Flora is a new student at Poplar Elementary, and the girls in her class aren't making her feel welcome. She's also the only girl on Tower Road, aside from her annoying little sister. And worst of all, Flora is the only member of her Freckle Club. Blech! Will Flora ever make any new friends? Who will move into the new house at the end of Tower Road? Will Flora find members for her club? Will school stink forever?
Good book for 2nd-3rd graders, I favorited this fiction book because I think its an easy read that has a lot of themes students can relate to at that age (making friends, feeling like an outcast, building community) and does not have a very complicated plot.
I could actually see a couple ways to use this book in the reading classroom. The first is on a unit of character traits and feelings. Because the book is about how the main character feels about school and is heavily influenced by the way kids at school treat her and others, it is heavy on descriptive language and I saw a lot of idioms. That brings me to the next way I would use this- to strengthen an ELL student's vocabulary and comprehension. I also noticed that each chapter had an illustration that embodied the main idea of the chapter, further supporting an ELLs comprehension when their fluency is not very high.
This book is about adjusting to a new school for one little girl in third grade. The main character really has a bad attitude throughout most of the book, but she changes in the end and makes new friends.
Cute book. In my work with elementary kids this is quite relevant. Being the new kid in class is always hard particularly in third grade. Shows a good example of the anxiety of young kids.
