Rate this book
This is a book for anyone who doesn’t want to live a boring life.Forget the couch and the TV and say goodbye to punching the clock. Rule 62 is a wake-up call and manifesto for living life to the he who makes the most memories wins. It's time to get out of bed every morning like the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme song is playing on your alarm.

Equal parts raucous and soulful, essayist Jared Dillian shines a provocative light on some of the deepest questions humans have asked. What does it mean to live a life full of meaning? How does love really work? What is genuine wealth—and how should you acquire and use it? How do you avoid regrets? How do you respond to betrayal, trauma, or illness?

Over the course of 79 introspective and often hilarious essays, drawing deeply on his own experiences with setbacks and success, Dillian shares surprising and thought-provoking answers to all these and more.

discovering the importance of saying yes to things. Why character matters as much as smarts. The counterintuitive way to let go of resentments. Why hating other people's success condemns you to mediocrity. The power of just doing the thing already. The importance of being worthy of compliments. Why the unplanned is better than the planned. How living in the present brings peak performance. Why dying is one of the most important things we will ever do.

And more—much more—in a dazzling and page-turning collection from one of the most entertaining writers at work today.

Written by a finance guy and suggested by my husband—who is forever sending me financial newsletters and articles that I grasp at an elementary level—I was a little hesitant. But then I discovered it was a collection of essays from the author’s life and viewpoints, and suddenly, I was intrigued.

Many of the chapters touched on ideas I already incorporate into my daily life. Some were simple, like Say Yes, while others, like letting go of things I can’t control, felt a little more complex (and, let’s be honest, still a work in progress).

Now, the chapter titles might make you think you’re picking up a self-help book—Do Hard Things, Show Up, Finish What You Start, Never Enough, Living in the Present—but these essays aren’t your typical feel-good fluff. The author delivers his insights with a directness that sometimes felt like a verbal shove but surprisingly, I often found myself nodding along. Even when I didn’t fully agree, I could appreciate the perspective and the way it was presented.

Yes, there were a couple financial phrases and names that went over my head, but that’s what Google is for, right? No harm, no foul.

What really set this book apart was the author’s openness in sharing personal struggles—mental illness, the challenges of long-term medication, and the not-so-pretty realities of life. He doesn’t sugarcoat, and that honesty made for a compelling read.

Jared Dillian is the best. He makes me laugh. He has some spicy opinions, some of which I disagree with wholeheartedly, but most of them ring true when you consider what he is saying. I love a book with truth bombs--Glennon Doyle has gifted me many over the years, along with Peter Attia and Rachel Hollis. Dillian is right there with the truth bombs. He gives you things to think about and fresh perspective. And honestly, right now my life has been a bit chaotic and stressful, so this read really came at a perfect time. His thoughts on helping others, charity, happiness, accepting reality, grit and busyness, mental health and kindness really shine a light on how we choose to act and what makes sense. I marked about twenty different pages in the book to come back to and read again. Plus it's just delightfully fun to hear his unique voice coming through--this guy is hilarious. Highly recommend this book.

Excellent advice for living

I’ve been a Jared Dillian fan for years via his newsletters and now Substack. Still his “Rule 62’s” essays (meditations) are all new and it’s clear from beginning he is aiming higher and exploring deeper waters here. Mr Dillian covers a number of topics and his thoughts and advice will no doubt help even the most grounded of us make better decisions as well as better appreciate the many individual blessings we have. That being said, this is still classic Jared Dillian writing and he has not lost his unique voice nor clever humor. I’ve just finished and plan to jump right back in for a second round. Congrats on this great collection that I expect readers will come back for your unique perspectives and good humor again and again

Jared demonstrates his astounding range once again with Rule 62. Each of these essays illustrate how we can develop a healthier mind to construct the mental frameworks required to live a better life. All if us know the path to a healthy mind is arduous, and Jared’s vulnerability as a writer make his arguments all the more profound. Great authors make you look in the mirror and Jared’s writings not only do that, but they are written in a way that makes his lessons truly practical for the reader.

Haven't read a book yet from Jared that I didn't like and this one was no exception. I wanted to spread my reading of this one out a bit and just tackle a couple of essays a day. I figured I would read a couple and let myself process the ideas and opinions over the rest of the day. It didn't work. I couldn't put it down and read the whole thing in less than a week. Luckily we can always read books again, so that is the new plan....

Highly recommend this and really any of his other stuff.

Great book that people should really sit and think about. May not agree with everything, but it should make you think about your life, what's really important and how to live a happy, fulfilling life.

Jared’s thoughts are always fun to read. Don’t agree with all of them or parts of them. But this book is a joy and provides many things to consider as we live our lives.
