When seventeen-year-old Pala de la Croix and her escort team are deployed to a newly discovered planet, their routine exploration quickly changes to a survival mission. After being targeted by their own weaponry and an unknown virus, the rangers and scientists attempt to make their way back to base camp safely.

While Pala tries to unravel the motivation behind the attack, she also has to come to terms with the possible betrayal of her boyfriend and fellow Cadet Marshal, Cabot Isberg. In her search for the source of the deception, she’ll discover that not only is intelligent life present on Colossus, but the planet itself may be more valuable than she was led to believe.

In this defining journey, Pala learns how little value is placed on the loss of life. And fighting to protect one planet may cost her refuge on the other.

I just finished Sentient, and I can't wait for the sequel. It is a science fiction/military story with realistic characters whom you get to know gradually through some very interesting situations. The ideas about technology at the time are also fresh and new, not thinly disguised Star Trek references. Yes, it's a teen book, but I found it to be an enjoyable read. Now the author needs to hurry up and write the next one for me.

I loved the characters, particularly I really liked Pala. The story was gripping - to the point I didn't want to put it down. I would strongly recommend this book to young adults and older. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.

The action starts off quickly in this military sci-fi novel, in what was supposed to be a routine exercise where a bunch of cadets provide escort and protection for a scientific team on a newly-discovered planet, but the situation goes south fast, with cadets and scientists coming under fire from the mission's own drones, then dealing with other unexpected factors, such as a deadly virus and an unknown, primitive but sentient species of natives.

17-year-old Pala de al Croix undergoes a trial of fire as she keeps order, gets her people to safety, and tries to figure out who has set them up to die and why, all the while haunted by the possibility that one the people closest to her might be a traitor.

The author adds another interesting element with the occasional short flashback chapter set prior to the mission, focusing on the conspirators and why the mission was set up.

I hesitate to reveal more without spoiling, but if you wan't a fast-paced story heavy on detailing procedures for exploring and surviving on an alien world, this is one to check out.

The only downside is the age of the characters made it suggestive of YA fiction to me, which isn't usually my genre of choice.
