Breaking News: An Age Gap Romance

Rate this book
As the lead anchor at WWTV, Jillian Taylor has spent years perfecting her bubbly on-air persona. But off-camera, her life is starting to fall apart. Fresh out of a breakup, she’s battling an undiagnosed chronic illness and carrying more than her share in a newsroom that never stops demanding more from her. Jill’s about to break, but she’s doing her best to hide it from her friends, colleagues, and viewers.

Graham Harlowe never wanted to be the boss. As interim CEO of Woodvale News Network, he’s desperately trying to prove he belongs in this role. But no one seems convinced–least of all him. The silver lining? His daughter Olivia, who’s shadowing Jill at WWTV this summer. But the more time Graham spends in the studio, the harder he falls for the star anchor. He wants to be the one person Jill doesn’t have to hold it together around, but she’s the last woman in town he should be falling for.

After one reckless night changes everything, Jill and Graham find themselves in a messy situation. Jill has enough on her plate without adding a scandal, and Graham can’t afford another mistake–not when everyone’s just waiting for him to make one wrong move.

How can the two of them hide their relationship when the whole town is watching?

CEO is absolutely smitten with his news anchor

TW: teen pregnancy, chronic illness, sl*t shaming(light)

Okay I had a feeling I would absolutely love this book and I was right. It was amazing. I’m telling you my trope of the year is when the man is absolutely obsessed with the love interest and is so far gone he would so anything for her. Like tell me that’s not the best trope?
Then add in the fact that he’s the CEO of company she works for? Hot. Anyway. Ten out of ten on that
Also for my chronic illness girlies out there that constantly get overlooked by doctors this one is for you and I hope we all find ourselves a Graham.
The chronic illness rep was 10/10 and the whole doctor situation was so spot on.

Tropes: forbidden love, boss/employee, secret relationship, he falls first, fast burn, spicy

Spice: 🌶️🌶️.5

A big big BIG thank you to Katie Cawood for the ARC!

If Katie Cawood writes it, I will read it. It's that simple!

I fell in love with the Woodvale series last year, so having the chance to ARC read this was so special. I love this story and these characters so much, and Katie's storytelling is a perfect blend of fun and heartfelt. Jill was such a fun haracter in Yesterday's News, so I was so excited to see her get her happily ever after. I loved the storyline relating to her chronic illness and I was so excited to see that representation! Graham is also such a caring person that I think they complement each other well.

Speaking of Graham, I adore him. The relationship he has with his family is so sweet, and I love how much he cares about his family, especially his daughter. You can tell how much he cares about them, even if they are growing up faster than he can keep up. Olivia's got a great support system!

Outside of the romance, Olivia's interactions with Jill had me so excited to see them bonding. Despite their breakup, Xander is such a good friend to Jill. I love how we got to see more of his softer side, especially with his book coming up. And the shenanigans with Chase and Jill's new co-anchor were hilarious (he is my favorite, so I may be a tad biased ;). And I loved Meg and Jill's little inside jokes and their support for each other. Plus, it warms my heart to see everyone in the Woodvale universe finding happiness.

I honestly can't pick which one is my favorite between this and Yesterday's News, but I suppose I'm lucky enough to be able to love two things equally as much! If you haven't started this series, you have plenty of time to catch up before Xander and Abigail's story arrives next year!

I needed a little break from reading fantasy and this fourth installment in the Woodvale series was exactly what I was looking for!

So far in Woodvale we’ve had friends to lovers, single dad, and a second chance romance. When I saw this was going to be an age gap romance I had no idea it would be the 🌶️ spiciest 🌶️ book in the series yet! Ever have fantasies of your CEO boss binding you up with his tie? You’re gonna love this one 😏

Graham and Jillian’s relationship wasn’t all physical though. There were some serious themes that brought out the emotions, including a chronic illness rep and an accidental pregnancy (not the main character). I thought Katie handled these topics with great care, and I loved how supportive the characters were to one another.

While this is the fourth book in an interconnected series, it can easily be read as a standalone. If you like age gaps, workplace romance, and light bondage you definitely need to add this to your TBR!

Breaking News is part of an ongoing series of romance novels set in Woodvale, Indiana. Though it can be read as a standalone, reading previous novels in the series helps you understand character dynamics.

Though I liked Jill and Graham, it was hard for me to believe their relationship was based on anything more than lust. Some plot elements didn't jive for me, and I wasn't convinced that the characters would last.

That being said, I do like Katie's writing style and would read more of her books.

many thanks to Katie for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was intrigued by Jillian when she came up in Yesterday’s News (Book 3 in the Woodvale series), so I’m really pleased she got her own book in Breaking News (Book 4, now available!).

🤫 I have to confess… who is Xander? I had to go back to Yesterday’s News to refresh my memory, as he is the worst in Breaking News 😆 ok, maybe that’s harsh, but he was not my favourite at the start of the book so I’m glad they had an amicable uncoupling very quickly and we could move on to the forbidden / interim CEO x news anchor romance.

💕 There’s a lot to love about Breaking News: I love Chase (MMC of Book 3) bringing his chaotic energy whenever he turned up, with Meghan (FMC of Book 3) not far behind — well she is Jill’s BFF. Jill and Meg’s friendship really shone in this book, and I also loved watching Jill’s relationship with Olivia develop — Olivia is Graham (MMC)‘s daughter and Jill’s intern for the summer — and obv Jill and Graham (Xander who? 😂) were made for each other (especially Graham’s grumpy old man persona 🤣). Graham is also a great dad to his kids and co-parenting with his ex-wife — so I guess he had plenty of practice wrangling unruly children when he took over as interim CEO 😂

As much as I’ve just complained about Xander, I’m looking forward to the next book where he will be the MMC, and the redemption arc he’ll go on (in my view 😂). I know he was set up to make Graham shine - but yeah… not my fav. For now.

This is just such a delightful small town, media empire (for books 3 & 4, teachers / schools for books 1 & 2) series. Thanks for the eARC! 💕

I was so excited for the fourth book in the Woodvale series because of the age gap / secret romance trope. Also, Katie did such a great job of building up Jill’s character in the third book (Yesterday’s News), I was hyped to see where it would go. However, what I think Katie does so well is that despite these are part of a series/universe, one does not feel entirely out of the loop if they just pick one up and begin reading.
If you are someone who eats up the Dream Harbor books, you will love the Woodvale books. I also think Katie‘s books are just 10 times better written with better dialogue and more nuance. With Katie‘s characters, you actually care about what is at stake. There is plot beyond the romance.
As for Graham: 😍🥵😍🥵 He is my favorite MMC Katie has done yet. His multifaceted personality is fascinating. His observational skills are 10/10. His command in the bedroom … uhhhh … I’ll let you enjoy. (And you’re going to get the CEO version of “Who hurt you?!” that will make you weak in the knees.)
Disclosure: I’m entirely lucky to be one of the beta readers for Katie. (Woodvale Smut Sluts for life.) she didn’t ask for this review and I mean every word I say. Put this on your TBR. (Put the whole dang series on there.)

📺 Breaking News by Katie Cawood📱⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Bubbly news anchor Jillian Taylor is juggling a breakup, undiagnosed chronic pain, and doing the work of multiple people. Graham Harlowe is the interim CEO of the Woodvale News Network, a job he didn’t want, but puts him in the position to fall for Jill. How can they navigate their secret relationship with the whole town watching?

OMG I love Graham and Jill! They are freak-y and it starts early! 🥵 but also, like so much caretaking 🥹 As a chronic pain haver - the rep is so relatable. Like I couldn’t get over how much I related to Jill whenever she was talking about her pain and not getting answers. Definitely check trigger warnings for this one, but reading the trigger warnings would definitely reveal the story. I absolutely love interconnected standalones - this series is so fun where you can totally read these and not need to read the others, but you get all the fun lore if you read them in order.

What I'm Starry-Eyed Over:
🤩 Age gap
🤩 Graham is a single dad with shared custody, written so real and honest.
🤩 Secret pining in all the forbidden: workplace and Jill has a boyfriend.
🤩 Graham is Jillian's boss, so extra forbidden.
🤩 The whole morning news, chronic illness, workplace romance combo plot is spot on at captivating our attention.
🤩 The sneaking around at the news station, even if it's just for care-taking.
🤩 Thank goodness the love triangle situation doesn't last long.
🤩 When Graham gives Jillian a ride home.
🤩 When Jillian calls Graham boss, in such a flirty way.
🤩 I love all their flirty interactions.
🤩 And the little touches and glances are written so well.
🤩 We get a few great steamy scenes with a fun vibe--"Dominant but gentle is my entire MO, sweetheart."

What I'm Wishing/Dizzy About:
💫 I don't think Jill would have kept the birthday bracelet.
💫 Olivia, Graham's daughter, is a lot, and I didn't love her.
💫 I would have preferred Graham to be more self-assured.
💫 I really don't like being told about steamy scenes instead of experiencing them.
💫 "Much better." On the hammock?

First off i would like to thank Katie for the opportunity to read & review this gifted E-Arc.

Jillian & Graham
This book was so good. I absolutely loved this small town age gap book. While its about a news network you font get a bunch of news you get the vibes and some behind the scene stuff but its never over done. I loved that Jillian knew what she wanted to do in her life and made it work and wasn't afraid to stand her ground when she had to and i absolutely loved seeing her get the help she needed for her chronic illness. Graham is the definition of Dominate but Gentle. I loved that he knew what was important to him amd worked for it to stay that way & i also loved that he did anything for his kids. I also loved watching him fight for Jillian to get the help she need.

5/5 recommend this book. I don't know what Katie puts into this book but its magic. I love how she writes small town books and the friendships and banter between them. If you need something light hearted then this book is for you.

Something very on brand for me: even though this is book four in the series, it’s the first one I’ve read. Luckily, I didn’t feel like I was missing anything, this one works perfectly as a standalone. That said, I am going back to read the first three, mostly because I need to know who Owen hooked up with, lol.

I loved the chemistry and flirty banter between Jillian and Graham. Their accidental all-night yap session was just so dang cute! I also appreciated how easily Graham could read Jillian and how he pushed her to actually take care of herself.

Graham really went through it in this book.. between Julian, his CEO jon, Reece, and his kids… whew. The man needs a vacation, lol.

The twist with Jillian and Olivia’s relationship was unexpected but something I really enjoyed. It made me love Jillian even more, especially when she didn’t give up with advocating for herself, even when others didn’t believe her pain was real.

I’ll definitely be back for the next book, because Xavier and his attitude have landed him firmly on my shitlist, so here’s hoping he redeems himself in his own story!

📕BOOK REVIEW📕

Happy Release Day to the author 💕

This is book 4 in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. News Anchor, Jillian seems to have it all: a new boyfriend, a great job and the best of friends. Things take a turn when she breaks up with her boyfriend, and her body is exhausted and she needs answers. CEO of the news channel, Graham, has always wanted to know more about the charismatic reporter. When his fifteen year old daughter is mentored by Jill, the two quickly learn much more about each other than they first intended.

This was such a cute read. I wasn’t expecting some of the content in the book-I won’t spoil anything but I actually thought it was written really well, and not something I’ve actually come across in a long time. Jill was honestly just the best. She really was super lovely, especially towards Graham’s daughter. Graham was a little bit grumpy, but on the whole, he was also just loving and caring, especially towards those he loved.
When the two finally give in, I nearly combusted at how darn right bossy Graham was and I was all there for it.

I would defo love to read more from the author, especially starting with book 1 in the series.

While Breaking News can be read as a stand alone novel, it’s part of an interconnected series that is highly worth reading- Katie Cawood does a phenomenal job of writing about “normal” and relatable people in the fictional small town community of Woodvale, Indiana. Breaking News features the story of Jillian Taylor, the news anchor for the local tv station, and Graham Harlowe, former editor of the local newspaper and now the new CEO of the Woodvale News Media conglomerate.
Emotional depth and relatable life experiences are two of the main themes found throughout the Woodvale series which makes for great storytelling, and it’s a home run every time for me.
Some tropes found in Breaking News include: age gap, longtime crush, light BDSM, workplace romance, single parent (of teenagers)
Thank you to the author, Katie Cawood, for the review copy, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I knew very early on that this would become my favorite book in the Woodvale series, and I was not disappointed. Graham and Jillian are so wonderful together. Their chemistry is honest and well-developed, and their love story had me laughing and swooning the whole way through. Excellent side characters add to the story, and deepen the plot brilliantly. I would highly recommend this book, especially if you’ve already read the others in the series. But even if you haven’t, I think it’s a solid standalone.

*Thanks to the author for gifting me this eARC*

Read this in one sitting and I’m so upset about it (because now it’s over) but it was so good I will get over it. Jillian and Graham were so fun to read about. Both characters felt dynamic and fresh while still feeling relatable. The age gap and forbidden romance felt realistic in a way that I don’t read very often. I enjoyed reading about the progression of their relationship, especially since we met them in previous books, and I was so excited to see Xander and Abigail have a story coming too. Katie always pours her heart into these stories and you can really tell!

There aren’t enough good things I can say about this book! #4 in the Woodvale series but can absolutely be read as a standalone. This was one of my most anticipated reads this year and it does not disappoint!! CEO x Employee, age gap, AND single dad ??!?? What more could you want?! Oh spice? It has tons of that! 🙌🏻

I’m not typically a fan of a fast burn, but Cawood does it the right way and kept me engaged the entire time! I didn’t want to put it down and read it within 2 days. Graham and Jillian’s chemistry burns hot and will send all the tingles through you as you read!

Another aspect I really enjoyed was Grahams relationship with his kids! You don’t see alot of single dad books with a dad of teens, and I really enjoyed the dynamic and storyline with his daughter. It felt super realistic.

Overall a great read and I also really enjoyed seeing relationships from previous books in this one! I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in the series.

If you’re looking for a fun spicy read definitely give this book a try!

SOME SPOILERS

This book was a BIT OF ME.
Newsroom - check. Age gap- check. Workplace romance/secret colleague crush 👀 - check.

The way I was rooting for Jill and Graham before anything even happened 😂 poor Xander. (FYI, there's no cheating!)

THE CARE Graham shows is absolutely top tier. Not just for Jill but for everyone in his life. I ADORE HIM.

"I'm Jillian fucking Taylor" is an absolute legend and I was to be her when I grow up. The way Katie wrote in her chronic pain was so real and educational.....I think maybe a doctor or two might need to read this book.

Thank you for giving me the chance to read this and dto catch up with the Woodvale gang once again.
