Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵, c. 1584 – June 13, 1645), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke or, by his Buddhist name, Niten Dōraku, was an expert Japanese swordsman and rōnin. Musashi, as he was often simply known, became renowned through stories of his excellent swordsmanship in numerous duels, even from a very young age. He was the founder of the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū or Niten-ryū style of swordsmanship and the author of The Book of Five Rings (五輪の書 Go Rin No Sho), a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today.

I did enjoy reading this book although it is a work and not a relaxing experience. I study iaido, so appreciate many of the ideas Musashi is talking about, especially his emphasis on awareness, timing, discipline, and mindset. Although written in the context of swordsmanship, many of the lessons feel applicable beyond combat to every day life. He alludes to a samurai code that can be lived outside of the dojo.

It also had interesting parallels with my novel 'Ox Herding,' especially where Musashi discusses the void or emptiness, not so much as absence, but as a state of clarity and understanding beyond fixed thought. Those sections resonated with themes I explore in my own writing.

Despite being centuries old, 'The Book of Five Rings' still feels surprisingly relevant, blending martial philosophy with ideas on self-mastery, perception, and personal development.

A classic book on strategy, philosophy and tactics written in 1645 by Miyamoto Musashi, a Japanese swordsman who was undefeated in over 60 duals. It was written near the end of Musashi's life and was intended as a personal explanation of strategic truth. The volume has subsequently been accepted world-wide as one of the best explanations of how to achieve an honorable and virtuous lifestyle.

The concepts put forward can be applied to essentially all decisions and/or confrontations that one may experience. It is a short, but profound volume that can be references often as one proceeds along their chosen path.
