What if you could unlock the science of effective thinking and harness your mental processes for greater success at work and in life? Join two experts in the field of applied cognitive science as they reveal the hidden mechanisms behind our thoughts and actions.
Beginning with the fundamental question of what makes some individuals excel in areas where others falter, this book explores how our mental frameworks - shaped by experience, knowledge, and the intricate workings of the mind - directly impact our effectiveness in everyday situations. From delivering a compelling presentation to leading a team through a challenging project, our cognitive models dictate our outcomes more than we realize.
Drawing on the latest research in cognition and learning, Dr. Jim Heal and Dr. Rebekah Berlin provide a roadmap for refining the mental models that shape our daily decisions. Along the way, we'll explore essential concepts of the mind like effective learning processes, the structure of memory, and how to manage cognitive load. With each chapter, you'll gain practical strategies to enhance your thinking, improve your communication and better understand the complexities of human interaction.
Whether you're an educator, a manager, or a leader, Mental Models will equip you with the tools to elevate your effectiveness and unlock new opportunities for growth. Step beyond conventional wisdom and discover how a deeper understanding of your mind can transform your life.
It’s a simple truth, that I too often neglect, but the universal commonality about everyone we teach is they have a brain, and this is like a demystifying instruction manual for how the brain works and learns. I wish I had read this 10 years ago!
I’ve stumbled upon bit and pieces of this, though mostly watered down, and jacked some of these tools from great teachers, but this explicitly and comprehensively puts the tools of cognitive science all in one very helpful place. It’s relevant and the authors practice what they preach, making the content really approachable and applicable.
Highly recommended for teachers, leaders, parents and anyone who helps others learn.
If you’re still reading and the length of this review hasn’t caused cognitive overload, I also need you to know that Cullen is the book club king, and he is 99% responsible for my encoding of this new learning to my long term memory.
By putting the described models into practice, this well-designed and efficiently structured book offers concise, precise, and explicit mental model descriptions, including examples and non-examples, the “why” behind what works and what doesn’t, step-by-step implementation guidance, and takeaway summaries to ensure new learning sticks. Grounded in research and rich in practical application, this valuable roadmap for building and strengthening schemas can be used to navigate any learning destination.
I will never think the same way about designing learning experiences again. Mental Models is so relatable. Rebekah and Jim brilliantly communicate key understandings of cognitive science and what to do about it.
I’ll be over here being a museum curator, channeling my inner meteorologist and tending the garden. Huge thanks Rebekah & Jim for your work, research, and expertly crafted badges and models! I think I’ve grown more in my practice in the last month than I have the last year.
Mental Models by Rebekah Berlin and Jim Heal is a practical exploration of how we think, learn, and teach in our day to day lives, including at our jobs. Rebekah Berlin makes cognitive science accessible for anyone who is learning anything. This book explains how the mind works and it empowers you to work with your mind more effectively. Mental models get framed as essential tools for navigating complexity instead of abstract theories. This is a book that values both self-awareness and intellectual growth. Attention and working memory are topics often mentioned in educational circles but rarely explained with such precision or applied to adults learning on the job, how to lead professional development effectively, or effective feedback loops. This book illuminates the invisible work of building mental structure and how managers/anyone teaching someone a new skill can support that process for their colleagues. The guidance in this book is invaluable for anyone who wants to become a more effective coach, teacher, or learner.
