Angel in a Book Shop

Rate this book
What happens when a broken man has to trust in the impossible?

Chapter One is an antique book shop and is the last tangible thing Joshua Blakeman and his mom have left of his father. Nestled in a quiet square a few steps from London's St Paul’s Cathedral, it is boarded up with whitewashed windows and no new stock. The place is a sad reminder of loss and it has to go, but destroying a business that has been in his family for generations is not a role Josh is looking forward to.

Michael is the owner of Arts Desire, the shop next door. With his rainbow pride mugs and his sunny outlook, he is the complete opposite of what Josh thinks he needs in his life.

But, when Josh and Michael become friends, Josh learns that finding true love starts with making big decisions—and that everyone deserves their own Christmas miracle sometimes.

Every day I love him more.

Do you believe in angels?

I don't. But I believed in Michael. And Josh.

I believed in THEIR love.

And in LOVE, period.

This was a heartwarming, beautiful tale about a man done in by life and lies who discovers that maybe dreams and promises are not just for the lucky and fearless.

Josh is lost when Michael finds him. But together, over coffee and shared lunches and stolen kisses, they find each other.

I loved the bookstore setting, the talk of old London, the hope of forever.

Ah, what a gorgeous story this was, a shimmery fantasy: no steam but so much tenderness and romance. And kissing!

You don't have to believe in angels. Just breathe for a minute...and FEEL.

It's not you book, it's all me.

I was so excited to read this... I think I got so worked up for it to be great that it couldn't live up to my expectations. My experience is summed up thusly:

description

I'm still going with 3 stars because I thought it was well written and I know a lot of people will love it. Guy in a bookstore meets an angel? Lots of hearts will be warmed by this one - just not the cold, cynical heart that gives the occasional beat in my chest.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. I loved Josh as a character, he was well fleshed out and I felt sorry for him, he'd had some awful stuff thrown at him in a very short time, no wonder he had a mini breakdown of sorts. Michael, on the other hand...I just couldn't get into him, he didn't seem credible and I'm sure that if Josh had been more aware and less wrapped up in his perceived failings, he'd have noticed that 'things' just seemed to happen when Michael was around.

I loved the tone of the story though and Josh's mum...so glad she found another Mr Right.

This was another really nice story from RJ. I've read most of her books and I always enjoy reading what she writes and this was no different.

It was different in the sense it was a bit more fantasy/paranomalish. But that wasn't a bad thing. I really liked it here.

I'm really glad I read this. Michael and Josh were sweet and the ending made me smile.

***** This is a delight ! *****
A short story romance near London, with a heavenly twist. Every other chapter is an entry in Michael's diary. He owns the Art shop next to Joshua's inherited book shop, called Chapter One. It had been his Dad's.

Now, a year later sad Joshua must settle the fate of the shop. We get to see his past and inner thoughts. Each man likes the other and the kisses are magnificent. It's a slow burn, and we watch them progress from strangers to much more.
The big reveal is priceless, soul shaking
and marvelous, too !
R.J. Scott leaves us thrilled once again.
ENJOY !

Original Blog Post: Happy Happy Release Day!!! eARC Review: Angel In A Book Shop by RJ Scott

I don't really know what to say about this Christmas story from RJ Scott. I cannot call it sweet, but it is. I cannot call it heartwarming, but it surely is. I cannot call it a heart wrenching romance either. But. It. Is.

In short: This is a Scott book I cannot seem to get off my mind. I keep thinking about it and its been days since I read this. I mean... Look at that cover. It's a bookshop filled with shelves groaning from the weight of books. If that is not enough to send me to heaven (I just love book shops, don't you?) there are the two men: Joshua and Michael. The glasses, I have a weak-on-the-knees reaction every time I look up and see the glasses. The shop and glasses combination sent me to dreamland first time I got a peek of that cover. As for the read itself? Let's just say this: Angel In A Bookshop is an incredibly touching story about how the loss of hope and faith can be found once again with the right person beside you.

We have Josh who lost it all because of a mistake. He trusted the wrong person and he not only loses his credibility and his job, he also managed to lose something his mother trusted him with. His fight to survive the aftershock of that betrayal nearly crippled him but he persevered. This fight is extended to Chapter One, his father's book shop. Josh now has to make a decision to either sell out or not. First, he must sort through his father's shop and find out what he could do to make it presentable. In the process, he discovers this shop meant a lot to more people than Josh knew about and the books! Wow, the books are not just run of the mill, commercially published books. The shop sold rare books and clients patiently waited for word. Josh has to do this now and realizes, he may just need more coffee.

Michael is the shop-owner next door. He is Josh's savior: he brought with him the perfect cup of coffee. As the two men get to know each other and become friends, we readers come to realize that Michael is not really who or what he seems to be. Yes, he was the coffee-bearing-angel but is he really just that?

This is the story of Josh and Michael who find each other and find 'the one' who will stick it out with them for the rest of their days, through thick and thin, through illness and in health. But it is also the story of Josh's mother who lost the love of her life at this time the previous year. Josh finds Michael, and found himself in the process. His mother finds hope as well, and is surprised by it. So yes, this is a Christmas story with secret twists and turns but it does send the message of hope and love. And it works. Beautifully.

You need a perfect holiday story, with angel, miracle, and a happily ever after, like when we're kids?
This Josh and Michael's story, fulfill my need for those kind of fairy tales...just believe it for now (because I believe in angel, and Michael is an angel)... *sigh*

"Still, time marches on so quickly and I am happy to let it pass. Until I find the man who will make me decide that time has to slow down so I can stay. One day I will meet the person who will make me feel. He will be strong and certain and perfect for me, and I will want to ascend to become human just to be with him."

The feeling they felt for each other, was undeniable since they're met.
And coffee, tea, and lunch became Michael's bridge to Josh heart, after losing his Father and betrayed by his evil ex. Michael is like a rain after a long summer for Josh. And the love they share...Oh, so beautiful, that Michael gave up his 'forever' existence just to be his true and forever love, Josh.

“I’ve been looking for you my entire life”

"Why does a person have to go through so much pain before they find their path? I want to help, but that isn’t my role here. I am a friend, and I must remind myself of that each moment I am with him. I can’t touch or take away any of the pain. But for the first time in so many millennia, I have lost track. I want to take away Josh’s pain."

Isn't it beautiful? I'm a hopeless romantic after all.
And if you're a hopeless romantic like me, Angel in a Bookshop is a perfect holiday story for you. For this year, and the next year after, and the next, and the next....

Highly recommended holiday's story.

Short and emotional story, one of Christmas miracles. This is also a story of finding, but more importantly, accepting true love.

This is told in the third person from mostly Josh's POV, with some short chapter introductions from Michael's.
I want to comment of the fantastic 10-years later epilogue from Michael's POV, which I thought was outstanding. Love it!

‘Angel in a Book Shop’ is a truly wonderful, sweet, and heartwarming story about the healing power of love. The fact it takes place in a quaint little antique bookstore and contains a supernatural element are part of its charm, and wonderful additions to a story full of mystery and deep emotions. But for me, the strength of this novella lies in the characters who, each for a different reason, need love and understanding so very badly. Neither of them know what true love is, and both of them learning about it as they go provided me with an adventure of the very best kind.

Joshua has suffered some major blows in his life. He lost his job, for one thing. The details of what happened slowly emerge as the story unfolds, and his shame about what he did is deep enough to make anyone despair. The other blow to his mental and emotional well-being is the loss of his father, which means Joshua is now in charge of deciding what happens to the aptly named “Chapter One” bookstore his father used to run. It has been in the family for generations, and I really enjoyed watching Joshua slowly delve into the books, the customers, and what running an antique bookstore really feels like. Of course, seeing him meet and get to know the owner of next door’s shop, with its artsy collectibles and very different ambiance, was just as much fun.

Michael is a mysterious being. His past history and thoughts, interjected at the beginning of each chapter, read like entries in a diary and gave me a gradually growing understanding of who he is and what is at stake for him now that he has met Josh. On the surface, Michael looks like the total opposite of Josh, but deep down, he is just as lonely and in need of someone to be his one and only as Josh. Michael has some interesting powers, but all of them pale in the face of the decision he has to make. Love can be truly miraculous, and nobody knows that better than Michael.

With two men facing a major decision, wonderful secondary characters, and great emotional depth, this story grabbed my attention and held it through all the ups and downs and multiple twists. The epilogue was one you don’t want to miss! If you like stories about love and miracles, if you enjoy a Christmastime setting with the touch of the supernatural, and if you’re looking for a read that is sweet, deeply emotional, and with the power to make you smile, then you will probably enjoy this novella as much as I did. I loved it!

Christmas reads - oh my heart, Christmas reads. As much part of my essential seasonal package as chocolate, family, hallmark films and Christmas jumpers. There is nothing like a dash of romance and sprinkling of snow in a story to give me the warm and fuzzies - and in a little magic and the fuzzies just get fuzzier.

Angel in a Book Shop is a beautiful winter story. It is the kind of book that gives me a mellow after glow of happiness once I've read it. Joshua is at the lowest possible ebb in his life. The death of his father, betrayal of his boyfriend resulting in the loss of his job and the manipulation of his uncle have left him in a place where he is barely coping with life. The last thing he needs really is to enter the shut up bookshop that had been his dad's life. The desire to stay well away warred with the need to not let it go to rack and ruin and the latter won. Just.

Michael has lived many, many lifetimes. He has met with many, many souls and changed the life direction of those lucky enough to interact with him. He moves on and those he has met before become a blur, another part of one whole that makes up his life. Then he meets Josh - and from the start he knows that this 'job' is different. As well as helping Josh he finds he has his own, life-altering, choices to make.

In RJ Scott's enjoyable style this story unfolds. Choices and actions, decisions and doubts. It's not handed to us readers on a platter, but the silver lining definitely shines in this cloud. I really enjoyed this read, and I think anyone who has a love of Christmas stories will. It's well worth a read.

This was a sweet, romantic, holiday read. Things happened between Josh and Michael a bit too quickly for my liking and I never really felt like I knew either of them particularly well - however they were very cute together. I liked the idea for the story in general though, the little snippets from Michael and the whole element of the book shop. The secondary characters were lacking in any real depth unfortunately, but it is a pretty short story so I hadn't expected them to be. It was an enjoyable little read to sit down with this evening.

A lovely holiday story. Well written, very minor editorial issues, nicely developed main characters, sweet ending. As a rather short story, it left me a little bit frustrated with questions such as... are there others? Still, recommended.

Absolutely precious. This book is full of perfectly sweet aww moments that I loved from beginning to end. And I’ll be honest, angel/demon/religious books are not my thing most of the time, but there are certain authors I make exceptions for. Scott is one of them. And I’m glad I read it. It’s a story of new beginnings, of forgiveness, and of moving on. It’s everything a holiday story should be—heartwarming and sweet with a fulfilling happily ever after. I loved it.

I adore Josh. His struggle is painful. He’s been through a lot and I’m not going to tell you all of it, because it lends a lot to the plot, so read the book to find out. But losing a parent is hard enough. Josh’s father loved him to the end of the world and back and then he was gone. Add to that a crappy ex and questionable job ending, it’s a wonder poor Josh could stand on his own two feet, much less walk from point A to point B. My heart broke for him until well after Michael walked into his life and began healing him without him knowing. Michael—the man with the big secret. I mean you can mostly figure out his secret from the title, but not completely. It’s not all is all I’m saying. I loved Michael, because for a man who is supposed to have it all together—and for the most part he does—Michael is torn when it comes to revealing himself to Josh. It breaks him apart when it comes to what ifs. I felt his pain and wanted so badly for him to find his happy ending.

The structure of this story is quite brilliant. The way it’s set up is that the story is mostly written in Josh’s third person POV, but at the beginning of each chapter there is a first person present tense POV from Michael that sounds more like a journal entry. It turns out that he’s talking to the door. (You’ll understand when you read it.) It’s a lovely way to get inside both characters’ heads.

This is not a simple happy romance. There are a lot of painful emotions that Josh is dealing with. But it is a loving and sweet one.

Josh is struggling with a complicated past that haunts him still. Grieving for his father and putting the shop that has been in his family for over a century. He doesn’t want to be the one to end the family tradition, but he doesn’t feel that he can continue the bookstore.

Michael is special, beautiful and kind, talented and intelligent. He sweeps Josh off his feet with his gentle pursuit and kind support. They are friends first as they become lovers and fall in love.

I loved the relationship between Josh and his mother. Even as they struggled through their grief they were still so supportive and loving with each other.

I enjoyed the small paranormal element. It was interesting and a little different.

A story of healing, hope, family, magic, forgiveness, loss, redemption, choices and possibilities, falling in love and taking chances. A Christmas novella that warms the heart and left me smiling.

I love angel stories. There is something so wonderful about having your own private angel looking out for you that I just gobble these books right up. And having an angel fall in love with you? How perfect is that? I just love these heavenly stories, I really do.

Josh is grieving over the death of his father and takes on the process of clearing out his dad’s book shop. While he reminisces over the time he spent there with his dad at Chapter One, he begins to form an attachment to the place. And an attachment to the handsome art store owner next door, Michael, too. At the same time he is dealing with a greedy uncle looking to profit off his brothers death. What an awful man.

Michael has been around for centuries and has never before fallen for one of his charges, but something about Josh makes him want to be more, be there for him, be with him, and be human. But how do you tell the man you’ve fallen in love with that you are not who he thinks you are?

The love story between Josh and Michael is very sweet and heartfelt. The story is fast paced but well fleshed out, and you have lots of feels for both of these guys. There is no relationship angst or drama (besides the big reveal), but it is packed full of emotions, caring and love between two men who are both yearning for more. And with RJ Scott, you know they are going to get it.

I love this time of year and all of the holiday books that come out. They really help me get into the Holiday spirit. This was my first read this season and I could not have picked a better place to start. Scott fills her books with so much romance and family and hopefulness you can't help but finish with a deep sigh and a smile.

Josh has not had an easy year. If losing his father wasn't hard enough he also lost his job, his home and found out the man he loved had betrayed him. Now living with his mother and trying to come back from a mental breakdown Josh is at a crossroads with his life. The next decisions he makes could take him down some very different paths.

Michael owns the shop next door to Chapter One, the shop that has been in Josh's family for generations. When the two meet they both know there is something special between them. But Michael has secrets and Josh has had enough of them in his life. Trust the handsome stranger who in a short time has come to mean the world, or learn from your past and walk away?

This is a great read that will make you believe in Forever. The author takes the time to build the relationship and it's that trust that is earned over time that leads to the choices both men must make. This book will definitely be added to my Holiday Keeper list!

Such a lovely story as the love of Michael, helps to heal Josh.

Josh had a breakdown after the death of his father and his life was turned upside down. He lost his partner, his home, his job and his mental health deteriorated. He is struggling to get back on his feet but has a mother who loves him dearly and nudges him in the right direction.

I loved seeing Josh establish a bond with Michael, having to trust his own judgment, even when he has been hearing voices. Josh learns to trust his heart and be open to accepting Michael's love.

Maybe Josh accepted Michael with too little question, maybe Michael fell hard for Josh without much reason provided but surely it was destiny and obviously a love that was meant to be.

I enjoyed the hope, the love, the belief and the happy ending. 3.5-4 stars

Angel in a Bookshop was a sweet story about Josh, who is still coming to grips with the death of his father as well as learning to trust himself again after a really bad decision cost him more than just his self respect, and Michael, an angel, for lack of a better word, looking for the other half of his soul.

The story is told mostly from Josh's POV, but there are entries at the beginning of each chapter from Michael to give you insight in his thoughts as well as the life he has experienced up to now. I quite enjoyed those bits.

The cover is gorgeous. And the story, though I didn't really get the whole 'angel' thing, was very sweet. The ending was perfect perfect perfect!
