As a life-long Clevelander, and a "Schvitzie" (a person that had enjoyed many trips to the Schvitz), I absolutely loved this book. I have shared so many of the remembrances that are written about in this book, especially my memories of my first trip there as a young man. It is very cool to know that the Schvitz is still going strong and I'm determined to get in touch with some of my old Schvitz pals and get back there this year. Womack did a great job of covering the history, the honesty, and the fun of this Cleveland landmark.
I read it in a weekend. Light, funny stories and historical facts about an underground health club. The author describes the neighborhood ranges from "horrible" to "dangerous". I prefer the term "economically depressed" ever since my words in an online forum about an Idora Park neighborhood offended someone. The treasure inside the building is a beloved culture and tradition spanning nearly 100 years. I just might accept an invite.
I can’t be the only one who’s ever been curious about this place lol I’m a little disappointed there weren’t more *spicy* stories from happenings here, but I did appreciate the insight into what really goes down here. I loved the history of immigrants and bathhouses in Cleveland. Maybe someday I’ll try out “schvitzing” for myself lol
