The handsome Angel from Lailah gets center stage in this continuation of Wattpad sensation Nikki Kelly’s romantic and action-packed series about mortals, vampires, and angels.
Gabriel is an Angel Descendant. He's also an ally to a generation of vampires who want to break away from the demon who controls them. His faith in the power of good over evil wavers, however, when he discovers that Lailah, the woman he considers his only true love, may be both angel and demon. Is their love enough to overcome the dark forces who are ready to go to war with Gabriel, the vampire Jonah, and the angel and vampire forces? And can Gabriel compete with Jonah, who is also in love with Lailah?
Once again, Nikki Kelly looks deeply into the heart and soul of good and evil to create a romantic, action-packed reading adventure.
Nikki Kelly was born and raised only minutes away from the chocolately scent of Cadbury World in Birmingham, England. So it will probably come as no surprise that when She's not dreaming in Vampires & Angels, She dreams in chocolate! For the past ten years She has lived in West London with her hubby and two dogs, Alfie - the Pug & Goose - the Chihuahua.
This book is mind blowing, heart stopping, and absolutely thrilling! It's no secret that the first book, Lailah quickly became a favorite for me and this book has been added to the list. Things that happened in this book were so unexpected and I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
When the book begins Lailah awakens and she has to adjust to same changes within herself. She has to figure out if she wants to truly embrace both sides of herself, the light and the dark. Of course, there is also the Angel, Gabriel and the vampire, Jonah Who both have feelings for her. (Everyone knows I love Jonah!) To me this book is about Lailah Finding her way and figuring what she is meant to do and what is her destiny. I would love to go on and on, but I do not want to put in any spoilers.
"I knew where my final destination would be; I think I had always known."
For lovers of Paranormal romance this is the perfect book! I would really encourage other readers to give this series a go. I stayed up all night to finish this book. I was sitting up in bed crying and mumbling to myself while my husband looked at me like I had lost my mind. I had to remind him that books are everything! And this book is everything! Do not go into this book thinking you know what will happen. YOU HAVE NO IDEA! So many feelings! So many lingering thoughts! I cannot wait to see what happens in book 3. I'll be here waiting...
An Electronic Advanced Reader Copy was provided by the publisher via Edelweiss for review.
Lailah is back with Gabriel and even though she remembers everything that has happened with him, she doesn't remember a thing about Jonah. Does she truly belong with one or the other? Does she realize how important her growing powers are against this angel and vampire war?
I have to had it to Nikki Kelly because she sure knows to write love triangles well. I got to know more about the self-titled Angel Gabriel and even though being good and righteous is a great thing, I found him to be rather selfish. At least selfish in the beginning and his actions were revealed at the end. Then it just made me sad. Jonah was merely absent for he had more of an effect with Lailah in the first book, but his charming annoying personality is still bright and shining here.
I loved how this book ended, even though this was too much of a filler book, I still want to know how this war will end. I find it fascinating because good vs. evil stories are just my favourite! What I wanted was more plot development but I ended up getting more character development which isn't a bad thing considering Lailah finally realizes and embraces herself..There's always the one boy you're rooting for, but in other cases you root for the girl herself. And I was rooting for Lailah all the way to the end!
Nikki Kelly comes out swinging with her sophomore book, Gabriel. After the events that left off in Lailah, our girl is now both light and dark in one. She is desperately trying to come to grips with both sides of herself. She know her heart belongs to Gabriel so why can't she turn away from that dark brooding vampire, Jonah? One of the rare examples of love triangles that actually work, it is interesting to see Lailah discover herself....again and what she feels she wants as well. This review was originally posted on Please Feed the Bookworm Click here to keep reading bout my feels!
No matter how YOU picture a story going, leave it to Nikki Kelly to steer you off in another direction and completely reset that hook once again. Gabriel is back, Lailah is back and the turmoil between them is in turns, heart wrenching, maddening and completely unexpected. Why is their love so difficult?
Caught between her own inner light and dark sides, Lailah finds her heart is likewise split. As her memory returns, the brooding vampire Jonah looms large like a niggling thought that just isn’t quite clear enough to see. Lailah’s heart knows there is more to their relationship, but her heart also knows she belongs to Gabriel. Can Gabriel accept her dark side? Will he risk his angelic nature to stay by her side?
Two men, one is dark, one is light, each a hero in their own way, angels, vampires and Lailah are about to face more action and danger, of both the heart and the body. What price are they willing to pay for their own form of freedom?
Nikki Kelly, congratulations on another riveting and from the soul read! You have created characters that draw on every emotion this reader has, sometimes even pulling a tear or tight throat out of me. Love is love, no matter who a person is, prepare yourselves to see the unselfishness, the fear and the acceptance of love, but where will Lailah find it? Nonstop from start to finish, Nikki Kelly mixes it up and throws another winner into the arena of literary gems!
I received an ARC edition from Macmillan Children's Publishing Group - Feiwel & Friends in exchange for my honest review.
Series: The Styclar Saga - Book 2 Publication Date: October 27, 2015 Publisher: Feiwel & Friends ISBN 9781250051530 Genre: YA Fantasy Print Length: 384 pages Available from: Amazon | Barnes & Noble For Reviews & More: http://tometender.blogspot.com
Gabriel is the exciting second book in the Styclar Saga, the follow-up to Lailah. As the title of this one suggests, it expands on Gabriel’s character – the angel who is the other half of Lailah’s light – her soul mate, if you will. The book is still told through Lailah’s POV, as she discovers that the people (and angels and vampires) around her are willing to sacrifice everything for her – she just isn’t sure that her life is worth the sacrifice.
What fed my addiction:
Lailah’s acceptance of her darker side. While the synopsis claims that this book is about Gabriel, I would contend that it’s actually more about Lailah accepting all of who she is, despite her love for Gabriel and her desire to please him. Now that Lailah knows that the dark woman from the first book is a part of her, she has to learn to tame that darkness and she sometimes has to learn to embrace it. Answers. We get quite a few new pieces to the puzzle in this book and learn more about Lailah’s abilities, her family and her purpose. I can’t wait to see where Kelly goes with the story next!
Jonah. When Lailah wakes up from being brought back to life (in the first book) she has no memory of Jonah for some reason. So she struggles between feeling like she owes him in some way and sensing that he wants something more from her – something she’s not willing to give. Jonah responds much like Jonah does – he sacrifices for her, but also pushes her away, unwilling to accept less than her love and bitter about the fact that she doesn’t remember him. I loved any part of the story that focused on Jonah. Guess I’m rooting for the bad boy in this series – but it’s simply because he accepts Lailah for who she is – all of her – and he still puts Lailah first, just like Gabriel does. Jonah’s darker nature doesn’t make him seem like a dark character, and I’m pretty much always on his side.
The ending. The book ends in a way that puts some things to rights (in my opinion) and also propels Lailah in a new and very interesting direction!
What left me wanting more:
The focus on Gabriel. My problem with a book that focuses on Gabriel is that he’s just not all that likable. It really seems like the only reason he’s in love with Lailah is because he was born to love her, and while his willingness to do anything for her is commendable, it just never feels like he’s doing it for the absolute right reasons. And it seems a bit like he’s holding Lailah back because she just wants to please him so badly. Now, I will say that all of these things were completely by design – intentional decisions made by Kelly to drive the story forward – but that didn’t stop them from bugging me a little bit. I kind of wanted to get past the Gabriel parts and see Lailah’s personal journey or her story with Jonah.
This book is a fantastic follow-up to Lailah that leads us into even darker territory. I give it 4/5 stars.

"I knew where my final destination would be; I think I had always known."
Ahhhh....Gabriel....Seriously...I have been obsessed with this series since I first opened the pages of Lailah. I loved the whole light and dark struggle and the breath-taking romance between Lailah and Gabriel...So I really couldn't wait to start Gabriel!
Gabriel picks up right where Lailah left off. Lailah is struggling to get her memory back and as pieces begin to come back to her...she begins to realize she has feelings for both Gabriel and Jonah. Gabriel, the angel...the light side is Lailah's true love but yet on the other side is Jonah, the vampire...the dark side and Lailah is drawn to him almost as much as she is Gabriel.
This book is really focused on Lailah and the path she chooses and how her decisions will affect her and those around her for the rest of her life. She is so torn and is trying to decide whether she can accept both the light and dark side and if she can manage to live with them both.
There is also a lot of character development in this book and we learn more background about other characters and I loved this aspect because there are other characters in this book that I really enjoyed learning about.
Gabriel is all about forbidden love, supernatural romance, and plenty of suspense. I absolutely LOVED Lailah and Gabriel did not disappoint. I cannot wait to read the conclusion to this series and see just where Lailah's journey will end. I am so completely obsessed with Nikki Kelly and cannot wait to read more from this amazing author!!!
Lailah is badass. There's really no other way you can describe her. She absolutely blew my mind in this book. Maybe not at first but man, by the three quarters mark, she was fierce. This is not someone you want on your bad side; trust me.
I came in to this book absolutely on team Gabriel. I left this book firmly on team Jonah. It's not that I don't like Gabriel because I do but there's just something missing with him, when it comes to Lailah. It's sad because I was really rooting for him. But he was a creep in this book. Especially for the first quarter of the book. I mean, he reminded me of Edward Cullen from Twilight and that's not a good sing (hello, Team Jacob here). Overprotective. Way overprotective. Gabe, my man, you were really starting to creep me out. Don't worry - he took a chill pill and relaxed some. But gone is the Gabriel from the first book.
But gone are all the characters from the first book. They've all grown up, matured and gotten fiercer (is that even a word? It is now).
Jonah. You were dark, mysterious and sexy in the first book but I'm not a sucker for the 'bad boys'. I'm a sucker for the good guys, boy next doors, boys you can bring home to mama - those types. So please, don't take any offense to me boarding the Jonah express a little late. You weren't my cup of tea. But man, were you everything I wanted in this book. Even when Gabe was creeping me out I was still unsure about you. It took quite a bit of convincing but by midway through, you had me - hook line and sinker. You broke my heart in this book, though. And I'm pretty sure you know when.
The story gets darker, more dangerous and more risky, as all things do. Lailah has a pretty epic moment with someone from the first book. One that is very deserving and one I had to try my hardest to not to whoop aloud for.
If you loved Lailah, there is no reason you won't love this book. If you loved Gabriel, like me, there's no reason you won't love this book and there's no reason you won't still love him (I still do). If you loved Jonah, well - brace yourselves. He's dreamy.
Thank you so much to Macmillan for allowing me the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to FFBC for allowing me to be a part of this blog tour.
Gabriel was a perfect game changer of a sequel and it does all things that a good sequel ought to do: add a new layer to both our character, see how their relationships change and are challenged and peel away new layers in the world building and the plot, leaving us with a bit of whiplash after some reveals that do turn our world upside down!
I will try by best to keep things as spoiler free for book one as possible but to be safe just run along and read Lailah right now! Done? Well, Gabriel picks up right where Lailah left us and that was a doozy! So much has changed for Lailah and Gabriel and Jonah! All three of them have quite a bit of character development to go through because things have changed so very drastically!
I really like Lailah's growth and how she found the strenght in herself to finally acccept who she is, but the road there was NOT easy at all, and at times I was feeling a bit likely to shake her for being so stubborn and taking so many riks!
Gabriel and Jonah both pissed me equally on the first half of the book or so! So protective, to treating Lailah like a fragile being and keeping secrets for "her own good"... I really felt like slapping them both! And even if I didn't agree with Lailah taking the riks she did, I understand that she was not happy to be told that she was superpowerful but it'd be better is she stayed home like a good girl!
I did warn you about plot twist and unexpected revelations and I should also warn you about a massively evil cliffhanger (I had been warned, and it helped, but not that much!!) and also... *whispers*thelovetrianglegetsresolved*whispers* but I won't say ANY more since you really need to read it to see how it all makes sense!
Now I'm dying to get my hands on book three!! DAMNED AWFUL CLIFFHANGER!! *shakes fist at Nikki*
I loved this book just as much as the first! I thought the way the characters developed was very well thought out. I love Lailah and her strong personality of not wanting to do wrong in anyone's eyes. She is one of the best female characters I have ever read! She finally accepts her fate and stops running from on side of herself opposed to the other. This book focused a lot on her inner struggle with herself which goes right along with her struggle to choose a guy, which is better light or dark? Of course the answer to that isn't as simple as it seems. If she chooses one she loses the other but only one accepts her for who she is and doesn't want her to hide a part of her. That is when I really started to like Jonah better than Gabriel. I loved Jonah from the start because something about his bad boy arrogance got to me, but by the end of the first book I was sold on him with his conversation with Gabriel about Lailah. He found the light in her dark where as Gabriel can never accept her dark in her light. LOVED it!!

*My Thoughts*
Gabriel is the second installment in author Nikki Kelly's The Styclar Saga. As one would imagine, it took me awhile to get back into this series since it has been a year and a half since I read Lailah. Lots of books have come and gone during that wait. I had to remind myself how the first installment, Lailah, ended, and what one of my major hurdles was in loving the first book. Had to remind myself that Lailah is a character who isn't who she seems. She is much, much more. She doesn't age like others. She doesn't permanently die like others. And, she has a tendency of losing her memories.
After a rough start for me in the beginning fighting my anger at myself for not re-reading Lailah, the book was great! I struggled in the beginning try to reconnect to the voice and characters but, like I said, partly my fault because I couldn't remember as much as I would have liked from Lailah. Once I got into though, I could NOT put it down. It was definitely a 'just one more chapter before bed' type of books and I stayed up way too later reading! Loved the character development in this one and the story progression!
NAO QUERO TERMINAR A TRILOGIA EU TO TAO APEGADA AOS PERSONAGENS
personagens = Jonah (perhaps Ruadhan too…)

This series has me hooked. I told a friend that I had swapped sides in the middle of the book and become Team Jonah! I'm sorry; I have a weakness for Vampires. Lailah is your normal save everyone despite herself protagonist. The story took an odd turn but a fairly predictable. I thought it weird for the author to introduce a family of vampire hunters into the middle of her story, but then realized where we were about to go. Book 3 is going to take us to the third dimension, aka the UNDERWORLD. I'm trying to wrap my head around all the stories the author is giving each character. Its obvious that she loves mythology and folklore because there are snippets of each with your Vampires, Angels and Fallen Angels. All in all, a magnificent series and I am looking forward to reading Jonah. I hope I get the ending that I desire.
Hated Gabriel through the whole thing. He's controlling and toxic. He says one thing, but his actions say another. I would've rated it two stars, but I like the way it ended, so it gained a star thanks to Lailah's decision.
'Gabriel' is the captivating second book in a young adult paranormal series that continues to leave fans of the genre begging for more. It continues to follow Lailah - our main character - as she comes back to life yet again. Only this time, she knows her true nature and has accepted it, which allows her to retain the majority of her memories from the past few years, including the truth behind her connection with Gabriel and the dual nature of her being. Along with the truth and memories, Lailah is able to keep both her Angel and her Vampire attributes at the same time - meaning she's the only being that can retain her form in all three dimensions. Lailah and Gabriel decide to stay off of the Arch Angels and the Vampire's radars, because once they know she's alive again - both sides will come after her.
I read and absolutely loved the first book in this series, so I did have pretty high hopes and expectations for this second installment. I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed in the least. It lived up to any hopes I had and then blew them away. I loved every single bit of this book - from the characters to the various settings and time periods, to the vivid details and history of the vampires, the angels, and of Lailah herself. During the first book, I couldn't seem to get enough background about the Vampires or Angels - and most of all - the mystery of Lailah herself. My intrigue only deepened after finishing the first book and while reading this one. I devoured this novel in a few short hours because I seriously couldn't - and wouldn't - stop reading until I had completely finished. The characters continued to be complex with distinct personalities and made all the more realistic with their flaws and strengths. I loved getting to know even more about Lailah and her story - all of the lives she's lived, how she came to be a mixture of both realms, and all the other intricate details about her. Of course, I also continued to adore the other two major characters - Gabriel and Jonah - throughout the book. Watching them each grow personally along with their complex relationships with one another was fascinating. As I mentioned, the storybuilding was beyond fantastic. The vivid imagery along with all the details and descriptions made it incredibly easy for me to fall back into Lailah's world early on.
The plot was magnificent - it continues to be unique and completely different from most other stories out there, which is saying a lot because of the overwhelming amount of titles in the YA fantasy/paranormal genre. There were just a few times in the book that annoyed me for one reason or another - I can't even put them together collectively because they were each different reasons and didn't have an overall effect on my reading experience. I personally can't get enough of this series - I'm in love with every single aspect of it; the characters, story line, histories, romance - I could go on and on. I seriously can't recommend this book (or series) highly enough to those who enjoy YA paranormal and fantasy, as well as readers who are looking for a unique and refreshing story among those like it in the genre. I'm seriously already dying for the next installment to see what will happen next. I honestly don't know how I'm going to survive the long wait until the next book is released. I need it now! Seriously though, you need to read this book (series) NOW, if you haven't already. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Let me just say that I am a member of the Styclar Street Team, and I'm also a good friend of Nikki Kelly herself. So when she said that I was getting an ARC of Gabriel, I was practically over the moon. I loved Lailah, and I was Team Gabriel from the start. So long story short, I was super excited. And as soon as that ARC got into my hands, I dove right into it.
The book takes you back to all of the characters that you loved from Lailah. You get to see Gabriel, Jonah, Brooke, Rudhan, and Lailah (obviously), plus a whole bunch of new characters that you will come to both love and hate. I ended up liking a lot of the new characters, such as Iona, and a few others that seemed alright to me. But as the story went on, Nikki Kelly, who is officially the new queen of plot twists, ended up throwing in some massive twists.
I won't spoil anything for you guys, but I will say this: Some characters that you know and love end up surprising you big time, in all different ways. I experienced a lot of swooning, shocked gasps, and even dismayed cries. A lot goes down in this book, so you don't have to worry about running out of interest. Something is always going on, and something is always shocking you.
If you read the previous book, Lailah, you would know that at the end of the first book, Lailah discovered that she is half angel and half vampire. It's a tough pill to swallow, because Gabriel - the Angel that she loves - is having a difficult time accpepting the vampiric side of her. (Minor spoiler incoming!) Jonah, on the other hand, accepts both sides of Lailah...but there's one problem.
She doesn't remember him. At all.
As soon as I found that out, I freaked out. (And that isn't really spoiling much for you guys because you find that out pretty much right away.) I was Team Gabriel from the get go so I still wanted Lailah to be with him, but when I found out that she looked at Jonah and didn't get even the tiniest spark of recognition, I was a bit heartbroken.
This book takes you through a whole bunch of ups and downs, intense fights, steamy scenes, bloody scenes, and a whole bunch of heartbreak. You need to fasten your seatbelts, because you're definitely going to be taken on an interesting journey! I'm kind of shocked myself to be admitting this, but after reading this book...I may be leaning a bit towards Team Jonah. O.O (If you can't believe it, don't worry. I can't either. But some of the things that go down in this book may make you want to reconsider what team you're on.)
All in all, Gabriel was a great book that I really, really liked. Nikki Kelly is such a sweetheart so I was so honored to get a chance to read an ARC copy of this book, and I love the Styclar Saga so much that I'm definitely going to be eagerly awaiting the third and final book! (Which, I'm assuming, may be called Jonah...but I'll let you know as soon as I get those deets verified! :D)
I'm so glad that I got an opportunity to be on this tour, and now I'll eagerly be awaiting the third and final book in the Styclar Saga! Also, shoutout to Nikki Kelly for being so darn awesome all of the time. Love you! :-)
This sequel is slightly more interesting than the first book. I gave both 3 stars. I love the mythology, the angel stuff and that made up word of Styclar which is like heaven. This is set in the U.K. or at least I think it is. There were moments in this book where I was excited and moments when I was bored. Maybe because I am so sick of vampire stuff, or because I don’t like British-y books. I love magic and sci-fi stuff and this defiantly had some but it’s not as compelling as other paranormal books I’ve read.
I thought it was cool that Lailah had changed and now had angel and vampire abilities and her hair is now blong and black, and her eye are blue with dark spots. Transformations in characters are cool. Though I don’t get why so many female heroines lately want to get short haircuts. Like a haircut is a great disguise or something. She can now travel by thought and quickly. She can feed on sunlight or blood. She’s a pretty unique character in those ways, but I feel a lack of personality. She seems kind of quiet, I guess. Possibly a little Mary-su. We get to meet a new set of character that are Irish demon-hunters. They use like at the end of sentences a lot.
I wish that there was more romance with Jonah. Lailah forgot him and now only loves Gabriel. The love triangle was broken, but maybe only temporarily. In the previous book, Jonah had reminded me of Damon from the Vampire Diaries. Jonah’s American. He’s got a bad boy persona and a romantic nicer side. He’s get-under-your-skin annoying, but you can’t help but like him. Gabriel is more mysterious and very loving and caring. He’s light and love. He’s not the real Gabriel, the Arch Angel, but a younger angel “descendent.” I recommend this book to fans of Twilight, Fallen, Hush, Hush, Everneath by Brodi Ashton, The Dark Element series by Jennifer Armentrout, the Halo series by Alexandra Adornetto, the Embrace series by Jessica Shirvington. If you still love reading vampire books or even angel books, then you should try reading this book. If you are sick of vampires or angels, then it’s probably not a series for you.
Cover Art Review: Somewhat cool looking cover. The fire and the birds are cool.
(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).
(This review may contain spoilers).
I liked being able to read the sequel to Lailah. I found myself drawn really easily into this book and it was interesting to see the effects on the characters from the previous book.
While it was interesting to see the fact that Lailah had completely forgotten Jonah, I didn’t really like the info dumping that came in at the beginning of the book. I would have preferred to see the recap done in a better way… perhaps in a conversation between Gabriel and Lailah.
It was good to see the characters from the previous book. I did feel a lot of sympathy for Jonah through this book and although I have a strong dislike for love triangles, I did think that Lailah’s draw to Gabriel and Jonah in different ways came across really well.
I have to say, I didn’t think the prologue was necessary. It felt a bit jarring and didn’t fit with the rest of the story, since everything in it was then made clear in the rest of the book. I did find it interesting to see Lailah interacting with the vampire hunters and how she got to know them… though I did have a lot of reservations about Phelan.
I was intrigued to see how Lailah was struggling to fully accept her dual nature and was struggling to bring herself out of the darkness. In stark contrast, it was interesting to see the way Gabriel seemed to be falling further and further.
There were times I had a lot of sympathy for Lailah, especially considering how cold Jonah was acting towards her. At the same time, I did think that she kept making poor decisions… and did end up putting her friends in danger due to what she chose to do.
I thought it was good to see how the song played quite a big part in the book and I did find it hard to believe that Gabriel loved Lailah like she was now. I did really like Ruadhan, though, and how protective he was of Lailah especially. And it was good to see Brooke and Fergal together.
I would be interested in reading the next (final?) book in this series in the future. It would be good to see how things proceed from the cliffhanger ending.
Nikki Kelly sure knows how to pull at the heart strings. Gabriel picked up right where we left off with Lailah and reading about how she didn't remember Jonah was heartbreaking. Lailah definitely went through some character development in this book and I really appreciated that. However there were times where I wanted to go inside the book grab her by shoulders and shake some sense into her. It really bothered me that she wouldn't drink blood even though she knew it was killing her. In the end she was able to embrace the darkness and live for herself and not for Gabriel. We got to see a new side of Gabriel in this book...and it was an annoying side. The fact that he couldn't love her darkness and didn't want her drink blood made me angry. JONAH my sweet boy has finally got the girl (sort of...) okay maybe not at this moment but I'm rooting for them anyway. Also now that Gabriel's fallen what does that mean for Ruadhan? Being a fallen angel means that the angel has no powers left right? How is Ruadhan going to be released from darkness and into the light when he dies? This book has made me so excited to read Jonah I can't wait to see what Nikki Kelly has in store for us. I will be eagerly anticipating the next book to this series.
I struggled with this book pretty much the whole time. It wasn't that the book was terrible.. because it wasn't I just hate Gabriel. I hated that he made Lailah ashamed of a part of herself. And I also hated all the secretive crap he was always doing. I don't understand why he couldn't tell her any of what he did. It never made any sense to me. Liars are not cool. But then Lailah lied to him a lot too I guess. The whole love triangle was just messed up.
I can't really write a full review because all I want to talk about is the ending.. and obviously I won't do that. But I will repeat What the hell ? I almost put the book down so many time and I am glad I didn't just because of the ending. It has been a long while since I have had to go back and re read an ending so many times. I still don't think I fully understand her reasoning. I don't think I ever will. I.. Just.. Don't.
Lailah finally chooses to embrace both! At the end of Lailah I was on the fence about who to ship Gabriel or Jonah, but this book seriously set me straight. Jonah has this huge heart, that he tries to deny having, and love Lailah for who she is, not who he thinks he can make her. I understand Gabriel is made in light and that Lailah is supposed to be his other half but he is not accepting. I love that Lailah takes charge of her own fate and does not just choose Gabriel because that is fate. Finally a female character that chooses her own destiny! (not to mention the totally hot Jonah although I don't know how I can consider a character I have never seen hot but what ever) Gabriel went from the caring angel to the overbearing boyfriend that would not let her be who she is meant to be, which ends up almost killing her. I cannot wait for Jonah!!!
Book 2 of the Styclar Saga, this one picks up immediately after Lailah ends. She's revived maybe she can finally be with Gabriel, but she's so conflicted over her feelings for him and Jonah. She's also having trouble dealing with the fact that she's angel AND vampire.
Fans of the series will want (need!) this book and book #3 (Jonah, of course), but I found the story convoluted and confusing at times. There are SO many characters! I finally gave up about page 125. From the other reviews, there's an amazing/shocking cliffhanger ending, but I just didn't care enough to finish. Maybe I'm just over interspecies love triangles. I will, however, order book 3 for my library. Fans of paranormal romance will demand it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Feiwel and Friends for the arc of Gabriel by Nikki Kelly. Gabriel is the second book in the Styclar saga and it is a mix of science fiction, supernatural and fantasy. The author seamlessly recaps the happenings in the first book of the series, Lailah. Lailah continues to struggle with her identity, mostly for Gabriel's sake. She also uncovers more of the crystal mystery. The ending left me feeling as though a third book is in the Styclar future and all I can say without giving anything away is, "Jonah!"
After the events of the first book, Lailah tries to find more about herself, her powers and discover more about her feelings for Gabriel and for Jonah too. Although I am not usually the type to root for love triangles, this one kind of worked for me in a way that reminded me of the "Infernal Devices" by Cassandra Clare. I'll still be rooting for Gabriel that's for sure. He is the most patient character I've ever seen in a YA novel!
I enjoyed the first book when it came out, but this one has just been terribly dull. If I'm more than 200 pages into a book, I feel like something should have happened to advance the plot, not just "Lailah is sick. Lailah is scared. Boys fight." It's not entertaining, and I no longer care.
I liked this second book a lot better than the first. The plot was so much more interesting and the twists and turns were lovely. What would have made it better, you may ask? If its namesake was not in the book. I tolerated Gabriel in the first book, but he was nearly sufferable here. I hope to see less of him in the third book.
I was gifted this arc by the wonderfully talented author Nikki Kelly for a honest review. this book is jam packed with action, adventure, and love. the characters are well written. the story pulls you in from the very first page. Hold on tight and enjoy the ride that is Gabriel!.
