During the Bite-Centennial, the ghouls discover an old scientist's workshop and travel back 200 years to the beginning of Monster High. But when they try to get home, they go through a vortex that fuses some of the ghouls together! With the help of the Hybrids, the new monsters in school, they learn how to control their combined flaws and together face their greatest challenge...saving Frankie!
Monster High: Freaky Fusion The Junior Novel (Updated) A banner on the gates of Monster High show that it’s the B ITE-CENTENNIAL. Two hundred years of ghouls and gargoyles, specters and centaurs, vampires, mummies, zombies, and werewolves all learning together and getting along. On this day, its quiet in the halls, but then all of a sudden… a creature burst through the walls.
A moment later, Frankie pops through the hole and creature left and tries to find it. Frankie trips while running and comes face to face with the creature-who looms above her-. She’s rescued by the school’s new hybrid monster’s Neighthan (whose a cross between a unicorn and a zombie), Sirena (the daughter of a mermaid and a ghost), Bonita Femur, (a skeletal wraith with the wings of a giant moth), and Avia Trotter, (a flying harpy with a centaur’s powerful legs).
Frankie (now in class) starts her presentation and story-a tale about family-. We learn that the new monsters are called Fusions or better yet Freaky Fusions. The story starts at the 200th anniversary of MH. The monsters are about to have a big event-The Hiss tory of Monster High: A Bite-centennial Celebration of Exceptional Acceptance, a Mr. Where Production-. It’s in the hallway Frankie, Lagonna, Cleo, Clawdeen, Draculaura, and Ghoulia see the new kids for the first time. Lagoona fills them in and tells them they’re transfer students and they’re Fusions. She further says she’s heard they’ve been moved around a lot.
Frankie is so busy checking out Neighton that she falls over. He comes over to help her up. Neightan might have made a big impression on Frankie but the other Fusions don’t seem so nice. Avia rudely calls Manny a slime ball when he said he “doesn’t get it”. Are they one or are they the other. Cleo also seems to think they should just choice one thing. They pull Neightan away as he stumbles and tells Frankie goodbye.
The students gives their scaritage reports. Robecca speaks of her father Hexiciah who was a great mechanic and inventor. He taught at MH but went missing thousands of years go. She speaks of the things he invited daily in the catacombs. She shows them a box whose pupose is unknown but she’s kept in remembrance of him.
Frankie gives a half-prepared report. She only says her grandfather’s name was Victor, he created her father, and he might have went to school there. She has some blue-prints and a blank photo album with torn out pages. Mr. Rotter is disappointed and tells her to re-do the assignment and bring it in the next day. At lunch, Robecca suggests going to the catacombs. She bets her dad wrote about Victor in his journal and says she can probably find it. Toreli overhears and invites herself. The Fusions come into the Creepateria and Frankie invites them to sit with them but Avia says they have their own table and they sit in a corner alone. Neighton asks why they couldn’t have ate with the others. They seem nice. But Avia says they’ll lose interest in them and they’ll be shipped off to another school.
Neightan says MH isn’t like that. All students are accepted and welcomed but Avia sticks to her beliefs and Bonita agrees. It’s one thing to have a freak flaw but they have a few more than just *one*. The ghouls reach a tunnel where Hexiciah’s lab should be. There’s a door with the face of a grandfather clock but behind the door there’s only a empty chasm. Robecca tries the door again but when opened there’s a dragon sitting on a mound of treasure.
Ghoulia gets the box to open and it resembles a replica of Hexicah’s lab-only tiny-. Then she figues out the box has to do with time Setting it on 12:55 reveals Hexicah’s workshop. The book says the workshop was a cobweb-covered mess. Gears, springs, bottles, and all kinds of mechanical parts littered the floor. Chains hung from the beams and catwalks. Old copper valves and pipes lined the walls. There were piles of torn blueprints and sketches on the scattered workbenches.
On one were steam boots just like the jet-powered ones Robecca wore, only bigger and covered in dust. Everything was covered in dust. At the far end of the circular room was a rusted recharge chamber. In the very center of the room was a huge platform. Robecca finds the journal and it does mention Victor. Hexiciah says Victor is the brightest and most promising student he’s ever had the pleasure of eductating. However, he says he has a dangerous innter personality that recklessly disregards the mysteries of life in pursuit of his scientific ambitions and he’s scared this will be his undoing.
Toralei causes a blue vortex to open and swallow all the ghouls inside. (Before this Robecca warned them not to touch anything. Especially Toralei). When they come to they find themselves in 1814 -at Monster High’s- opening. Toralei is no where to be found. Frankie is excited because now she can meet her grandfather in person but Jinafire warns her they can’t risk changing events in the past. So, they all agree to split up and look for Toralei and met back at the workshop in an hour. When the time transporter resets and can send them back to their time.
Frankie and Ghoulia end up in a younger Hexiciah’s class. Interestingly they find out Rotter-unlike he told them in class- was not Hexiciah’s favorite student.A student named “Sparky” says that since he’s an orphan he created a family for his scaritage report. Then he shows them how he tried to bring his creations to life. Only to have their parts fall off. Hexiciah tries to explain that it takes more than parts. It takes a “spark” or love. Or something more. But this just makes “Sparky” hysterical. He yells at everyone that he will create life and he’ll be the one that has the last laugh. For some reason Frankie feels upset for him. A hand gets detached and hits him in the face. He jumps up and runs out of the classroom.
Frankie goes to find “Sparky” in his lab on top of the tower. She tries to offer him sympathy because she doesn’t know a lot about her scaritage either. But at least he’s with people here that will be his family. He says he doesn’t need them. He can create his own family. If only he can figure it out. She offers to help him and pops off her hand. In amazement he asks how she can do that and she says her grandfather created her and her father in a lab. He must have found the spark his professor was speaking off. He wants to know who he grandfather is. Realizing she’s said to much Frankie flees the tower.
She finds her friends and they’ve *found* Torelei (and have her by the arms). Uknown to them, Sparky is watching them and thinking he has to find out who made Frankie and her father. Hexiciah is asleep in his workshop. Robecca slips him a note before leaving. Sparky rushes in and tells Frankie she has to help him. She says there’s no time. She’ll look him up when she gets home. She has a feeling he’ll do great things. But he gets sucked into the vortex. Cleo pushes Toralei through. Draculaura and Robecca are holding hands. Lagonna pushes Jinafire through and Clawdeen and Venus go through together.
When they come out of the vortex Toralei and Cleo are fused together. Clawdeen and Venus are fused together. Draculaura and Robecca are fused toger and Lagonna and Jinafire are fused together. Hexiciah’s lab is destroyed and so is his transporter. He sees Robecca’s note and thinks *hmm a daughter* I can work with that. The new fusions make a mess of rehersals. Neighton comes over to talk to Frankie afterwards and asks if she really meant what she said about MH being a family. She says yes and he says then maybe he and his friends can help them out with the Fusion situation.
Ghoulia tries to repair the broken teleporter but when she goes to get a smoothie, Sparky arrives and takes her Icoffin, laptop, the recharge chamber, and all the other tools and gadgets. Both sets of Fusions meet in the underground lab. Neightan makes the introductions. Bonita and Avia apologize for giving them the cold shoulder and explain they’ve had so many bad experiances at their old schools that they don’t trust anyone anymore. Frankie promises it will be different at MH. Lagoona makes Neightan confess his freaky flaws. He has some healing powers on his unicorn side but his zombie side makes him clumsy. Frankie thinks he’s totes adorbs! Meanwhile, Sparky has created an elaborate device involving the Recharge Chamber, the iCoffin, the laptop, and the teleporter lens all connected by a tangle of wires that led to a giant mound underneath a white sheet.
Nathan teaches Cleoleito talk out their problems, Avia teaches Dracubecca to successfully maneuver an obstacle course, Sirena works with Lagoonafire in the pool, and Bonita works with Clawveenus in the garden to meditate and practice yoga. Meanwhile, Sparky is causing the lights in the school to short and sneaking around MH collecting materials for his experiment. Now all the new Fusions have their powers under control. Nathan tells Frankie they’ll do great in the show. Frankie confesses she wishes she could talk to her grandfather. Robeeca’s father has her thinking how does she know she’s alive and not just parks. Then Neightan touches her and there’s a spark. He tells her that’s how she knows. While Ghoulia waits for the door to the portal to open, she gives herself a new curly style. She then hurries to make it to the talent show.
Ghoulia reports back to the others. She has good news and bad news. She’s figured out how to separate them, but the time transporter lens was stolen. Sparky’s experiment is a success. He brings the creature to life beneath the white sheet but its out of control and escapes. While Frankie is giving her introduction to the Bite-Centenial, the monster comes smashing up through the stage. It’s a combination of all the parts “Sparky” collected. Ghoulia recognizes the lens. Frankie recognizes Sparky. The creature grabs Cleolei and sucks her inside himself.
Sparky says if they can lead it to the recharge chamber they can probably take it out with enough electricity. Sparky and Ghoulia go ahead to charge the chamber. Frankie antagonizes the beast with the flash on her ICoffin and that’s when the beginning of the story comes in. The beast doesn’t like the flash and lunges for her. Neightan rushes up and saves her and then Ava, Bonita, and Sirena come to rescue them.
The creature ends up sucking into itself the other Fusions. Frankie has had enough and uses her spark to defeat the monster and save her friends. After this she uses up all her spark and collapses. Sparky sees that this is what his creation needed all along. He reveals to Frankie before she dies that he is her grandfather Victor. er friends decide to use Hexiciah's recharge chamber in hopes of reviving Frankie. She glows but their attempts fail. Hexiciah shows up and he and Robecca embrace. He tells Victor he’s late for their conversation by 200 years. He says he’s there to bring him back but first… He advises everyone to think of their best memories of Frankie to save her. Ghoulia spreads the word and everyone at Monster High begins sharing their sparks and Frankie is successfully revived. Frankie says goodbye to her grandfather. Robecca says goodbye to her father, Then they’re gone into the vortex.
Frankie Stein got an A on her scaritage report, Monster High got some voltageous new students, and Ghoulia got a brand-new laboratory. The very next day she moved her things into Hexiciah Steam’s old workshop. She updated it with modern equipment and laptops and cleaned out most of the cobweb
My Thoughts: *Nathan and Frankie are so cute together! I liked this one. I liked the Fusions!
*(NATHAN) especially. He kind of took the spotlight and the others were just background. Although in teaching the new MH fusions to deal with their other halves we did get a little more background on them. Nathan's chivalry and shyness endeared me to him. But yet again, I think the creators are stretching again in creating these new characters. Also, his clumsiness makes him as Frankie said "totes adorable".
*(AVIA) as a character I didn't immediately warm to because she's so STRONGLY against the monsters. She judges them based on NOTHING and seems to be the main one not wanting to give them a chance. I did read her diary that she got asked to give a ride at some boys sister's birthday party, she took offense to that, and he gave her and the other Fusions chase. However, that's not a good enough reason to have mistrust for everyone at the new school you go too. Come ON! That's lame! You're mean because you assume everyone's not gonna accept you until they prove you otherwise. Yeah, I get its good sometimes to keep your guard up, but you also have to keep an open mind. And maybe the kid truly didn't know centaurs don't give rides. Your bottom half is that of a horse for goodness sake! She does help Robecca and Draculaura with a lesson of taking charge, but I guess she's the type character that's hard to love. Take it or leave it. That's who she is. And I just haven't found the like yet in her. Are there more stories (webisodes with her)? But if anything I like about her she takes a strong sense of pride in her heritage. She speaks fondly of her parents and how they meet in her journal. Interesting she's into Manny.
*(SIRENA) is the "dizzy" one. It works. She's not the annoying kind. Kinda of the likable clueless that reminds you of Cher from Clueless. She distracts the monster in the beginning of the book. "Over here." "No over here." So even though she's a lil loopy she's brave.
*(BONITA) this character is very much like Sirena. So much so I wasn't sure which one I was describing and I kind of forgot what this one did. But she's the one that helps Clawvenus in the garden with meditating. Honestly, she was a little one dimensional. All we get from her is that she chews her clothes (from her moth side) and she's the nervous type. Sometimes Monster High brings in these character's, sticks them in books. and doesn't flesh them out enough for me.
*(SPARKY) I appreciated the ties between him and Frankie. Such as I think it was Holt Hyde in the books that nicknamed Frankie "Sparky". Also, I remember the book where Frankie tried to create her first pet and similarly it didn't want to stay with her either and she was disappointed same as her grandfather with his creation. (Frankie's Journal The New Ghoul In School). Sparky also made me want to read the original story of the character from which his origin was created. But I thought it was weird that Mr. and Mrs. Stein didn't tell Frankie because they wanted her to meet him in person. HUNH? So they knew one day she'd traveled back in time to find him. That did NOT make ANY SENSE! Sparky though wasn't a very likable character. But I did find myself feeling sorry for him that deep down all he really seemed to want was a family.
*(HEXICAH)- I liked that we got introduced to him. Well, this is interesting. According to his journal, he's part fae. I also didn't know he was made into a doll. He's VERY handsome! In the story, he sheds a lot of light (figurately and literally) on how to create life. Which down the line brings the creation of the Steins and our girl (ghoul) Frankie.
*Somehow the doll Ghoulia and the one I remember from the movie's new hair looked NOTHING alike. The movie one's hair was SNATCHED!
*(PLOT) Liked. 1 The old Fusions teaching the newer fusions to create a balance with one another 2. The Catacombs continues to fascinate me. Not only is there a secret Halloween museum/ballroom in there, now there's also a hidden lab. How many other hidden treasures will we get to find out about down there? 3. That we got the origins of the Steins 4. Frankie finding her spark & did she EVER find her spark. She lite into old grand-daddy. Plus I can't be the first to have wondered if not only was the recharge chamber that but a transformation chamber like Steve Urkels. Her hair AND clothe's were changed. Dislike: There really wasn't anything I disliked about this one.

Still a good book, but certainly not the best from the books I read in this series.
I think the main culprit would be Sparky. Dear Lord, what a rotten, annoying boy that is. I can understand why he did things, but that doesn't make them better. I hated him throughout the book, and of course also already knew who he really was (I mean, duh, it is so easy to see, the hints are everywhere). I just wanted to skip through all the Sparky stuff, but sadly I knew he would turn out to be important, so I just kept on reading. :|
The fun parts were the new monsters we have + a new romance that is blossoming between two characters (Which seems to be the theme of all these books. New Monsters + Bad person + romance.). Neightan was awesome, though he did look a bit weird. Sorry, but really, a unicorn + zombie? Um.... were the creators out of options or something? All the others did make more sense. A girl + centaur's legs/horse or a ghost mermaid. Still they were great characters, and they also brought some reality in the book and showed that Monster High truly is a place for any and all monsters. Because even though everyone is pretty spooky, creepy, scary, you still have discrimination against those that are different (Fusions). It was interesting that such a real theme was written this way. It is not the first time that this theme pops up, but I think it was even better written in this book (and I would also say the Haunted book in this series with the Solids and the Ghosts).
This book is all about Frankie Stein and her scaritage. Her parents refuse to tell her anything about it (but later you will find out why), and she is in trouble with a teacher thanks to that. Frankie is such a sweet, amazing character, and near the end I just cried a bit at what happened there. *sniffs* Of course, as I said, there is also romance, just like every book, the main character will find her boy of dreams (generally a brand-new character).
Ah, and we also find out more about Robecca and her father. Which brought some more tears in my eyes during several moments. Awwww.
The story was really great, and I loved that for once it took place at Monster High again. I loved all the other books that had travel and such, but this one was also nice because I love Monster High. I also loved what happened to the ghouls, it did bring them closer to each other in the end, and I think that is just so sweet. Especially some of them could really use that extra push to friendship *looks at Toralei or Cleo*.
All in all, this was one interesting book, but again, the addition of Sparky didn't make it very good. Still I would recommend it because of the backstory it gives + the cute romance.
A great junior novel for those that love a mystery. It is intriguing and exciting. Such a great message about accepting all types of people (or Monsters). It helps us to look at our differences and to simply befriend people even if they are different then you. I love that the novel highlights that we all have something that we don't like about ourselves. You simply accept those things and focus on the positives. Celebrate our uniqueness and be kind.
This book is awesome! It is definitely one of the books that you should read. I am a 10 year old girl who reads often. I was able to read this book in 2 1/2 days. The best part of the book was when they helped Frankie come back to life!
I haven't watched the movie yet, but I thought the story was awesome. Monster High movies take up some really strong and complex topics, & I think converting them into short chapter books is perfect for readers & MH fans everywhere.
Oh my gosh love this book I have it I own it so fun to read so neat I wish I had the movie love the movie I love the old monster High not the new one and I mean it the new one can go to hell I love love the old one it's so good it's so traditional and so yeah cool
Lots of black-and-white illustrations plus some color pages. The book covers the movie. It's well done and if you liked the movie you will very probably like this junior novel version.
