Perilous Risk

Rate this book
Heartbroken and disillusioned, Rebecca Howland is done with all men. Especially noblemen. Past a certain age, she knows her previous life of carnal indulgence and grand adventure is over. Or so she thinks. Back at home, whilst working in her family’s shop, a moment of compassion entangles her in an old battle between two powerful, bitter enemies. A commoner, Rebecca finds herself falsely accused of a heinous act by a vicious member of the aristocracy. In grave peril, she turns to the one man she thinks can help her.

Stephen Drake, now inexplicably Baron Drake, has always desired Rebecca. When she turns to him, he vows to protect her at all costs, especially from the dangerous life he lives. The stakes are high and time is running out for her … and for him as well. Stephen finds himself driven to ruthless actions that threaten to kill the fragile bond between them.

Years ago, Rebecca forbade herself to love Stephen Drake. Now he’s back, no longer the young man she remembers but a dark and dangerous stranger. When he demands a fortnight of her complete submission in return for his protection, his sexual dominance ignites a carnal passion that makes her feel alive like never before. But … dare she trust a man with too many secrets?

Seriously? How often does the mistress score the next sequel? I LOVE it!

I was introduced to Natasha Blackthorne's work through a guest blog post she did for the first book in this series called A Measured Risk. I thought it was so fabulous that I recommended it to all my historical erotica loving pals, especially those who are fans of BDSM elements.

Then this book came out. I remembered Jon's mistress from before. I remembered him ending things with her so he could marry his one true love.... But seriously, when I considered who'd get the next book, I thought it might be one of his relatives or maybe his bride's. Never had I heard of a mistress getting her own story. But that's the beauty of Natasha Blackthorne. She does the fun and unexpected.

Her heroes are flawed. So are her heroines. Unlike typical historical heroines, this woman is not between the ages of 18-20. In fact, she's closer to 40! She's lived life. She was a kept woman and enjoyed her pleasures of the flesh. Made no apologies for her appetites. Yet, as mature as her age dictated, there was an innocence about her that, joined with her passions, made her seem almost younger than both her years and the life she lived. She'd been well kept and protected by her lover. Given the opportunity to explore under his protection, leaving her much more big hearted and kind than you'd expect.

The way her hero craved her was fantastic as well. After the ups and downs life had handed her, it was interesting to watch her experience what being truly adored and pursued with an unquenchable passion was like. Every woman deserves a shot at a happy ending, after all. Even the kept women. Maybe, especially the kept women.

I would definitely wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone into historical erotic romances with an erotic bend! Well done, Ms. Blackthorne!

"I am not sweet." She gritted her teeth after the last word. "I have tried to tell you that I have changed since you knew me so long ago."
"You will be sweet for me."
His gently spoken words ran with such conviction.

Regency Risks is an erotic historical romance series with light BDSM. The first two books follow Anne and Jon, while this book follows Jon's former mistress, Becky/Rebecca and Stephen. I did not want to read about Rebecca but after a reading drought and coming across a positive review of how inventive it was to have the next book in the series star the hero's mistress, I thought why not.

I loved the characterization and the angst that came from having such passionate characters with complex interior lives. A simpler novel would have Rebecca move on from Ruel. No lingering attachments and perhaps a realization that she didn't actually love him.

That would be too easy so thank goodness we didn't get that book.

A lot of Perilous Risk deals with the heroine's fear of Stephen and her clinging on to Ruel in a way that feels so relatable. It wasn't missish of her, or fabricated angst. Every time she ran away or pulled away from Stephen and went to Ruel, I was like yeah I feel you girl. This was the mistress who loved her protector, felt connected/bonded with him due to their sexual predilections, and then was set aside. Other aspects of her character really fit her: she liked being wild. Running away wasn't good, but she enjoyed adventures, caprices. She was an older woman with youthful, girlish energy.

Stephen is a perfect foil for her, understanding what she needs. When he tells her he wants her as she is and she does not need to anticipate his needs 😭😭😭 and when Stephen said I'm building a ship, we're travelling the world, and the place you like best I'm building my home... ??? Pleaseee.

Rebecca is resistant to Stephen, despite wanting him. This was quite compelling and portrayed realistically. Aren't we closed off to the people we secretly desire to open up to the most? We're almost scared that it could be everything or something could get ruined. Rebecca ran away from Stephen *so* many times. You think it's just that first chapter... and then the second chapter. But damn.

Anyways, but the payoff when the shift happens, when Rebecca stops finding herself automatically relying on Ruel to help her or look at him wistfully with rosy-tinted glasses, and starts to squabble with him? That was so earned.

Rebecca and Jon scenes are powerfully charged. Sometimes, this can be uncomfortable for the reader. I do not want to feel like Jon and Rebecca have something that Jon and Anne don't. The author does a good job to show where that charge is coming from. Rebecca still holds strong feelings for Jon. She sees him as someone who can protect her. She is wistful. Meanwhile, Jon comes off, in the end, more like a fussy overbearing older brother than a possessive ex-lover. He keeps wanting her to be married to one of his friends. What pushed my limit was probably when Jon tries to persuade her to not be with Stephen, but again I see that more as Jon protecting his own. Rebecca is more like a sister or a poor relative he must protect versus an ex he still has feelings for and wants to be all up in her business.

Did Rebecca and Stephen give me the same feels that Anne and Jon did from the previous two books in this series? Honestly, no. But this book was still really good and I need more romances like this.

No shade but even though Rebecca and Stephen's past did give me some tingles, the strongest feels still came from the breadcrumbs we get from Jon and Anne 😭😭😭

Another brilliant (torturous) move by the author was to not actually show us Jon and Anne in conversation with each other.

We only ever see Jon or Anne interacting with Rebecca or hear about their lives recounted by Stephen lol. There is only ONE scene where Jon and Anne are interacting together but even then we do not get actual dialogue between them (the deliberate cruelty): Anne walks into her child's room where her kid has been sick overnight and Jon has been resting and watching over her. Rebecca waits outside the room and through her perspective, we see a very intimate scene of domestic life: Anne's knotty mind tells Jon things that they must do this, that, and the third for the kids. And Jon... just acting like a normal lord.

Not Rebecca's wild, carefree lord:

You must...
You must...
You must...
The countess' voice continued to carry in the hallway.
The hushed tone of Jon's voice echoed, deep and firm, in response.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
Of course, yes.
Rebecca had never heard the man utter the affirmative so many times in one setting. And there wasn't a hint of his habitual mockery in the face of his countess' obvious over-concern with little details. Instead, tenderness infused his tone. And respect.
The intimacy of the moment struck her and she immediately took several steps backwards. A sense of having been an interloper, a prier, sent a spiral of shame through her.
But something even more profound was dawning on her.
That man was not her Jon.
That man was almost a stranger.
Her Jon had been fierce and free. A bit wild.
This man appeared so settled. Staid.
She took a deep breath, trembling inside with the sudden revelation.
All the time before, this had been inside him.

This whole scene just did something to my brain chemistry. I could not stop thinking about this.

And then when Jon asks why everyone dislikes/judges Anne 😭😭😭 it pulled me back to book 2. For a throwaway line, it was so poignant and potent. I felt for Jon, in how he wonders why everyone is so bent out of shape about Anne living her life.

Goodness

The first two books were about Jon and Anne, two characters I enjoyed very much. This book starts before their meeting when Jon had a lover named Rebecca.

This book was probably the most dramatic one I have read by this author, there was a lot of suspense and drawn out scenes. But of course what I loved the most was the love between Stephan and Rebecca.

Natasha Blackthorne never ceases to amaze me, her story telling is original and the world she creates engaging, (not to mention some real steamy love scenes). She is definitely one of my favorite authors.

First off, I've been a fan of historical for many years, where my lovable dukes and duchesses are usually portrayed as foreboding yet passionate and (sometimes) kind people. This was my first book by Natasha Blackthorne and it was a great read. In Perilous Risk, the author gave me a much darker twist on the English nobility. They were painted as hard, sinister, and merciless characters. I wanted to stick a pen in their eye!!! Completely out of the norm for me and I quite enjoyed it. I'm so glad Rebecca's age was finally disclosed. Yes, I'm one of those people. The storyline was so well written that I could not guess her age...at all! Her past, knowledge, and the company she kept, molded her character and made her such a smart and strong heroine, one I kept rooting for. She is a very sensual woman who did not suppress her sexuality. Her desires became my desires. I deeply respected Rebecca's loyalty and love for her friend and former lover, the Earl of Ruel. I'm definitely intrigued and want to know more about their past and more about Ruel and his countess. Stephen Drake. HELLO! This man weakened my legs and tingled my toes. Yes, I took that from the book! Drake was a true predator. He oozed danger, sex, strength, and ruthlessness yet he was completely patient, loving, and protective of Rebecca. There was so much depth in their relationship and I couldn't read the fast enough. I loved their honest conversations, banter, and passion. The steamy love scenes were definitely enjoyable! All in all, this was quite the book. Bravo Ms. Blackthorne, for a wonderful adventure and for reminding us that we can find love at any age.

I almost knocked off one more star because I got tired of the h continuously running away from the H. The first two times I could suspend reality, but the third time I thought it was really just more of a way to move the plot forward and not authentic to the character. I also thought the ending drug out in places and I wonder if some of those scenes couldn’t have been more easily explored before the final pages of the book. I will read more from this author.

Loved it!

I really enjoyed this book because of the well-rounded characters, the setting and, most of all, the many twists I didn’t expect. These are the elements that, in my humble opinion, are what makes a great book! Natasha Blackthorne does not disappoint! I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates this genre as I do!

I love Natasha Blackthorne's characters.

As I've said before, her characters are human, with all the good and bad, the frailties, the mistakes, the emotions that implies.

Rebecca and Stephen are no exceptions. In fact, I think they might just be my favorite pair of all Blackthorne's books.

As usual, I won't divulge plot or discuss it. But, as usual, I will, however, share what I loved about the story.

First and foremost, for this reader, was a theme that I don't see often in historical fiction: the way a lover can unconsciously demean the other without even trying, just by merely being themselves. And how sometimes we don't even realize we are being demeaned because our self-esteem is not large enough to recognize it. And how, sometimes, the beautiful thing occurs and when new person comes into our lives and they see the effects of the treatment that we couldn't see. How we fool ourselves into thinking someone loves us and we imagine that physical relationships are somehow substitutes for love. And how that one day, wonderfully, we see this clearly. And then we're free.

That intrigued me about Stephen and Rebecca. Specifically, Rebecca had become accustomed to being taken for granted by her former lover, Lord Ruel. Upon her budding but stormy relationship with Stephen Drake, Rebecca begins to see this former lover for what he had been all along. The reader smiles at this point because it's a familiar scenario in the big love scheme of life, and we're happy when the emotional blinders fall from Rebecca's eyes. A little help from sexy Stephen didn't hurt, either. He could see, all along, what Rebecca could not. And, driven by his years-long love for her, he was there when she saw it, too.

As I said, the emotional element to Ms. Blackthorne's writing is what I love about her books. The love mistakes we make.

Rebecca has a past. Stephen has a dark past, a dark mystery. I love when souls with pasts and secrets unite and...ah...you know the rest.

"Perilous Risk." A beautifully tormented couple and their lavish, sexy, sexy, fiery story.

Do not miss it.

So when I finished Book #2 in this series, I was eager to move along to book #3 where I presumed that we'd get a conclusion to Jon and Anne's story, since that was hinted at by the author at the end of book 2.

Boy was I wrong.

While Jon and Anne make small appearances in this one, Perilous Risk jumps ahead five years from the end of book 2 and explores what happened to Rebecca, Jon's submissive mistress from before he met Anne. It also introduces Stephen Drake, a man she knew during the time she was Jon's sub. S and R fell in love (although Rebecca refused to admit it) and Stephen asked her to run away with him, but at the time she felt some sort of loyalty and love for Jon and refused. We also learn than Rebecca with Jon's mistress for 18 years. No wonder she had all the complicated feelings.

5 years later and R finds herself attempting to help out Anne. We learn (and, frankly there's little satisfaction from this) that Jon has forced a marriage between the evil Maria and Sebastian (Saxby) and sent them off to Jamaica. Somehow Saxby returns with a horrible illness and Anne (because she's stupid) asks R for help since she's an apothecary whiz. Five days later, Saxby winds up dead and Maria's accusing Rebecca of murder.

But Stephen has returned, ill, and is watching Rebecca without her knowledge.... and realizes that he can swoop in and declare her for himself. But how? And why? Is he honest?

Because this is multi-POV some of the drama and mystery that is Stephen Drake is understood pretty quickly. But I still had a hard time (until the near-end) why Rebecca behaved the way she did... it becomes clear in the end. S is quite the dominant, which is what R needs.

The refreshing thing about this was that Rebecca is in her mid-40s when this takes place and Stephen is 8 years her junior. BUT there are still questions left: can they/do they have a child together, even after she's shot? What about his illness? What happens with Jon and Anne and their relationship with her?

The Story of Rebecca Howland and Stephen Drake.

Rebecca and Stephen met many years ago when he was only 18 and just a young boy in Rebecca's eyes. She was married and refused to be unfaithful to her husband but she so enjoyed the long conversations she and Stephen shared frequently. They met again many years later but she was the long-term mistress to Jonathan Lloyd and even though she desperately wanted to be with Stephen, she knew Jonathan would not allow her to be with him alone and that is the only way Stephen wanted to be with her. They parted ways once more but were reunited just a few years later.

Rebecca is drawn towards Stephen but she did not believe that he could accept her and all of her proclivities. She was worried because she was so much older than he was, she could not understand why he would be content with her for anything longer than a night or two. She just knew that after a time he would start to look for someone much younger than her. She had closed her heart off from feeling love after her time with Jonathan Lloyd ended, she did not want to take that chance and have her heart broken again.

I will admit I was not a fan of Rebecca's character in the first two books but once I learned her story, I truly felt for her and the life that she had led. The author writes such wonderful stories to make you feel like you really know the characters. I really wanted Rebecca to be able to open her heart back up and give Stephen a chance.

Stephen had his own demons that he was constantly battling because of his employment. However, he had always loved Rebecca and was willing to do anything to have that chance to prove that they were perfect for one another. He was also willing to do anything to ensure her safety when her life was being threatened. All the while, he was battling an illness as well. Together they are able to heal each other completely.
I would highly recommend this book!

Rebecca starts off seeing one man in a time when having a sexual relationship could ruin a young lady, he is her protector and wont let anyone touch her without his say so. but Rebecca is tempted by another man and things don't go the way she would like them to so that life is left behind her.

Rebecca is called upon to help someone and it all goes south when she finds that it leads to her getting dragged into something she didn't want to get involved in.and this leads her to seek help off a man she once couldn't stop lusting after.

Steven has always wanted Rebecca but it was a dream he could never have, until one day she shows up looking for help so he says he will help her as long as she gives herself to him.He is determined to save her from her troubles but in doing so he has to try to keep her safe from the life he leads.

Rebecca didn't want to feel anything for Steven but she finds that she is drawn to him and she gives him the sexual obedience he asks for.

Iv not read this other two books in this series and I'm regretting that because if they are as good as this one then I would of fully enjoyed them. Thankfully you don't need to read the other two books to know whats going on, its easy enough to catch on.

This book has a dominance and submission and I have to say I like that. I have to admit this book left little flutters in the bottom of my stomach.Natasha did a great job of writing this book, it had me gripped right from the begging to end. if you like this kind of book then you are going to LOVE!! this one. Not only are the sex scenes really well written but it also has a really good story line which you can picture your self as Rebecca and living her life. Im really glad I read this book yet again there is no disappointment from Mrs Natasha Blackthorne.

WOW! Simply delicious and wicked. #3 in the "Regency Risks" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Fast paced, thrill ride of delicious wickedness. Passion, danger, romance, lots sensuality and so much more makes this a must read, Erotic Historical Romance. " Perilous Risk" is about so much more than sensuality and submission, it is also about betrayal, second chances, an older courtesan, a younger baron, it's also about trust, romance and love. A compelling and complex Erotic with a bit of BDSM, lots of passion, submission and love. The love scenes are tastefully written, but very sensual and passionate. The characters are engaging, long suffering, and interesting. The storyline is well written, with intrigue, suspense and mystery. Kept me guessing who was doing what to whom and why. Oh, yes you may find a spy, an assassin and a murderess. What a thrill ride! I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys lots of spice with their romance. A perfect late night read! Ms. Blackthorne is a consumerist storyteller. Loved it! A wickedly delicious Regency romp! Well done.

The sexy, mysterious Stephen Drake

I enjoyed this sexy, suspenseful historical, erotic romance. Rebecca is 44 years old with an adult son, who is reunited with Stephen. He is 8 years younger and they met when he was just 18. As the story unfolds, my curiosity about Stephen grows.

Rebecca is trying to run away from unpleasantness and hold on to her past lover, Jon, who is married. He had been her protector, but who can she trust when her world is turned upside down by a false accusation?

The erotic scenes added bdsm elements. The suspense increased. There were terrific twists. This is my first by this author (thanks to Anna of Herding Cats blog), but it won't be my last. Even though this is book 3, it is a standalone.

This is an intricately woven story of heartache, regret, loss, redemption and finally love. Rebecca and Stephen fought hard for their love and went through more than any couple should have to. Stephen Drake was everything you could want in a Regency Romance anti-hero love interest, he was mysterious, gorgeous, kind and a bit maniacal. Rebecca on the other hand was too flighty for my taste and her constant indecision and self doubt left me cold. That being said, this story was written beautifully as always, with plenty of angst, mystery, and lots and lots of hot and naughty love scenes!

I am sure I would have enjoyed this book a LOT more if I had noticed that it is part of a series! Not a bad stand-alone read, but I felt like I lost so much of the characters' background and past interactions.

It is also my first older woman-younger man read, even more so in a BDSM setting! I just couldn't shake the uneasiness from the pit of my stomach, which makes me a bit sad because it's clearly my personal issue, because the book was very well written, and Stephen, in any other context, would have felt to me like a wonderful Dom :S

Perilous Risk is a delicious departure from traditional historical romance. Set in the Regency Period, Rebecca and Stephen make this historical erotic romance sizzle with hot and sensual sexual encounters. With a bit of BDSM play during a time when such things would have shocked "polite society", this story is not only hot, it also has heart. Perilous Risk proves that neither time nor age can stand in the way of true love. Highly recommended.
