Alexandre Dumas, born in France in 1802, is one of the most widely read French authors in history. His novels of high adventure have been translated into nearly 100 languages and made into more than 200 movies. A very prolific author, Dumas's published works total more than 100,000 pages.
He died in 1870 and was buried in his birthplace of Villers-Cotterets. In 2002, the bicentennial of his birth, he was reinterred in the mausoleum of the Pantheon in Paris.
"Le Comte de Monte-Cristo," a classic literary tale of revenge, was first published in serial form in Paris, appearing in 18 volumes of the "Journal des Debats" from 1844-1845. It takes place in France, Italy, and the Mediterranean. The theme of the novel extends beyond revenge to encompass hope, justice, mercy, and forgiveness. As the characters of the story reveal their true selves through their actions over the course of the book, the reader also sees romance, loyalty, betrayal, and selfishness.
The unabridged form of this story runs to over 1,000 pages in either French or English, necessitating multiple volumes of this bilingual edition, which is designed to assist those learning French. Un dialog obișnuit atunci când de prin clasa a 5-a până în prezent atingeam în vreun fel subiectul romanului lui Dumas. Îți dai seama ce prost mă simțeam? Da' de astăzi gata! Mi-am spălat cu niște nopți nedormite numele pătat de rușinea ignoranței! Am fost dezonorat, dar mi-am rebilitat numele! Am citit Contele de Monte Cristo și e rândul meu să-i condamn pe toți necărturarii și semidocții din Republică.
Dar, să mă-ntorc în trecut. Prima oară am auzit de cartea asta de la mama, cred… Apoi nu știu cum am prins câteva frânturi dintr-un film, cred… Oricum, ideea e că mi s-a format un 'to do' și o impresie că ăsta va fi romanul romanelor. Atunci, când încă nu-mi prea ocupam timpul cu cititul, mama împrumutase de la o colegă vestitele 3 volume sovietice din Graf de Monte Cristo. Vreo 4 luni m-am trudit să dau gata măcar primul volum, apoi cărțile au stat pe raft, vreo 2 ani. A trebuit să le întorc.
Acum, că tot au apărut într-o nouă colecție accesibilă, am lăsat să aștepte toate celelalte lecturi și am citit romanul. Impresii? Nu încape îndoială că e a doua operă monument citită în 2012 (2013 nu se pune), asta după Mizerabilii. Din 'recenziile' unor prieteni am înțeles că ar fi fost foarte bine s-o citit mai înainte că acum poate să nu mă prindă. Mă bucur să le dărâm convingerea. E o carte formidabilă, un colos al literaturii universale. La fiecare alt nod în firul narativ, Dumas te obligă să pornești în cap scenarii și posibilități, care deseori se realizau. Însă nu poți spune că era previzibil. Aici trebuie să-i apreciez meritul autorului de a crea suspans chiar și în momentele când știi cum se vor desfășura acțiunile. Drept confirmare servește iritarea și enervarea mea când ziarul responsabil de colecția A. Dumas a intrat în concediu după ce a scos al 3-lea volum și abia mai târziu urma să apară ultimul. A fost cea mai urâtă intrare în noul an (din punct de vedere literar, normal).
Multe ar fi de spus, dar astea sunt deja subiecte bine păstrate pentru beții și pilde plicticoase de care mă simt îndatorat să mă folosesc. Până atunci: Tu n-ai citit Graf dă Monte Cristo?!

Deja vreau să uit povestea cărții numai ca să o pot citi din nou, ca și când ar fi prima dată. Povestea este fascinantă și merită cu desăvârșire fiecare pagină! ❤️

Oh... okay...so, this is finally the end. All I can say is that this is the very reason why I LOVE revenge stories. Edmond Dante was a legend and...I don't even have words. All I know is that this is not the end for me. I'll read it again sometime, and again and again and again.

Dans un premier temps, mon intention était de commencer ces notes de lecture avec une liste malicieuse des gaucheries stylistiques qui m’ont déterminé de sanctionner chacun des trois premiers volumes avec deux étoiles.
Je me suis ravisée. Tout d’un coup, je me suis rendu compte que ce n’est pas malgré ces imperfections que j’aime ce roman, c’est plutôt avec. En plus, elles révèlent les habitudes littéraires et le gout d’une époque qui exigeait d’un best-seller beaucoup plus de qualités qu’aujourd’hui
Y a-t-il des pages entières qui tournent en rond, des comparaisons nobles en excès, des phrases embarrassantes par leur pathétisme, etc. etc., etc.? Sans doute. En fin de compte, il s’agit d’un roman feuilleton dont la longueur est essentielle, d’où les inévitables redondances. Et puis, plus d’un grand écrivain a été accusé, au mois une fois, de ne pas savoir écrire. Encore un argument que le roman est beaucoup plus que le style, que son succès demeure souvent dans un je ne sais quoi que la critique s’efforce à dénicher sans trop réussir.
Peut-être la fascination de ce roman consiste dans la création d’un héros exemplaire. Exemplaire dans le sens des contes de fées et des mythes. On a souvent mis en évidence le rapport du roman feuilleton avec la littérature orale – dans le sens que l’auteur est en permanence défié de répondre à l’horizon d’attente du public. Son œuvre change continuellement pour satisfaire cette attente. Un but lucratif qui peut pourtant aboutir à de grandes créations, malgré leurs trames souvent simples et stéréotypes.
Edmond Dantès, un simple marin doué de toutes les qualités qui incarnent le Bien, est frappé par les trois pouvoirs de l’État que le peuple craint et abhorre : l’armée (Morcerf), la justice (Villefort) et l’argent (Danglars). Comme un héros mythologique, il vit une épreuve initiatique qui le lui donne des pouvoirs inimaginables. Cette épreuve est annoncée par l’arrestation injuste le moment même de son mariage (lui déniant le cérémonial habituel vers maturité), est approfondie par la mort initiatique dans le château d’If (où il souffre et apprend) et accomplie par l’évasion équivalant à une renaissance (non par hasard, facilitée par les eaux de la mer). Ainsi devient-il un justicier et à la fois un vengeur, au-delà du bien et du mal, dans les mains duquel les autres personnages deviennent des marionnettes incapables de voir leurs chaînes avant qu’il soit trop tard. Je l’avais comparé à un deus ex machina, mais celui-ci était tout simplement une solution que l’auteur antique utilisait in extremis pour sauver une situation devenue insoluble. Lui, il est le grand maître de cérémonie, qui ne frappe jamais lui-même mais aide les autres se détruire par les mêmes procédés qui ont fait leur fortune. Parfois il recule, parfois il se repent, mais pour la plupart du temps il est inflexible comme la nature, impitoyable comme un Dieu. Même sa générosité est une leçon, car il faut souffrir pour la mériter. Son legs de départ est un don de Pandore pour une humanité qu’il ne pense pas vraiment être capable de se rédimer : « Attendre et espérer ».
Aussi pourrait-on conclure que, plus qu’un héros romantique du 19e siècle, dont il a quand même les attributs – beauté, force, intelligence, ruse, etc., le comte de Monte-Cristo est surgi d’un rêve populaire. Le rêve qu'on a devant chaque injustice, chaque mal qui triomphe: que pour une fois nous ayons le pouvoir de tout venger, de refaire l'équilibre, de remédier toute iniquité. À vrai dire, chacun de nous s'est rêvé, au moins une fois, Monte-Cristo...

La conclusion de cette histoire à rallonge mais un très bon au final.
Malgré le ton over-dramatique qui frise parfois le ridicule, je me suis laissé prendre par l'intensité du récit au point de louper ma station de métro, c'est pour dire ! ;D

Apesar de ser um clássico, comecei este livro com um pouco de receio de ser fastidioso, uma vez que foi escrito no séc. XIX. No entanto, surpreendeu-me muito pela positiva. É uma história em constante ação e absolutamente viciante da primeira à última página! Maravilhoso!

Le comte de Monte Cristo est, dans les termes les plus sincères, un des meilleurs roman jamais écrits. Le comte est un personnage qui fascine sans cesse et les grandes lignes de l’histoire sont de toute beauté. Avec des péripéties accrochantes et excitantes, ce livre est aisément un de mes favoris. Touchant, authentique et philosophique tout en étant légèrement comique pour apaiser la lourdeur du contenu. Quel chef-d’œuvre. Alexandre Dumas était vraiment un écrivain spectaculaire. 11/10

"Le Comte de Monte-Cristo", by Alexandre Dumas
There is a certain feeling you get when you finish a book that you've been reading for the past three and a half months. There is also a specific feeling you get when you finish a 1200-page work by one of your favourite authors. I think everyone should experience these feelings, 'cause they're quite amazing, and so is this book.
In October 2015, I decided to challenge myself. In May, I found out that a TV show I had just finished watching (Revenge, an ABC drama series) was loosely based on this book. The opportunity to borrow it arose and, since I had never read a book with a page length of more than 500, I took it upon myself to read Dumas' novel.
The edition I borrowed was split into 4 volumes. Even though I had put off reading The Count of Monte Cristo for a few months, because I was afraid to commit to finishing such a lengthy book, I still remember being completely fascinated by the first volume and wondering why I didn't start reading earlier. I knew that the story was supposed to be about revenge, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the first volume represents an accurate description of young Edmond, while the other three described his adventures as the Count of Monte Cristo. Throughout the second and third tomes, there were moments when I was really intrigued and read more than usual – I became more captivated with each new small detail Dumas introduced about the life of the mysterious count. This primarily happened during the fourth one, though, as the story was coming to its conclusion. It was fulfilling to follow Edmond as he was getting his revenge, as much as it was seeing him repent in the end. I had to return the edition I had borrowed by the time I reached Volume 4, but I managed to finish reading the last few chapters of it on my Kindle.
What I regret most is that I had to take a break from reading to take my midterms (I was reading Vol. 2 at the time), which made me lose interest in the story for a while, but I soon started reading again and it was great :)
I had forgotten how Dumas and his stories about 19th century France manage to captivate me, which is usually hard for an author to do. The characters have powerful personalities and I really feel like I would have if I had witnessed the events firsthand. It's really hard to be both glad to have finished a book and sad to have left the universe it got you into.

There is a certain feeling you get when you finish a book that you've been reading for the past three and a half months. There is also a specific feeling you get when you finish a 1200-page work by one of your favourite authors. I think everyone should experience these feelings, 'cause they're quite amazing, and so is this book.
In October 2015, I decided to challenge myself. In May, I found out that a TV show I had just finished watching (Revenge, an ABC drama series) was loosely based on this book. The opportunity to borrow it arose and, since I had never read a book with a page length of more than 500, I took it upon myself to read Dumas' novel.
The edition I borrowed was split into 4 volumes. 💙Totul mi-a plăcut la acest volum, cum a început, cum s-au desfășurat lucrurile exact dupa vrerea Contelui de Monte-Cristo și exact dupa cum i-a greșit fiecare, pana la finalul emoționant si fericit pe care fiecare dintre ei îl merita pe deplin!
Am avut mari emoții în acest volum pentru ca pericolul s-a apropiat cel mai mult de Conte si m-am temut la fiecare pas ca ceea ce si-a propus nu ii va reuși si ca va fi învins de dușmanii pe care si i-a făcut pe tot parcursul poveștii. Am avut momente când am crezut ca a mers prea departe, ca a fost cam nedrept, dar m-am înșelat amarnic, pentru ca pana la final mi-a demonstrat ca va pedepsi doar vinovații si ca va face tot posibilul pentru a-i apara pe cei nevinovati.
Daca a fost o pedeapsa care mi s-a părut cea mai potrivita a fost aceea a lui Danglars, el chiar a primit dupa fapta si răsplată, m-am amuzat tare mult aici.
Cat despre Conte? Totul este bine cand se termina cu bine, nu? Nu știu de ce ma asteptam sa ii fie altcineva alături la final, dar ar fi fost prea cliseic, într-adevăr, pe cand acest final chiar a fost unul magic!
Pentru doua persoane mi-a părut rau si acelea au fost Albert si Mercedes, dar cred ca autorul a crezut in a doua șansă in ceea ce ii privește pe cei doi si le-a ales un destin propriu, un destin ales de ei înșiși.
Daca recomand aceasta serie? Da da si de inca o mie de ori da! Este o capodopera care trebuie citita de fiecare dintre noi!

J'ai eu moins de mal à terminer celui-ci que le précédent, peut-être un peu moins de longueur et j'aime les moments où on retrouve, ne serait-ce que rapidement, Mercedes. L'histoire entre les deux jeunes amoureux prend par moment beaucoup de place au détriment du reste de l'intrigue. Même si j'imagine que cela va servir la suite de l'histoire. A suivre donc.

Well...didn't realize when I started this monster that it was over 1200 pages long. I'm not sure I would have had the courage, to be honest. But finish it I did, and I wasn't impressed. Maybe part of the problem was that I thought I had already read this novel years ago, and had a better "memory" of the story. Turns out, I realized within 100 pages that I had NOT read this book, and events were happening differently from the way I thought they should have gone, if that makes sense.
Recently saw the movie of "The Count of Monte Cristo" with Jim Caviezel, and while the production wasn't perfect, it did move quickly and hook me into the plot - and kept me there. Unfortunately, the book didn't follow the film, which was a shame. I know, I know: the book came first, and should be the definitive foundation for any adaptation. But, while the first 150 or so pages were gripping, the next 300 were s-l-o-w, and I almost gave up. Actually, I just kept waiting for the main plot to start moving forward again, but Dumas seemed to enjoy his side plots (and secondary characters) too much to want to get back to the main event. Dumas could really have used a good editor; I wonder if he was paid by the word, as I seem to remember Dickens was? That might explain the excruciating detail of the unimportant wanderings he leads us on...
And, worst of all, the ending was completely unsatisfying and came out of left field. Won't give it away, but much preferred the film's ending. So, started out fine, went downhill from there. Wouldn't encourage anyone to tackle this, except as an exercise in improving French vocabulary.

O IV e último volume do Conde de Monte-Cristo.
Edmond Dantès recolhe todos os seus recibos e é delicioso, mas fica a ideia de que o fim foi apressado. As histórias de Villefort e Mondego correm até ao fim, mas a história de Danglars fica suspensa. Isto não porque o Conde mudou de ideias, mas porque Danglars nunca é apresentado a lidar com a sua nova condição de pessoa com menos dinheiro. Eugénie e Mme. Danglars ficam também com a história suspensa. Edmond e Haydée declaram o seu amor um pelo outro numa página, depois do Conde ter dedicado um mês da sua vida a torturar Maximilien Morrel.
Não é que o fim seja mau, é que por cada página que lemos do Conde a fazer Morrel sentir-se mal só porque o livro tem de ter uma moral porque estamos no século XIX e o autor tem que opinar acerca de filosofia, podíamos ter lido mais uma página a fechar as narrativas Danglars e o autor a dedicar-se a escrever o fim de um livro.

Il fallait bien que cela prenne fin...
Il fallait bien que le Comte fasse ses adieux au Dantès qu'il avait été ; qu'il cesse de désirer ce qu'il avait perdu, qu'il porte son regard vers un ailleurs et que son cœur s'apaise...
Ce personnage universel, cette écriture vive et portée, et cette histoire grandiloquente et pourtant si naturelle resteront avec moi...
Et c'est avec plaisir j'en suis sûre, que je relirai l'histoire d'Edmond Dantés, que je retrouverai en lui les malheurs de l'homme, les caprices d'un destin, et la magnifique et terrifiante vengeance d'un Dieu...

Mi-a plăcut mai mult decât volumele 2 și 3, care, 2 mai mult decât 3, parcă băteau câmpii și tot pregăteau acțiunea care era prea puțină iar evenimentele nu prea aveau loc.
Ca un volum de final, care ar trebui să explice și să concluzioneze multe dintre întâmplări, da, face asta.
Însă pe final, am rămas dezamăgit tare de deznodământul unui personaj. Nu dau nume ca să nu fac spoiler.
Totuși, mi-a plăcut... și am rămas plăcut impresionat.
Ca un volum de final, care ar trebui să explice și să concluzioneze multe dintre întâmplări, da, face asta.

Nu m-am așteptat ca în ultimul volum să fie atît de multă fatalitate. A fost o lectură plină de noblețe, de clasă înaltă, durere și răzbunare, nedreptate și fatalism- totul se desfășoară sub forța implacabilă a destinului sau a providenței divine.
