As Erica stalks through Ergastulum, leaving a trail of dead in her wake, Delico copes with the heartbreaking news that this most dangerous Hunter is actually his long-lost little sister. After a lifetime of separation, he’s determined to bring her back, but a fragile sibling bond may not be enough to counter the merciless force of destiny.
Kohske made her manga debut in 2009 with the short story "Postman" in Shonen GanGan magazine. Her first ongoing serial, GANGSTA., began in 2010. Her second series, DOODLE, began serialization in 2013. She currently resides in Hokkaido and owns a pet java sparrow named Fumi.
Well, I had forgotten about this series, after having read five volumes, so after two years picked it up again. I had four-starred each of the previous volumes, primarily because of the great art and relationships. It’s an elaborate gang story with too many characters to keep track of, even after reviewing what happened in the previous volumes, but as it turns out this is a big, splashy, dramatic volume. This is seinen manga, for teens and adults, focused primarily on three young people. Worick is a gigolo, blind in one eye, Nick deaf; together they liberate a young prostitute, Alex, who joins them in their work of "handymen" who do independent criminal jobs, sort of like Ronin samurai warriors.
Gangsta is set in the future, and is very violent, with sex and drugs, and highly stylized visuals. And in spite of the dramatic surface, it’s primarily character-driven. In this one the reveals and twists and acts of violence are sometimes on the gasp level (and in black and white, too!) though I will admit I am still a bit lost, there's so many different gangs and characters. I will try to get into it again, though. There’s one moment that reminds you that Kohske isn’t just about the action sequences he draws particularly well; a Hunter, Delico, realizes one of his targets is his long lost sister, Eliza. Uh oh. Lots of feels.
This was so sad! I didn’t realize how much I loved a lot of these side characters until a few of them started being killed off... Aside from volume 3 (with my weak spot for Worick and Nico's childhood backstory), this was probably the next best instalment! There were so many meaningful moments between characters, with a lot of shocking revelations and tension-filled scenes. Nico’s and Yang’s current state has me really worried, and that cliffhanger(!!) I can’t not binge the rest of this series.
How am I supposed to survive with a cliffhanger like that!?
After finishing the anime, I had to catch up on the manga due to cosplaying Nic next weekend to an event.
Why did I do that. T_T There's so much stuff still going on and Volume 7's English release nowhere in sight. I don't even want to think of what will happen after Volume 7's release since the author is in the hospital and hasn't written too much for it.
Oh right, an actual review.
Lots of BAD THINGS happen. That's pretty much the only way to sum it up without spoiling anything.
^They looked so happy and not broken back then. T_T
DNF I keep trying but this series just kept going downhill for me. and then I find out the author has discontinued the series. Not going to fret and be confused reading a series when the creator can't even finish it.
Another high stakes volume... Nic’s continual self-destruction is fascinating and heart-breaking, especially seeing Worick and Al’s reactions to his choices.
From beginning to end, the sixth volume of Kohske's "Gangsta" series thrusts a dense amount of truth into the light. Not only for the antiheroes we love, but for the adversaries readers could have mixed feelings for too.
It was a volume that also shed light on the bonds the Twilights and Normals share with one another, some platonic and others romantic. They, along with moments of comedy between Ally and Worick, Cody and Chad, grant the reader a change of pace that is much appreciated. Granted, it is often in times of hardship and loss, but it still reminds the reader that in times of pain we can pause and laugh or feel sympathy and empathy that changes our perspective for the better.
Given the ending of this volume it is clear we will need more pauses like that now that things are going to take a turn for the unknown and the lethal. Volume seven will contain justice for some, but at a cost. Who will pay the ultimate price? There is one way to find out; just keep reading!
While I still love the plot twists and developing relationships between characters, as well as Kohske's awesome art style, the books are drifting closer to "being unhappy all the time" than I would like. I'm not good at sticking to a series with so few moments of levity between horrible and depressing scenes. I'm a reader who needs a break every once in a while so that I can see how the characters are processing events and how they've been affected. This is not the case with Gangsta., which will switch from one heart-wrenching plot twist to the next with no remorse. I'll finish up the next volume and the first of the spin-off series, but I'm not sure if I'll read further than that. It's still a great ride, just a little too bleak for my tastes.
Okay this one knocked me the fuck on my ass. There was a lot that developed over the course of this volume and just about all of it was devastating. Within these tragic pages were quiet moments with our characters and in a manga where violence is a constant, I very much appreciated these slower and softer reflections. I continue to adore how Kohske illustrates Nic's fighting style, there's a weightlessness to his movements and even on paper I can feel how fast he is in battle. Alex has my whole heart and her interactions with Nic never fail to give me butterflies. Just two more volumes to go and then we wait...
This series makes me worry for more characters than I can remember, haha. This volume really pop’s off the war that was boiling in Ergastulum. It’s really jam packed with fights and there was a twist I never even saw coming. Alex and Nicolas finally had some bonding time which was much needed although under better circumstances! I finally saw Worick’s feelings regarding Nicolas. Their relationship is a little confusing in my perspective because I don’t know what is it based on exactly. I have a few theories but they are all based from when they were children.
Estoy llorando con todo lo que ocurre en este volumen JODER. Osea el 5 no me gustó tanto, me dejo como que le falto algo, pero esto no se supera. La cantidad de cosas que ocurren es increíble.
