Physicist Scarlett Stone is the daughter of the most notorious Russian spy in FBI history. With her father dying in prison, time is running out. Using a false identity, she gains access to the Russian ambassador's Christmas party, searching for evidence to prove her father's innocence.
Former Navy SEAL, now FBI Special Agent, Matt Lazlo, is instantly attracted to Scarlett but when he discovers she lied to him about her identity, he hunts her down with the ruthless efficiency he usually reserves for serial killers.
Not only does Scarlett's scheme fail, it puts her in the sights of people who reward unwanted curiosity with brutality. The FBI—and Matt—aren't thrilled with her, either. As the agents involved in her father's investigation start dying, and the attempts to stop Scarlett intensify, Matt and his colleagues begin to wonder. Could they have a traitor in their midst?

Best known for her Cold Justice® books perhaps it’s not surprising to discover Toni lives in one of the most extreme climates on earth--Manitoba, Canada. Formerly a Marine Biologist, she still misses the ocean.
In January 2016, she visited FBI Headquarters in Washington DC, including a tour of the Strategic Information and Operations Center.
This is the third book in the Cold Justice Series. When Scarlott Stone came up with her plan to uncover the truth about her father by bugging the Russian Ambassador's home office, she really didn't think through the what if's. The opportunity presented itself too quickly to do much planning at all. Which is why she was seen on video by both the Russians and the FBI after her aborted attempt, aborted because she discovered a bug was already in the desk lamp she had selected. Special Agent Matt Lazlo, a former SEAL, was assigned to attend a holiday party at the Russian Ambassador's residence by his boss, Lincoln Frazer. Matt is mingling when he meets a Congressman's daughters who are attending in their parent's stead. Later that night, Matt is called into the Tactical Operations Center where he watches the woman he met earlier unscrew the bottom of a lamp in the Ambassador's office. Only she isn't the congressman's daughter, Sarah. She is instead the daughter of a former FBI agent who was convicted and incarcerated for treason eighteen years earlier. This is another great book in the Cold Justice series. It brings in all the elements that make up a riveting romantic suspense. It also revolves around the FBI's BAU-4 and includes characters featured in previous books. I can't wait to read book 4. I am really enjoying this series.
Quick summary Scarlett Stone sees a chance to gather evidence to prove her father's innocence and seizes the opportunity (he was convicted 14 years ago of being a spy for the Russians). Trouble is she stepped (clumsily) right into the middle of some serious political intrigue involving the Russian ambassador and the FBI. Special Agent Matt Lazlo had no idea the charming woman he flirted with at a Christmas party would turn out to be major trouble.
What I enjoyed I like that Scarlett's nerdy smart and doesn't get her allure. She and Matt had a strong attraction before everything became a hot mess and they had to start all over again, making for a more interesting romance. The Russians were pretty scary, ruthless and had the upper hand for most of the story, creating lots of anxiety, anguish and thrills. Scarlett's belief in her father's innocence wasn't even close to being shared by Matt and the rest of his FBI colleagues and their gradual change in perspective was paced and presented perfectly. Alex Parker and Mallory Rooney (from the first book) play important roles in this story and that's a really good thing considering his murky past and skills.
The bottom line The political intrigue is in the FBI's back yard this time, which is always a huge draw for me. The tension is off the charts, the suspense palatable and the spy mystery rivaled Watergate's Deep Throat. The story had all the right elements to keep things interesting and anxiety-filled. And, it had one of those surprise twists at the end that I always love to see. Still loving this series.
Cold Light Of Day by Toni Anderson is book 3 in the Cold Justice series and like I've said before they get better and better and more exciting with each book, this series gets stronger with each book and you have this need to plough through it until the end. The character's are easy to love and the story line is easy to follow,it nice we see past characters from the other books too and each book is a few weeks from the last devastation so it picks up nicely. There's plenty of thrilling cat and mouse action and a great HEA (did I mention this series is a romantic thriller series so there's some steamy moments too 😉) I definitely recommend this 📖
Another exciting read from Toni Anderson in this series based around the FBI's BAU. This installment has a daughter trying to prove her father was wrongly imprisoned and labeled a spy 14 years ago by the FBI. Her attempt to bug the Russian Ambassador sets the true spies on a deadly path to remain unknown. An interesting and hot match up between brilliant physicist, Scarlett Stone and exNavy SEAL turned FBI analyst, Matt Lazlo.
This is an installment that can be read as a stand alone, but the whole series is really great and worth your time. The romance is hot and the plot keeps moving at an ever increasing pace with a good plot twist at the end.
This was my favorite book of the series so far! This author has such a fun way of pulling intrigue, suspense, messed-up-ness, and romance together and it really works for me. I was glued to these pages, hurriedly flipping to find out what the heck was gonna happen next. Each event had me baffled, wondering who was really in control of things. Read it and you'll see. It's messed up.
Scarlett's life was turned upside down when her father, an esteemed FBI agent, was accused and convicted of being a Russian spy. Believing in his innocence, she was determined to find evidence and clear his name. She didn't really think her plan through, trying to do more than she was capable of, putting her right in the crosshairs of the very people who perpetuated the conspiracy in the first place.
Thankfully, despite being deceived by her in the beginning, Matt became the hero that she needed. He had the skills and the resources to get things done, helping her dodge bullets and bombs in the process.
I loved this story and if I were to complain about anything, it would be the lack of a happy ending. This author hasn't given me one yet, but I'm satisfied (for now) with the way the story ends. Happy-for-nows aren't the best, but they're definitely better than the alternative.
This series will be seeing me again and I'll be back with my thoughts on book four!
Fourteen years ago, Scarlett Stone's father was convicted of betraying his country as a Russian spy and sentenced to prison. No one believed him to be innocent except his wife & daughter. Scarlett is on a mission to prove her father's innocence and inadvertently stirs up an international, political hornet's nest in the process - and also disrupts an FBI undercover operation. She is now the target of some very ruthless, scary villains who will do whatever it takes to silence her. Former SEAL, FBI agent Matt Lazlo steps in and saves Scarlett's life more than once. As danger closes in, Matt & Scarlett go into hiding and sparks fly between them.
Scarlett is a spunky heroine . . . one that's a little nerdy & unsure of herself socially. Her devotion to her father & family is touching as is her determination to reveal the truth. Matt is a "protector" - a sexy ex-SEAL who would die for his family and country. He's not happy with Scarlett's plan to sacrifice herself in an effort to lure the villain out - and he's not happy about being so d*mn attracted to this irritating woman.
Cold Light of Day is an intense, action-packed read with just the right mix of sexy banter, romance, and suspense. I enjoyed seeing FBI agents from previous books take part in this story. The twists & turns kept me guessing until the shocker reveal near the end. Another great addition to the Cold Justice series! A Must Read!
The third book in Toni Anderson's Cold Justice series. Scarlett Stone's father is in prison for being a Russian spy but she is positive he was set up and now he has cancer. Scarlett is determined to find proof her father is innocent and an opportunity arrives with the invitation to a party. Only things go wrong and FBI Agent, and former Navy SEAL, Matt Lazlo saves her life and must keep her from sacrificing herself for those she loves.
Excellent continuation of the series. Fast-paced and entertaining! I was surprised at the end and didn't guess the baddie(s). This was one of those books that I found hard to put down. I just wanted to keep reading. I would highly recommend this series to Romantic Suspense fans! Toni Anderson is rising in the ranks of my favorite authors!
Dull & Boring I didn't find any typos etc. in my copy. I read some reviews from 2016 that said they were in their copy. So, either I missed them or the author updated the book and they no longer exist in the eBooks.
One of my reasons for giving this 3 stars is the mc's. Both Scarlett and Matt were boring. I didn't hate them or anything like that. There were a couple of redeeming qualities to both of them, but mostly they were tedious and tiresome. Scarlett mostly apologized and cried. Matt was so deep in denial and uptight I wanted to smack him.
My next problem is it seemed like everyone but Scarlett & Matt were doing something. They mostly just ran around hiding. So much so I was reminded of the old children's song 'Where is Thumbkin?'.
The excessively repetitive thoughts and actions of both Scarlett & Matt drove me nuts. The plot was good. At points the suspense and mystery were well written. But every time it started to get interesting it would quickly descend back to dull and boring.
As far as the romance, there really isn't much there. It, like the main characters, had very little intensity or passion. There is just enough of one scene to make this 'Adult', but barely.
I'm unsure if I will continue this series. I want intensity, suspense and passion in my books. I want them to demand my attention.
The first 2 books got me caught up in this series. This one poisoned it & I don't know if there is a vaccine.
📕🎵3/18/19 After careful consideration, I have decided to continue with the series. I liked the 1st 2 books very much & I'm not going to let one negative experience keep me from continuing the series.
“Cold Light of Day” is foremost an action/drama with a side of romance between scenes, one that captured my interest the moment I opened the first page. Each book features new characters as well as some from the previous books. Although book # 3 could be read on its own it wouldn’t be a bad idea to read the 2 previous ones.
What happens when the daughter tries to gain access to the Russian embassy to plant a bug in the ambassador’s office and her scheme fails? What happens when an FBI agent falls for the daughter of the most notorious spy in US history? Answer: We have one of those riveting romantic story hard to put down. This drama has all the right although light elements to keep things interesting and lively. Smoothly written this is a story easy to follow even with the cat and mouse game being played out. A daughter trying to prove her father is wrongly imprisoned, a man labelled a spy, and the path she takes to find the true spies. What’s not to be captivated with when a handsome FBI Agent ex-Navy Seal jumps in the fray. Awe!!! We have just the right mix of sexy banter, romance and most of all suspense. The characters are good: Scarlett is a spunky heroine and Matt a striking man in uniform. We have a lot of great dialogue through the entire story and a nicely written sex scene....
I will steal a line from a reviewer (Diane) “Never cross a Russian” if you do you will make a hell of a good story.....
“Cold Light of Day” is a must read and earns a 5 star from me.
Honestly, I rather enjoyed this one and was originally going for three stars, but Ms. Anderson doesn't know the difference between 'poured' and 'pored', and brutal as you may call me for this, that's where the one star goes.
Words of caution: Never cross a Russian! A Christmas party at the Russian Embassy in Washington, DC turns out to be not a good idea to attend especially if you had planned on putting an electronic listening device in the main office!
The big question then is, who is the real traitor?
A pretty good read, fast paced, twists and turns, a TSTL moment, and one very hot scene.
These books keep getting better and better! I was a wreck! The best kind of read when it is an edge-of-your seat page turner. And, add in a little romance and I am in heaven. Yep, great read!
This was the perfect fit to this box set. Not only do we see a fresh new couple and all the things they get in to, to save the one you’re trying to protect. But we get to see some of our old favorites, Alex and Mallory! Yay.
Now FBI Special Agent Matt Lazlo bumps in to a pretty lady literally. He wants to see more of her. But it wasn’t meant to be… Or was it? Scarlett Stone is on a mission free her father from all charges before he passes. So she has a plan only the plan doesn’t go as planned.. Does it ever? I can tell you I will not look at a screw driver the same again lol. That was pretty epic.
This book is full of surprises. You always guessing and wanting to know who? What? And why I kind of like how bold Scarlett is even when she is scared out of her mind. She goes after what she wants. But Matt is more cautions, you can’t blame him for that but it was nice to see that him give in.
Here is a line I love and can’t get out of my head. “A rubber stamped goat f*ck”
Yeah I really enjoyed this box set and the narrator. Wow blew me away, I loved his voice and how you just feel a part of the story because of him. Yeah worth the money the credit worth it all
WOW! If you think the Cold War has ended, think again. Cold Light of Day treats us to a game of cat and mouse, American - Russian style and is as taunt a thriller as anything Tom Clancy has ever written.
The daughter of a notorious Russian spy, Scarlett Stone is determined to prove her father's innocence. To that end, she infiltrates the Russian embassy to plant a listening device in the ambassador's office unwittingly interfering with an FBI investigation. Targeted by both the Russians and the FBI, Scarlett finds herself relying on former Navy SEAL and current FBI profiler Matt Lazlo to keep her safe. But as the net tightens, Scarlett and Matt suspect a traitor in their midst.
An exciting suspense plot and an enjoyable romance even though the heroine is somewhat TSTL.
The Russian traitor angle is compelling and called to mind the case of Robert Hanssen with a twist, i.e., Scarlett's father is innocent. Although the Russians are the obvious villains, and their actions are disgusting, the primary mystery revolves around the identity of the FBI mole. This element is well-written and keeps the reader guessing.
One troubling aspect, however, is the unnecessary inclusion of the , which adds nothing to either plot or characterization as .
In terms of the romance, Matt and Scarlett have great chemistry, especially during their initial interactions. Their reactions to one another after Scarlett's true identity is revealed are realistic and believable. The inlcusion of cameo roles by Alex Parker and Mallory Rooney from book #1 is an added bonus.
Plenty of espionage makes up this latest in the Cold Justice series. Each of these book are so full of acts of betrayal and death not only from who you’d consider bad guys – in this book it’s the Russians – but also from our own government in some form. I love the way the author sets it up at the beginning where we know clearly who some of the bad guys are but yet takes us through many twist and turns before we find out who all the players are.
The story starts with a daughter trying to prove that her exFBI father was not a traitor to his country by being a Russian spy. Scarlett knew her father could never have done all the horrible things he was accused of 14 years ago. Now that he’s dying of cancer in prison she wants to try and prove he didn’t do it. Problem is Scarlett is a Physicist not a spy and ends up getting herself caught which not only puts her life in danger but also opens up a huge can of worms that has far reaching consequences.
All of the previous FBI agents we’ve met over the course of this series are back with Agent Matt Lazlo being the one that takes it upon his self to keep Scarlett out of danger. These two were really opposites but the attraction was there from the start and worked well. At the end of each of these books my longing for getting FBI ASAC Lincoln Frazer’s books increases. Hopefully the author will put me out of my misery soon.
I’ve read almost every book in this series and for whatever reason hadn’t bothered with Cold Light of Day. I have to say, I liked it a lot.
I liked Matt and Scarlett together. I loved the world I was immersed in, which was obvious since I love Toni’s work. I loved the spy plot, the angst, but there was something missing. I couldn’t tell you what. Maybe i wanted something MORE between Scar and Matt? Maybe I expected it to be more intense? This could also be because I read this after a very intense hero who was very vocal and gave no fucks. Who knows.
Apart from that, I thought I knew who the bad guy was but Toni switched it up on me. That was interesting. However, I did notice some plot holes, like what about the photos about one of the bad guys? How and why did Angel’s dad talk to said bad guy? One thing I’ll commend Toni for is that I always feel for the bad guy. I know he doesn’t deserve happiness or to get away with the crap he’s done, but reading their POV always makes me feel some type of way.
I really liked this one. Fast, adrenalin filled; and full of crosses and double crosses between spies and the FBI...and within the ranks of the FBI itself. ''Cold Justice'' is such a great RS series.
I can't believe more RS readers haven't discovered this author/series yet; as well as Laura Griffins also excellent ''Tracers'' series. Both are great, and I would heartily recommend both series to readers who like RS with a slant towards FBI agents.
Cold Light of Day was a fantastic read featuring a romance between an FBI agent and the daughter of one of the FBI's most notorious spies.
As a child, physicist Scarlett Stone's father was arrested as a spy for the Russians while working for the FBI. Now her imprisoned father is dying and time is running out to clear his name. Using a false identity, Scarlett gains access to the Russian ambassador's Christmas party and searches for evidence to prove her father's innocence. FBI Special Agent Matt Lazlo is immediately attracted to Scarlett but after learning she lied about who she was, he hunts her down to get answers. After Scarlett's plan fails, she discovers she has put herself in the crosshairs of the very people who framed her father. With someone determined to put a stop to Scarlett's investigation, she finds herself on the run with Matt after repeated attempts on her life. And as agents involved in her father's case begin turning up dead, Matt and his colleagues begin to wonder if Scarlett may be right about her father after all.
Scarlett has spent her entire life believing in her father's innocence even after he confessed to being a spy. She has spent countless hours trying to prove his innocence but with her father now dying, her time has almost run out. Scarlett normally isn't one to do anything reckless but to save her father, she's willing to do anything. I admired her loyalty and absolute belief in her father. Prior to joining the FBI, Matt was a Navy SEAL. He now works as an analyst in the BAU, working to bring down serial killers. His involvement in Scarlett's case is definitely a departure from his other work with the FBI but his skills translate well.
Scarlett and Matt's relationship gets off to a bumpy start as she lies about her identity when she first meets him. They're both instantly attracted to one another but due to the reason Scarlett is at the party, they cannot act on that attraction. Once the FBI knows about Scarlett's activities, Matt is the one sent to go find her which definitely sours things between them at first. Once the pair are on the run and she's able to convince him of her side of the story, they slowly allow themselves to give in to their attraction. I enjoyed the build up in their romance and the slowness definitely pays off once they get together. They have great chemistry and the steamy scenes are very well done. I liked that there wasn't a ton of unnecessary drama between them and overall really enjoyed their romance.
The investigation into Scarlett's father made for a very interesting plot. Due to the fact he was convicted almost fifteen years ago, a lot of the people involved in the case are now fairly high up in the FBI. This means when Matt's boss and coworkers begin digging into the case, they have to be careful how they go about it so they don't alert those involved. The attacks on Scarlett's life added just the right amount of tension and suspense to the story. Ultimately I ended up being surprised by who was involved as I suspected someone else. The ending is well done with the final confrontation with the bad guy having the perfect amount of action.
Overall Cold Light of Day was a a great read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Cold Fear, soon.
I grabbed this book because the daughter of a spy and a fed sounded awesome!
So Scarlett’s father was an FBI agent who has been imprisoned for treason. It’s been over a decade, but Scarlett knows she can prove her father’s innocence. Her best friend Angel is the daughter of a senator, so when she’s invited to a Christmas party at the Russian ambassador’s house, Scarlett tags along. But her ulterior motives are to bug the ambassador’s office and catch him saying something incriminating. This does not end well. Turns out someone else is already bugging him.
She meets a hot fed at the party and they definitely connected, but she’s lied to him. She’s pretending to be her friend’s sister, so she knows nothing can come of it. Until he comes after her…to arrest her. She’s been caught on camera, but if the FBI acknowledges they know, then they’re letting the Russians know they’re spying on their ambassador. But they don’t want to release her with a target on her back either. In the mean time, Angel has been kidnapped and when the offer is made to trade herself for her friend, she’s almost killed. So former Navy SEAL and current FBI Agent Matt Lazlo takes bodyguard duty.
They go on the run, and I love how Scarlett is very understanding of the fact the Matt knows what he’s doing and he’ll keep her safe. She follows his directions and doesn’t go running off and do anything stupid. I really appreciated that fact. I felt like we got way too much time in someone’s head that we didn’t need. I didn’t want that, nor did I enjoy the actions that followed. I also feel like we got very little background on Matt. I don’t know if it’s from a previous book or not, but I didn’t get that vibe. I just think we don’t know. We get a lot about his mom, but I wanted to know why he was being weird about his time in the Navy.
Scarlett is incredibly naive. Like borderline stupid for a genius. She genuinely believes she can just apologize and beg forgiveness. Of a man she believes framed her father and has shot at her. I just…didn’t get that. That was pretty much my main issue with this book. Once she realized what she was up against, she smartened up…however I feel it took until dang near the end for it to really sink in that she couldn’t just beg forgiveness of the Russian ambassador.
That being said, the suspense is fantastic, the teamwork of Matt and I’m assuming previous characters was so exciting-I loved seeing the different types of characters coming together. And I will definitely continue on with this series.
4.5 stars I’m not generally a huge fan of the romantic suspense genre, but this series just works for me! The Cold Justice series by Toni Anderson is one of my favorites! Cold Light of Day, the third book in the series, is primarily focused on a captivating, suspenseful FBI-type thriller plot, as are all in this series. It has a side element of romance interwoven throughout the story, which is sweet and swoon-worthy, though a bit masculine dominant, and it is ultra light on any graphic content.
In this story we follow physicist Scarlett Stone, daughter of the notorious former FBI agent turned Russian spy who currently resides in prison, but not for long, if his health is any indication. Scarlett earnestly believes that her father is innocent and it’s her life’s mission to clear his name. When she takes it upon herself to listen in on the Russian ambassador’s private conversations in order to instigate her father’s freedom, things rapidly fall apart and the situation soon becomes deadly.
Admittedly, it was a stupid, naive move to think an amateur could waltz into the Russian embassy and bug the inner sanctum, but what follows is a fast-paced, action-packed, highly entertaining story anyway. We have romance, friendship, interesting backstories on the characters and constant page-turning tension. I wasn’t entirely a fan of the male protagonist who seemed a bit heavy-handed and domineering to me, but overall, this is an engrossing, gripping, quick story and series, and one I can’t wait to carry-on with.
“Cold Light of Day” is a story of loyalty to friends, self-confidence, justice, corrupt politics, betrayal, manipulation, and a daughter’s love for her father. Toni Anderson’s readers see her pull out all the stops as she writes the story of scientist Scarlet Stone seeking to prove her father’s innocence for a crime he did not commit. Twenty years earlier her father was tried and convicted for being a Russian spy.
Each of Anderson’s Cold Justice series features new protagonists in each new story “Cold Light of Day – Book 3”, as well as working characters from earlier books in her story. In “Cold Light of Day” readers meet new protagonists, Scarlet Stone and FBI Agent Matt Lazio, who meet at a Christmas Party at the Russian Embassy. Lazio is attending in the place of his boss and Scarlet is attending with her best friend April LeMay, pretending to be LeMay’s sister.
Scarlet has another reason for attending the embassy party. Scarlet wants to plant a bug in the Russian Ambassadors office. She was hoping to record the Russian Ambassador saying something incriminating that will help her prove her father’s innocence before he dies of cancer. While attempting to plant a bug she discovers someone else’s bug and does not know she has been filmed by both the FBI and the Embassy surveillance cameras.
Soon after Scarlet is caught on tape in the Russian Ambassador’s office her friend April is kidnapped and powerful people start hunting Scarlet to stop her pursuit of her father’s innocence. Agent Lazio pursues Scarlet at first because he thinks she is a criminal and after saving her life twice begins to listen to what Scarlet is saying about her father being framed. If Scarlet’s father is innocent, Lazio and his boss need to find the traitor among them.
The story unfolds with the return of Agent Roony and Alex Parker to help find the traitor. As their investigation continues, someone is murdering those involved in convicting Scarlet’s father. It seems someone wants to stop Scarlet’s efforts to prove her father’s innocence. After attempts on Scarlet’s life, Lazio is sure the Russian ambassador is working with other powerful people trying stop the investigation.
“Cold Light of Day” transitions back and forth between Scarlet and the FBI’s activities and the activity of those hunting them. The fast moving story unfolds with suspense and thrills at every turn. Anderson creates intense moments in her mystery romance. Readers are kept in the dark about who the real spy is and how he went undetected for almost two decades.
Readers embrace the growth in Anderson’s characters and the romance between Agent Matt Lazio and Scarlet Stone. You will have to follow the leads and clues Scarlet’s father put in his notes to find out how this mystery is solved. The story is one of Anderson’s best and “Cold Light of Day” is a must read and earns a 5 star ranking
