Rate this book
Captain No Beard and his crew of loyal pirates heave anchor for another adventure, this time in the icy waters of the Arctic. Captain No Beard's steering a course due north, sailing by the light of the North Star. Everyone on the crew wonders what the captain's up to, especially as he gets embarrassed when they ask. When the captain finally admits his plan, the crew discovers he plans to steal the aurora borealis, the beautiful northern lights that brighten the arctic sky. They're all shocked. They may be pirates, but even they know stealing is bad. Besides, how can anyone steal the lights from the sky?

A charming, engaging tale about doing what's right, Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis is the latest installment in Carole P. Roman's award-winning pirate series. The series presents real-life problems in an imaginary setting and encourages discussion with both parents and educators.

Captain No Beard blew on his fingers to warm them up.
Captain No Beard and the crew of the Flying Dragon are on another adventure...but this one is taking them on a path they never could've expected.
"Iceberg, off the ship's bow!"
The Captain is up to something...but no one can think of that that is.

All the crew knows is that they are sailing due north, under the light of the North Star and it's getting colder by the second.

The Captain has plans to steal - the aurora borealis - but they don't like his plans.
All the crew agreed, "Arrrgh, arrrgh, arrrgh!"
Will the crew see the aurora borealis? Or will there be a mutiny on the Captain's hands??

As a huge fan of winter and anything to do with the North - this one was was (of course) a huge hit for me.

It was fun to watch the crew sailing where they never dared before - and dealing with situations that they never expected to handle.

Also, I (of course) loved the way Lemaire illustrated this wintry adventure - especially the borealis - beautiful!

All in all, this was a fabulous addition to the No Beard family!

Captain No Beard and The Aurora Borealis is another great book by Carole P. Roman! I hold this author in high respect as her books are always such a thrill to read with her entertaining characters.

I received this review from the author/publisher for the purpose of this review. All comments and opinions are entirely my own.

In Aurora Borealis, Captain No Beard plans to steal the Northern Lights even though he knows that it's wrong. His crew-mates all recognize this and stand up to him despite the pressure that he is the captain. Their urge to do what is right shows the heart of the book and will encourage younger children to stand up for what they know is wrong. It also puts a very bold point on the fact that stealing is wrong, even if it's just "borrowing" without permission. Another learning aspect from this book that I thought worthy of mentioning is some brief information on the North Star. Captain No Beard tells us it's real name and a short and simple reason why it always points North.

So overall, I rate Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis 5 out of 5 stars and anxiously look forward to her future books!

Thanks so much for reading!

Every time I read one of the Captain No Beard stories, I think this is a really great story. Can it get any better then this? Yes, each of the stories are great, but I have to say hands down, this is one of my favorite ones. I really like this story and the message that you receive when you read it.

Winter is coming and what better time to read this story with your children. On this adventure, the captain and his crew head north, while dealing with cold weather and icebergs. While traveling, they learn about the North Star, how it is wrong to steal, and the aurora borealis. Children will not only learn new things, but there is an art project that they do at the end that you can have your children do.

Just like the other books, this one has great artwork. The cover alone made me want to read the story. When you open the book, you get that nice winter feel from the pictures. The little snowflakes, the icebergs, and the warm clothes the characters wear.

I really enjoyed this book and do think that it should be added to your shelf.

What a terrific children’s book. I’m sure that all young readers will want to read this book over and over again. It’s another great title Carole Roman has added to the Captain No Beard collection.

In this book, we are taken on a fun adventure to see the northern star and experience the Aurora Borealis. This offers our young readers a lesson too about these wonderful natural events. Having said that it doesn’t get bogged down in facts. The story is light and easy to read. I can imagine a young reader really connecting with this tale.

The illustrations are bright and funny. They really add to the overall theme of the book. I loved the details and close ups of the characters. These images are really going to engage young readers.

As a children’s author myself I think that one of our roles is not only entertain but to develop a strong love of reading in our young audience. Carole Roman has achieved this and should be congratulated for her wonderful efforts.

I highly recommend this book. It certainly deserves five stars.

About the Author:

Award winning author Carole P. Roman is a former teacher who became a businesswoman. Having grandchildren and sharing stories created a whole new career as an author. Her "Captain No Beard" series has become a hit with young readers as well as their parents. Her debut book, "Captain No Beard-An Imaginary Tale of a Pirate's Life" was named to Kirkus Reviews' Best of 2012. "Pepper Parrot's Problem with Patience" received Five Stars from the ForeWord Reviews - Clarion Review. She lives on Long Island with her family.

My Review:

The Captain of a ship is usually the voice of reason in all things confusing or upsetting. He is the one, after all that everyone must depend on. This book in the Captain No Beard series is a touching one, yet thought provoking because the Captain wants to steal something that can't be stolen. Hallie has to be the one to reach out to him and help him see that stealing is wrong and the Aurora Borealis can't be taken home with them. It is a beautiful array of light that is available to a precious few and can only be seen in one special place.

So what is the crew to do? Improvise, of course. So they immediately they set to work on their own creation of the glorious lights, right there in Alexander's room. The Captain No Beard series is a sweet, children's series based on imagination on real life situations. It is a great character series for children!

My very selfish advice to Carole Roman is to drop all activities other than those essential to life and concentrate on writing children's books. She is an existence proof that not all adults grow out of the vivid imagination they had as children. Her books are full of great adventures of the imagination where the stuffed animals are part of the crew of the mighty ship captained by No Beard.
In this case they are on a mission to the frigid Arctic where the captain wants to take the aurora borealis. They chart their path by sighting on Polaris and there are some genuine complaints from the crew about how cold it is. This is done using an excellent combination reference to pirate talk and reaction to the cold. When they see the aurora borealis the crew objects to the captain's plan to take it without permission for that would be stealing. Convinced that they are right the captain relents and they set out to create their own using crayons, a key tool for expressing imagination.
There is nothing more powerful than imagination to generate excitement in the lives of children. In this book Roman uses an imaginary adventure to teach a little science and a lesson about taking things without asking, even though you want it really bad. It belongs in the children's section of every library.

Captain No Beard and Arctic adventures

Author Carole P. Roman brings us another Captain No Beard adventure, blending great story, bright, colorful illustrations, and lessons that all can benefit from.

I've read all of the Captain No Beard series (and passed them on for my twin grandchildren to enjoy). I do believe that this is my favorite to date.

I loved the way the "crew" stood up for what they believed in and didn't back down to Captain No Beard. There are lessons to be learned but author Roman's approach makes it fun and easy to learn those lessons. The main lesson taught in this installment is that stealing is wrong but there are some side lessons about art and imagination.

I did feel the illustrations weren't quite as bright in this book but I still thoroughly enjoyed Captain No Beard/Alexander's adventures.

NOTE: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Captain No Beard is a great pirate with a loyal crew. But he just might have a mutany on his hands if he doesn't reveal their destination. When he tells the crew what he plans to steal they have some misgivings. Can his crew set him straight?

The cartoon-like illustrations are fun and quirky. Children always love pirate stories and this one will be no exception. The author brings in a quick science lesson as well as discussions about stealing. Parents will love the lessons and children will love the illustrations and fun story. I read this book to my 5 and 8 yrs old kids and they enjoyed the story. It provided an opening for us to talk about the northern lights and do a bit more research. I wish that the author had provided some websites or additional information about them, since most children this age will have no idea what an aurora borealis is.

Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis, award-winning book by Carole P. Roman, is number seven in the Captain No Beard series that tells the adventures of an imaginary pirate and his crew. The Flying Dragon is heading North and comes across an iceberg. Brrr, it's so cold. But the Captain is on a mission--he wants to get something and bring it home. The crew is up in arms. You can't take something without permission and besides, how can you take the beautiful Aurora Borealis out of the sky? Hallie has an idea and pretty soon with paper and crayons, the Captain's, oops, Alexander's room has its own Aurora Borealis. The brightly colored whimsical pictures will keep the interest of youngsters as they read or are read to. An engaging, entertaining book to take young readers on a pirate ship ride and remind them that anything is possible with imagination.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

The Captain and his crew are on a new mission. This mission will take them through snow and ice. It will be dangerous. The reward will be worth it though. Captain No Beard and his crew are sailing North. He's decided he wants the Aurora Borealis. The crew explain to him it's wrong to take it without permission. After thinking about it, the crew come up with a way he can have the Aurora Borealis without taking it.

What a perfect book for this time of year. It's colorful illustrations make it easy for littles to follow the story. The writing is just right for littles to get the message that what Captain No Beard wants to do is wrong. Children will love this book.

I found no issues.

I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because it's so colorful and informative. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~

Has Captain No Beard gone to the dark side? The crew learns he’s using the North Star to track a coarse to the Arctic, where he plans to steal the Aurora Borealis. But the gang need not fear as the captain listens to reason, admitting it’s wrong to steal no matter what. Besides, you can’t steal the northern lights, silly pirate.

I enjoyed learning about navigation by stars. And I’ve only caught a glimpse of the northern lights before and imagine it’s quite a spectacle to behold. The illustrations in the book are spectacular. Bold and bright. Your kids will be astounded by them and have so many questions. All easily answered by reading the story.

Another charming learning experience with the Flying Dragon gang.

I grouped my review all together for these books, but each one is super fantastic.

These books are so fantastic. They illustrations are beautiful, and the messages are wonderful. I love the mind of a child. I love how they can bring ordinary things to life. This books shows the adventures of Captain No Beard and his trusted friends.

A child in his room imagining the adventures of the high seas. These books teach children about sharing, not stealing and other things that they need to learn all in a fun and adventurous way. Such a great idea.

Each story has it's own adventure, and they are so fun to follow. I enjoy reading children's books. I am sad that mine are no longer little and I cannot read them with them. BUT, I have lots of nieces and nephews and it's time to share with them.

I love the pirate theme. It's so much fun. If your child likes adventures, and pirates, they will surely enjoy this series, along with learning some valuable lessons.

Roman is back with her seventh installment of her imaginative series, CAPTAIN NO BEARD. This series of stories shows children with vivid imaginations and taking pretend play to the ultimate by creating tales set on a pirate ship. Each of her stories teaches a lesson with this one taking the children on a trip following the North Star. In it, Captain No Beard wants to bring the fascinating light and color show of the Aurora Borealis home to watch forever. The rest of his crew teach him that he can't just steal things he wants, even if it is to just borrow it for awhile. His crew also reminds him of why the aurora borealis is so special and why he can't bring it home. His friends find a way to have their own colorful show at home.

Roman's books never disappoint and this would make a wonderful series to add to your home library. The illustrations tell the story as much as the words do with funny facial expressions and characterizations. This is another great addition to the Captain No Beard series. Our kids were such big fans of the "Backyardigans" TV series on Nickelodeon and this book reminds of that show and the great fun that was had by creating stories with their imagination.

Captain No Beard and his crew are out sailing in the Flying Dragon and the farther north they go, the colder it gets. They even find an ice berg. But Captain No Beard is wanting to "steal" something and everyone knows that's wrong. They don't know what he wants to steal and they refuse to go along with his plans. Then the aurora borealis appears in the sky.....

This is a beautifully written picture book about the aurora borealis and what kids can do with their imaginations. There is also a lesson that stealing is wrong. I love the colorful pictures and the story is so imaginatively put together that kids (and me) will keep on reading it again and again. (I love the aurora borealis).

The way the book teaches about real life problems reminds me of the Berenstain Bears.

Thanks Carole for a wonderful book.

Captain No Beard and his crew are out to sea. But this time they are traveling in waters where icebergs are afloat. The crew is cold and restless wondering where they are traveling. Captain No Beard informs his crew that they are heading north on a mission His plan was to take the Aurora Borealis and all its bright lights home. But, his crew is not interested in taking something without permission. Will Captain No Beard change his mind or lose his crew? You will have to read the story to see.

Author Carole P. Roman teaches children a message about stealing or taking things without permission. Children will also learn about the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. Colorful illustrations help young readers see the world of these pretend pirates and engage them with easy to read sentences.

I am and have been a fan of this authors work from the first book I read and reviewed. Alexander is a young boy/pirate who goes on wonderful adventures through the use of his imagination. He takes a boat load of friends/stuffed animals and two other humans with him on these adventures. Each time we travel with him on an adventure we learn a lesson as he learns one. On this trip he wants to steal the Aurora Borealis. The crew refuses because they know that stealing is not a good thing. As usual they always find a solution to their problems. This is a wonderful book to read to your youngest loved ones.

In this Captain No Beard, the crew is ready for a new adventure. They are heading north, and it is getting cold. Icebergs are floating by, but the crew decides they don’t like Captain’s new mission. He wants to take something that doesn’t belong to him.

This one may be my favorite Captain No Beard adventure yet. In this adventure they learn about the North Star and the Aurora Borealis. There is also a good message about not taking something that isn’t yours. The children all know it is wrong and reinforce that message with Captain No Beard. The story also reinforces the idea that using your imagination is a fun way to spend the day.

Once again, the illustrations are colorful and even take on the icy feel of the story. This is another great Captain No Beard adventure!

A new adventure awaits Captain No Beard and his motley crew. This time, they set sail to the North, where the Captain discovers the colorful Aurora Borealis and wants to take it home. But while stealing the polar light is neither possible nor nice, Hallie has a great idea how they can share its beauty nonetheless.

While the pirate theme will captivate all children, this story also addresses a moral question, but in a very playful and easy-going way. With its vivid and bright pictures, it will surely inspire children to create their own colorful fantastic adventures.

Captain No Beard and his crew return in this delightful and engaging story. I like that the illustrations are bright and colorful but the stories keep getting better. The characters are fun and will entertain young readers as they read about Captain No Beard and his silly crew but there are also lessons to be learned. I think that is all a part of this delightful series and this one does not disappoint! The lessons here are about not taking something without permission that doe snot belong to you. In other words, you should not steal. A valuable lesson for children to learn and what a fun way to learn. I can't wait to see what will happen next in this delightful series!

Carole P. Roman tackles a great moral dilemma in this book, to steal or not to steal. The characters are super cute, a brother and sister on an imaginary pirate adventure. As pirates they are looking for treasure and stumble on the Aurora Borealis. One of the great things about this author is that she teaches children morals but also very educational things in a way that the kids do not even know they are being taught. In this book she teaches them about the north star, the borealis, and about right and wrong. Applause for a great book! Perfect for preschool through age 9. 5 kid fangs.

If you’ve followed my blog for any length of time you’ll know that I’ve reviewed other Captain No Beard stories and when the newest, Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis arrived on my doorstep I was very excited. Captain No Beard, AKA, Alexander once again sets sail with his mates, Hallie, Cayla and the other menagerie of excited animals on board the Flying Dragon ship. The premise is that Captain No Beard wants to capture and bring back the Aurora Borealis to his own bedroom so he can see it again and again, but the whole crew gives him a lesson in why he can’t do this – because to take something that doesn’t belong to you is stealing and it’s wrong. I’m not sure why his mom hasn’t taught him this lesson yet but at least his ‘crew’ knows right from wrong and helps to steer him right.

Full of imaginative details this is yet another fun book that teaches character lessons for children and it’s good for all children as it can be used by Christians as well as those who are not Christians as it has no religious leaning. Once Captain No Beard and his crew moor back in his room, they use their imagination to create their own Aurora Borealis without stealing the real one. Lesson learned. While I do prefer to use character building books that also focus on our faith this is still a very good way to add to those lessons learned and my son likes that there is a boy in the story he can relate to and the bright illustrations keeps both the reader’s and the one being read to attention.

Taking the concept of children (siblings) playing together using their imagination to sail on the sea of counterpane as pirates, the boy, Alexander, leads the crew of imaginary pirates. He is Captain No Beard - after all, a boy has no beard.

They have sailed together through various adventures on the "high seas" and learning some good lessons in behavior, manners, and now a touch of science and geography. In Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis they learn....

--The use of the North Star for navigation
--The real name of the North Star
--That it is wrong to steal and borrow without permission
--What the Aurora Borealis is

Overall all, a pretty good mix of learning wrapped up in the guise of a cute little story. But what else would you expect from a former educator? Teachers teach!

The new adventure of Captain No Beard and his crew takes us to visit the Aurora Borealis. With valuable lessons about the importance of no taking what belongs to others, the importance of using the imagination, all while we visit a magical place.

Captain No Beard continues being the perfect companion to discover life and the world. Of course the other characters are as importants as him.

This time the sentences are more accurate for kids. They are short, simple, understandable and entertaining.

The illustrations are colorful, vivid and beautiful. They bring to life the story and the scenarios.

Overall, another great book for kids and their families.

My daughters and I enjoyed reading "Captain No Beard and the Aurora Borealis" together. It is a fun, imaginative story, mixed with a little bit of education about the northern lights. The book is about the shipmates heading north, toward the North Star. Even though they are pirates, they don't want to follow what the captain wants to do because it isn't right to take things that don't belong to you, so there is a moral educational aspect to the book as well. In the end, the crew comes up with a very fun and colorful solution.
We would recommend this book to kids around ages 4-8 as a fun, imaginative story to read.
