Devil's Deal

Rate this book
Attorney Juliana Martin is on the run after a battalion of cops armed with warrants swarm the family firm. When the law catches up with her, they offer an impossible choice. She can partner with the FBI to set up and betray a client or she can watch her father go down for capital murder.

For Special Agent Ethan Price, this mission is his ticket out of Texas and an escape from the train wreck of his personal life. With his brooding good looks and Springsteen smile, this assignment seemed easy enough on paper: get the money, get the client, and maybe even get the girl.

What they didn’t know is they were burned before they’d even put Dallas in the rear view mirror.

If I was better at writing reviews, I could do this book some of the justice it deserves. Juliana is as kick ass as they come. The characters are flawless & the story flow is even better. Short chapters kept me up well past what I would have normally read in a night. Perfect blend of everything. Rich lawyer, guns & gore, & a smidge of romance. Not much more to say except go read it. Perfect ending was seeing there was going to be a number 2. I hope there is a 3 & 4!

Devil's Deal was fantastic!!!!!
I did not want to put it down.
The pace, the story line, the characters were perfect. I don't mean to sound so shocked, I have read other work by Terri Lynn Coop that I enjoyed, but this novel was as close to perfect as it can get. The story had excellent twists and turns, realistic legal procedures (you peek behind the lawyer curtain), and just enough weapons tech to make you drool. I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but I will say that you will fall in love with the feisty main character, Juliana Martin. And Ethan Price? Yes. Definitely yes.
Coop's style is on par with the greats in the thriller/mystery genre; Lee Child, Michael Connolly, David Baldacci, and the best parts of Sue Grafton.
I am thrilled there is a second book coming in this series.

Heroine Juliana Martin is the type of attorney who holds no punches, literally. She's a tomboy with a soft side who's not afraid to knock a perp on his ass for looking at her wrongly.

A lawyer, a lover, a daughter, and a rebel with a crazy streak, Martin makes for a very good protagonist, because she is anything but predictable.

This is not your normal "female author" book. This one will be enjoyed by readers who prefer a little rough to their tumble, and holds its own with competition in the action genre.

"Devil's Deal" is one surprise after another. I won't go into the twists and turns, but let's just say you'll need to read to the end to figure it out.

Definitely an excellent start to the series. An action packed thriller in the vein of classic Grisham, Coop will have you burning through the pages to see what happens next.

Juliana (Jewel) Martin is the daughter of a well-heeled lawyer father, a well-heeled lawyer herself, and part of his firm., who specializes in pulling irons out of fires. His high-end clients are shady, but rich. She has a successful history with the firm, with powerful clients in her debt. Dad finally crosses a line and the Feds shut him down, but not to get to him, but for other reasons I won't disclose lest I be accused of despoiling the plot. Dad's circumstances force Jewel to hook up with Ethan Price, FBI agent extraordinaire and extremely desirable...ummm...partner, with the two of them concurrently working on Jewel's paternal problems, while working against each other in a greater bid to...well, again that would be divulging more than I should. Bad guys, good guys, it's hard to figure out which is which, but that makes for a thrilling ride across the Texan landscape, bother literally and figuratively, culminating in an explosively satisfying resolution.

While reading this I alternated with anywhere from three to five stars, depending on where I was in the book. For instance, when the repartee got so indecipherable due to the snappy dialogue and elusive slang references, I simply scratched my head. But eventually I was won over by the writing, and chalked the problem up to the fact that I'm not from Texas, and could figure it all out from context. In the end I was glad I read it to the end, and seeing that it's the beginning of a series made me happy. So, four stars....

Fun read with a sexy, sassy, smart heroine, and an even better FBI Agent, hero. Jewel (Juliana) Martin, has it all, she's a super-lawyer in her father's firm defending clients that are of the criminal element, one's first reaction would be to wash one's hands when coming in contact with some of the unsavory characters. As with all good mysteries, her world comes crashing down around her when her father, Tommy Martin, is arrested for the murder of a dancer/call girl and RICO corruption, and Jewel is on the run because they want to question her.

There is plenty of excitement between her and the FBI Agent, Ethan Price, who is assigned to be her watchdog/handler, and let's not forget the outlaw motorcycle gang that consider her an unofficial member and come to he rescue more than once.

Supposedly, her father's client is involved in illegal mining and smuggling trade out of the Democratic Republic of Congo which adds a dangerous element to the mix. The story begs to follow the trail of the illicit trade from Africa to the Middle East, but unfortunately the story never leaves Texas.

I had to suspend my belief quite a bit in order to follow the story. However, the snarky characters, and their relationship each other managed to carry me through. And then there was the Chihuahua, Simon (I have a soft spot for Chihuahuas) helped make it a lot more fun.

Five stars for Ms. Coop. The author created two unforgettable characters, one who I'd like to be and one whom I'd like to date.

Ethan embodies several good men in my life: ex-military, law enforcement, and fierce determination. He's a man who handles surprises well.

Jewel--She's dedicated, imperfect, and adaptable. And thin. Not too mention she meets Ethan's fierceness with her own.

Ms. Coop hit the floor running with her plot, and she didn't let up. This book went from first gear to the highest gear and stayed there.

Many authors are unidirectional in their plot, either plot driven or character driven. This author's work has a good balance of both. Kudos to Terri Lynn Coop for this novel. Can't wait for RIDE THE LIGHTNING.
