A Deadly Game of Dating.
Choose One.
FEE. FIE. FOE. FUM.

Bea spends her days fighting to stay alive in post-apocalyptic Alaska. She doesn’t have time to believe in giants, true love, or fairy tales. That is, until she uses a strange staircase concealed in the forest to escape the latest predator trying to kill her. While hiding, she’s caught by Raiden, a giant with stormy eyes and disturbingly sexy fangs. For trespassing, he forces her up the stairs to his realm.

Upon arrival in the Fiefdom, she discovers that she’s the key to unlocking an ancient prophecy. Desperate for her to stay, the giants offer a deal—if she agrees to marry a First-Born son of nobility and become queen, they promise sanctuary to her family. Determined to give her loved ones a better life, Bea signs a blood oath that gives her four weeks to choose a husband from the Fiefdom’s most eligible bachelors.

But some giants want her dead. To survive, she’ll need to navigate a web of lies, discern friend from foe, and thwart multiple assassination attempts, all while balancing a complicated social life. Will she make it to the altar before she loses her life—or her heart?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was lucky enough to be chosen as an ARC reader for The Crimson Jewel by A. Gordon, and let me just say—I had SO much fun with this book! From the very first chapter, the fast-paced action and danger pulled me in and never let go. The post-apocalyptic Alaska setting was gritty and captivating, but once Bea climbs that mysterious obsidian staircase, the story really takes off. The Fiefdom's world-building is absolutely magical—equal parts intense, romantic, and immersive.

This book felt like Jack & The Beanstalk meets The Bachelorette, and I ate it up! The First-Born Sons were all fascinating, and I loved the tension-filled slow burn between Bea and Raiden. The “will they/won’t they” dynamic had me hooked. Bea herself is a strong, relatable heroine who I was rooting for the entire time.

The plot was clever, the twists kept me guessing, and the details made the entire world come to life. Giants definitely weren’t on my 2025 bingo card, but now I want more! A. Gordon absolutely nailed this one—what a gem. A Crimson Jewel, if I may say so myself. 😉

Crimson Jewel is a standalone Romantasy pitched as The Bachelor meets Jack and the Beanstalk that I enjoyed a lot!

The story follows Bea, a young woman trying to survive a post-apocalyptic Alaska. While she’s escaping a predator, Bea runs into a staircase hidden in the forest and is captured by Raiden, a giant with stormy eyes. Because she trespassed, Raiden forces Bea to go up the stairs to his realm, where she discovers she’s the key to an ancient prophecy. To make her stay, the giants offer her a deal: marry a son of nobility and become queen, in exchange they will protect her family. Bea accepts, and now she has four weeks to choose a husband among the eligible bachelors.

The Crimson Jewel has a story concept that feels fresh and new, which is one of the reasons I had so much fun reading it. I mean, there are (hot) giants! Definitely not one of the magical creatures I usually read about. I loved Bea and Raiden’s interactions. Their chemistry is special! But things are complicated, because as the prophesied queen of the giants, Bea agrees to choose a husband among four eligible bachelors—and Raiden is not one of them. He, in fact, ceded his position to his cousin a long time before meeting Bea. *dramatic music* And well, the complicated circumstances create lots of drama and lead Bea to make…interesting choices with the other bachelors. It was an interesting experience for sure. The part of me that ships Bea and Raiden wanted them together, but the spicy reader in me was enjoying the journey for sure.

Here are some tropes!
📖 Standalone Romantasy
❤️‍🔥 Forced Proximity
⚔️ Enemies to Lovers
💛 Friends to Lovers
🫂 Found family
💞 Not a why choose—but a who should she choose with so many options

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. Opinions are my own.

"So you're saying that just because I'm surrounded by roses, I can't think a red tiger lily is beautiful too?"

An exemplary read! This stunning cover has an extraordinary story to uncover. It pulls you right into it's pages!Crimson Jewel gives Bachelorette vibes with a Jack and the Beanstalk twist that really delivers.
Hailing from a post apocalyptic Alaska, Bea finds herself transported to a giant realm by a staircase in the forest. The world is beguiling with the world building, characters, and dialogue. Gordon does a superb job in contrasting both worlds! Really loved getting to know the domes of Fee, Fie, Foe, and Fum! There's also pegasus and griffins (I love all things winged.)
Let me tell you, Bea aint no damsel in distress. She knows how to hold her own. Throughout the book, she encounters many tribulations and surprises. I was rooting for her and a certain someone. You'll know what I mean once you read. My heart is so upset that it's all over now. A Gordon, we need more books like this!

World Building Romantasy

Post apocalyptic Earth and the land of Giants! The world building was so fun and I love how it borrowed from Jack and the Beanstalk. The bachelorette portion was a little trope-y but it did introduce you to the kingdoms in a unique way. If you like extra tall Hobbits, chosen one, romance (spicy but not too spicy 🌶️ 🌶️ from me), and fairytales, give this one a go!

Crimson Jewel; is one of those books that *should* be way more popular than it is. I started reading while deep in a reading slump, and it completely pulled me out—I couldn’t put it down.
Let’s talk about the cover first: *to die for.* Absolutely stunning. It was what first caught my attention, and the story inside did not disappoint. I loved every single chapter and kept finding myself doing that, “one more chapter” thing….The author gave each character such distinct personalities, and the main female lead? She’s witty, sharp, and genuinely funny—I actually found myself laughing out loud more than once.
The premise is what really sealed the deal for me. A ruined Earth? A giant, unfamiliar world? It was so refreshingly different. I’ve honestly never read anything quite like it. The subtle nods to our current world made me pause and reflect on the direction we’re headed.

If I had to list a con, it would be this: there’s no book two! I know the ending wrapped things up nicely, but I can’t help wanting more. What happens to the characters next? How are their lives now? And honestly… that’s not even a real con—it just proves how much I loved this story.
Highly recommend *Crimson Jewel* if you're craving something unique, fun, and full of twist! . 💎📚✨

Looking for a fresh take on Jack and the beanstalk? This book has got you covered! You’re getting dystopian world with fantasy elements! It’s so good! Ruby Walker thinks she’s just an average human with a few bonuses in her DNA, but there’s more to her than meets the eye.
After avoiding a military patrol she finds herself on a strange stairway. What is this place? Well, when she crosses paths with an irritated Raiden...she starts to learn that there are more than just humans running around. There are giants! No beanstalk included this time.
This romantasy novel has great pacing and will keep you page-turning as Ruby finds herself in quite the situation. Believed to be the Crimson Jewel who will save the giants she’s pressured into an agreement that should help her people, but will bind her to a first-born son.
This book is hard to put down. It’s heart-wrenchingly good. LOL! There was more than one moment we wished it had been a “why choose” type of romance, but it’s still good. We honestly would love to revisit other characters in this book in the hopes they find love themselves.

The Crimson Jewel can be described as a deadly reverse Bachelor / Jack and the Beanstalk retelling.

The action was non stop from the start, following Bea as she attempts to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where her parents disappeared when she was a child. She accidentally triggers a gate to the realm of the giants, and is basically kidnapped to explain herself to the Fiefdom (yes - Fee, Fie, Foe, and Fum being the factions of the giant Fiefdom). There, it is revealed that she fits the prophecy, and she gets tricked into complying because the only thing she cares about are her family and friends she is protecting back in the underground bunker of her life in the human realm.

Bea makes a lot of mistakes, understandable for a character in her early 20s, but she strives to do the right thing no matter what. The MMCs - yes, there are 5 of them - are each unique and lovable in their own ways. But she must choose a "first son" or die. Oh, and not only that, but others are trying to kill her just for playing along. She can't win! I lost count of how many times she almost dies. But hey, if she survives these "trials" and picks her king, she gets to be queen.

I enjoyed the worldbuilding of the Fiefdom and all the lovely creatures (like Pegasus - yes!) and how different each of the four factions of the giant world are. I enjoyed seeing Bea's powers develop as she spent more time in the giant realm fighting for her life. While I did see the ending coming, I mean there really was no other way this could end without me rioting, I liked how it all came together.

If you like these tropes, you will enjoy the book:
Standalone Romantasy
Choose your fate adventure
Multiple MMCs and Spicy times
Found Family
Strong FMC
Chosen One/ Prophecies
Forced Proximity
Strangers/Enemies/Friends to Lovers
Alpha Males (Touch her and Die)

Thank you to the author for the gifted paperback. Opinions are my own.

Saying this was addicting is an understatement 😍

CRIMSON JEWEL is a standalone romantasy that follows Bea, a young woman in a post-apocalyptic Alaska. One day Bea runs into a staircase hidden in the forest and is captured by a (VERY HOT🥵) giant, Raiden. Now Bea finds out she's the key to an ancient prophecy, and she has five weeks to marry one of four bachelors and become queen. Only two problems: she is catching feelings for Raiden and he isn't eligible, and if she sleeps with one of the bachelors, she has to sleep with all of them 😱

This book was wonderful! Having the love interests be giants was a breath of fresh air from the usual romantasy, and it was nice to learn about their culture, even though in many ways they are similar to humans. I also loved that we got to spend time with Bea before the "choose a husband" side of the story started. Seeing her life as a human and understanding her relationship with her people is so important to understanding her character. But I admit, once she set off on her "tour" to get to know the bachelors...that's when the book became unputdownable for me. Was my heart set on Raiden? Yes. But did I adore how WILD and spicy things got? Absolutely! This is NOT a why choose romance, but I kind of wish it was, and that we got to spend more time with each bachelor so the feelings didn't develop quite as fast as they did.

If you're looking for your next romantasy fix, this is it!

Here are some tropes:
- Jack and the Beanstalk meets The Bachelor
- Standalone Romantasy
- Forced Proximity
- Enemies to Lovers
- Friends to Lovers
- Found family
- Alpha male
- Cinnamon roll
- Tall FMC
- Not a why choose-but a who should she chose with so many options

Review 4.5 stars!

If you put together Jack and the Beanstalk with a genderbent The Bachelor you get this refreshing and spicy fantasy romance with GIANTS, prophecies, magical kingdoms and HOT bachelors that will keep you turning pages😍

Sinai and Eyal are giants and royals in their kingdom of Fiefdom. For decades the giants have not been able to conceive and their only hope is a prophecy:

“The Crimson Jewel it will take for Obsidian the gate to break”

In search of the promised savior, they travel to Earth—only to be captured by humans and never return, leaving their heir, Raiden, orphaned. Fifteen years later, Ruby Rose—a brave, red-haired woman —is living with her brother Kevin in a post-apocalyptic version of Alaska. One day, she and her dog Obsidian get lost and stumble into a magical stairwell-portal between worlds. There, she meets the gorgeous giant Raiden in a steamy encounter that ends with him bringing her back to his land of Fiefdom. In the giants’ realm, Ruby learns about the prophecy and agrees to stay with them in exchange for a better life there for her brother and friends. 👀

The chemistry between Raiden and Ruby is sizzling and romantic, full of tension and depth. But Ruby is bound by contract to choose one of five princes to marry—and oh boy, she takes her time getting to know each of them very well! I loved the freedom and tenacity the author gives her character. Forget why choose, now it’s WHO SHOULD SHE CHOOSE 🔥

3.5 ⭐️ What a fun read! I really enjoyed the world A. created and the magical places we get to visit through the story. Bea was a compelling FMC and her journey from the post apocalyptic Alaskan wilderness to each of the fantastical realms of the Fiefdom made it hard to put down. Very Dystopia meets Fantasy meets Bachelorette, all in Jack and the Beanstalk. What an original fairytale retelling! Thanks A. Gordon for the chance to read this book before its release!

Crimson Jewel is a fresh, hot take on romantasy. The immersive, lush world building, high stakes, and scorching spice had me turning the pages late into the night!

Bea is a strong, savvy FMC that you instantly root for. Each decision she makes is relatable... whether for good or not so good.

Crimson Jewel is unique, cleverly plotted, and the writing is vivid, bringing the world to life in cinematic fashion. I loved this book from start to finish and very, very highly recommend it!

Cool premise with the Jack and the Beanstalk retelling and the fantasy dystopia mix, but the YA writing style lost me fast. There is spice later on, but I did not stick around to finish. Just not for me.

I got this book at a con in October and got to talk to the author and get it signed! I always love the way it feels so special to get a signed book, and it was such fun to read through this book.

But first, the basics:

POV: First person
POV Character(s): Ruby (Bea) Walker
Verb Tense: Past
Trigger Warnings: Kidnapping, threats of violence, murder attempts, violent attacks/assault, self-defense
Spice Level: Multiple sex scenes.

I had a super long, very in-depth review of this book all nicely written out and then? Goodreads just disappeared it.

So this will be a shorter review but still cover the things I thought were relevant from my perspective.

I loved this book. It was slow, but that suits me. It was a standalone, which is a standout in today's current landscape of multi-book series. It was a hilarious premise taking the traditional Jack and the Beanstalk story and just blowing it out of the water.

I actually loved the premise of the old story of Jack and the Beanstalk being just a completely blown-out-of-proportion story that kept humans from realizing that there are multiple enormously tall staircases hidden across the world where giants can descend into the world of humanity to engage with humans. I loved that giants tended towards 7-foot-tall people who might simply be NBA stars in the US when they joined humanity. The idea that giants have no creativity and thus are jealous of and co-opt human's creativity was perfect! I adored that little tidbit.

I found the world-building in the land of giants delightful. The old tale with it's story of the way the giant calls out "Fee, fie, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman" is brought into the tale in such a unique way I loved. The land of giants is one of a fiefdom of different types of giants with different elemental skills. The fiefdoms? Their names are Fee, Fie, Foe, and Fum. I mean, how cute is that? I loved that detail and the way the different ones discussed their elemental affiliations, their appearances (redheads for fire, anyone?), and their love or dislike of humans.

The plot was great. It's nothing too unusual, but I loved that Ruby got dragged into the world of giants and was saddled with the title of the Crimson Jewel, a name of a prophetic person who is anticipated to help the giants throw off a curse, keeping them from reproducing and also making their numbers dwindle. Ruby has zero interest in being anyone's savior, but when presented with the option of being held captive or bringing her found family back to the land of giants where they can live peacefully... she reluctantly agrees to be the Crimson Jewel and signs a contract she hasn't fully read.

Of course there is spice in this book, and it comes about due to the contract she signed. And it results in her having to date the four first-born sons of the different fiefdoms to make a decision on who she'll marry and crown king of the fiefdom to rule alongside her. Over the course of four weeks, she'll date each of the first-born sons and decide which should be her husband.

I would have liked a bit more information about the dystopian earth Ruby and her found family are escaping, but I can understand why there wasn't more. The book was long as it was, and explaining more of the earthly issues might have bulked it out without adding much to the plot. And I assume some readers would find it too much.

This book was perhaps one of my favorite reads in the second half of 2025, though. I love a good slow build, and this truly had that. There are some little quibbles I had with it, but I can appreciate the story for what it is without getting too upset by what I didn't like.

Would I read another book exploring Ruby's experiences trying to unite the fiefdom? Yes. But this book worked beautifully as a stand-alone.

Some books hook you with a premise so bold you can’t help but lean in—and Crimson Jewel absolutely does that. Blending post-apocalyptic survival with lush romanticism and fairy-tale reimagining, A. Gordon delivers a story that feels equal parts wild, dangerous, and deliciously dramatic.
At its heart, Crimson Jewel is about survival, choice, and what we’re willing to sacrifice for the people we love—all wrapped in a high-stakes romantic fantasy that leans unapologetically into its tropes.

A World Between Ruin and Magic

The story opens in a harsh, broken version of Alaska, where Bea has learned how to endure rather than dream. That gritty survival backdrop makes the transition into the realm of giants feel even more striking. One moment she’s navigating a ruined world, the next she’s pulled into a mythic land ruled by prophecy, power, and ancient Giant bloodlines.
The contrast between these two worlds is one of the novel’s strengths. Gordon’s worldbuilding is vivid without being overwhelming, and the giant realm feels whimsical, dangerous, and steeped in old magic. It’s fairy-tale inspired, but with sharper edges.

A Heroine with Something to Lose

Bea is a protagonist driven by loyalty and grit. Her choices are rarely easy, and much of her strength comes from her love for her family rather than any desire for power or glory. When she is duped into a bond by a blood oath and forced into a deadly courtship—choosing one of the First-Born sons to marry within four weeks—the stakes feel personal, not just political.
Her reactions feel human: fear, anger, determination, and moments of vulnerability all coexist. Bea isn’t perfect, but she’s compelling, and it’s easy to root for her even when the situation grows morally complex.

Romance, Rivalry, and Tension

The romance is undeniably a central draw. The setup—multiple suitors, looming deadlines, and dangerous consequences—creates instant tension. Each interaction feels charged, layered with attraction, suspicion, and the knowledge that love here isn’t just emotional…it’s lethal.
Raiden, in particular, stands out as a fan-favorite love interest, bringing slow-burn chemistry and emotional intensity that adds depth to the story’s romantic arc. The romance leans spicy, but it’s also rooted in power dynamics, trust, and choice, which keeps it engaging rather than purely indulgent.

Themes & Vibes

Crimson Jewel explores:
* Survival versus surrender
* Duty versus desire
* Identity, agency, and sacrifice
* Power structures hidden beneath romance
The overall vibe feels like a dark fairy tale meets a romantic reality show, with danger lurking beneath every glittering promise.

Final Thoughts

Crimson Jewel is a bold, trope-embracing romancy that knows precisely what it wants to be—and delivers it with confidence. It’s immersive, dramatic, and emotionally driven, perfect for readers who love high-stakes romance wrapped in fantastical danger.
If you enjoy fairy-tale retellings with teeth, strong heroines forced into impossible choices, and romances where attraction and survival are tightly intertwined, this book is well worth picking up.

Perfect for fans of:✨ Romantasy✨ Forced proximity & chosen-one tropes✨ Fairy-tale inspired worlds✨ High drama, high stakes, and high tension

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

The thing I love most about reviewing is finding brand spanking new authors. Finding those new authors who smash it out the park with their first book is just the icing on the cake! This is such a book.

But while I loved this book, I really did, I hated it too. And I'll tell you why in a little bit!

It's a kind of fairy tale retell: Jack and the Beanstalk. I loved the play on words with that.

It's a kind of why choose, but Bea HAS to choose. Except her choice isn't one she is allowed to make, as Raiden forsaked (not sure that's a word, but I'm keeping it!) his First-Born Son status.

Bea has multiple partners, but not at the same time. I liked that she did that, to be honest, and it made the connection she had with Raiden more intense.

It's dark and deadly in places: Bea gets kidnapped, thrown into a ravine, and almost drowned, after all. Someone doesn't want her to make her choice, and I was a little surprised who was behind it.

Not totally surprised, there were some very VERY obvious culprits but a couple threw me!

I really REALLY want there to be more books, about the First-Born Sons and what happens to them! They play a huge part here, even if only for a week or two, but they too need a happy ever after and I hope the author writes them.

So, I loved this book, yes. But as I said, I hated it too. Why??

Single person point of view!

Only Bea gets a say and I wanted, needed, so DESPERATELY needed to hear from Raiden, and I do not get him. I wanted to know what he felt when he first met Bea. When he realised what she had done, and what that meant. When he found out she had been with others before him. And when that happened all at the end (not saying what, for spoilers!) I needed to hear from him when he found out what finally happened to his parents.

And I don't get him and this is the only reason I gave this book . . .

4.5 stars (but rounded UP for the blog!)

Well done, Ms Gordon (apologies if you go by anything else, I couldn't see otherwise!) seriously, VERY well done!

Crimson Jewel by A. Gordon
Imagine walking in style among giants! This brings a whole new take on Fee, Fie, Foe, Fum… and the four elements in a realm that is full of magic and secrets!
When I read the first couple of paragraphs a few months ago, I knew this was going to be something special. I was so excited to read the full ARC!
The world went to hell and Bea struggles daily with her found family to survive in a post-Apocalyptic Alaska. Every single day is a challenge to live and survive the predators, animals and human.
All at once Bea finds herself on the run from a voracious predator and stumbles upon a hidden stairway.
Raiden, a fiercely handsome giant captures her and takes her to his realm.
There Bea is given the choice to sign a contract giving her family stability they have never had. The catch is, she has to stay and fulfill a prophecy.
- A new take on speed dating, Bea has a few weeks to choose from the most eligible men in Fiefdom and survive. Some want her dead and others want the title. She is left to figure out who is friend and who is foe, while choosing her mate.
This is a brilliant tale! As you take this journey on the pages of this book, you will walk among giants. They live in a realm beyond imagination filled with natural beauty, magical creatures and danger. It is full of mystery, romance, and secrets! You will find some spice too! The first sons are drool worthy!
The characters are so well developed that the reader becomes part of the story. The structure of the worlds and the story are just magical. It is so well done that as the reader you will be able to experience it as though you are in the story!
I absolutely love this one! I am so thankful that I was asked to review an ARC of this title. I give it 5/5 ⭐stars!

My favorite quotes:

"A veil of warmth melted over my skin like the glaze on a doughnut."

"Because I realized at a young age that pain is the price of love. And I'd rather pay that price than never love."

This one is coming out in June 2025!

This is a book that deserves to become huge!

This is a standalone romantasy. Which if more books emerge, I will be SAT reading, so dear author if you read this - please consider writing more books in this world.

The book starts in apocalypse stricken Alaska (although the whole world has gone to 💩), very close to our near future, I feel.. A survivalist girl is being chased by a bear in the woods and ends up climbing a staircase that is ominously located in the middle of the mentioned woods. Long story short, she is captured by a Giant - Raiden due to trespassing and is taken to his realm. When they arrive she is told she is part of a prophecy and to make her stay they offer her a contract - a blood oath - to be able to bring her survivalist family and friends and keep them safe in the realm. Little does she know, but she has to marry one of the noble families son and become queen. So basically the bachelorette, but make it magical.
Our FMC Bae is constantly in danger. And the worst part is - the bachelor we want for her, is not even one of the options. 🫣

The pacing of the story is perfect. The chemistry between the characters is palpable. There are multiple MMC’s and even though I was rooting for one the whole time, I loved the journey. I liked feeling uneasy reading about the FMC’s choices and actions and it brought out so many emotions out of me, which was an utter success on the author’s part. And the plot twists were delightfully well written!

When I say I’d read at least two more books in this universe, I’m not kidding.

Tropes associated:

🩶Reluctant acquaintances to lovers (many would claim it is enemies to lovers, but I beg to differ)
🤍Friends to lovers
🖤Forced proximity
❤️‍🔥Not a why choose - but who would she choose with all of the options available
❤️Jack and the Beanstalk meets The Bachelorette

Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy. However, my opinions are my own, and this was a pleasure to read.

I'm a sucker for retellings and let me tell you, this did not disappoint. This was the first Jack & the Beanstalk retelling I have read, but it was such a fun take on it. Set in a post apocolyptic time on Earth, both humans and the giants are facing dying out if something isn't done.

Ruby "Bea" has been living in an underground bunker with her brother and friends ever since the world starting going downhill. Her parents disappeared 12 years ago, and the military "off grids" have been after her for years. Until one day while on the run from being caught her dog Sid leads her to a mysterious stairwell hidden in the forest. Letting curiosity get the best of her, she decided to climb. Little did she know her whole world as she knew it was about to change. Excitement soon turned into dread as she was soon captured and kidnapped by Raiden who she would soon learn was a giant and her fate would soon be decided. As her fate in the realm was being decided, she learned she was part of a great prophecy and would need to stay in the kingdom to fulfill it. Signing her life away to give her family a better life, she in turn had to give up on true love. Set to choose between a husband from one 4 factions, she had to fight to survive while Raiden was set on finding a way to get her out of her predicament.

New family and friends were found while other allies truth was tested. Who was out to harm Bea and who really wanted to see her succeed. She had to keep her enemies close and hope Raiden would find a way to be with her before her time was up.

I absolutely loved this story, a Jack & the Beanstalk retelling. What starts as a story of surviving quickly turns into quite the adventure.

Bea was a great FMC, she was independent, fiesty, vulnerable, but still likeable. Whilst surviving in a post-apocalyptic Alaska she finds a hidden staircase that leads to the giants world with kingdoms called Fee, Fie, Foe, and Fum! Raiden is the giant who finds Bea and takes her back to his realm full of mythical creatures. In order to save her human family, she signs a contract to keep them safe but didn't read all the small print first.

OK, so Bea has to pick one of the four first-born giants to marry in order to fulfil her contract, so she sets on on a tour to spend a week with each to help with her decision. This sounded like so much fun, but it didn't always end well for her as not all giants like humans. I loved all the different areas of the giants world, how they were all different but contributed to the world.

There is some mystery involved as you try and guess who it is that is trying to kill the human. There was one I definitely didn't figure out beforehand.

This could have ended up as an RH, but it is an MF.

- MF
- Jack & the Beanstalk retelling
- standalone
- post-apocalyptic

**Spoiler**
This story would have absolutely been a 5 star read for me, but for Bea sleeping with 3 of the 'guys' straight after decicing she was in love with someone else. I lost some respect her her after that, I mean, how in love can you be with someone if you can go and sleep with 3 other guys a week or two later. Not only that, but she was told that if she kisses/sleeps one she has to kiss/sleep them all, so it felt like she 'had' to sleep with them which took away her consent somewhat.

Well, the world had gone and done it! Bea and her brother Kevin after the disappearances of their parents spent all their time just trying to survive along with a group of people they had gathered and helped all the way. Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, better known as JBER had been taken over by a militia group that would send out once a day looking for and hounding them. Bea with her dog Sid would fish, and hunt for food to feed everyone but trying to stay hidden and find found left them all a little thin. One day as Bea and Kevin were out hunting a fly over from JBER they split up to make sure they could not find their hide out. When Bea was trying to hid a big brown bear came after her, as she was running to hide she ran into what she thought was a cave turned out to stairs and there was someone else there. Who was this man and he was saying he was a what?! Oh, come on not that old fairy tale. Who would have thought that there was another place, and Bea was considered to be very important to their survival. Bea finds herself in a pack of trouble by not reading the fine print on the contract. You have to read the story to see how she is to date a group of 1st born sons, pick one, and all the time someone is trying to kill her, dumping her in a volcano, the sea, and various other ways. Plus, you just have to shake your head at Bea’s love life is enough to keep you on your toes just waiting to see what else she can do to get herself in trouble. This story has mystery, magic, humans, dogs, Pegasus, griffins, betrayal, love triangles and a few other things for good measure. I devoured this book in an evening could not put it down. You will not be disappointed it is well written.

First off, HUGE thank you to the wonderful author, Alex Gordon for gifting me a copy with some wonderful bookmarks and character cards! They came in clutch for sure!

This book came out swinging. The FMC is a badass survivalist, and she looks death in the eye and literally gives it the finger. For real, on lists of favorite FMC’s she’s close to the top of the list

The plot was FANTASTIC in this book. All the twists, and the mystery kept me guessing, and the banter between Ruby and Raiden was scrumptiously DIVINE.

There were tropes I didn’t know I’d love, and tropes I’ve added to my favorites list, including but not limited to: Giants X Humans, possession(read it, I promise you’ll understand) being swept off your feet and on to a Pegasus, The Bachelor X The Hunger Games X Lighter ACOTAR, Unknown crazy magic that becomes unhinged, friends that are actually enemies, Evil ExBF, etc.

I did NOT suspect the ending of this book and my Jaw was ON THE FLOOR. But thankfully, no cliffhanger, so that was nice; but I’ve been trying to convince the author this would make an excellent series and I think there’s lots more story to tell! What a great refreshing read! It’s SO UNIQUE, and so different, nothing really compares!

The spice was scrumptiously fantastic, and so were the men. There wasn’t a single one of the First-Born Sons I could hate. I have my favorites, but they’re all fantastic and so different from each other, but I love the Captain Jack Sparrow Vibe I get from Trent.

If you’re looking for a great read that you will lose sleep over, this is it. I’m so impressed with this one, and I’ll be thinking about it for a while!

A Deadly Game of Dating. Choose One. FEE. FIE. FOE. FUM.

Right off the bat, this book ticks a few boxes for me:
- Takes place in Alaska (Yes, I am weirdly interested in books featuring Alaska or Antarctica).
- Romantasy.
- Fairytale retelling (Jack and the Beanstalk).
- Post-apocalyptic.
Sounds perfect, right?

Our main character is Ruby (Bea). She and a group of family and friends (found family) are trying to survive in post-apocalyptic Alaska. One day, while she is out scavenging, she happens upon a mysterious staircase and a stranger hiding within, the giant Raiden.

According to Bea, Raiden kidnaps her and takes her to his realm. There she is informed of an ancient prophecy that the giants believe relates to her.

Here is where Bea's mistakes start to happen. She drinks too much and signs a contract in blood, without reading it thoroughly. In summary, she agrees to marry a First-Born son of nobility and in exchange, her family will be provided with refuge within the realm. However, if she does not adhere to the terms of the contract, she will die.

Bea must convince her family to move to the realm. She must survive assassination attempts. And she cannot disclose the prophecy to anyone.

From here, we go on an exciting adventure, exploring the giants' realm, trying to fulfill the prophecy, and managing to stay alive in order to accomplish same.

The world-building in this book is fantastic. This book was hard to put down and I am hoping that a Book 2 is in the works.

I received a gifted copy of this book from Quill and Ink Book Tours. All opinions are my own.

I was fortunate enough to receive an Advanced Reader’s Copy (ARC) of Crimson Jewel by Alex Gordon. I was immediately sucked into the story and connected with the characters from the very first page. I couldn’t bring myself to put it down! Normally, it is hard for me to get into reading, especially fantasy, but Gordon’s storytelling completely won me over. In fact, I’ve now devoured all three of her books! Do yourself a favor and pick up anything she has written; you won’t be disappointed.

Crimson Jewel offers a unique, steamy twist on the classic fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk,” blending two distinct worlds: one rooted in familiar folklore and the other set in a gritty, post-apocalyptic version of Alaska. Gordon does a fantastic job reimagining the tale, crafting four distinct kingdoms—Fee, Fie, Foe, and Fum—each with its own extraordinary qualities that together form the giant’s Fiefdom.

I especially enjoyed how Gordon incorporated recognizable fairy tale elements into a world full of original twists and emotional complexity. This story is a wonderful blend of fantasy and dystopia, with strong themes of romantic tension, sacrifice, loyalty, and survival. It truly took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. At times, I was frustrated with Bea’s choices; at others, I admired her selflessness, especially when she put her own desires aside for the greater good, fighting to ensure a safer, more hopeful future for the people she loves.

This book was a fantastic read, though it does contain some sexually explicit scenes and may not be suitable for younger readers.

To say I have been in a reading slump, would be an understatement. I have had a hard time finding a book that makes me want to stay up until I finished it. And this one hooked me within the first couple chapters. It is a re-imagining of Jack and the Beanstalk (it does a good job giving little references of the original) but with Jack being a "Jill" and all those golden treasures are converted into a different way to make life better for the humans.

Bea and her friends are just trying to survive in an apocalyptic type world in Alaska while avoiding being captured by the "On-Grids" a military type group who seem to be hunting her specifically. In a close run in, Bea finds herself coming across a set of random stairs that enter into the clouds and finds herself and her dog climbing them. Here she is caught by Raiden, a giant who takes her to the capital where she soon finds herself in the midst of a prophecy, prejudices, and a secret past she was kept from.

While there is some sexy time, the main draw is the plot and pull of what Bea's heart wants and her duty to save her friends and the giant race.

Spicy: 1.75/5

MF

Triggers: Kidnapping, attempted murder (multiple times), what could be construed as coercive sex due to a contract (hard to explain without giving anything away)

Crimson Jewel by A. Gordon
A modern version of the beloved, classic fairytale, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” The story begins with Bea having to navigate a dangerous landscape made up of natural predators and the military, in a post-apocalyptic Alaska. While running for her life, with her senses heightened, Bea and her dog, Sid suddenly see a hidden, Obsidian staircase in the deep, dark forest. In search of safety, she jumps onto the steps which leads them to the dangerous land of Giants. The author has filled her fast paced tale with rich descriptions of the landscape in both Alaska and Fiefdom, which will engage readers.

The action packed story contains romance and conflict as Bea is forced to make choices to ensure the safety of herself, her family and friends. The author weaves a story where a young woman is forced to make a pact with magical beings, with little knowledge, using her own wits. She finds herself in a land where a prophecy has to be fulfilled, by marrying one of the Realm’s First-Born sons. These dangerous princes, will try to seduce her with their beauty and charm to win her hand. A. Gordon has created a world that will captive readers and is a book that is hard to put down.

Crimson Jewel is the kind of book that grabs you by the collar, kisses you breathless, then shoves you off a cliff—just to catch you again with a wink.

Our heroine? Pure chaos in the best way. She’s clever, reckless, wildly capable, and utterly addictive to read. Trouble follows her like a shadow, and she charges straight into it with blades flashing and sass to spare. Think: if Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk was a knife-wielding vixen who seduced danger instead of running from it.

And the romance? Buckle up. We’ve got one broody love interest who speaks in smoldering glares, plus a full bouquet of dangerously attractive bachelors circling like moths to flame. It’s a delicious mess of longing, banter, and "he better not—but god, I hope he does." 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Spice levels? Through the enchanted beanstalk roof.

The world is lush and original, with a fairytale feel that never feels recycled. Magic, mischief, and high-stakes desire blend seamlessly in this standalone gem. I laughed, I blushed, I yelled at the pages—and I loved every minute.

If you like your heroines sharp, your love interests complicated, and your fantasy with a side of steam and chaos, Crimson Jewel is the book you didn’t know you were waiting for.

Preface: This review is my opinion only. Yours may be different. Neither is wrong and that's ok.

This is the first book I've read by this author (and also her first published I believe), but it will definitely not be the last!

I have only given the book 4 stars, because there were a few bits that just irritated me - there were quite a lot of information that was repeated several times in only a few pages and it felt like either the author thought the reader was stupid and wouldn't remember, or it was intentional padding - either way, it brought me 'out of the book' every time.

Other than that, all the characters were different from each other, had their own foibles, and were entertaining and great to read about.

As someone who reads a lot of fantasy/paranormal romance books, giants were new to me and it was interesting the read the correlation with human stories about them,

The story itself was great, and other than the times I was taken 'out of the book', I just could not put it down, and at 520 pages it was a good length for this genre.

With regards to the smexy scenes, they were very well done, each male had his own kinks, and none of them felt rinse/repeated. On the chilli scale, I give is 2½ chillis.
