My Own Mr. Darcy

Rate this book
After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth's life changes when Matthew Macfadyen's Mr. Darcy appears on the screen.
Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren't Mr. Darcy enough.
Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she's dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she's forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

So cute!  What Jane Austen obsessed fan hasn't dreamed of having a Mr. Darcy of their own?  This was such an enjoyable read that I highly recommend.

A squeaky clean, sweet read that is perfect for 21st Century Jane Austen lovers like me!  This one goes on my keeper shelf.  I love books that I can recommend without hesitation to anyone be it my teenager, neighbor or grandma.  Even those who have never read Pride and Prejudice or seen the movie (surely there aren't many of you out there!) are sure to enjoy this clean romance.

This is one of the more painful contemporary novels hitching their wagon to the Austen star. In this book the main character, Elizabeth (!) has developed an unhealthy obsession with the Kiera Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice, or more specifically, with the actor Matthew Macfadyen, which she saw when she was 16 years old. She will only consider seriously dating a guy who looks like Macfadyen and acts like he did in P&P. Yes, it's as silly as it sounds.

Eventually (seriously, years after she first develops her obsession) she finds Matt, a guy she thinks will fit the bill, and after she stalks him a while they actually start dating, even though he's really not particularly into her. But meanwhile there's this perfectly kind, handsome, charming, but very unDarcy-like other guy, Chad, who's been falling in love with her. It's sort of a love triangle, except that Matt is so standoffish that you're never really sure he cares much about Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's obsession with finding someone who looked like Macfadyen was over the top and seemed to focus primarily on appearance, combined with a British accent and a dollop of standoffishness. I thought it was way too weak of a hook to hold an entire novel together. Along the same lines, the Matt character needed more charm

Another complaint: The wrap-up of the story was far too abrupt.

Not a book I'm likely to ever re-read, not being into TSTL main characters.

Group read with the Happily Ever After group.

OKAY, I am an oldie so I so LOVED the original P&P.

I originally read Pride and Prejudice when I was 16 at school, I love it.

We had Laurence Oliver as Mr D. Was not too keen on him

We had David Rintoul – I really like him. Have the VHS for that one …

I hear all these young ones saying “What is a VHS?” Ask your parents!!

1995! I used to make sure I was on the sofa on a Sunday night and watched it. Recorded it also on a Video Cassette – watched it again mid week and again on the Friday night before watching it again the following Sunday night. Sad, I know. But we did not have Facebook and Goodreads back then.

Colin Firth was THE ONE!

Have seen the recent film with Matthew McFayden. Did not want to like it but I did….

Actually, now that I look at that gif, he was a bit dopey in the film.

Colin Firth is still my number one for Fitzwilliam Darcy.

I am supposed to be reviewing a book here. I did like the book, it was sweet, and would probably read something from this author in the future.

I've loved Pride and Prejudice for as long as I can remember and I knew that someday I wanted to write something playing off my own love of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. This was so much fun to write. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Elizabeth Barrett is on a search for her own Mr. Darcy. Every time she meets a guy, she instantly decides whether or not he is Mr. Darcy material. If a guy doesn’t fit her predetermined “type,” she dismisses him as a possible future mate and moves on. For the past six years, no man has made it past a first date with Elizabeth, and to appease the growing concern of her roommate and best friend, Janessa, Elizabeth agrees (after serious coercion) to go on ten dates with Chad, a guy she had a pleasant first date with but didn’t want to continue seeing because he was blonde, friendly, disarming, and earns a living as a high school science teacher (ugh! how totally un-Darcy-like!)

But what will Elizabeth think when she starts to enjoy and look forward to her dates with Chad? What will Elizabeth do when Matt Dawson (a wealthy and arrogant McFayden look-alike) walks into her life?

Is aloof and haughty Mr. Darcy what she really wants?

What a fantastic story!! I adored Elizabeth and could easily understand and relate to her situation. I, too, fell in love with Mr. Darcy as a teenager and decided that I wanted to find my own Mr. Darcy and experience a union of “perfect happiness” when I grew up. Unlike Elizabeth though, I wasn’t
so determined on finding someone with the same appearance, mannerisms, and status as Jane Austen’s Mr. Darcy. (Nah, I much prefer the easy-going, fun-loving, affable type…like Mr. Bingley!) Elizabeth, however, wants the whole Darcy-package: tall, dark hair that is slightly disheveled, blue eyes, “gorgeously unpleasant and impatient.”

Elizabeth is an extremely likable heroine full of romantic ideals, sweetness, and integrity. I admire her a lot – how she cares about unintentionally leading someone on, how she doesn’t allow herself to be walked on, how she is a low-maintenance, true to herself, and honest. However, Elizabeth isn’t a perfect heroine, she needs to learn not be so close-minded and quick to judge. Even though I saw the writing on the wall long before Elizabeth in regards to Chad and Matt, I still thoroughly enjoyed witnessing Elizabeth process her new-found awareness, self-evaluation, and clarity.

I loved the engaging and comfortable tone of this novel, Elizabeth and I felt like close friends by the end of the story. I was so emotionally invested while reading this story that I felt tears well up in my eyes and my heartbeat accelerate with anticipation (the texts between Chad and Elizabeth…such feels!). In addition, I greatly appreciated the vibrant descriptions Karey White crafted in her novel. I loved her verbal illustrations of the bookstore where Matt works, the appetizing delicacies Elizabeth enjoys on her dates, the interior design projects Elizabeth works on (I want that rug!), and Elizabeth’s awesomely quirky wardrobe (I loved her tights-fetish!). I sincerely hope we see some more Austen-Inspired novels by Karey White! My Own Mr. Darcy is a must read! It’s “totes adorbs!”

Right off the bat, I knew I'd love this story. Elizabeth, a teenager, gets dragged to the movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother and just knows she'll hate it--but as soon as Mr. Darcy walks in, her world is altered. That one, pivotal moment influences the next six years of her dating life. Lizzie decides she is on the hunt for her perfect Mr. Darcy--and no one fits the bill, until she meets Matt. Unfortunately, she'd already promised her best friend to give Chad 10 dates before dumping him. How is it possible to really like two completely different guys??

I really enjoyed the characters--even the ones I couldn't stand. I loved the friendship that Lizzie shared with Janessa; I loved the way Chad and Lizzie were together--such an easy, gradual relationship; I loved the way Lizzie would try and mold Matt's characteristics to fit her ideal. I can understand Lizzie's dreams--I think the longer a person holds on to her idea of the perfect guy, the more unrealistic that dream becomes, yet it's nearly impossible to let go of it. That in itself really made Lizzie feel real to me.

The guys were so different. I don't mind love triangles--especially when I have a clear favorite, which I totally did in this case. Chad had a lot of great qualities and was soooo sweet!! Matt was totally like Mr. Darcy--at first--very arrogant and aloof. He never really seemed to morph into Mr. Darcy though.

This is a great book for any Austen fan looking for a modern spin-off.

Content: some mild kissing; clean.

This book was offered free on Amazon recently.

Amazon shows this book as rating 51% five stars and 35% four stars from 397 reviews, which translates to this being a well enjoyed book. I must say that my first impressive was that this was aimed at the YA group of readers but by the end I was convinced it may be a pleasurable read for teens on up. It is a totally clean book with a few kisses and hugs here and there. It is modern day story inspired by the 2005 P&P movie with Matthew Macfadyen.

Elizabeth Barrett and her best friend, Janessa, have coming up as their next assigned reading project the novel Pride and Prejudice. So when Elizabeth’s mom is twisting her arm to go to see the 2005 movie with her E. and Janessa decide that seeing it gives them a leg up on completing the assignment and gets Lizzie’s mom off her back. Little does Elizabeth anticipate that for the next six years she will be searching for her own Mr. Darcy and turning down man upon man after only one or two dates because he is not Matthew/Darcy. When Janessa forces her to promise the date her late reject 10 times before dumping him, Lizzie finds herself warming up to this blond haired, blue eyed science teacher/swim team coach. He does everything right BUT he does not embody “Darcy”.

Then Mr. Right…make that “Mr. Darcy” walks into the bank at which she is working as a teller until she can put her foot in the door of interior design for which she went to college. He has all the looks, the wealth, as well as the hauteur of the man of her dreams. She finagles ways to gain his attention and he FINALLY asks her to come to his office for lunch. But Matthew Dawson is not playing his role as scripted and Miss Elizabeth is holding tight to her dreams.

This story is very predictable but the journey is well written. Chad continues to find ways to show consideration and thoughtfulness while Matt puts his foot in his mouth and shows Elizabeth that he cannot finds ways to fit her into his world with pride that she is “His Elizabeth Bennet”.

I enjoyed this story and while it is not my usual sub-genre of JAFF I would recommend it as a very enjoyable romantic read.

LOVED IT! What a fun, squeaky clean read. It was so predictable and yet I couldn't seem to put it down. I'm of course a huge Jane Austen fan and P&P is my favorite...and like most of us P&P fans...we just seem to not be able to get enough. :) I have to say though, even I was a bit sick of Mr. Darcy (which I thought would NEVER happen.:)by the end of the book, and I was so happy when Lizzie got her OWN happily ever after instead of Elizabeth Bennett's. Great read.

My Own Mr. Darcy was a cute, quick read. There were parts that I loved and parts that I was so annoyed I wanted to slap someone! Chad was amazing from the beginning... loved him! Matt annoyed me from the beginning and he was the main one I wanted to slap! Right along with Meg! Ugh! That woman is horrible! LOL. I got my HEA although it ended WAY too quick from my liking. I totally would have loved an epilogue... would've been a perfect ending for me. But it was still good. :o)

This. Book. *ENCHANTED* me!

Since I read 'AustenLand' and was left with a nasty taste in my mouth, I wanted more. If there were THAT many Darcy-obsessed women, there had to be better than Shannon Hale's now-a-feature-film offering, that fell short in far too many ways. If you were dissatisfied and looking for a Darcy obsession done right, THIS is it.

Lizzie (Elizabeth Barrett, not Bennett) has been madly in love with Mr. Darcy (the Matthew MacFayden version) since she was in school. Oh, she's dated, but never more than a time or two, because no man is Matthew/Darcy. Finally, her exasperated best friend and roommate challenges her to go on TEN dates with the next guy she's asked out by... just to give reality a fighting chance. That next guy being Chad, a high school science teacher who is, well, meltingly wonderful, gentle and yet fun.

Unfortunately, the very day after the bet, who should come into the bank but Matt Dawson - even his name smacks of Matthew/Darcy. He's tall, dark, brooding, wealthy, aloof... Lizzie is in love. Instant love. But who should she choose? The sweet, thoughtful Chad, or the hero of her every dream?

This blew 'AustenLand' away. Completely. It was far and away better; unlike Jane, Lizzie is talented and aspiring as well as sweet and loving. Unlike 'AustenLand', the characters aren't cliche and worthless. And this book has a LOT of Caroline Bingley in it, which made it even better.

I will be reading this again and again. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who really would like a fantastic Austen-fanfic literary offering.

It is a truth well fixed in Lizzie Barrett's mind, that a young man who possesses Mr. Darcy's countenance (and bearing Matthew MacFadyen's very likeness) must be in want of a young woman like her. This is her ardent desire for six years since she first beheld Mr. Darcy on the large screen. So it is with much vexation that she has met a very fine young man named Chad who is good humoured, kind, and also pleasant in appearance. She has become rather fond of him but, alas, he is no Mr. Darcy! As she ponders on this, she soon makes the acquaintance of Mr. Matthew Dawson at her place of work. Whilst he held no opinion of her at first, Lizzie knew with certainty she has finally met her Mr. Darcy.

A most enjoyable read indeed! Clean, romantic and fun, Karey White did a good job. Jane Austen will be most pleased.

I thought this was a lot of fun. I’m a big fan of Jane Austen (who isn’t?) and loved the Kiera Knightly movie version. I actually remember watching it for the first time and the second it ended (around midnight) I made my husband go buy me a copy. I couldn’t wait to own it and make all my family and friends watch it. Beautifully done (and much better than the BBC version!), IMO.

Anyway, I thought the premise for the book was cute. Elizabeth fell in love with Mr. Darcy and would settle for no one else. I won’t say too much about the plot so I won’t give away spoilers, but soon a love-triangle emerges when Elizabeth has to choose between a guy she likes and a guy who she feels resembles her Mr. Darcy. I did think it was a tad crazy how obsessed she was with Mr. Darcy (and the actor who played him). It was nice to see her grow and watch as she figures out what she really wants in a relationship and choosing someone who is the best fit. Elizabeth was a likable heroine. She is a nice person and I thought that when she was with she was much more herself and I enjoyed their time together.

The guys.

Overall, a fun read. If you’re a fan of Pride and Prejudice you’ll enjoy this story. I liked that it wasn’t a retelling of the classic, but its own story. I thought the cover was pretty as well.

This book is the cutest thing since kittens. Seriously. It is one of the most adorable love stories I've ever read. It's kind of like a cupcake. A high-end one with daisies made of buttercream frosting on top (roses being too pretentious); sweet and light (but not too fluffy) and utterly delectable.

It is so easy to slip right into Elizabeth's skin; a reluctant teenager falling in love with Mr. Darcy for the first time. We can all sympathize with that, right? She takes it a step further, though, and becomes infatuated with the Matthew Macfadyen version, from his voice to his manners, and decides that the love of her life must be exactly like him. Right down to the blue eyes and tousled hair. Somewhat unreasonable, but certainly understandable.

Then she meets Chad. He's cute and funny and considerate and - blonde. Down to earth. Not darkly handsome and aloof like Darcy, the man of her dreams. Clearly, he cannot be the love of her life...but she really likes him. Soon after, she meets Matt Dawson, a Matthew Macfadyen lookalike who owns a bookstore (wealthy, check), is a bit of a snob (check) and has a family that is certain to disapprove of her. It must be fate!

Or is it?

I really love Elizabeth as a person. She displays a wonderful sense of honor in her dealings with both Chad and Matt and refuses to let anyone change her. She won't let Matt walk all over her even though she thinks he's the answer to her dreams. I was rooting for Chad since almost the very beginning of the book, but I liked Matt a lot, too. He can be a pompous idiot, but all he needs is the right person to draw him out.

There are several details in this story that seemed almost designed to make me happy. Elizabeth's best friend Janessa and her boyfriend, Ben, dance in and out of the story with lovely echoes of Jane and Bingley in a way that made me smile. Elizabeth decorates a room in teal and orange, my favorite combination of colors. It's set in Oregon, my state, and shows all the quirkiness that makes Portland fun without going overboard. But that's just the icing on this delightful confection of a novel.

I love the theme of self-discovery, of learning that dreams can come true in unanticipated ways. I liked that there was never even a hint of sex; it was just pure, sweet romance. I will definitely be re-reading My Own Mr. Darcy, and if Ms. White ever decides to write a sequel I'll be at the front of the line to get it.

I received an e-copy of this book for a blog tour hosted by I Am A Reader, Not A Writer in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I wanted to love this story. It was a really quick read and I did enjoy the book, but after only a few chapters I just couldn't help but think that the main character was really not very smart and she started bothering me. It's super obvious from the beginning who you know she will eventually end up with but I didn't mind that at all. I loved her interactions with this character, he is such a great guy and a really fun character to read about...then comes in Mr. #2. It's obvious he has problems, but he is actually a pretty good guy and he tries really hard for her so they can be together. When there are problems with the way he acts or things he says and she talks to him about it, he does honestly try to change and make things better. So eventually I actually ended up feeling really bad for him in the end when she actually chose the guy you always knew she would end up with. I felt like she was really unfair to #2's character when all he was doing was falling in love with her and she was forcing herself to love him, when you knew she didn't. So the way they had everything abruptly end between the two of them I didn't like. I felt like the author was trying to get you as the reader to just want to wipe your hands of him and say 'good riddance' but I just kept feeling like she was so unfair to him it made me a little upset. I did, however, like a lot of scenes in the book. I loved when she got sick and she got taken care of and all the scenes when she was decorating the house were so fun. I loved reading about those. But then you get to the final scene, it just doesn't do enough to give you a sense of resolve between the two that end up together. Let's just give us more than a page to actually enjoy these two being together when there has been so much they have gone through together. I would have liked a little more after wanting them to be together for so much of the book. So over all it was a fast, fun read, but left something to be desired at the end.

I was able to get this book for free so I figured why not? I knew it was probably going to be super cheesy and maybe be something I wouldn't be able to finish because of it but I in fact really enjoyed it.
Throughout the whole book I wanted to just take Elizabeth by the shoulders and shake her and tell her how ridiculously stupid she was being. I know we all have ideals of what we are looking for but to have such firm and specific ideas that you will only marry someone that fits a certain mold in looks, personality, lifestyle, etc. on one hand blows my mind that someone could pigeon hole themselves and refuse any other possibilities but as I thought more about it realized we all do that to some extent.
I think the author used an extreme example which worked for the book but makes us think. Are we shutting ourselves off to opportunities for happiness because of preconceived ideas?
Matt was Elizabeth's ideal, everything she thought she wanted, to have her own real life Mr. Darcy. She also had Chad, oh Chad *sigh*, who was everything she didn't know she wanted but was perfect for her. Luckily he was mature enough and in love with her enough to stick around enough for her to figure this out.
Overall a very enjoyable easy read.

Being a committed Jane Austen fan, I couldn't resist this when I saw it offered as part of a blog tour. The gorgeous cover alone was enough to draw me in and the premise was fun. . .

At sixteen, Elizabeth was dragged to see the Pride & Prejudice movie by her mother. The moment Matthew Macfadyen, who played Mr Darcy, appeared on the screen, she was smitten. By the time the movie ended she'd made a vow that no man would ever be good enough for her unless he was identical to Mr Darcy. Her dream guy even had to look like Matthew Macfadyen!

Years, and many unsuccessful dates later, her best friend forces her to agree to give the last guy she went out with ten dates. Enter Chad. He's the charming, sweet guy of the story. Sadly for Chad, shortly after starting her dating challenge with him, she meets her Matthew Macfadyen lookalike. Pity he's an absolute creep with whom she has nothing in common . . . It takes much of the book for Elizabeth to realize this, but in the end we get our happy ever after.

So much for the plot, did I enjoy it?

Yes, I did. It was fun, light-hearted and squeaky clean (a refreshing change from so many other contemporary romances I've read lately)

The characters - while not exactly deep - were nicely penned.

I especially liked Chad - but then, I was clearly meant to. Karey White made very sure that her reader knew exactly who the 'good' and 'bad' guys were in her story. This is perhaps my deepest criticism. It all felt a little too black and white for me. Her treatment of Matt left us in doubt that he was the 'bad' guy. The trouble was that his flaws reflected badly on Elizabeth's character. Her obsession with her Mr Darcy-ideal-lived-through-Matt made her appear really stupid at times. I found myself shaking my head, wondering how she could bear to be with a guy who treated her so badly when she could have been with an infinitely nicer - and far more suitable - guy like Chad. But I guess that is what obsession is all about - it robs the victim of reason.

Because of Elizabeth's obsession, the plot allowed for some good character development. Happily Elizabeth finally comes to her senses and sees Matt and Chad for what they really are. Although I was delighted that she ended up with the right guy, I think Chad forgave her a little too easily. Also, I felt the ending was wrapped up too quickly. The book would have benefited from an epilogue.

For all my criticisms, would I recommend it?

Definitely, especially if you love a contemporary romance and Jane Austen. One of the strengths of the book was that it wasn't just a retelling. It was a fresh story built on the bones of Pride and Prejudice. I really liked that.

Can going to the cinema with your mum and best friend change your outlook on life and, especially, on men? Can a fictional character wreck your love life? Elizabeth Barrett, the protagonist of “My Own Mr Darcy” , would answer YES to both questions, of course.
She unwillingly follows her mother to the cinema to see Pride and Prejudice, only because, probably, that will help her avoid reading Jane Austen’s book for a project. So she asks her best mate to go with her. Unexpectedly, seeing Matthew MacFadyen as brooding, fascinating Darcy on the huge screen brings her to quite surprising outcomes.
Pride and Prejudice> becomes her favourite book, she reads it on and on dreaming of Mr Darcy and looking forward to meeting her own dashing gentleman one day.
But, as we well know, reality can very rarely be compared to the world of perfection we create in our minds while reading, so what expects Elizabeth is a love life of disappointment and disillusionment: there is not one man who is Mr Darcy enough.
Pressed by her best friend, Elizabeth decides to give nice Chad - a sensitive, kind, generous teacher - a chance to conquer her. Actually, 10 chances, since she accepts to date him 10 times and starts counting down till it’s over. Not that she dislikes Chad or his company but, you know, meanwhile she has met her own Mr Darcy, her dream man, Matt Dawson: rich, dashing, handsome, looking like Matthew MacFadyen, … perfect!

A lovely modern romance with a touch of Austenesque charm, this novel was a pleasant discovery: a delightful read, fast paced and relaxing . If you are looking for a bit of fresh air in a light read, this book is something you will appreciate. The protagonist is definitely someone you can relate to, if you’ve ever had a crush on a fictional character: whose expectations have never been spoilt by literary heroes’ high standards?
But you will also feel for poor Chad, the cute but too ordinary guy who can never compare to dashing Darcy, and be drawn to such a Darcy-esque hero as Matt Dawson. Can a woman love two men at the same time? Not really, not actually. Choices, though tough, must be made.

My expectations for this book weren't high nor were they low. I feel like this is just a sweet book, that is enjoyable. Easy to put down, easy to pick back up. Which for me in my life is sometimes a good thing! If I read a book I can't put down it's almost a bad thing because I have four small kids, church responsibilities, family responsibilities and the million other things that pull us here and there.

I instantly LOVED Chad. He was so adorable and sweet. He made me smile and reminded me about what I love most about my Husband. I wanted Chad and Lizzie to end up together especially the whole first half of the book, but by the second half I started to feel bad for him. He was clearly in love with her and she abused that at times. I LOVE P & P, however for me this was just a little too extreme. The way Matt treated her made was like nails on a chalk board at times. I just couldn't wrap my head around the fact that she was so obsessed that she was willing to not be as happy. By the time Matt's parents were in the picture I was practically screaming at the book. HOW DARE THEY!! What snobs!! Including Matt. You could tell what kind of guy they each were by how they took Lizzie's break up with them. Chad, was of course a wonderful gentleman and Matt was a jerk. I think this speaks volumes.

The one underlining part that I liked was how the author touched based on the difference between "loving" someone and "adoring" someone. I hope every girl/women reaches for that look from a man that clearly says "I adore you." There is nothing better in this life. Including chocolate. :)

I could tell from the very beginning that this was going to be a simple easy read, but I was still disappointed. The plot was fine, the writing was okay, but it was the lack of character development that killed it for me, especially with the main character Lizzie. She was about as interesting as cardboard to me. I think Matt even expressed more emotion than she did at times! There is a time and place for "she said" but it's not after every single thing that comes out of the heroine's mouth! I only gave this book 3 stars because Chad is a dream boat, and certainly deserves better than the leading lady in this story.

I was up and down with this one. When I was done though I really did like it. Overall a good story telling and a decent plot (a tiny twist on a very overdone topic) but I felt she told me too much instead of let me watch the characters experience it (they went here. they ate this). Go into this one with a 'fluff' attitude and I think you'll enjoy it plenty!

Ahhh what a perfectly sweet book!! Matt was a TOOL!!!! Why she didn't see this earlier I just don't know! I loved Chad from the moment we met him! He was awesome!! I really did love this book! I haven't stopped thinking about it. I had a hard time putting this one down and now that it's over I don't want to start a new one.

Fans of Jane Austen will love this one!

For anyone that’s ever loved Pride and Prejudice, this one’s for you. Lizzie was such a relatable protagonist. I loved her spunk and sweet personality, and watching her try and figure out what her “Mr Darcy” would be was an enjoyable adventure. She is torn between two men, one who is a dream come true, and the other who makes her think of different dreams. All I can say is I adored one of them and loved each and every interaction between them. The ending was my favorite, although I would have absolutely loved an epilogue. Such a great read!

How often do we envision the partner we will (hopefully) spend the rest of our lives with? What will he/she look like? For those of us who have read Pride and Prejudice, I’m sure Mr. Darcy has played a part in those visions. Anyone fortunate enough to have seen the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice knows Matthew Macfadyen’s portrayal of Darcy is a good place to start (I’m a Colin Firth girl myself though!) When I heard that Karey White had written a book about the pursuit of a perfect Mr. Darcy a la the wonderful 2005 film adaptation, I figured I had to give it a try. My Own Mr. Darcy is the title, and it is an interesting idea to say the least.

Elizabeth has seen the man she wants to have for the rest of her life. The only problem is that he is Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy in the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice. After Elizabeth first glimpses Macfadyen when she watches the movie with her mother, she vows to never date another man until she finds one that matches her idealistic views. However, this seems to do her more harm than good, as six years pass without Elizabeth going on a single date. Finally, Elizabeth is convinced by her roommate to attempt ten dates with a man named Chad. Although she finds the idea revolting, she soon finds that Chad is kind and down to earth. As a school science teacher and swim coach, Chad is not the kind of guy that Elizabeth envisioned herself dating. However, while dating Chad, she meets Matt Dawson, a wealthy bookstore owner who appears to be everything she saw in Mr. Darcy from the beginning. However, as she gets to know Matt, she finds that what she originally wanted in a man may have been wrong from the beginning. Will Chad’s nondescript background be enough to sway Elizabeth from the dazzling Matt Dawson?

I think that contemporary novels inspired by Austen’s works are my favorite works to read in the sphere of Jane Austen fan fiction. I’m always curious to see how authors will modernize Austen’s storylines or characters, or how their story will be influenced by Austen. I was really impressed with the way White’s story was influenced. The idea of holding out for the perfect man (aka Mr. Darcy) is something I’m sure many women have done. I give White a lot of credit for also pushing forth the idea that sometimes the idea of what is perfect for us is actually disastrous. So many times books that focus on relationships about idealistic men or women in larger-than-life scenarios directly impact what we want and wish for in real life. Elizabeth is a perfect example of what perfectionistic romances can do to a woman! White gets two thumbs up from me for writing romance with a realistic approach.

White’s storytelling and writing was effective, flowed easily from page to page, and was thoroughly enjoyable as a whole. My one complaint is that I would have liked to have seen a longer conclusion to the novel. We worked up this conflict between Elizabeth, Matt, and Chad for most of the book only to have it resolve too quickly and be done with. I’m a reader that enjoys the building of a good conflict as well as a de-escalation after the resolution (I like dessert with my dinner!) Regardless of the short ending, this book makes a perfect companion to a cold day. With a warm cup of cocoa and blanket you’ll fall in love with these characters just as much as I did.

"Pride and Prejudice enthusiasts will love this modern spin on one of the most timeless love stories ever told. Social status, stubborn attitudes, and preconceived notions mix with a surprising love triangle that keep readers' hearts guessing until the very end."

I hate to say this by...OMGosh, was this cute! It was more than cute, really. But if you're a girl who's ever had a massive crush on an untouchable guy you know what I mean. In this case, though, the guy wasn't all that untouchable. He eventually became pretty tangible. But what made this different from the original Pride & Prejudice was that this Lizzy was presented with another option--a suitor who was acceptable, unlike Mr. Collins in the original story; really, he was more than acceptable and taken for a good 'guy' friend.

The opening hooked me. It could have been because I'm a major Darcy fan or the way the author used the intro of a teen and her mom viewing the actual 2005 Pride & Prejudice movie; either way, I wanted to read on. There was a dreamy tension between the way this story's Lizzy related to the actual Elizabeth Bennett's reactions to the real Mr. Darcy.

This Lizzy was an interesting character. She dreamed of being a great interior designer one day. She even held a degree, but currently worked as a bank teller, waiting for her big break into the design world. She was a dreamer, and had lusted for a man as credible and loyal as Mr. Darcy as long as she could remember. Her BFF (since high school) even argued about it with her. And, of course, her Mr. Darcy finally waltzed into the bank where she worked. His name: Matt Dawson. Perfect. Tall, dark, handsome, and as stately as the fictional Mr. Darcy this Lizzy had fallen in love with as a teenager.

The story really began when Lizzie's BFF challenged her to go on at least ten dates with the next guy who asked her, giving him a chance over her fantasy of Mr. Darcy. She agreed. And frankly, kind of lucked out. The next guy who asked her out was a sweet school teacher. (Won't say more for fear of spoilers.) Just know, even though I am a MAJOR Darcy fan and wanted nothing more than this Lizzy to get her very own Mr. Darcy in Matt, I slowly found myself softening toward this school teacher. Grr....

Through awkward social gatherings with Matt's snobbish circle--and yes, there was a Caroline and incredibly rude aunt--strangely comfortable encounters with the teacher's family, new and unexpected interior design opportunities both personal and professional, the reader traveled along with Lizzy as she sorted out her true feelings and what she really desired out of life. Did she really want Mr. Darcy. Or could her Mr. Darcy be of a different shade, economic background, and personality altogether?

Um...you'll have to read to find out. Trust me; you won't be sorry.

I received a free copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

It is so hard to find well-written romances. That is why I don’t read a lot of them. However, I simply knew I had to try My Own Mr. Darcy, because so many of the reviewers I follow had read it, and they all adored it!
Obviously, I was not disappointed at all. The story started out strong, and it finished strong. I thoroughly enjoyed reading every moment of it!

Why? A lot of it has to do with the characters!

Matt: I have to admit, I liked Matt, in spite of all his flaws, and I wouldn’t have been too torn up if Elizabeth chose him, even though it was obvious that she was going to end up with Chad. Sure, he’s selfish and he’s snobby, but because of that you could tell that he really liked Elizabeth, because he was able to overcome a lot of that for her. No, he was nowhere near as sweet as Chad, but he tried (most of the time). And that’s what I liked about him.

Chad: Like I said before, he was so sweet! He could be a bit of the stereotypical ‘good boy’ sometimes, (The good boy and the bad boy; the two most overused stereotypes in romance) but he had unique qualities as well. At first I wasn’t liking him as much as Matt, and then he and Elizabeth watched Pride and Prejudice, and, well, my heart kind of melted.

Elizabeth: Loved her! I could relate to her, and that’s what made me like her. When I was younger, I had a huge crush on my book boyfriend; not Mr. Darcy, but Peter Pan. They aren’t exactly similar characters, but I could relate! And I loved how she wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed in. When she told off the pompous author, I started to smile.

Meg: Ugh. The author really succeeded in making an unlikeable character. I couldn’t STAND her. I shan’t dwell on her anymore, though.

The ending was so adorable. It was a great way to finish a great story.
I simply loved this book, and this is coming from one picky romance reader! I will most likely read more by this author.

We can all relate to sixteen yr old Elizabeth when it comes to Pride and Prejudice and Mr. Darcy. I think at one time or another he has become our dream. Our book boyfriend. In her case book boyfriend. Where ours ends and hers continues is that for Elizabeth she took this dream and wanted it to be her ideal man. A Matthew MacFayden double Mr. Darcy personality in her world. That is what she held out for her teenage and adult life. She gave no guy a chance. No guy until her friend forces her hand. When this happens she begins to falter. Why? Because the charismatic, sweet, adorable, kind and wonderful Chad is in her life. Chad makes her start to see that maybe her dream should be altered. She starts to feel for him despite all her stubbornness not to. But Elizabeth becomes a complete doof when Matt Dawson walks into the bank and into her life. This is the Mr. Darcy in her dreams or so she thinks. There are parallels with the movie to. Eerily to many parallels. Matt is pompous but can be kind. He has a family and friends that look down on Elizabeth but at first he doesn't fight them. He only decides he wants Elizabeth more seriously when he finds out about Chad. He manipulates at times but underneath he can be kind. Just his way he grew up takes over too often. Elizabeth is sweet and very talented she just had this ideal in her head and didn't want to give it up.

Thank the heavens she began to see all sides of the coins and realized that dreams should be changed. I think it was when she was ill and it was Chad who was there for her. Or at her best friends wedding rehearsal when she saw love made everyone deliriously happy. She wasn't happy but was when she was with Chad.

A really sweet look at a woman who takes a dream of Mr.Darcy and goes to far only to realize that dreams can change. Love makes you want to change your idealization of what you want. Kindness makes you see things differently. A clean sweet romance where the great guy never gives up hope and shows the girl that love is what matters not a idealization.
