And with a wide variety of kettlebell exercises to choose from, neither you nor your body will ever get bored.

Kettlebell Training Benefits
How is a kettlebell workout different from a traditional workout? First of all, you need only one tool: the kettlebell. Say goodbye to the gym—you don’t need all of those machines or that expensive membership. Instead, with a set of kettlebells, you can perform hundreds of different exercises, working out not only your arms, but every part of your body. There’s no better way to streamline your workouts than with this book and this one simple tool.

Whether you are a workout fanatic or just starting to get in shape, you know that your body quickly becomes bored with repetitious exercises. If you go to the gym every day, you likely perform the same circuit every time. Eventually, the body gets used to the workout and stops responding. Kettlebell training is varied enough that your body never becomes accustomed to the workout and you never stop building real kettlebell muscle. Continual confusion of your muscles is key to keeping them on point and that’s exactly what you’ll get with this book.

It even includes DIET PLAN suggestions to be followed for Kettlebell training and Weight Loss Management System as an added BONUS.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.

John Powers was born into a low-income family in New York City. He has been involved in all kind of sports his entire life.

Starting with high school football and rugby teams, he was looking for ways to become stronger and faster. His entire workout regimen consisted of bodyweight exercises and calisthenics. He started researching different workout methods and decided that he would try High Intensity Interval training. This definitely revved up his speed and improved his throws. As he continued to study HIIT, he realized that it was the kettlebell workouts that were especially effective, and it was the kettlebells that he didn't mind using, even after a long day of school and practice.

Though John started researching and doing different exercise techniques just so he could improve his game, he also became interested in the exercise regimen as a theory, as a way for people to lose weight and bulk up at the same time. In lieu of a scholarship to a prestigious university, he joined the military, who paid for him, first to attend school, and then to return to the ranks to bulk up other soldiers.

His years of experience and his studies into the theories and mechanics of kettlebells and the body building with the help of calisthenics make him one of the country's foremost experts.

As personal trainer, Powers has transformed hundreds of people's minds and bodies, opening their eyes to the different approach of training.

I’m new to kettlebells, but not new to exercise, and most exercise bores me to tears, but this kettlebell routine is amusing. I do yoga, and if you practice yoga you know it really needs to be augmented with some weights for better tone, but most of us yoga fans don’t want a room full of ugly barbells and we don’t really desire the repetitious up-down of standard weight lifting.

And why should we when we can lift a pretty “cannonball with handles” and swing? I think I was immediately hooked because you can feel the kettlebell pulling you off balance and you can feel your whole body counteracting to it. I found it fun, but I also like what I felt in resistance across my body. It’s not only enjoyable but it feels good.

I was however a little skeptical about starting with 18 pounds, but as the author explains, most of us do this daily when we lift children or, in my case, as a bartender, I haul around cases of beer. Part of adapting to a new routine is trusting the teacher, and John is not only easy to understand and follow, but he’s knowledgeable. This guide has everything a person needs to get started, and I greatly appreciated the quick chapter of various brands and companies that sell kettlebells, because that’s research I really don’t need to do.

Now going back to the “pretty” part of a cannonball with handles: there are some really cute kettlebells out there. The book has pictures of the various exercises, which is super helpful, but I went gaga over the precious pictures of colored kettlebells. Awww. /r/awww on Reddit hasn’t seen anything this cute. Okay, enough of my silliness, but then again, if this wasn’t fun, I wouldn’t be online right now looking for my very own hot pink cannonball.

I’m going to follow this for the next 6 weeks, and then I’ll be back to update my progress. But for now, I love the book. It’s presented in a way that makes it enjoyable to read, it inspires, it motivates, and after my first two sessions following the routines in here, I feel the muscles that are going to be improved, which is not something yoga alone will ever achieve. But most of all, this is a pleasure to do.

UPDATE:: Four weeks in and I love what’s been happening with this routine! The biggest results I see are with strength and muscle development. My arms are developing clearly defined muscles that are hard and sleek. My thighs are also amazing. But the results I’m most impressed with are from core strength. This is by far the most effective method I have ever tried in strengthening core muscles. One of the ways it shows itself is through balance. Since following this routine, I have gained the most amazing stability and all around balance. It is a massive benefit to my yoga.

Didn't get past the casual sexism

A quote:
While men are most likely to pick up as much weight as they can, women tend to underestimate their capability. Since kettlebell movements are functional, mimicking daily activities, women quickly discover that they can handle much more weight than you would have expected. Just think about the typical things you do: • Lift babies and small children • Carry groceries and laundry baskets • Stretch to vacuum, dust and wash windows • Bend and squat to do all sorts of cleaning and other chores Also, think about how heavy your hand bag or computer case may be and you will realize that you are much stronger than you ever would have imagined.
As we are not stuck in the 1950s and there is more to women than being a domestic slave I did not continue with this book and will look for something else!

Good information

This book is a great introduction to using kettlebells. It has a history of kettlebells, info on buying the right one, pictures, explanations, and YouTube links for all of the exercises, workout routines, a section on nutrition, and even advice for women who are pregnant. I hit a plateau in my bodyweight workout and wanted something different. All in all it's a useful book that could sell for more.
