With their big round ears, moon-shaped crescents, and irresistible personalities, there is plenty to love about moon bears. Full of fascinating facts, this book is brought to life with stunning photographs by renowned wildlife photographer Mark Newman.
I love how many books have been published recently about moon bears and how they are frequently used for traditional Chinese medicine. Filled with large photographs that show the beautiful creatures eating, playing, climbing up trees, and just chilling out, this book is sure to bring even more attention to these extraordinary animals and the work done by Animals Asia and others working to rescue those in captivity and encourage changes in how the bears are treated in their home countries. Because the photographer gets close to the bears and even shares their names, readers will certainly be moved by them and fall in love with the personalities of hungry baby Angus, Matilda with her keen sense of smell, and Poppy with her round ears, among others. Some photographs even show the moon bears standing on their hind legs, which looks a bit comical with their rotund tummies showing and their distinctive crescent shape of their chests. The use of large fonts to highlight the important material on each page helps readers recognize various characteristics of the bears. I'd be surprised if this book doesn't prompt youngsters and adults to consider making a donation to one of the animal sanctuaries involved in rescuing them and providing them with a safe place to live. This book will certainly make its way into my science collection because of its attractive photographs, taken in China and Vietnam, and for the author's obvious appreciation for this unique species. Teachers may want to share this as a read aloud with their students and as a reminder that there are many ways that each of us can make a difference in the world around us.
Core Curricular Tie: 2nd Grade Reading: Research & Inquiry / Life Science
Explanation: This book would be an excellent resource for the second grade reading unit on researching animals and their habitats. It also correlates to state standards on life sciences. I believe the book would best be introduced as a read aloud as it provides in depth information that would provide a foundational example for students before they begin research on their assigned animal. While reading this book aloud, it would very natural to stop at times to point out specific examples that would be important to note in the research and inquiry process.
Rationale: I chose this book because it is highly engaging. It vividly describes the physical and behaviorial characteristics of this distinct and endangered species in colorful photographs and descriptive text. The book starts by portraying the physical traits of moon bears and continues through a complete description of their natural habitat. The explanation of why this particular species is being protected in a Chinese rescue center is particularly engaging. It would be a great introductory research book as it builds upon knowledge students might already have about bears by providing very specific details and a "Did You Know" section that compares this species to others. Finally, the book contains links to additional online information on moon bears that students could use while conducting their inquiry.
This nonfiction text about the Moon Bear is told by introducing a specific moon bear on each page who lives in a rescue center in China. The photographs and text are mixed in ways that showcase each bear as the author tells the readers about this interesting creature. It begins with Ginny and explains how they got their name: due to a large cream-colored crescent across its chest. Interesting each bear's markings are not exactly alike. Each bear we meet has a distinct personality and kids will relate to this. At the end of the text are more facts about these bears. Bear bile is used for medicinal purposes in Asia-something I did not know. The bears are kept in tiny cages and a tube is inserted in their gallbladder and drained-this is very painful. Thus the reason for this rescue sanctuary to save these bears. The author, Mark Newman, wrote this book specifically to draw awareness to the problem and he did a fantastic job of personalizing the bears and their plight.
The Moon bear, or Asiatic black bear are a unique breed of bear. They get their name from the large cream-colored crescent across their chest. Every moon bear has their own unique marking on their chest. This is the story of the bears at Animals Asia. They are trying to rescue as many as they can. They are milked for their bile which is supposed to have medicinal purposes according to their culture. Animals Asia is trying their best to rescue as many of them as they can it this book does a great job of introducing the reader to some of the animals previously rescued and their names as well. The author does a great job of connecting the reader to the plight of these defenseless animals. I would recommend this for any collection looking for more books on unique animals as well as for research topics for school projects.
Moon Bears have a moon shaped crescent across their chests. They have excellent hearing and sense of smell. They are intelligent and curious and can walk on their hind legs for up to a quarter of a mile. There is much to learn about these interesting animals.
The appeal of this little-known species is undeniable, made more so by photography and information about the threats to their freedom and stability in the ecosystem.
Interesting facts about Moon Bears, photographs are lovely, as the bears are named wish they had been grouped instead of having some bears only have one mention and then others two.
