Rate this book
In 1965, Cesar Chavez and his United Farm Workers organization launched a strike against grape growers in California. For five years, they fought to win fair wages, better working conditions, and recognition as a union from the growers. Readers will learn about Chavez's methods of resistance, how the movement grew to include people from all walks of life throughout the country, and why Chavez was such as effective leader. They will also find out what Chavez did in the years following the strike and examine his early life.

I really enjoyed this expository text. I thought that the information was laid out in an accessible format and was not too dense. I found out some things about Cesar Chavez that I did not previously know. The use of pictures throughout the text breaks up the information into smaller more digestible chunks. I think it is important to include the histories of people of color who made a difference in this country, because every student should have people that they can identify with that they can look up to, that all students see people of similar heritage that will make them feel proud of that heritage.

I got some non-fiction books on bookmooch for my neice's classroom library & decided to read through them first. This is one of them and it's an interesting view from Scholastic. I remember reading lots of these "A TRUE book" biographies with my sons during the 1990's and they had nice photos, large blocks of text, and a colorful graphic of some kind of important dates or places. They have updated their brand since then as this was very colorful with tons of graphics, very small blocks of texts, huge photos, and not as much information overall. Although I have no quibbles with the information presented, as it was clear & good, I was amazed at the change in presentation to our match our sound-bite world. I'm not certain we do our students a favor by not allowing them to actually read blocks of text larger than a half-page.
