At least, I hoped I'd never have to leave the mortal realm ever again. But Romeo is missing, and I have to find him. I know who took him, and I know why.
And I know how hard this fight is going to be.
I survived this wild-magic place once before, and I'll do it again. But this time, I'm not a scared little girl.
This time, I know exactly what I'm doing.
Let the games begin.
The Wolf Vs The Shadow Fae is book five in the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth, a hot new Urban Fantasy series by bestselling author Lauretta Hignett.
A raving fangirl for all things paranormal, supernatural, supernormal and fantastical, Lauretta writes fun Urban Fantasy, PNR and Superhero adventures with a dash of sweet romance and humour.
She's a massive fan of Young and New Adult fiction, loves a plot twist, hates cliffhangers, and always keeps her readers on their toes.
When she's not writing, Lauretta enjoys fad diets, sunshine, her two little children, weird craft projects and massive amounts of dark chocolate
What a book, what a freaking series! Once again Ms Hignett uppes the ante bringing tension, excitement and her own brand of insane humour into what I can only describe as the ride of my life. Every time I dive into one of this authors books I'm taken on a rollercoaster of emotions that stay with me long after I turn the last page, never for one second knowing where I'll end up, but loving every second of it. I always know that somehow, someway that Lauretta will find a way to surprise, shock and leave me in open mouthed wonder at the story she puts on the page, and in awe of her exceptional writing skills. Yes, I laughed, I cried (with a smile on my face) and I might of even gagged a little, with an image I'm never gonna erase from my mind but with storytelling as golden as this, all I'm left with is wanting more.
I've loved Daphne ever since I met her in Chloe's series, and with each book I find myself falling for her just that little bit more. I mean what not to adore about a character who's inner voice is actually a separate entity due to her rather unusual childhood. Knowing that she needs to go back to faerie to save the love of her life Romeo after he's been abducted, she has no idea what she will find when she gets there. Needing to get into the city as it locked down because of the upcoming Bride trials, Daphne hunts down a former master of hers to help her get inside. But here's the catch, she can only do so if she enters herself. Pegged as the underdog Daphne will do what ever it takes to get Romeo back and these trials aren't for the faint hearted. And HOO BOY, believe me when I say these other contestants are off the charts cray cray. But nobody does unhinged better than our Daphne (along with Brain Daphne who's is in absolute top form) and a few bloodthirsty fae princesses aren't going to stop her from achieving her goal and proving to them along the way that they've possibly met their match. Yes this is Daphne at her best and she's incredible....
Romeo is as ever the charmingly gorgeous book boyfriend I can't stop myself from being in love with. Working on his own plan to get home and back to Daphne, he's equal parts shocked but not surprised to find her turn up to rescue him. I absolutely adore these two together as their love is so enchanting, magical and endearing it literally makes my heart melt everytime.
Brackin Pesh, slimeball extraordinaire and Daphne's former master has an outlandish dress sense, but is weirdly likeable. Sure he has some questionable traits but I couldn't help but find him funny in spite of those. And by the end of the book I had a small amount of respect for him hoping that he'll turn up in the next installment.
And lastly Dwayne my glorious murder goose who is an absolute iconic character that I can't get enough of. Just when I believe there are lines he won't cross, he goes one better and pole vaults clear over it. Leaving me in hysterical fits of laughter, while holding my head in my hands shuddering with his shenanigans.
One of my favourite books to date, Lauretta really has out done herself as this series just gets better and better. And after that cliffhanger, all I can say is damn! Absolutely extraordinary 10/10 highly recommend 😁
OHMIGOD this was FABULOUS!! So. Much. Fun. I got it late last night and stayed up half the night reading it, I couldn't go to sleep til the very last word!
Okay, Myf is really getting on my nerves. I mean, I know she's a teenager, and I know her angst is real, but geez. Daphne is really trying and it's not fair for her to blame Daphne, and to... oh... wait... I can't say because (spoiler). The whole pizza trap thing was HILARIOUS! I've always adored the Countess, and where in the world did the author come up with that name Ebadorathea? I really liked Ember, she really did remind me so much of Daphne in her earlier days, so suffice it to say, I was VERY disappointed in her. And don't get me started on Dwayne and his newest conquest, I wasn't sure whether to laugh or facepalm!
There's a lot more I could talk about, but can't because (spoilers!). Suffice it to say, this book is a MUST READ!!!
Oh, and I'm still waiting to see Judy get her comeuppance....
Amazing! Amusing! Astonishing! Animalistic (supernatural animals ~ lol) Book 6 in The Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth Series begins with our heroine, the delightful Daphne, on a welfare check for a witch's foster children. Is he a good witch or a bad witch? Something smells fishy, and Daphne sniffs out the situation! Brain Daphne/Heart Daphne are struggling with their rage at the Shadow Fae who have kidnapped Romeo. All her besties tell her to wait, they're working on solutions, and bribing her with pizza, but she needs to go NOW! Traumas from her years in the Fae realm still haunt her, but for Romeo, she faces her fears. The Magic is wild; the Fae are formidable; the Weather is Scorching; the Trials are Murderous, and all stand between her and her man. Of course, Dwayne, the Gorgeous Goose God of Chaos, accompanies her, but he typically has an erotic side agenda. I love Lauretta's awesome powers to create characters that transform from evil to endearing and vice versa at the turn of a page or just a blink of the eye! Laughing and sobbing until 3 am is a habit with a Hignett novel. 5 Stars to infinity and beyond! Arc read
This author has probably become one of my top 20 favorite authors, and every time I read a book by her, it just solidifies my reasons. This is the seventh book in the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth, and it’s probably my favorite of the series so far…and yes, there’s going to be another book!!! (Can’t you tell I’m so darn excited!?!?) Anyway, poor Daphne has to face so much in this book, including trying to rescue Romeo and facing her past. There are Bridal Trials in this one, and I must admit when Daphne joined them, I was expecting the same things I was used to in romantasy (which I like but isn’t an aboslute favorite). However, I should have trusted this author and known she would put her own unique spin on this as she does everything. Loved this latest, and I’m more than ready for a lot more (please, please, please?!?). Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Gosh does Lauretta's writing ooze with flair for the dramatic, enticingly so and she has the skill and knowwithall to encase the dramatic in oodles of humour, to offset the darkness with the comical in a very enticing and unexpected way. I'm not even sure WHERE to begin capturing my thoughts, this book furthered my obsession with Daphne and Romeo, this book further entrenched my adoration of all things Lauretta....
Daphne needs to find a way to save Romeo from his abductors. But that means travelling to the realm of the Fae, something she really didn't think she'd ever do again but her love for Romeo is all encompassing, she'd go to the very underworld for him. With Dwayne in toe, she enters a world she'd left years ago, right into a deadly scenario. Enlisting Brackin, a former "master" and sleezeball, she enters the city as a candidate for the Bride trials about to begin. Oh heavens does Lauretta bring this court to life! Or perhaps I should say, to death! With each contestant vying for the Prince's hand, at ANY cost, Daphne's savvy and "world wise" experience comes in very handy. Gosh are these princesses bloodthirsty! One of them, young Ember reminded me soooooo much of young Daphne, sweet, a bit unhinged and deadly as heck and she too evoked the same raw feelings of sympathy I had felt for young Daphne. Ember is volatile, a child seemingly out of her depth, a little...ok...a lot unhinged, gregarious, exuberant, lively, soooooo likeable.
Daphne has captured my heart from the first time I met her, I carry a piece of her in MY heart. I cried with joy when Daphne had her eureka moment, when she acknowledged all of her memories, they shaped her, made her who she is and she finally got to get rid of the doubt plaging her, relinquish the guilt crippling her and embracing HER. I loved how well the author did this, with huge sensitivity, never once renaging on all Daphne had been through, which was horrifying. She's caring, she's sworn to help all those she can, and she does, even sometimes in detriment to herself. Oh gosh do I adore her! She's everything I want to be when I go up, minus the killing streak.... And Romeo, the ultimate book boyfriend, the ultimate nice guy, is caught between a rock and a hard place. So ok, he's been abducted and was trying to find a way home, a way back to Daphne and then she appears right where she shouldn't be. These 2 together make my heart flutter like a teenager, I feel all gooey inside at their love the one another. Lauretta encapsulates the purity of their love, she gives it such depth and beauty. She gives them a realness, a fullness, a sense of right for each other, wrapping them up in a stunning package of passion, of a bond that's infinitely wound around them like the tightest coil.
So the trials begin and Daphne did them all Daphne style, a bit of bravado, a lot of listening, and winning people on her side, the underdog who wasn't expected to last the first night, showed them all good! Even cowardly Brackin joined "her camp" he certainly joined mine, each page had me liking him more and more and this is how easily this author dupes me. His words to Daphne installed a warmth in my soul because of how true they are, "You have hope, you ARE hope, you will save us all". Lauretta takes those that appear shady, those I dislike, and gives me more. She infuses the characters with a resonance, a luminosity that shines through all the c*ap. And that scene with the Golden Stag, oh my word, I was jumping up and down in excitement! Genius move! So much action, so many unexpected challenges, my heart was pounding out of sync from the adrenaline!
I had to laugh at Dwayne's unorthodox approach to everything. I do so adore Dwayne, his one of a kind amazing, and protective and loyal and immensely hilarious. I thought some of Dwayne's...ummm... shenanigans were eeeewew hilarious but lord Brackin takes THAT trophy! I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cringe at the explicit image Lauretta put in my head... I'm not sure I can look at a feather with a straight face ever again...😁 Be THAT as it may, this entire read, and indeed, series, set everything inside me on alert, thrilled me, captured every ioto of my being, the excitement I experienced reading this book, brought ME to the point of "le petite mort"....
This is by no means a simple tale, heck, nothing Daphne is ever simple but besides the trials, there's a huge mystery to solve, a mystery that's literally scorching people and land alike. Ms Hignett keeps the pressure up, she keeps the world actively exciting, terrifyingly so at times, infused with her special brand of humour to take the edge off, that, honest to goodness, I couldn't tear myself away from this read! As I said at the beginning, there are a zillion pings coursing through my thoughts, event after event that shattered my very equilibrium, I'm gaping, I'm smiling, I'm laughing, I'm truly in awe of this author! She takes each book she writes and tosses it around in a spinning cauldron, superbly, sublimely, bringing consumate, rapturous, splendour to my core. With every twist, with every turn of her plot, I'm left speechless by the unforeseen. A stellar read and boy oh boy, the moves, the plot, wow! Just wow! Those twists Ms Hignett pulled! I never saw them coming...and that ending? Oh heck!!!! That's all I'm going to say!
The Wolf Vs The Shadow Fae picks up right after the cliffhanger ending of the last book where Prince Romeo had been kidnapped by the fae back to their Realm. Purposes unknown.
There’s elements I enjoyed here and others I find that are either getting annoying, underdeveloped, or left dangling, without any explanation.
Let’s take the things that are working against the storytelling for me. This is the sixth book and it’s very “talky” as opposed to action driven. Things are talked about endlessly. Especially when it’s the main character of wolf shifter Daphne. Daphne’s been through years of time traveling abusive experiences as an adolescent to adulthood, slavery etc. Through alien worlds and realms. What she did to survive has shattered her personality into two parts, brain and heart. They are constantly talking or arguing about everything. Every single situation. Plus she’s got a Pandora’s box or world of evil inside of her.
But it’s mainly the two voices. They talk so much she gets nothing accomplished. Which is the point made here. But it’s just as annoying to read. Because while she’s not actively going forward, the whole narrative is standing still too. While it’s talking.
There’s good points made about how they should have recombined into one a while ago, but still not happening.
Then there’s a really great case that opens the book. One where Daphne rescues two young kids. And it’s centered around one coven and family of powerful witches. A big event happens at the end of the case that’s dropped. We have no mention about it and the ramifications of the case. Nothing. Sigh.
Last big issue I’ll bring up is that Daphne’s horrific history in the Fae realm isn’t consistent with her current experiences here. I understand parts of the Fae situation changed, still there should be more representation of that dark history than what is seen here.
Positives. The cases and revelations concerning Romeo’s background. Daphne’s interactions with the other participants in the Bride races as well as the brutal races themselves.
Those were exciting moments.
Still enjoyable but I’m not as engaged as I was at the beginning.

Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth: The Wolf Vs The Vampire #1 The Wolf Vs The Warlock #2 The Wolf Vs The Shifter #3 The Wolf Vs The Witch #4 The Wolf Vs The Monster #5 The Wolf Vs The Shadow Fae #6 The Wolf Vs The Dragon #7 - Sept 15,2025
The sixth installment in the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth series did not disappoint. In fact, it led to a night of no sleep, trying to keep the chuckles to a low decibel, so I would not wake the bear sleeping beside me, and a realization that I might need therapy when we reach the conclusion of Daphnes story, as I know the pain from parting with these characters is going to leave a huge, chaotic goose sized hole in my heart. I really and truly don’t want this series to ever end.
We get started with Daphne working on a plan to go rescue Romeo from the Fae who abducted him. Even after all that she had previously experienced in the realm, nothing would stop her from doing whatever it took to bring him home. When she gets to Faerie with the help of an old friend and the fabulous Countess (you could never make me hate our gangbanger tattooed, cocktail loving, cannibal) Daphne wrestles with accepting her past and who she truly is, with Brain Daphne and Heart Daphne coming to a new understanding.
The path to saving Romeo is full of action and adventure with plenty of unruly, ridiculously entertaining moments. Daphne enlists a former sleazy master of hers, Brackin, who helps her to enter the Bridal trials to get close to Romeo, who she finds out is the prize. Now I thought I would really dislike this character, but he grew on me as we really got to know him. The trials themselves are something you have to experience for yourself. Murderous, back-stabbing brides in ball gowns are all competing for Romeo's hand in marriage and pretty much nothing is off limits.
There is so much going on in this book. We learn about Romeo's backstory (as does he), Myf is being a down right unappreciative brat, Dwayne is on a mission of his own and just when you think he couldn’t get any more outrageous, he manages to tickle someone’s fancy (cough, cough) while exacting some romantic revenge. There are side plots and political intrigue galore.
In true Lauretta form, she takes us on a hell of a wild ride, with twists and turns woven together with her incredible humour and sprinkled with a deep understanding of the human psyche. As far as Urban Fantasy authors go, Lauretta Hignett is undoubtedly one of the elite with her original brand of storytelling.
Lauretta Hignett has definitely earned a high position on my favourite author list. Her style of writing is perfection for an urban fantasty reader. Her main characters are always so likeable, (if not outright loveable) that you can’t help but want life to go their way.
The latest book in this series was always going to get off to an emotional start, as we knew that Romeo had disappeared and been taken to Fae. We also knew that Daphne would go to find him, no matter how much she had hated her time lost in Fae.
There is no way that you could anticipate just what could happen over the course of this book, as Daphne and Dwayne set off on their rescue attempt. We discover much more about Romeo and his background. We see Daphne accept her past and who she is, gaining so much confidence and self belief. We see Dwayne being…well, Dwayne! But who can possibly fault him in his chaotic path to helping and protecting Daphne, while also satisfying his desires? ;)
Daphne coerces a Fae Lord from her past into helping her, and we see a great deal of his character over the course of the book. His character is developed in such a way that both we, and Daphne, get to know him as someone with much more depth than expected.
I love the way that Lauretta fleshes out and develops even more minor characters, so that they remain more than just a side note of her books. As Daphne takes part in the Bride Trials, we get to see different facets of her fellow competitors, as well as understanding the motivations of Romeo’s family. The trials themselves - well, they provide danger, mystery and some very funny moments too. I’m torn between 2 comedy gold segments in this book, but it’ll come as no surprise that one of them belongs to Dwayne.
I love the way this book has unfolded, leading you along unexpected paths, giving you concern, laughter, satisfaction, nail biting moments, aww moments, pride (in Daphne) and then…an ending that sweeps you back off of your feet and makes you beg for the next book to come as quickly as possible!
Another amazing book in this series! Romeo is still missing and Daphne is determined to go after him. Everyone is still underestimating Daphne and telling her not to go to Faerie after him, but she knows she needs to go when the Oracle tells her she must before he destroys the entire realm. So Daphne and Dwayne go to Faerie, each with their own mission (oh Dwayne lol). Daphne will be faced old enemies and new as she must compete in deadly trials to try to get Romeo back to their own realm. Daphne has such a good heart after everything she has been through. She is still trying to see the best in everyone even when it is a group of noble fae women trying to compete to win the hand of the Shadow Prince. Luckily she still has Brain-Daphne and they are finally starting to agree again! And Daphne had me cracking up again during this book! Just wait until you get to the talent competition! We don't get as much with Romeo in this book since Daphne is searching for him but we do get Dwayne! Just when I think there is nothing Dwayne can do that will surprise me, BOY AM I WRONG! That goose makes me laugh so much. There is tons of laughs, epiphanies, action and fae political intrigue in this book. And while I had part of the end figured out, there was another part that I could have slapped my own forehead for not figuring out! Once again there is never a dull moment, and you will be on the edge of your seat and unable to put this book down. And that ending - I did not see that coming either! Talk about cliffhanger! If you love stabby FMC's, this book (and series) is for you! If you haven't started this series yet, I highly recommend it! For some reason I thought this was going to be the last book in the series but I am so glad that it is not and there will more Daphne and Dwayne!
I was waiting impatiently for this book but it was definitely worth the wait. Each book in this series just gets better and better. Romeo has been kidnapped and taken to Fae; Daphne is determined to rescue him. She will have to go by herself, everyone else feels she wouldn’t be able to help. What they don’t know is that she spent many years in Fae when she was a lost child. Arriving in Fae, she finds there is a bride trial to see who will be marrying Romeo so naturally she joins the trial, an underdog and an embarrassment to all. Surprise. There is also a danger to the land, the Scourge which is burning everything in its path. While figuring out the trials, Daphne is also trying to find out the source of the Scourge. This book has a great adventure, all the different trial where everyone is trying to kill everyone. The different trials are exciting and Daphne’s solution to most of them is fantastic. The different princesses involved are not nice people. There is action, a bit of a mystery, wonderful characters, romance and humour. Again, Dwayne is the best, his attitudes, actions and determination to find a romantic partner made me laugh out loud at times. I would recommend this book absolutely to everyone. I absolutely love this series. Now comes the long wait but I know it will be worth it.
I love this series, and Lauretta’s writing style, more than I can express in words. She never fails to deliver, just goes from strength to strength. Daphne’s emotional journey and development is again amazing, the beauty of her love of Romeo, and his in return gives me the warm fuzzies. b!Between the angsty, agonising bouts of fear and sense of urgency, there is still romance, affection, humour and above all hope.
Returning to faerie to rescue Romeo was always going to be an interesting adventure, but there is some hilarious moments amongst the trials, and not to mention Dwayne’s usual antics - to avoid spoilers I will just say there is a line right near the end that made me guffaw, seriously that is the only way to described the noise I made… hint, it starts with “stop fingering….” Anyone who has not read this series, and all the others set in this world that came before it, is really missing out! As always I can barely keep it together waiting for the next book! 5 🌟 just isn’t enough, it is a 10 for sure.
This book like it's predecessors is exceptionally hard to put down. Daphne is struggling as Romeo is in Faerie and no one one is helping her come to his rescue. Daphne the magnificent multitasker manages her internal dialogue with the help of imaginary mobile phone conversations. I love the characters that helps carry the story. Countess Ebadorathea comes to the rescue with a world key and a well placed wood fired pizza. It's the little things that sing, like the Brownie Stevens penchant for turning dried vegetable peels in to a stunning couture gown. And who could forget Lady Bork an orgress that is a surprise entrant into the bridal games.
One of the most amusing scenes is a talent trial where Daphne in true Australian tradition break dances much to the surprise and horror of the other brides and the audience.
Lauretta is a spinner of tales of the highest order she combines peril, humour and bawdiness in the right proportions to keep her readers begging for more. Roll on book 7!
Absolutely incredible! This book was soooo good. Like amazing. 111/10. Can't sling enough praise in Lauretta Highnett's direction to even come close. I read it in one go and could not [and would not] put it down until it was done.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I seriously don't know how each book can be better than the one before it, but here we are. Daphne's an amazing main character, and I completely love this whole world.
These books are perfect. They are exciting, fun, hilarious, heart-warming, thrilling, full of good, bad, scary adventures and characters, lessons to be learned, and so much more.
It's so easy to fall right into this universe because the writing just pulls you in. There are very few imaginary worlds that feel this real, and this is one of them.
✔️ Action-packed ✔️ Easy to read ✔️ Entertaining ✔️ Hilarious ✔️ Great world building ✔️ Original ✔️ Page-turner ✔️ Wonderful characters
Lauretta hits the mark with this book. I didn't think this series could get any better, but OMG was I wrong. This book had me crying with laughter quite a lot 🤣🤣 Especially because of the lavender handkerchiefs 🤣🤣🤣 It also shows the lengths that our wonderful heroine Daphne will go for her lover Romeo ❤️ This is definitely a book you do not want to miss. Even if you just want to see what Dwayne is getting up to 🪿 and let me tell you, you won't be disappointed 🤣🤣 He is a menace at the best of times, and this is definitely not a good time 🤭 If you are considering reading this book as a first read, my advice would be to read the rest of the series first. That way you will get to know the characters stories, so it won't be so confusing to you. This series is absolutely amazing 🥰 I love how Lauretta writes ✍️ from the start she draws you in and you end up binge reading the whole book before you even know it ❤️
Daphne has waited two weeks to go rescue Romeo. However, when she crosses into the fae realms she encounters a few issues: Dwayne is only coming with her to seduce the Winter Queen, her only way to where Romeo is held is to team up with one of her former captors, and she's entered the Bride Trials for Romeo's hand in marriage (which is typically to the death). Oh, and there's something called The Scorch which has destabilised the balance in Faerie. No big deal to handle all that right?
This book was a delight! Dwayne is, of course, always excellent but my favourite part was just watching Daphne learn to trust all aspects of herself as a whole. Her traumatising everyone around her at the Bride Trials (iykyk re: the talent show) was an utter delight.
Round 6.... and Laurette has done it again! i'm KO'd!
well it should be no surprise that the next installment on the crazy train adventures of Daphne is very very very good! (did you see there were 3 very's in there).
No spoilers cos I dont want to ruin the fun for anyone, however what i will say is that with the end of book 5 Romeo was whisked away to Faerie.... now we all know that no-one is going to keep Daphne from her man and she will do everything in her power to get to him.
The adventures that follow can only be described as beautiful carnage... expect blood, guts, knives, feathers (iykyk), magic, spells and lovely lady from the DMV.
So what are you waiting for?!
another funny, gorey, violent masterpiece, you just can't go wrong with Lauretta!
When Romeo is kidnapped, Daphne knows who did it, the only problem is getting to the Fae realm, and finding him there. She knows the place, she knows the people, she was trapped there for years. But no one will help her get there.
I won't give anything away, because this one is convoluted and being in Faerie is so much fun for readers. Just read this series, sit back and enjoy Dwayne's twisted antics, and Daphne's realizations about herself as she kicks ass.
She's always underestimated, luckily for her, that gives her an edge!
Just read it, this is one fun, fast moving, and hilarious book!
The funniest, goriest and randomest series ever written! A fae tournament like you've never seen! Freaky fetishes galore!
Anyone who has read Lauretta Hignett before knows what to expect, and this instalment is more glorious than any that have come before.
The plot is crammed full of excitement, fighting, quests, mystery and humour, as fierce social worker Daphne heads out to rescue her incredibly hot and powerful boyfriend, and murder goose Dwayne heads out to... do something else.
Screamingly funny novel from the goddess of Urban Fantasy. Get it!
What a book! Daphne is a loose cannon and off to save Romeo on her own, well with Dwayne but sometimes he can be more hindrance than help and not without his own agenda, which in this case is petty, hilarious and I'm fully supportive of! The Countess steps in first to make sure the whole thing isn’t a complete disaster. There are lots of new characters in this book as Daphne goes to Fae to get Romeo back and they all want to kill her. Each chapter is a wild ride, I can’t wait to see how the rest of the series unfolds after THAT mic drop ending!
Lauretta does it again. The way the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth books always have me breaking and being put back together, while laughing the entire time. Book 6 is no exception, keeping me on my toes and unable to put the book down. The Heroine is intelligent & passionate. Taking every new obstacle, and cultural expectation, in stride. You’ll find everything you need in the pages of this book; a strong woman lead, Dwayne 🖤, magic, drama, petty wins, thought out and strong wins, and twists you never expected.
This book is amazing–no surprise, as all of Lauretta Hignett’s books are amazing–and was so much fun to read. I have come to realize that if I am in a book slump, Hignett is one of the very few authors that pull me out of it. I love her rich, chicky narrative, the diverse, well written characters, and the story that pulls you in and keeps you turning the pages. I strongly recommend this, and all of her books. Can’t wait to read the next book.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Holy cow, this book was a wild ride! Daphne is headed to Faerie to bring Romeo back home, and gets herself in all kinds of trouble! Good thing Dwayne, who has his own mission to Faerie, is by her side. Well some of the time ;).
I loved all the ups and downs, the mystery, the crazy antics Dwayne is always up to, and of course, I love the growth that Daphne gains. And again the ending!!! I am so excited for the next book!
I love this series so much. The characters are all the same but there’s a very different vibe going on in this one. As it says itself, there’s a The Batchelor crossed with The Hunger Games thing happening. Quite an entertaining trope in itself but add in Daphne and her quirky and unique way of handling life and you don’t quite know what you’re going to get.
With the same humour, action, banter and sheer craziness as usual. So satisfying and loved it.
The Wolf and the Shadow Fae: Side splitting, hair raising, lots of undignified snorts of laughter, action packed, a roller coaster of twists and turns, and finally a WTF! I did not see that coming finale. Chloe's a hot mess without Romeo. Dwayne... Should be renamed God of Deranged, because wow!
I absolutely tore through this latest masterpiece from Lauretta Hignett. Who needs sleep anyway...
Hignett has written several series in the same universe, all are worth a read, different spin and protagonists, but the same humor, interesting plots and person gallery! The series are having paralell and interacting plots, each book can be read as an own entity, but best read sequentially. I have read them all, most in a day or two, fun reads!
Romeo has been taken and Daphne is sure she knows where he’s been taken to. Having survived Fairie as a child it’s not top of her places to visit but needs must. Heart and Brain reunite as Daphne sets out to bring him home. This book has action and heart, some laugh out loud moments that sneak up on you and it has Dwayne. Threads perfectly interwoven and a joy to read
Daphne‘s boyfriend has been taken to ferry and she is going to go rescue him, but before she can do that, she has to learn some things about herself. The memories that Romeo has taken from her come back to her before she’s gone to ferry and she has to deal with those memories before she can leave. When she does go into ferry, we get a little bit of a idea of what her life was like when she lived there. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.
I love this series. Daphne is such a kickass mc. Dwayne is a delight, twisted but a delight. Still not quite sure where the guys ended up , sounds like they never got their World Key to work, might have to re-read that for clarity. Lots of Action Adventure. Start at the beginning. Read ALL the books. Read about Chloe. Read about Prue. They are all worth the time it takes to get to this one- you can read this first with out reading any of the other books but you will miss subtle context.
Laureate Hignett has another FABULOUS book series!
The Wolf Vs The Shadow Fae, is the latest in The Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth series. The world of Daphne is well drawn without boring, over inflated details. Daphne is hard-core but still caring. Lauretta Hignett has me hanging by a thread, waiting for Daphne's next adventure. I want to be Daphne when I grow up. If you haven't started the series, what are you waiting for? Grab it and enjoy!
worst in the series - the struggle was real, there is so much fluff and nothing really happens until about 65% way through
5 Star - Couldn't put this book down.
