Some say that true evil never dies; it merely lies dormant, awaiting the next opportunity to rise from its dark lair and again visit itself upon humankind.Jack Hunger, a cop in Lee County, Florida, never gave it much thought. He purchased the 20-year-old Pentax K1000 camera at a perfectly respectable thrift store, and it was to be the beginning of a new hobby for the reclusive crime scene photographer. The dismembered body of rookie cop Justin Sims and the bullet-riddled corpse of Russian Mafia killer Sergei Veselov are Jack Hunger’s first subjects. The job seems to be just another brutal day at the office until he develops the photographs taken with his new camera in his home darkroom. As the images of the two corpses appear on the photographic paper, something dark awakens, setting into motion a terrifying chain of events that threatens to shatter the sanity of Jack Hunger and his friend, Sheriff Wayne Olsen. Together, the two men are plunged into an intense race against time, forced to push their own fears and all logic aside. They must stop the darkness in its tracks before it escapes into the shadowy streets of an unsuspecting world.
The Scabs Trilogy in my rearview mirror, and Dead Hunger long finished, I introduce Emma's Rose: The Cave! It's my new ZOMBIE series.
It has been a while since I delved into the zombie world. I really enjoyed writing the Scabs Series, but something was pulling me . Perhaps they were dead arms, peeling and gray, reaching for flesh. My flesh.
As usual my stories are character driven. Emma's Rose is no exception. I hope you enjoy the whole new cast of characters, and the new adventure, along with the new zombies.
A HUGE thanks to all of you who have read any of my work.
Now ... about me.
Eric A. Shelman was born in 1960 in Fort Worth, Texas. He now lives in Cape Coral, Florida with his wife of thirty years, Linda.
Thank you Eric A. Shelman for giving me a reason to sleep with the light on. This story is horrifying, strange, and has lots of "what the hell" creepy moments. There are twists and turns. When I watch horror movies I find myself peeking between my fingers so as not to miss a frame and reading this book left me feeling the same way. I was disgusted and curious to see what would happen next all at the same time.
I'm not going to lie. This was a gory story. Like, blood everywhere. And even though I'm not really into horror, I found this to be a great read. Think Goosebumps on very adult crack. The action was fast and the story was well paced.
I listened to the audio version and I thought Shelman did a pretty good job narrating. The pacing was good, but the voices were a bit similar. Overall, not too bad!
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
Eric A Shelman never disappoints. This book was an intense edge of your seat keep your lights on thriller. I was totally blown away by his storyline. His characters are so real that I feel like I know them. I didn't want the story to end. I will be waiting impatiently for his next book.
yet another fabulous book by eric shelman what a page Turner good story line great characters well worth a read can't wait for the next installment of this series
Story starts with a bang. Rapist surprises and overcome young lady. Man across the road on outing taking pictures with brand new camera. Bad outcome. Camera sold. Almost bad outcome. 20 years later camera bought in resale store. Now all that was the "normal" part. The rest of the book is so intense and unexpected. Twist and turns. A fun ride to the end. If you don't mind a little dark along with a captivating story then try this book.
Audio:This was not what I expected. The story was good, rather original, but gross.Somehow a thrift store camera used for crime photos has black smudges that disappear over time.People are being dismembered. One is a cop. Two cops are charged with finding the cause and stopping more bloodshed. If you like cannibal zombies....this is for you.Mr Shelman is a good narrator.I was provided this book by the author or publisher for a review.
Eric A. Shelman always brings great imagination and uniqueness to his stories. This book is no different. The writing keeps you engaged throughout the story, in a fast paced, action packed horror ride. I have read anything from this author that was disappointing. His stories are always very original and always have a interesting twist or theme. I highly recommend this book for fans of the genre.
Creepy reading at its best! I read this late at night, no lights except my kindle. When I started listening for noises in my house, I turned my bedside light on! A very different twist on the horrors that await you, even just smiling for a camera.💀
This was a horrifically horror filled read, and i read it in less then 2 days . It was hard to put it down .I can guarantee that This is one of those books where you say!!! What is wrong with Eric???? That is some sick twisted s h i t there . LOL.
Jack Hunger buys a camera at a thrift store to use in his job as a crime photographer. Little does he know the history of his latest purchase. It contains the soul of a killer. And the killer’s killer. So Jack is not prepared for what happens when he uses his new camera to photograph the scene of carnage when a mafia butcher named Sergei is taken down after escaping prison. But the butcher is not taken down fast enough and murders a rookie police officer before he himself is killed. So begins a tale of bloodthirst so powerful it may make a cop kill his own.
There is a little bit of zombie, a little bit of Frankenstein, a little bit cannibal, and a little bit of love story all mixed up in this story. I wasn’t quite prepared for all of the horror contained in this book, especially when it happens to children. But I liked it, I liked Jack, I liked the rookie cop, and I liked Hannah.
As usual, Eric Shelman did an excellent job on the narration. He sped up, slowed down, and spoke in just right tone at just the right time. His female voices don’t distract from the listen and his accents are very good. I enjoy listening to him and he has never disappointed!
I received this audiobook for free through Audiobook Boom! in exchange for an honest review.
I was first exposed to Eric A. Shelman as a writer with the first Dead Hunger that I reviewed a couple years ago. This was an audiobook that I did not really care for, even though it was in my preferred genre. So of course I had some hesitation before I began listening to The Camera.
However, I always try to go into a new book with an open mind and as few expectations as possible. I am so glad that I was able to do that and that Shelman was willing to give me another chance to connect with his writing. Because this audiobook is pretty creepy and different. Starts off with a serial killer, for lack of a better term, abducting a woman in the dark morning hours and an amateur photographer. Other than being very stressful to listen to there was nothing that seemed special about this particular camera. It turns out that if the camera photographs a recently dead person, that person will come back to life. Not necessarily as a zombie, but a monster that has an insatiable hunger for flesh and calling to find their killer. That is all I am going to say about that.
Shelman was able to pull me in to his world were the dead walk the earth again. Full of all the violence, blood, gore, humor and disturbing scenes that make a good horror story. Because of this unique story line I am now looking forward to listening to more by Shelman.
These days I am very very weary of listening to an audiobook narrated by the author. Unless you are Neil Gaiman or a professional voice actor I would generally say don’t do it. I am very happy to report that Eric A. Shelman did a very good job with the narration of The Camera. He obviously understands what audiobook listeners are looking for, especially with a horror story. Good characterizations, he went all out while speaking as one of the “monsters”. While he could use some additional polish to make his performances really great. The main negative that I heard, now I could be mistaken. But it sounded like during some of the pauses Shelman was taking a drink off water or something. Because he would pause and when he started speaking again it sounded like there was still something in his though and the tone of his voice changed slightly.
I had read all of The Dead Hunger series by Eric A. Shelman and loved them all so decided to read some of his other books and I must say "not disappointed at all". Shelman gets you right in the story from the get go and the action never lags. His way with words has you able to picture what his characters look like which sometimes isn't a good thing....and yet he can still throw bits of humour and sarcasm into the mix which I enjoy. After reading this book I'm very happy that with the technology nowadays we don't need to develop pics because if I ever had a picture with a flaw I would be terrified. I highly recommend you start reading Eric A. Shelman's books if you're a fan of zombies, horror or anything creepy. I would add, not for the faint of heart though as his descriptions of certain actions are very vivid. Looking forward to his next Dead Hunger book and his other books.
This is not just another zombie story - weird virus/mutated bacterial blah blah blah... Eric takes a full new slant using a hint of mysticism to create a whole different set of rules for this romp through the mortuary, police force and Florida. The tale takes place over a span of more than 40 years and takes in a collection of different people being effected in different ways.
Suffice to say, without writing any spoilers, this is a really good yarn from one of the best authors around, indie or mainstream. Carefully constructed intricate plots, likable real life characters and enough laughs to let you catch your breath.
If you like mysteries, horror or Eric, go buy the book - you wont regret it

**Possible Spoiler**
First, the action started right away, so I was hooked right away!
This wasn't a typical zombie story, which was great. It was gory but also surprisingly light-hearted and funny.
The only thing that was a little weird to me was the prologue. Some of it seemed like it was unrelated to the main story. I usually hate prologues, but actually really liked this one & would have liked a whole book just about the people in it.
The author narrates the audiobook, which I always love because it's delivered in the tone that the author intends.
Okay, so I have delved into the world created by Eric A. Shelman for the first time and now will be trekking deeper.
This little tale is a fun twist on the "zombie" genre. It gives you an actual genesis and patient zero. ES is not afraid to shock the reader, so go into this wearing a cup because he kicks low and will have you cursing him for daring to do so (in a good way).
No spoilers, but this will make you leery of classic cameras. In a short time, there are decently developed characters and a story line that pulls you along begging for you to finish this in one sitting.
Having read all of Eric Shelman's Dead Hunger books as well as several other books he wrote, couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. It grabbed me and pulled me in right from the beginning. I had trouble putting it down and almost screamed in horror when my Kindle battery ran out. I had to patiently wait until it was recharged and I dove right back in. The book is wild and extreme and I loved every minute of it! I'm so glad to see that a sequel is in the works!
gross. gruesome. gory. had to quit eating while reading this book, as the details were that realistic and visual. Holy HELL! There are just not enough words to describe the turns and the twists and the ugh just ugh! Eric you really need to have your mind examined.... wait I guess I do too since I loved this book and can't wait for the next one. Makes me want to toss my old camera :)
