The skies of New Rostov are burning. Its cities lie in ruins. Civilians are scattered, and the CDF is in shambles. Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Hanson must rise as the last officer capable of organizing resistance. The enemy is relentless, the odds are impossible, and the cost of every decision grows heavier by the hour.
Cut off from the CSV Margaret Thatcher, with limited personnel and few supplies, Arthur struggles to stay upright under the pressure of command. Yet, through every loss and every sacrifice, he keeps fighting.
As covert ops attempt to bring distant SATO allies into the fight, Arthur must hold the line against overwhelming odds—and strike from the shadows to hit the enemy where it hurts them the most.
Because heroes aren’t fearless. They’re the ones who fight anyway.
I did not have much hope for this book within the first 40 pages and thought I would struggle to finish it. however, I was pleasantly surprised by the end with how much it improved.
the author is getting better with writing the longer the series goes on. when this series first started, it was a jumbled mess of different tropes and scenes out of other famous works. I'm glad to see the majority of that is in the past.
like I've said in most of my reviews on this series, the political commentary directly ties into current events still happening around the world. and I hate it. it's not subtle. it's very in your face. I don't care what the authors' personal opinions are or even if they agree with what they wrote in the book. if you're going to try to touch on real-world politics in your fictional story, there needs to be far more effort put into making it subtle.
overall, the series has been "meh" but interesting enough to make me read it. I will note, however, that if I was required to pay for these books and they weren't on Kindle unlimited. I would not have made it past the first one.
my recommendation? if it's "free"? why not? if you have to pay for it? nah.
Author is getting better as the story progresses. We’ve moved past the cliches of the first book or two, and his characters seem to be developing a bit along the way. I liked the introduction of a subplot in a different part of the universe, felt well woven into the overall universe. Low rating due to the still predictable plot. Id say this is a fun read and the author shows great potential.
Now we see that a squid can also be a ground pounder. This story takes a turn where the story is on the ground and not in the stars. Up close and unsanitized. We get to see a battle of emotions not just for the "good" guys but from those that think they are right in what they do. We see some old characters dabble in Cloak and Dagger. We see David trying to stay in the boundary that has been set. The pull of Duty and Family. We see what could be the start of what some would call a deep state. This is one of the books that I am not sure what direction the next chapter will take. And that is a good thing not sure who will die next if good will win and if they do would it be a Pyrrhic Victory? This was a very interesting chapter I am looking forward to see what will happen next!!!
Danger Close is Book 4 in The Iron Fleet Series by Daniel Gibbs. This Military SiFi is so well written and exciting. There is chaos in New Rostov and Lt Arthur Hanson is the last officer standing to organize a resistance. One thing that I really like about a Daniel Gibbs story is how realistic the story and procedures are. The fighting is extraordinary and the author's military knowledge shines. Join Lt Hanson and jump into a wonderful story. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Glorious military science fiction with lots of ships blowing up other ships, and marines in power armor blowing up tanks, and tanks blowing up infantry, and snipers blowing up officers and missiles blowing up other missiles. And point defense. And politics: Galters (libertarians) vs. Commies vs. Free Worlds vs. Terrans. Jesus didn't show up in this one, though. Still: Me Like So Much!
Joking aside, great series. I am going to eventually read all of this man's work. Well written and edge of your seat suspense!
Well, at least Jesus hasn't made an appearance in this episode. But the fever is still running high.
Some examples of the defects of this piece. Just the ones that bothered me, of course:
Repetition and obsessions define this series. Phrase (number of times used)
God (145) Hell (56) ran his tongue over his lips (10) Smirk (21) Pray (35) Snicker(19) Pursed lips (32) Lips (74) Licked lips (11) Alloy (25) Space sweater (2) War Patrol references (4) Quantity has a certain quality all it's own Dude, the word is Jackboot not bootjack
High stakes action both on the ground and in space. Arthur Hanson is pushed to the limit again but now in charge of a small ground element. Meanwhile, despite a weak President, help is garnered from the most unlikely places. Sacrifice. leadership under pressure and the cost of war are the themes in this novel.
This book was a great addition to this series as everything starts to turn in the good guys favor at the end . The book had plenty of action both in space and on the captured planet but it is not fully in the hands of the enemy yet because of a few brave military and civilians stand against them.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
