With a breathtaking collection of unique photography, A Photographic Tribute to Apple Innovation takes the reader on a tour of the most visually stunning and important products produced by the world's most innovative company—Apple. Follow Apple's journey through a photographic collection of their most important desktops, portables, peripherals, prototypes, iDevices (iPad, iPod and iPhone) and packaging.
Created as a tribute to the army of engineers, designers, product managers, and visionaries that navigated Apple through this incredible journey, ICONIC is the ultimate coffee table book for every Apple fan, and the perfect gift for any Apple owner who ever wanted to explore and discover the true roots of their favorite iMac, iPod, iPad, or iPhone.
This is a beautiful and (nearly) comprehensive collection of photographs spanning the history of Apple design. I enjoyed it, and very much wanted to "5-star" it, but there were a couple of areas that could have been improved.
- The photography is interesting and revealing, but I'm not sure I'd say it was compelling or exciting. There is a mix of very well thought out and inspired close-ups of key industrial design elements, mixed with a number of rote "place and shoot" captures.
- Such a comprehensive collection begged more narrative commentary on the design itself. Instead the captioning is descriptive more than thoughtful.
- There are a couple of unusual minor gaps, after all the attention to other product lines, the evolution of the iPhone is hurried over
A pleasant surprise was a chapter devoted to the history of Apple packaging (and thus implicitly branding/marketing). I would have loved to have seen this more developed.
I'd say ICONIC is well worth the purchase for the faithful.
I bought my first Apple computer in 1994 (a Macbook duo 230) and owned a lot of Apple products since then. This book was a trip down memory lane with lots of stuff I just forgot I owned (Apple iSight), lots of stuff I wish I owned (Bandai Pipin game console) and lots of stuff I didn’t even know Apple made (Quicktake photo camera). All photos look really fancy and stylish as if they were made by Apple themselves, but were made by author Jonathan Zufi. I would have loved to read all about the products you see exposed on every page, but there isn’t much info. This could be a kind of boring read if you’re not into Apple (although if you like great design, it’s interesting too), but for Apple owners and computer history interested collectors, it’s a great historic document. Could use an update now though.
My biggest regret in reading this amazing coffee table book is I waited so many years after receiving it as a Christmas gift to finally peruse through it! I've been a lifelong Apple fangirl. I started learning computer skills on Apple IIes in grade school. My first home computer was the original Mac 128K, and I've had several Macs throughout the years including the iconic Cube. I've owned a few varieties of iPods (I still like them as independent music devices), iPads, and of course a few iPhone models as well. It was a fun trip down memory lane to see beautiful photos of many of these products and their memorable packaging (especially for the original Mac).
