Nicholas Wolfe

Nicholas Wolfe’s path to authorship is as gripping as the story he tells. Wrongly accused and imprisoned, Wolfe was cut off from the world—but not from his imagination. With no access to computers or traditional writing tools, he saved what little he had to buy notebooks and pencils, crafting Shatter entirely by hand, page by page. Fantasy became both his escape and his way of reclaiming identity. What started as a lifeline in confinement evolved into a raw, personal exploration of fate, power, and self-worth. Shatter isn’t just a novel—it’s a bold testament to the power of storytelling, born from injustice and transformed into art. Now free, Wolfe is dedicated to sharing his voice and world, proving that even in the darkest places, creativity not only survives—it thrives.

The Precursors: Shatter by Nicholas Wolfe - RELEASING: JULY 4th 2025

• I don't normally say "yes" to ARCs. Because, not only is my TBR super long, but also the fear of not enjoying the book and then having to be brutally honest? So scary.

But OH BOY, am I glad I said YES to this one. I thought the book was interesting from the description itself and I had a feeling I was going to enjoy this one. I was right - but it was better than I thought.

We follow Luca, who lives in a world where there are two forms of power: Potentia and Certus. This book feels like your best friend is telling you their craziest life story, in a extremely emersive way.

The way this book was written feels very... poetic. It really makes you stop and think. There are some dark parts, so be careful going into it. But there is also so much beauty in this world and its characters. It's all so raw.

I would've never known this was Nicholas Wolfe's first work had he not approached me and asked me to read the ARC of his very first book.

I recommend this to anyone who loves Fantasy, Romantasy or Dark Fantasy. And if you don't? I still think you should give it a shot.

I wish I could put into words what I felt reading this book, but unfortunately, I can't. So, give it a shot and let me know what you think.

Thank you, again @theprecursorsofficial for giving me the chance to read this beautiful book early. It was a pleasure. I hope you continue to write for us readers.

I had received this book from the author as an Arc, so I really appreciate it, thank you so much to Nicholas Wolfe for providing me a free Arc in exchange for an honest review. Let's dive into the review.

I really like the first quarter of the book, a spoil prince being escort to his grandfather's place to get training and character development, super cool and motivating. Also, the mystery revolving his family was interesting, like who's the father, what's up between his parents, why did his mother did what she did in the prologue?

However, I felt like the story kind of drop it's plot halfway, starting when Luca met Lattrice. It's already put me off a bit when Luca and Lattrice kiss after meeting for one day, but this is just my thing as I am not a huge fan of insta-attraction. But they didn't get further than that as Luca said he love Shari, his childhood best friend basically. Yet, Luca and Lattrice did sleep naked together, they didn't do anything, but they do sleep naked together. I felt uncomfortable in scenes like this, I know that the author's intention could be to show how women and men can still be platonic even with some intimacy, I don't know. But the fact that Luca claimed to be in love with Shari while was ok with being naked with another woman just doesn't fit to me.

I am not a huge fan of Luca and Shari. I found his sudden love for her to be kind of no where, cause he seemed to lust after her more than actually emotionally love her. Luca often described her as curvy, and when he met another beautiful woman, he often compare them to Shari. Also, that one scene where they make love after they just kill a men, all bloody, and going down while the he still bleeding right next to them, that was kind of unnecessary.

Furthermore, I found their relationship to be kind of dramatic at time, when Luca was helping a girl that just got raped, Shari got jealous. Ok, that was very out of pocket, first of all, Shari should also be helping that girl instead of being jealous when her boyfriend was being a decent human being. Her apology after that just also doesn't make sense, I feel like Shari should never get jealous and be angry at that girl in the first place. And then Shari kind of calm down after talking to Lattrice, and during that talk, apparently Lattrice said Luca was stupid for being too dense about Shari's feeling. Ok, what? So he shouldn't have help the girl that just got raped because Shari couldn't have some empathy? What could have been a good call out moment now turn into dismissive, it's like saying Luca is wrong for having compassion and being kind.

Moreover, there was one moment that just bug be the wrong way. When Luca was picking a really revealing outfit for Shari and she didn't want to wear it, saying "Please don't made me do this" and Luca smile??? And then go said "I know you, and there is a part of you who wants this, but you feel like you don't deserve it because of what life has forced you to become. You are wrong." Ok, first, if Shari is not comfortable in that dress, CHANGE IT. Luca wants her to embrace her feminity side or whatever but that's not how it works, like Shari might want it, that does not mean she is ready or comfortable in it, it's her body. Shari end up wearing it because Luca was upset... That just felt somehow manipulative on Luca side. I know that was not the intention, but I think this could have been handle differently. Also that one scene where Luca and Shari had hand sex in the bathtub right infront of two other women but got a pass because they didn't notice it, that was really unnecessary.

There is also this moments in the book that every time the characters go to bed, they would strip and go to bed naked together, like Shari, Lattrice and Luca. Ok, this could have been a good found family moment if it's add on to the plot or developed something further, but the execution just make it sound weird, or maybe that's just me. It just doesn't sit well with me, there are so many ways to demonstrate found family than this, like sitting around a campfire and share stories.

The last thing is how the plot kind of drag on, like they could had get to the king and end him but the crew just kind of drag it out by staying at an inn too long for no specific reason, with unnecessary dramas, even though it made it clear that the villain was a horrible person and they are way ahead. I felt if we cut out the scenes between Luca and Shari, and replace it with more planning for action, training, more unpack about Luca family and his powers (kind of got forgotten along the way), it would have been more interesting.

Overall, this book had a lot of potential to be a great character development and found family, it just needs a bit more reshaping. Thank you the author for sending me this as an Arc in exchange for an honest review, I truly appreciate it, and wish the best for you.

Ok. I am going to be 110% honest here and say that I have not read a true fantasy story in a LOOOONG time.

This blew my mind. The freaking detail alone is mental. These characters were complex; and when I say complex, I mean LAYERS. Layers on layers. This plot? MULTIFACETED. We have humor, we have action, we have romance.

Top tier world building, top tier character chemistry and development, top tier story.

Fantasy lovers, need I say more? Get into this one. If you don't, you're sleeping on a diamond.

I typically gravitate toward non-fiction, so picking up Shatter by Nicholas Wolfe was a bit outside my usual reading lane — but I’m so glad I did. A friend recommended it to me, so I joined the ARC team and from the very first chapter I was hooked. The story immediately pulled me in with its rich world-building, complex characters, and a plot that just keeps you turning pages. I honestly couldn’t put it down — I finished it in just a few days, which is rare for me since it usually takes me about a month to get through a book.

What really impressed me is how Shatter balances adventure, suspense, and deep emotional moments without ever feeling forced. It’s incredible to think this is Nicholas Wolfe’s debut novel — the writing feels mature and polished, and the characters felt so real that I caught myself thinking about them long after I’d finished reading.

If you’re on the fence about reading it, trust me: just go for it. Whether you’re a fan of fantasy or not, there’s so much to enjoy here — found family, personal growth, secrets, and a world that feels alive. Such a fantastic read, and I genuinely can’t wait for the next book in the series. Nicholas Wolfe is definitely an author to watch!

Can’t wait for the book to launch so I can be one of the first to own a hardcover copy of this gem!!

An exciting and gripping fantasy! I enjoyed the characters and loved the magic system! I enjoyed the sage advice and wisdom that was weaved into the story throughout as well.

Luca was one of my favorites! I enjoyed his growth throughout the story and loved how he was a bit of a golden retriever character as well with a softer side.

Shari was fierce and fun. I enjoyed her with Luca.

The relationships between all the characters was interesting. I enjoyed the love and support they all had for one another.

If you enjoy fast-paced adventure, ya romances, found family, friends to lovers, action, hurt/comfort, magic, quests, twists, and more check this one out!

ARC - PUBLICATION DATE 4TH JULY 2025

4 ☆

i was asked by the author to read and review his debut fantasy book and i am so glad i said he's to this opportunity!

this book was exactly what a good fantasy should be, character driven, full of magic and mystery, rivalry and a bit of romance!

the opening is a young luca, training with his mother, this is where you quickly figure out there is more to luca and his power and that whatever power he may harbour is dangerous in the wrong hands. however, the action doesn't start until the day of luca's 18th birthday where you are thrown into magic, action and the twists of luca's world.

the writing style helps you fully immerse into the story right away, i was hooked from the very first chapter. first person narrative is a favourite for me as it feels like i am inside the characters head and i can connect with the story on a more personal level.

the story is compelling, meaningful, complex and really really well written!

I was sent Shatter by the author Nicholas as an ARC and I'm so glad.
Shatter was a fast paced read full of adventure, magic and nice amount of spice.

Luca is a prince who will learn to harness one of two powers, Potentia (like his father the King) or Certus (like his mother the Queen). On the night before his 18th birthday, he is kidnapped and that is where the adventure begins.

From there we begin to meet all the other beloved character ("Old man", Shari, Latrice and eventually Stacey).

Without giving too much away, I will say that throughout the book we learn lessons of love, confidence, calming jealousy, standing up for/believing in yourself and your power within.

Looking so much forward to the next installment of this series and thank you again Nicholas Wolfe for the advanced copy!! I thoroughly enjoyed it and I know you will, too!!

This was fantastic, the best fantasy book I've read all year.

The world and magic systems are very interesting and serve the story well. The plot is a mysterious character-driven gripping adventure. I read this one in two days and, to be honest, I could have read it in one sitting if I had the time.

I loved seeing the protagonist grow and change, he has an amazing character arc and development.
The other characters, even the small ones are all super interesting and they are all important to the story, I loved seeing their fight and their resilience. I hope we get to see more from them in the next book. I love the female characters in this book so so much, especially Latrice, what a queen!

Also one of the things I loved most was the fighting and training scenes, they were done in such an amazing way, it felt like watching a movie. And THAT ENDING, WHAAAAT? all the reveals at the end are fantastic and I can't wait to read the next book.

Thank you so much to Nicholas Wolfe for giving me the chance to read this ARC. I was completely pulled in from the very first chapter.

I got the opportunity to ARC read this amazing Dark Fantasy, Debut novel - The Precursors: Shatter by Nicholas Wolfe.

It has been so long since I've read a GOOD fantasy novel, and I believe this one just got me out of my fantasy book slump. This book was amazing. You get a training arc, an understanding of the main character’s backstory, deep philosophical messages that will change your brain chemistry and understandings on so many things and very much closed door romance that fits the story.

You feel like you are going on a journey with the main character, you feel what he feels, you see what he sees, you hear what he hears and the same goes for all the other characters, it’s almost like you’re there with them. The way new characters were introduced into the story was amazing. I never had to think to myself “wait, where did this person come from?. The author did such a wonderful job with the story, the character development, the romance, the chemistry, the action, the cryptic messages, everything was just so perfectly and beautifully written. And I can't wait for the rest to come.

I was lucky enough to read an arc of this book and this is everything I love about a sci-fi/fantasy. It took over my personality and I feel sorry for my husband who has put up with me telling him how amazing this book is for the last few days 🫣🥰

The characters were all amazing and I was able to connect to them so watching them grow throughout the book was beautiful.

Nicholas Wolfe's writing style is also top tier. It's not overly complicated like some fantasy books so it was easy to follow along but still kept me hooked. I genuinely couldn't put the book down. He also made the magic really easy to follow without it being boring.

The romance in the book was subtle and but the right amount emotion to it which just made it perfect.

I was hooked from the first chapter and Luca will hold a special place in my heart.

The ending had me choking. I love a cliffhanger WHEN they are written well and Nicholas Wolfe can write a cliffhanger 👏🏻👏🏻 I NEED the second book now..please and thank you.

Please pre-order this book or grab a copy when it is released later this month 🧡

Such a shame! In a lot of ways it was a 4 & 5 star book I loved Luca & Shari relationship! So much of it was sweet & I loved their past together & how they saw each other as theirs!

The big problem I have is one of the main characters what's a sexual predator, only kissing & undressing two characters when they were drunk & after one of them said no, she waited for the next time they were drunk & took advantage of them again.

& the other person she took advantage of later started crying afterwards & the sexual predator admitted that she knew that the person did not want to go as far with them as they did, but took advantage of them anyways.

both victims in question were teenagers, & the assaulter was in her mid-20s, both teenagers were hiding & know only her & were relying on her for shelter & a place to stay. & her actions were seen as totally fine in this book.

ARC Review – Shatter by Nicholas Wolfe
4.5/5

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Wow. This book came so close to perfection for me!

Shatter follows Luca, a sheltered prince with the rare ability to “touch the power.” On his 18th birthday, he’s kidnapped, whisked away into the forest, and told that his life must change—because someone wants him dead. In hiding, he trains to become a warrior, and once ready, he’s released into the world under a false identity. Though unsure of his purpose, Luca soon gathers a found family and sets out to fight the darkness lurking in the kingdom.

This story is packed with action, adventure, a unique and exciting magic system, humor, and even a touch of romance (which was a delightful surprise!). Wolfe’s writing is engaging and fast-paced—I honestly had to force myself to put it down or I’d have read it all in one sitting.

Luca is described as someone readers will “love to hate,” but I found him to be an absolute sweetheart. The female characters, in particular, stood out as powerful and resilient, which was a joy to read.

The only reason this wasn’t a full 5-star read for me was a mid-book section that dives into a monologue about “the one true God.” While I respect the author’s personal story and understand why those themes were included, the scene felt a bit like a sermon. As someone who isn’t religious, I felt slightly uncomfortable with the implication that non-believers are still children of God—it didn’t feel like it was coming from a character so much as from the author directly. That said, I recognize this will resonate deeply with other readers, and it didn’t detract significantly from my overall experience.

Now, for a (light spoiler) side note: Justice for Latrice!! I was picking up on some polyamorous vibes and fully expected that direction, so I was a little disappointed when Latrice was left out of the dynamic between Luca and Shari—especially when Shari gets to kiss both of them. I’m holding out hope for Latrice’s happiness in the sequel (Storm, I’m looking at you).

Overall, Shatter is a phenomenal debut that delivers heart, depth, and originality. If you love fantasy with emotional stakes, rich worldbuilding, found family, and romantic threads, this book needs to be on your radar.

I read for the vibes and the vibes were ✨ Captivating ✨

Woo was this book a wild ride. I have not read such a high fantasy book like ever? & I’m happy I read this one.

The action scenes?? Yes. I was yelling at the book like I was watching a movie. & the fantasy elements are explained thoroughly enough to not leave the reader confused.

The book has so many quotable moments that I had to annotate. There were times I loved and despised each and every character. & I don’t necessarily agree with the relationship dynamics, I can understand it. Each character had growth that could be related to and felt realistic. The pacing slowed a bit in the middle, but it definitely picked up again.

The way the book ended? I kept turning the page hoping there was more. As I said before the book is a wild ride, but a captivating one.

I received this book as an ARC and are leaving a review voluntarily.

Believe it or not . I was in the same room as the author when writing some of this book . I was told the whole story over several cups of coffee and about 8 hours of talking and I was instantly a fan and a believer.
Whose power will take over? . Can they be used together ? Or will it even matter ?
This is the story you have been dreaming about being written so you can enjoy another tale and another adventure.

To the author . I love you brother . This is just the beginning

Thank you for the ARC!
This was such a fun, fast-paced read!

The Precursors: Shatter is a character-driven fantasy and a strong introduction to the series that perfectly sets up book two.

Prince Luca has spent his life confined to the castle, training and struggling with his magic. But on his 18th birthday, everything changes—and not in the way he expected. The world-building was immersive, the twists were constant, and the plot? Yes, please. I was surprised again and again.

If you love magic, secrets, friendship, survival, and strong character growth, The Precursors: Shatter is for you. I’m already looking forward to book two! 🙌🏻

Nicholas Wolfe has truly outdone himself with "The Precursors Shatter," transforming real-life troubles and profound questions into an absolute masterpiece of a story that will leave you on the edge, desperately wanting more. This book isn't just a read; it's an experience, a journey into the depths of an author's brilliant mind, and frankly, an inspiration.

The writing in "The Precursors Shatter" is nothing short of absolutely amazing and intricate. Wolfe weaves together beautifully twisted plots with such skill that you find yourself constantly surprised and delighted by the turns the narrative takes. The prose is rich, evocative, and perfectly crafted to draw you deeper into the world he has created. From the very first page, the intensity grabs you, compelling you to sit on the edge of your seat, devouring each word, wanting to read more, and yearning to know more about the fates of its characters and the secrets of its universe.

What truly elevates this book beyond a typical thrilling read are the parts where it connects to real-life questions and profound wonderment. There are moments that force you to pause, to just sit there and ponder, to relate to the characters' struggles and the overarching themes in a deeply personal way. I found myself re-reading a couple of parts, not because they were unclear, but precisely because of how much they made my mind process what I had just read, forcing me to chew on the implications and reflect on my own perspectives.

"The Precursors Shatter" deserves far more than a mere 5-star rating; it has ultimately become one of my favorite books I have ever read, a true standout in a sea of literature. Nicholas Wolfe has crafted something truly special, a book that resonates long after the final page is turned. Consider me officially part of "the lost ones," forever eagerly awaiting whatever incredible story he conjures next.

I had the pleasure of ARC reading this story. This book has great detail to both scenery and characters. The story itself is wonderfully crafted, and it felt as if I was there watching the events unfold. There's plenty of action, lots of emotion, and many relatable things nestled between these pages. I can't wait to read book 2!

The pacing was perfect and at no time was I bored. The use of magic in this story is worked in beautifully. I've read stories where it was forced in or too much emphasis was put on that versus the humanity of the characters. This was blended just right. For fantasy readers, this is a MUST READ.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So grateful I got the chance to ARC read Shatter! From the very first chapter, I was completely pulled into the world Nicholas Wolfe has built. It’s intense, immersive, and honestly so hard to put down.

I really connected with the characters and loved watching them grow throughout the story. They felt real, flawed, layered, and easy to root for. The way their relationships developed felt super natural, and I appreciated that nothing was rushed.

The close door romance? So well done. It was subtle but emotional, with just the right amount of tension. It added to the story without taking the spotlight away from the main plot.

There were a few twists early on that had me gasping, and I’m so here for that. Wolfe really knows how to keep you guessing, and I loved not knowing what was coming next.

The magic system was another standout for me. It’s really unique and has so much depth. I feel like we’ve only just started to understand it, and I can’t wait to learn more in the next book.

And the ending… WHAT. NO. I was not ready for that. I need Book 2 like, yesterday.

If you’re into character-driven sci-fi/fantasy with cool magic, some mystery, and emotional depth, definitely give this one a shot. It’s easily one of my favorite reads of the year.

Still thinking about Shatter the Precursor by Nicholas Wolfe Huge thanks to Nicholas for the ARC—I loved getting to dive into this early!

Luca, but let’s be honest every character, completely stole the show for me. His growth throughout the story was so well done—funny, flawed, and unexpectedly full of heart. I laughed more than I expected, and those emotional beats hit. Watching him slowly let his walls down? Loved every second.

I’m so invested in where this journey is headed next… book two can’t come soon enough.

Description

In Shatter, Nicholas Wolfe’s first book in a new series, we follow Luca, the sheltered son of an

extremely powerful ruler (both his father, X'avion, with his raw power, Potentia, and his mother,

Yuna, with her precision-based abilities, Certus) and an extraordinary force (both his father, and

a being of infinite power); on the eve of his 18th birthday, Luca is violently ripped away from his

home, hidden by his mother for reasons unknown, and through an impossible journey will be

transformed from naive and spoiled prince to ruthless survivor trained by a long lost grandfather

and to finally discover dark truths about both his kingdom and his family.

Good Points:

Wolfe's use of a dual magic system adds depth and complexity to a very complex and nuanced

world. The differences between the two types of magic are well defined, and Wolfe's

philosophical exploration of this idea makes for a very interesting read. The magic system isn’t

provided 'ready made' - we as readers get to 'learn along with Luca' about how both Potentia (raw

elemental) and Certus (precision-based, or the ability to affect the fabric of reality) work;

therefore we get to experience through Luca's eyes the nuanced way these two types of magic

work together.

Luca undergoes an extraordinary transformation throughout this entire novel, from being

arrogant and inexperienced to humble and strong. Luca’s great-grandfather played a tremendous

role in his growth, however, both in terms of how he treated him and how he felt about him. The

overwhelming sorrow of having lost (in a manner of death) his mother and being thrown away

from his father put so much emotional pressure on me and made me emotional for the storyline

itself and everything about it. The relationship between Luca and his grandfather was one of

being judgmental, terse and ruthless but at the same time having a lot of impact on the

progression of the storyline.

The pacing of the entire story was great with the prologue Introducing all of the mystery

elements and their importance to the storyline. Transitioning from castle life to training in the

forest to being a resident of Last Stop was a very seamless transition and well done. The pacing for revealing the tyrannical regime of the kingdom and Luca’s individual stake in it was very

well done without having so much information dumped at one time.

Other key characters, such as Luca’s friend, Shari, who is a complex and fierce character, the

kind innkeeper, Latrice, the wonderful and loyal blacksmith named Bron all add depth and heart

to the storyline as a whole. Each of these characters support Luca and bring him closer to the

realization of who he was as a person and what he was going to become as a person.

Thematic elements of Control vs. Power, Truth vs. Deceit and Identity vs. Duty run through out.

In addition, Luca's struggle between the concept of his father as a King and tyrant, adds a level

of moral ambiguity to his character. In addition, the loss of those chased away or broken under

the King's rule (the "lost"), ties all of the characters together.

Areas of Improvement:

While the Prose is functional, it can seem sporadically jarring, between lyrical scenes and

simple, utilitarian Prose. Additionally, in early chapters, some of the Dialogues seem to be more

Exposition and stereotypical Fantasy Banter. Furthermore, There is first of all, Luca's internal

voice, whereas, his External Prince Voice tend to contradict one another, maybe this was

intentional, but it does create a feeling of inconsistency with the reader.

The majority of the story is written in a very close POV to Luca, which works very well when

capturing his travels. However, there are some instances where emotional aspects of other

characters, can be expanded upon outside of how Luca experiences them.

The Magical System is good, but not much has been done with the kingdoms, histories and

religions. Some examples are, the "Precursor" terminology has not yet been explored but there

are readers who will want to know what that means.

While the pacing of the previous chapters has been swift and intense due to Luca's rigorous

training regimen, the pacing of town life and the intrigue surrounding him has slowed down

significantly after the end of these sequences. While the inclusion of romantic tension towards

Latrice has been handled well, there are concerns that this may have taken away from the

primary focus of the book: that of the assassin and Luca's hunt to find him.Exceptional Features:

Grandfather — A scene-stealer who shows up in almost every scene and adds significant depth to

it through his no-nonsense style of parenting, tough love, and wisdom.

Action Scenes: The quarter-staff martial arts training and combat scenes are very vivid and

kinetic, making them feel real and as though you are right there. The water dragon approaches of

martial arts are also very well conceived and imaginative.

Emotional Impact:

Luca's discovery regarding his mother's seemingly tragic fate and the

tyrannical reign of his father create a powerful emotional payoff for the reader, offering excellent

incentive for a sequel.

Final Thoughts:

Nicholas Wolfe's The Precursors: Shatter is an excellent first book in what will clearly be an epic

fantasy series that fuses traditional fantasy themes with innovative concepts and immense

emotional power. Additionally, Nicholas Wolf's ability to create character-driven storytelling,

coupled with his talent for developing systemic magical systems, gives me great confidence in

his ability to deliver a compelling and powerful story.

Though it is not yet 100% polished, the narrative drive, interesting world-building and a

protagonist readers will root for will keep the reader interested. Readers who enjoy authors such

as Brandon Sanderson (for magic systems) and Robin Hobb (for rich characters) will likely enjoy

this book.

The book is rated 4 out of 5 stars and is highly recommended for fans of epic fantasy, including

those who like political intrigue, magic systems with philosophical depth and training arcs. The

book is a great start to a series with tremendous potential to continue, and the excerpt indicates it

is just the beginning phases of development.

I am very excited about the sequel, as Luca's impending confrontation, revelation and probable

revolution have been set up by the story. Additionally, unanswered questions regarding the

Precursors, the assassin, and the sheer corruption of the king will provide for an exciting and

long-running series to come.

So grateful for this ARC!!!

This book was unapologetically brilliant. The Precursors: Shatter is one of those rare fantasy books that makes you feel like you've just lived through an entire season of a prestige television show. It genuinely was a journey, every interaction and every moment was calculated and used masterfully as a literary tool to convey something of importance to the reader while also keeping it incredibly relatable, natural and well-paced. The aesthetics took me back to my days of watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, Karate Kid and the Blue Eyed Samurai but much more nuanced and darker themes.

Nicholas Wolfe really took a simple overarching story and built upon it so well, I could not recommend this enough.

**Spoilers ahead**

The magic system is so simple yet so limitless. I love how with each chapter we uncover more of the potential of the Certus and Potentia powers. I also loved the idea that magic users have to think about choosing what kind of magic to perform (e.g. midst a fight) in order to keep a secret or reveal which power they have inherited.

Let’s start with Luca, our protagonist. From spoiled prince in chapter one to a mature and detached rooftop-leaping, staff-wielding, powerful legend. His growth is Simba coded to the core, royal blood, a tragic backstory, and was obi wan kenobi'ed by a mentor ("old man" or I like to call Rafiki). "Old man" can’t wield power but somehow his legacy is of much importance to the story and I can't wait to see how that unfolds. That said, I adored how age appropriate Luca was. He makes impulsive decisions, is awkward around emotions, gets flustered with fashion — he’s a teenager! And it shows.

The plot is a non-stop, character-driven fantasy adventure. We start in a palace, crash into the woods (cue: samurai training montage), hop into towns and marketplaces where stealing bread matters more than wielding blades, learn about the cruelty and corruption of the monarchy, and end up deciphering magical books that require soul-level concentration to even read. It’s not just high-stakes, it’s relatable stakes. You learn about the world not just through epic quests, but through kind strangers, market bartering, and honest conversations.

I absolutely loved our trio, Luca, Latrice, and Shari. They are such a beautiful portrayal of intimate friendships, sacrifices, one sided love but also mutual understanding, maturity, respect and care for one another. Their found-family dynamic is gold and I truly feel part of their family because it all centres around the concept of feeling 'lost'. It's so beautiful because even though they were all 'lost' for so long, they continued to grow in their respective areas, performed their duties and kept going so the 'one true God' could place them together when they were ready and were needed by the rest of their kingdom.

Latrice is my queen. Her inner strength and her compassion is admirable. Even Shari recognises that Latrice could have had Luca while Luca knew not what had become of Shari... but instead she chose to do good. And that good led to their new home, their new family. It's a running theme in this book and it's incredibly inspiring.

And with Shari, I need more of her. That hardened exterior, the quiet resilience. She’s been through it, and you feel it. It makes her silent presence powerful and oh my gosh her combat skills and mastery with the blades are so intriguing.

In honesty, all the fight sequences in general are so well crafted and executed on paper. I love the water dragon dance, Luca's understanding of the dance changing from offence to defence, the element of water being factored in instead of storm or air and learning how these elements interact with each other was such a wonderful experience.

The magic system is layered like an ancient scroll. The idea that only those touched by spirit or trained in focus can read magical texts in genius, and holds such a unique parallel to the real world. The moment when Luca’s mother’s faith contrasts with his detachment is another genius depiction. You choose belief here, it’s not inherited. Spirituality isn’t a gimmick; it’s a lived choice.

AND THE TWISTS. The blades. The shadow tentacles. The moment you realise “he can’t heal while the blade touches him.” The political schemes. The SPACE TRAVEL?? The REPLICATION? FLYING THROUGH STORMS???!! That final chapter on page 455 of the Kindle edition, I was screaming. Genuinely. This book foreshadows so much and then hits you so hard when it all comes together.

Also, let’s talk about how smart the writing is. It never drags, never over-explains. A whole revelation will be tucked into one line of dialogue like,

“I told her about fighting the King’s Hand.”

That’s it. No reaction paragraphs, no info-dump. Just trust. And then, later when it matters, the reader already knows it's been relayed. Everything in this book matters.

This book really isn't just an adventure, it’s a journey. Of growth, of resilience, of found family, faith, failure, and fashion mishaps lol. The pacing is breakneck but never rushed. Every town introduces new magic, new people, and new hearts. The structure feels like classic fantasy, but every element adds depth and breaks clichés. Even characters we meet 70% in (Stacey!!!) have purpose, heart, and charm.

Final verdict:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I haven’t felt this immersed since my first watch of ATLA. I need the next book immediately. And maybe a deep breath. And a therapy session. Because wow. Just... wow.

I found finishing this book challenging for several reasons; from the writing style, to character execution and my inability to prepare for themes that occurred throughout the book due to an intentional choice to forgo content warnings.

The premiss of the story is well written; with the authors initial direction easy to see
the underlying tensions are well placed and the world detail is thorough and extensive
The early chapters work hard to set up future long term plot
The martial and weapon detail is also extensive and easily manages to capture the numerous fights and fight centric scenes throughout the book.

That being said the lack of emotive writing makes capturing the true feelings and emotional depth of the characters a significant challenge
if the author applied half the descriptive prowess he applies to his martial and fighting scenes to more emotion based writing, the quality of both the story and the characters would increase exponentially

The author is determined to create a near unrivalled, powerful and infallible hero by displaying his capacity to master anything he puts his mind to regardless of lack of training or lack of time.
This is inclusive of any challenges faced which miraculously are resolved by the combined MMC determination and ability to miraculously be just as strong as he needs to be for every task put to him.
This does unfortunately result in a constant underlying theme of male power fantasy as well as some significant plot holes and overall 2 dimensional hero due to a lack of displayed emotional range, intensity or emotional and psychological growth(despite experienced intensity or traumas) outside of rage of sexual attraction to any of the female written characters.
Lucas's redeeming characteristics seem to be his endless mastery of every challenge, the automatic attraction to him by every encountered women and his ego

despite individual skills, knowledge, successes, capabilities, traumas or tribulations the overall end result and ongoing theme for the 3 main women in the book seem to be objectification and the reduction of their overall character and emotional range not directly related to the main male character as well as an overarching dependency each woman develops on him throughout the book which results in an underlying theme of saviour complex only further promoted by the lack of significant positive male characters within the book as well. Whether this is due to a shortened life e.g bron or a short relationship e.g storm the readers can clearly see what feels like an intentional removal of any competing male characters so as to monopolise and centralise any female characters to the MMC -to the detriment of both story and character development due to untapped potential.

Overall, this book leaves much to be desired
So much untapped potential that could explode this world and story into an amazing adventure

Rating
⭐⭐⭐.8 /5 - (rounded up to 4 for GR)

Firstly, I want to thank Nicholas for reaching out and asking if I would like to read his ARC & giving me the opportunity to read to provide an honest review.

We follow the MMC Luca, a Prince who has never left his home. Luca is a spoilt boy with magical abilities inherited by his parents who are you extremely powerful. As Luca becomes of age his world turns upside down with shock revelations. He learns his life is built on lies & secrets. I enjoyed this angle as it does feel sometimes lots of fantasy books are mainly a FMC in these situations. As the story unravels this is all written from Luca's POV.

The magical aspect of this book I found really interesting. The different sources of power alongside the array of skills and abilities being wielded linked perfectly into the story. The source of power was really intriguing. The training scenes within the first quarter and the fight scenes are gripping. The way they are written you felt the flow of movements & the emotion behind it.

Moving onto the romance, now I did love the development of the relationship in this book. Childhood friends to lovers in a world with so much turmoil was a nice added touch & is subtle. My issue with this romance was around the spice scenes. I just didn't personally like the way it was written. It doesn't give too much away in these scenes but I just felt the wording used lost the intensity for me.

Within the story Luca makes friends. Which is a great character development. I really loved the aspect of "being lost" and building a revolution & found family from the betrayal and hardship they've endured. I really however could not understand why they all kissed each other and all got naked together to sleep.I can understand the vulnerability of that situation, I saw the angle of body empowerment for a particular character, for me though I just didn't feel the need for it to happen/spoke about as much as it did.

Overall I really enjoyed the story being told surrounding magic & the world they live in. There were parts in this book that shocked me and kept me turning the page. I need to know where this will lead for Luca as this leaves us on a cliffhanger ✨
