. Honey and Marquis love journey had me missing phone calls because I couldn't stop reading unit I was finished. Granny wasn't just the matriac she was the person would approved all affairs. Its good that Chandler was taken care of because I was wondering what had happened to him. I'm glad after Qui jail time we were still given a HEA. I didn't want to give any spoilers. I would love to read books like this. 😊👍🏾👍🏾
Beautiful story from start to finish I really and truly enjoy the characters immensely. Honey and Marquis can is e knew they would be together from the beginning even when Honey's family doubted her relationship with Marquis she was able to keep their trust in her that she had made the right decision. There were some obstacles they were able to rise above them. Youngster as who love to mature adult love Family over everything great great read.
I downloaded this book because I liked the title. When I first started reading I wasn’t sure I would like it because the MC’s started young. I’m glad that I kept going because I truly enjoyed reading their love story. It only took me a day to finish it because I was just that locked in! Although I’m sure I have a few extra gray hairs because of Marquise lol I definitely enjoyed this book and will be looking for more from this author.
Absolutely loved it! I’m a fan of true love and what the MMC and FMC had was raw and pure love. She saw beyond his past and mistakes and they offered the best of themselves to each other. As time, tragedy, and distance comes into play it brings them back into each other’s paths. This time nothing could stop them from reconnecting with each other and building towards a couple of forevers!
Such a sweet love story! I enjoyed every moment of their story! I love how there were highs and lows, joy and pain, life and death! Every aspect of life was encountered and dealt with with respect and care! They loved loved each other from beginning to end! I love Love❣️
Honey was meant for Marquise! They were soulmates. She blocked his family but never got with another man. They happened to get back in town at the same time and run into each other someplace besides home! You can’t tell me they weren’t destined to be together. I loved their love ❤️
I’m not usually a fan of books starting when they are teens but i ate this one up. Honey seemed so naive in the beginning but she stood on business and in my opinion made the best decisions for her. Marq had a lot of growing and healing to do and i enjoyed reading it.
Good read and enjoyable book. I enjoy this author’s writing. I love how she has a good number of stand alone books. I’m appreciative of an author that completes such a good story with the feels in one book.
Honey got on my nerves but overall this was alright, kinda cute. I was thrown off that the two main characters were teenagers for the first half of this book (not that that’s a specific problem but ion think I was in the mood for kids) the book did get better when they became adults.
Honey and Marquise had a beautiful, but honest love story. It wasn't perfect and she was honest about not being able to hold him down during his bid. Glad their story wasn't over though their hearts found there way back to each other.
