“In this short story from the thrilling anthology FaceOff, edited by David Baldacci, John Lescroart and T. Jefferson Parker team up along with their characters—Wyatt Hunt, hero of three of Lescorart’s Hunt Club thrillers; and Joe Trona from Parker’s Edgar Award–winning Silent Joe.”
Available as a standalone short story which may interest fans of these two writers and devotees of their familiar characters. Here they join forces on a fishing trip to Mexico and confront drug cartels threatening a local community.
It is clear that both writers love sport fishing and within this activity the two protagonists gel perfectly before they must work together against the gun totting ‘narcotrafficantes’.
I liked the bloody nose these lazy drug bullies received, who spread fear through violence and fear, but in this case lose out to the swift planning and staunch opposition of two ‘gringos’. Hunt and Trona have no dog in this fight, but through bravery and their superior training show compassion to the villages to right a wrong and keep them safe.
Great action set pieces and plenty of lighter moments too. This is a worthwhile read, a thrilling adventure and a unique collaboration for one vacation only.
First introduction to both authors and protagonists in this collaborative short story gave me a positive feeling about both the writing and the characters. Enjoyed how they began with a bit of ill will and ended with a positive shared experience. I plan to check out further readings from both Lescroart and Parker. Nicely done.
One thing about the Face Off anthology - it has introduced me to a bunch of authors I have never read before. Will I read them again? Some of them certainly. As for the stories this like most of them is pretty average, and I suspect doesn't allow the authors the same freedom that writing solo would. Face Off #9
