They say the heart wants what it wants, but what if what it wants is trying to kill you?
Mysterious and strangely seductive, Ash is more than the man of my dreams, he’s the man of my nightmares…
We were brought together in the throws of killing the killers, our bond was stronger than the secrets and lies that had kept us apart, and I was certain this was the start of something real.
Our deep connection is put to the test when I’m presented with a way out: play the game and win it. But I know it’s not a game. If Ash and I don’t defeat the men from the farmhouse, taking them out one by one in a calculated killing spree, my sister will be put to death in the most gruesome way imaginable. They have to be stopped and I will stop at nothing to do just that.
But I’m being followed. Her name is Detective Sarah Voss. And she’s the one person I can’t kill.
Time is running out. Ash and I must save my sister by going back to where it all began, dogging the police at every turn, before it’s too late. This is a game we must win to stay alive. We must kill to win.
As with the previous book 'Hidden' this is a difficult and emotional read, actually this one is even more so and its not a typical read for me, as I said in my review of 'Hidden' I read romance and as a rule I try to avoid anything with a difficult subject matter and it doesn't come much more difficult than child abuse. Again I'm not going to give a summary of this book since I would find it difficult to do so without inadvertently giving something away and this book is best approached with no spoilers or hints. I hate cliffhangers, I moan about them all the time although to be precise I hate unannounced surprise cliffhangers, in the case of this book, and the previous one I knew before I started reading it was a trilogy so a cliffhanger is to be expected and again this one like the last is one you can't walk away from, so again my advice is don't start this series if you're not intending to read all three because I know I couldn't stop now. Personally I've struggled with this book, everyone looks for something different I know, I like a romantic escape and the illusion that all is well in the world and while I felt drawn to this book and I've been captivated by it I don't think after 'Heroes' that I'll be reading this author again, certainly not for a while and probably not unless her writing takes on a softer more romantic style, that's not to say this isn't a great read but I finished this book around 1am this morning, I just couldn't put it down but then I was awake a good portion of the night thinking about children who live with abuse on a daily basis and it's too much for me so I'm hopefully going to start and finish 'Heroes' today and then at least start a lovely romantic read before bed.
This book was okay. It's part 2 of 3. Honestly though, I don't think I'm going to read the conclusion. I had a really hard time staying interested and getting to the end. It ends on a cliffhanger and unfortunately I just don't think I'm invested enough to find out what happens.
I like Ash a lot, but Hunter is too unpredictable. Her inner dialogue is boring and repetitive. There are more typos in this one than the first and its distracting. Hunter is going after her dad and is also going to try and save her sister Blair. Ash is trying to help, but it's hard when he can't trust Hunter to think logically and not jump the gun so to speak. She's dangerous. We find out who the Detective really is and her relationship to Hunter. We also know there is more to Blair that what Hunter thinks and not everyone wants to be rescued.
Sorry for the bad reivew, but it's honest. But please read other reviews as well because your thoughts may not be the same as mine.
This story is indeed AWESOME! It is full of intrigue, suspense, romance, and murder! Great writing Ms. Lexie Ray. I just bought Heroes, the third book and I will be reading it in 5...4...3...2...1...NOW!
I loved it..... can't wait to get the next book..... once again my only complaint is that they are so short it Lexington does a wonderful job of building the anticipation for the follow up.
This series was definitely getting better for me after this book. It was worse as far as editing. I really want to know if these people are going to take out the evil farm and if, with her knowledge of her mothers love, Hunter will be able to get some peace in her poor, tortured soul.
