A quick read , diary style, of an explorer in "Arctic" Africa. I loved the author's tongue-in-cheek humor. I would have liked more about the people and less about big game hunting but there are some amazing stories in here of narrow escapes regarding elephants, lions and rhinos, and when he DID mention the people it was fascinating. Case in point: What the native porters do when given winter clothes. Brilliant!

The scenes of the Fallen Forest are truly spectacular. Moss covered all the fallen trees which were about 30-40 feet tall. The trees were slippery like ice and hard as steel. The trees looked like gnarled monsters, and had moss of every color. As the explorers went farther the trees lost their shape and became rounded blobs of yellow-green, red, white and brown moss.

Loved the last half of the book! But the first half was about too much animal hunting.
