The Ex-it Strategy: A Second Chance, Reality TV Romance

Rate this book
They will get their second chance on live TV.
Amelia Russell is tired of barely getting by.
It’s been five, torturous years since Amelia lost her purpose–and five years since she let go of the man she thought she would spend her life with. Working two jobs she has no passion for to stay afloat in Los Angeles while battling a chronic health condition, applying to her favorite reality TV show’s casting call seems like a fantastic, if ill-advised, way out of her misery.
Except if she actually gets chosen to compete on The Ex-it Strategy for the final prize of half a million dollars, she will be living for a whole month in a beautiful mansion alongside eleven strangers … and her ex. It seems doable, since Amelia has no intention to involve the one ex she actually loved; but what is television with an extra sprinkle of drama?

Walker Moore hasn’t mastered the art of moving on.
While despite a terrible loss he has found balance and fulfillment working at his family’s small atelier, his thoughts and his heart are still reserved for one person only. When he is offered the chance to participate in a new show that showcases local small businesses, his brothers encourage him to take the leap. Only Walker finds himself catapulted on live television in a very different environment than what he expected … and right in front of Amelia, the girl he thought he would spend his life with–and who left him with little explanation. He might not be ecstatic to be forced into the media circus of reality TV, but the chance to rekindle his relationship with Amelia is a possibility too good to pass up.

Through various challenges every pair of contestants must face, forced proximity, and lingering glances, it’s clear to everyone that the fire of Amelia and Walker’s feelings for each other can never be extinguished. Can Walker make Amelia see they were meant to be all along before the month is up? Can Amelia find the courage to tell Walker the truth about their breakup and give herself a second chance?

Thanks to L.V. Oaks for the e-arc ✨ (all thoughts are my own)

The Ex-it Strategy is a funny, lighthearted romance for fans of reality TV and its potential for drama, second-chance romances, and quick reads with low(ish) stakes.

The narration was witty and heartfelt, and I love that the chapters had titles, most of which were hilarious. I enjoyed seeing the BTS look at a reality TV show, the side characters were entertaining, and there was a sprinkle of drama, which I’m glad didn’t overtake the plot. Amelia yearns for community because she’s lonely, and I’m happy she was able to make meaningful friendships during the show’s filming. Typically, women are pitted against each other on reality TV shows, so I’m happy the competition was healthy and helped her build relationships. Amelia and Walker were sweet together; they still know each other very well, and their lingering feelings created convincing tension.

It took a while to reveal the reasons behind their breakup, which was a little anticlimactic. While it fits Amelia’s character, I felt like there were other options, and the breakup should’ve been a last resort, which left me feeling frustrated with her. I also feel like they picked up right where they left off. I expected more discussion on how they would build a life together after the show; it all unfolded a bit too neatly/fast for me!!

This was such a cute book! The setting being a reality TV show got my attention. The drama a tv show could potentially do to make the show more dramatic is exactly what happened here lol. Add on the second chance & forced proximity tropes on top and you have DRAMA!!! The flirting and banter from Amelia and Walker was chef's kiss and it didn't get past ANY character in The Mansion.

One of the main things that was a little distracting was some parts could have been given more attention to kind of fill the holes in some scenes and had me re-read it a couple of times to make sure I didn't miss anything. There were also a couple of typos which also made me do a double take.

Also, if you're looking for spice - there's only one or two open door scenes and it was a SLOOOOOOW burn. If that's your jam, you're in for a treat.

This was such an adorable book🥹I absolutely love Oaks' writing style. You know that feeling when you get home after a long day and change into comfortable clothes? That's exactly what the writing feels like — comforting.

I really loved how there was something for everyone to relate to. There were more emotional, raw moments for some to connect with, but also those everyday, mundane things, like stubbing your toe (which, as someone who stubs her toe weekly, I really felt haha).

I absolutely loved the main characters, Amelia and Walker. Amelia was reserved, always trying to handle difficult situations on her own just so she wouldn't burden anyone or make their lives harder. Ugh, I wanted to hug her so badly. I was so happy she made real friends through the show🥹
And Walker. He was someone who wasn't capable of hating (except maybe Brandon😆) and who valued his privacy, yet he chose to stay on The Ex-It Strategy for Ames. The yearning between these two was unbelievable😮‍💨🔥the things he said to Ames, and the way he worried about her😩He loved her so much!

There wasn't a single thing I disliked, but I did find myself wanting more. More words, I guess? Understandably, this was very focused on Amelia and Walker and their romance. But I did crave a few more scenes with the other contestants, especially Mason👀

Overall, this was such a heartwarming read that made me tear up multiple times but also giggle out loud. If you're in the mood for a sweet second chance romance, pick this one up!🫶🏼🩷

Thank you so much to L.V. Oaks for the opportunity to read this book in the exchnage on an honest review.

This story follows Amelia who decides to take a risk and apply for a reality TV show that is similar to Love Island and Big Brother. The only catch is she has to pick an ex to join her. Amelia has luckily been chosen and now has the opportunity to win a much needed cash prize. However, when she arrives she is faced with a huge surprise.

If I'm being honest, I devoured this book. I almost abandoned all responsibilities to read it in one day. It was face paced, easy to read, and the chemistry between characters felt real. Between the challenges, no contact with the public, having to sleep in one bed, and the awareness they were always being filmed it really did feel like a reality TV show.

The only thing I didn't like about this book is that I wished it had a little more about what was happening in The Mansion.

I received a review copy and I am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts are my own.

I absolutely love a second chance romance!! There’s just something special about finding your way back to your person.

Amelia and Walker went through a lot of struggles both separately, during their time apart, and also together, when they were trying to work things out. I really loved how kind, understanding and patient Walker was. Even though he’s more of a cinnamon roll MMC, I loved how protective he was of Amelia

The reality TV/dating show setting was so unique and fun! Each of the contestants had just enough personality and flair to be able to appreciate what they brought to the story!

This book places a playful twist on the classic second chance romance trope. This sweet, charming fun romcom gives you witty banter between characters and an undeniable love between Walker and Amelia.

The Ex-it Strategy features Amelia Russell, a simple girl willing to enter a reality TV show and live with her ex for one month and Walker Moore, the love of her life and NOT who she signed up to be on the show with. Both main characters are thrown for a loop when their eyes meet

If you are a fan of books with a slow burn, second chance romance that has the added twist of finding love again while being filmed 24/7, you'll love The Ex-It Strategy!

First of all, I want to thank L.V. Oaks for the opportunity to be part of the ARC squad.

I didn’t really know what to expect from this book-I thought it would be a funny story about a reality show and second chances. I must admit, I’m truly impressed with how it turned out. The story even made me cry a few times.

I really appreciate that the main female character had her own struggles. Sometimes things became too much for her, which led her to make certain choices. However, the progress she makes in learning from her mistakes is clearly visible throughout the story.

How did a reality show become my reality, too?

I was lucky enough to be part of this story from the very beginning; first as a beta reader, then as an ARC reader. I’m incredibly grateful to the author for trusting me twice ❤️!

This book moved into my heart right after the first chapter — settled in comfortably, got a Netflix subscription, grabbed a few blankets and a bucket of popcorn.

This is a second chance romance, but don’t worry, clichés aren’t the main characters here. Amelia is. She’s trying to survive not only the world of reality TV, but also the shadows of her past. A past that just happens to be extremely handsome — and just walked back into her life.

L.V. Oaks’s writing style is like the perfect latte: sweet, sassy, with just the right amount of caffeine to keep you reading the whole book in one sitting. The dialogue sparkles with life, the characters are beautifully flawed and human, and the emotional journey? It’s not just a curve — it’s a rollercoaster I wasn’t mentally prepared for (but I’d get on again and again).

Even as a beta reader, I knew this story was special. But reading it again as an ARC confirmed it: this is the kind of romance novel that feels genuinely good to hold in your hands. It’s entertaining, yes — but it also stays with you long after you turn the last page.
Bonus points for including a medical condition I had never heard of before, the book actually taught me something new.

🎬 Recommended if you love:
• second chance romances
• witty banter mixed with slow burn
• heartfelt yet lighthearted love stories
• and if you’ve ever wanted a real peek behind the scenes of reality TV.

Read it. Laugh. Fall in love. Just don’t miss it. ❤️

MY FIRST ARC!!

This book was a doozy. I got about six chapters in and wondered how I’d finish it but instead, got to go on this beautiful journey with Ames and Walker.

Amelia is a hard done by gal with a disability and life has thrown some shit her way. Poor chook works millions of hours and live paycheck to paycheck and if that isn’t relatable as hell for me. She’s sweet and pushed the love of her life out of her circle because she was embarrassed about her life. We’ve all been guilty of pushing people away who care about us so I felt that shit in my soul.

Walker is a honey, works hard and pines like a full blown forest. What’s not to love about a brooding simp of a man who got tattoos for the one who got away?

Throw them into a cross between love island, ex on the beach and F boy island reality show and let the slow burn fkin burn. Ames and Walker have to win challenges against other ex-couples to try win $550k. She needs it for her financial struggles, he was hoodwinked into being on the show.

The girlhood in this one made my heart sing. Esme and Chloe particularly just had Ames’ back and loved her, flaws and all. Allison pulled the third act reality check of the century and imo saved the day.

A silly little love story to warm your heart and make you believe in love again.

Reality show enthusiasts will enjoy this little love story as Amelia signs up for a reality show in hopes of winning the prize money to help her get out of her rut and living paycheck to paycheck (very relatable and understandable). The catch is it’s a reality show where you compete with your ex and the producers decide to bring the ex Amelia least expected: Walker. Poor Walker was essentially kidnapped by the producers to do the show but he soon finds himself back in front of the girl he’s been pining after for years after their abrupt breakup where he knew she was the one who got away (I mean hello he got tattoos to remember her by! *swoon*).

Amelia was so relatable in her determination to avoid asking for help and wanting a way to live the life she’s wanted. While also leaving her comfort zone to be on national TV, she’s also dealing with all the mixed emotions that comes with having an ex she didn’t expect there with her and her chronic tinnitus that’s only made worse by the show’s production. Walker is such a sweet man and he pivoted quick from the terror of being brought on the show to making the most of it with Amelia. He knew how much it meant to her, even if he didn’t know the why, and he remembered all the little details about Amelia and did his best to do everything he could for her. They were genuine and honest in their intentions and I loved the girlhood aspect as Amelia finally started finding herself and learned to open up.

If you like a slow burn with pining, longing glances, yearning for the one who got away, second chances, and a relatable FMC with a sweetie for a MMC, then this book will be a little cozy hug for you. If you’re looking for a little competition and don’t know what to with yourself now that Love Island US season 7 is over, this book will keep that vibe going!

Thank you to the author for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!

I throughly enjoyed this book! It had so many laugh out loud moments and moments that had me swooning. 🤭

This book is definitely a book that needs to be on everyone’s summer reading list! It is perfect for people like me who like all the drama and fun challenges in reality dating shows. The author was so original and came up with the most fun challenges for the contestants. The chapter titles were also hilarious and fit so well 😂

The main characters Amelia and Walker were both such amazing characters that I found myself quickly loving and rooting for! Amelia was honestly such a sweetheart with a strong heart. She was also so caring over others which was so cute! Walker was so protective and he had a bit of a shyness to him that I liked (I feel like a lot of book mmc’s aren’t like this, and it felt refreshing to see it switched up). I loved how even though Walker was a bit shy he still was protective over Amelia and would stand up for her.

I also really liked how the author wrote about topics like lesser known conditions like Tinnitus and more known ones like anxiety. I really like seeing authors raise awareness on topics like these because I feel like there are quite a lot of people in the world who can relate.

I would definitely recommend reading this book!

Thank you so much to the author for an arc of this book!🥹

L. V. Oaks craftfully introduces former lovers Amelia and Walker in their different walks of life, then throws them together for a tantalising reality show. The tension in the luxury mansion is palpable. Is it worth publicly exploring your past and relationships for a life-changing potential payout?

Growing up without a television, I can't hide my curiosity of different show formats and how they work. This intriguing concept and character development had me hooked. I also very much enjoyed the twists and turns along the way.

If you're a fan of tropes like second chance romance, slow burn, forced proximity, dual POV, open door, ... then this irresistible novel is for you!

Despite Amelia's flaws, we're rooting for her: for her financial stability, for her chance at a new life, and a happy ending for her. Can she overcome the demons of her past and give herself a chance?

They are thought-provoking questions which Oaks poses: why not give ourselves the same grace and second chances, which we so freely dish out for others? Do we deserve happiness? Would you live with your ex for a month for the chance of winning half a million dollars?

Spoiler alert: I particularly enjoyed the refreshing dynamics between the women, supportive and empowering, which tbh was not what I expected from a reality show setting.

This book was such a blast! I swooned and laughed out loud numerous times and I just loved the entire idea of this story!

I never read a book that takes place as a reality TV show. So the whole concept was so intriguing to me. I loved all the characters. And the little dynamics that were created along the way. Some wanted to be there, others not so much. So lots of drama and interesting moments came to light.

Walker and Amelia are perfect for each other. I loved that despite their situation and not having talked in five years, they fell back together almost seamlessly. Yes they had things they needed to work through, and it was a slow process from the beginning until the end. But goodness I loved every second.

I liked the tension and banter. But also how just calming they were together and how much it seemed natural, like they’re each other’s home. And they were finally coming back to it after a long trip. It was so swoony watching them gravitate together and overcome all the obstacles thrown at them.

The cast was fun and I loved them all! Even the unlikeable ones. They were still so interesting I couldn’t help it. I thought the obstacles of the show were silly, but that’s reality TV for you, so I thought the story was very well done in that regard.

Honestly this book was a blast, filled with representation of tinnitus, some parental grieving, deep talks, and some spicy moments that were well worth the wait! I highly recommend if you’re looking for a book to just naturally absorb you into it’s universe!

📚ARC Read📚

Amelia applies to be on The Ex-It Strategy, a reality show that keeps exes together for a month with the chance to win 550k. Upon arrival to the show Amelia find out the ex she’s paired with is not who she put on the application but Walker, the one who she let go years before. Walker will do what he cans to get her back but will they be able to have a strategy to make it out of the game together?

I loved the fun vibe of big brother meets a relationship show. The side characters really have the personalities to make it feel like they a really are all living in a mansion for a month together. The author really put the little details to feel like a true reality show. Walker and Amelia both still have feelings each other but you are living for the shore burn off then figuring it out. Not a book in my usual wheelhouse but enjoyed it ask the same. A fun easy read to definitely add to your TBR.

You ever wanna just read a reality show? Here’s your chance! L.V. Oaks tells the second chance story of Amelia and Walker with an amazing twist. This is the first book I’ve read thats been based in like a reality TV show setting and I am HOOKED.

But really quick, let’s talk about the BANTER and the side friendships?? LOVE. Amelia and Walker are literally so perf for each other and I can say as a viewer of the Ex-It Strategy I was rooting so hard for them.

this book was really adorable. i just finished watching Love Island, so the live reality tv aspect of this totally hooked me. i loved Walker and Amelia’s relationship, Walker is just such a good man🥹🥹 the fact that he really never stopped thinking about her and NEVER stopped loving her was super fricken cute.

there were just some parts I thought were too dramatic for what warranted, especially the “twist” and the reason she ended things in the first place. just sooooo anticlimactic. i also wanna state that my opinion is coming from someone who regularly reads dark romance, so i think this was just meant for a softer audience. i enjoy regular contemporary books dont get me wrong, and i really wanted to like this, but it was *too* soft for me. the angst was bleh, the drama was bleh, and the ending was bleh

overall 3 stars. thank you to this author for giving me an ARC!! i’m gonna head over to her paranormal romance book and see if thats more my speed :)

i loved this. SO MUCH. my only qualm with it is that i can’t also watch the actual reality show.

i absolutely loved our characters, Amelia is such a ray of sunshine with real insecurities, and Walter is THE man. if you want an obsessed man, Walker is your guy.

the story is such a unique concept, i loved the other contestants, the whole vibe of the mansion, the challenges were sooo fun!

second chance romance is not my all time favorite genre, but i really loved this. the reason for the breakup was actually quite sad but i feel like it made sense, in a way.

i have to also mention, that l.v. oaks is so so funny! not in a try-hard way but it comes naturally. the chapter titles were very fitting and fun, i loved them. more books should have chapter titles.

oh and i loved all the mixed media! the tea room, the social media comments, the graphics were insanely cute too.

overall i loved the whole book and i wanna give a huge thanks for being able to read the arc!!🤍

The Ex-It Strategy by LV Oaks is a cute and humorous rom-com centered around two exes reconnecting - on national TV, no less!

The premise is fun, and I found myself smiling at the banter and chemistry between the main characters. They were likable and engaging, which made following their journey enjoyable.

That said, the pacing felt a bit drawn out in places, and there were some plot points that seemed to be brought up repeatedly without being fully developed. A few threads felt like they could’ve used more depth or resolution. Still, the story overall kept my interest, and I appreciated the heart behind it.

3.75 stars, rounded up for GR.

Thank you L.V. Oaks for the advanced copy of the Ex-It Strategy.

I had such a fun time reading this book, encompassing the vibes of your favorite rom-com on paper!

Our FMC, Amelia Russell, has hit rock bottom and uses her application to her favorite reality TV show to spice up her life, not believing she (and her ex) will get cast. Walker Moore, our MMC, is trying to balance keeping his family business afloat and familial loss. Once these two characters get together it is easy to see that no love had vanished, despite the 5 year that has passed.

Oaks does a great job navigating the complexities of a second-chance romance with the added element of the dynamic being aired on national television.

I knew from the first page that I would love this story and, indeed, it's a sweet and lovely second-chance romance that is perfect for a hopeless romantic girl like me 😍.

Five years ago, Walker was left heartbroken when Amelia suddenly decided she was no longer happy with their relationship. He was hopeful but never once tried to get in contact with Amelia, until he received an offer that changed his life...for the better?

Amelia was desperately in need of money, not only to cover her medical expenses but also for her to move into a place where she could call a home. When her application to join a reality show was accepted, she was in for the win...but there was an unexpected twist. Now she's torn between winning the money, or losing the one that was always in her heart...again.

I loved Amelia and Walker!

This was a really well written, fun, character-driven story with a more unusual plot-line and I flew through it. I loved that we got to see the development of the side characters relationships as well as Walker and Amelia, and I loved that both Walker and Amelia were such strong, consistent characters throughout. I didn't love all the switching between past and present but I think it was really effective in showing the development in their relationship. I really enjoyed the creativity of the mini-games and producer hijinks!

I can't wait to read more by LV Oaks.

The Ex-It Strategy is humorous from start to finish. Amelia and Walker are two characters anyone can relate to that have been dumped or still in love with that person. Amelia is my favorite character because she embodies a lot of love but also struggles with her life and tries to do it all on her own, which I feel like we can relate to. She is a true person and just full of love. My favorite quote is, "I'm not lost now. I'm right here,"I say, covering my microphone refusing for these words to belong to anyone else except us." Whenever your ready, Ames." Her lips part in a shaky breath. She wasn't expecting me to say that.

Such a cute second chance love story. This book was a welcome refreshing break. I was instantly hooked by the plot of this book. It definitely gives Love Island vibes but not in a bad way. I loved the girls actually being girls girls throughout this book, despite the competition they were in they stayed true to themselves and forged friendships with each other. it was the boys who attempted to manipulate the game.

I absolutely loved this book! I wasn’t sure about the whole reality tv thing but that has actually become one of my favorite theme/trope to read about!

Amelia and Walker are ex’s. Amelia signs up for a TV show and is picked. There are so twists as to how Walker gets there since not the most current ex but it definitely works out in the best way! 🩷

The tension between Amelia and Walker is definitely felt through the book. I loved getting to watch their relationship develope! Easy a 5/5 star read for me!

Thank you L.V. Oaks for the ARC! I just loved this book!

ok... ok... I binged this. This cute little second chance romance felt faster paced, but it drew me in just like watching the actual TV and seeing it play out. yes... this story is based on a reality TV series idea. In my opinion? Cute! Sometimes people have reasons for doing things but come out with something so much better. This was that, and it felt real aside from the reality TV show thing. Exes forced together, forced to confront the past and admit truths. Will it end in love reunited or someone running off with the money... *sigh* This really was cute.
