The Tib Street team are back and better than ever!
I admit I hold this series of books very close to my heart. The Tib Street Ballroom (book 1) and Exit, Pursued by Death (book 2) were my first ever bookmail as a bookstagrammer, sent by the wonderful #marmaladepress and what a wonderful world I was introduced to!
If you are not familiar with the Tib Street Ballroom series, allow me a moment to introduce them. Meet a loveable 1980s Manchester based team of crime sleuths working on cold cases which often have a supernatural twist. The Tib Street Ballroom team work out of an old ballroom and are led by the always hangry Higson. The team are hugely supported by hard working Jen and the at times hapless Lloyd, two competent coppers who have found themselves sidelined to the Tib Street team. Andrew Joyce (Joycie) is introduced in book 1 as a recent transfer into the team and they are informally helped by siblings Peggy and Charlie Swan, with Peggy acting as a conduit and go-between with the dead.
Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but I would recommend reading them in order to enjoy the character development.
Book 3 – Midnight on Hanging Bridge - I cannot give this book enough justice with my words – I LOVED IT!
We join the team as they recover from the aftermath of investigating a haunted theatre stage (book 2), the team are bored, completing tedious cases set by their boss Higson and they haven’t seen the Swan siblings for months, what they need is a little pick me up… Andrew Joyce visits the office “archive room” (where nothing seems to be at rest). Joyce finds a file which it seems Higson has been working on in secret, only Higson hasn’t been seen for a few days at work, so what exactly is going on?
From there the reader is treated to another exciting investigation featuring the 1967 cold-case disappearance of 17 year old Lily Woodhouse, a self-proclaimed medium and minor celebrity of her time, who seems to have gone missing alongside Constable Davey Nash and it appears that Higson was a key witness at the time.
The team soon realise that Higson has gone missing and only they can find him, but as they start to investigate, they realise there is more than meets the eye to this case even to this day and the race is on to find out what happened before someone else gets hurt.
I loved the tension building in this story, focusing more on the relationships between the Tib Street team and the backstory of Higson and his links with Jen which was great to uncover.
The investigation leads the team out of Manchester to the Lakes and then back into the city’s hidden depths which gives the story an adventurous feel as they race to get ahead of their colleagues looking for the same answers. Through their investigation you learn more about each of the Tib Street team and how they tick, I really enjoyed seeing Andrew Joyce step up to lead the team and the contrast and humour that Charlie Swan brings to the teams seriousness is well balanced.
The ending is atmospheric, suspenseful, page turning, heart in your moment stuff and I’ve never been so worried in my life about characters I feel are like friends. The ending…(chef’s kiss) but I can’t say too much about it without spoiling the story, but I did message Keira about it a lot (who knew a Christmas gift could hold so much significance).
I’m heavily invested in this series and I cannot recommend it enough. The writing style is engaging, characters become friends and I can’t wait to see whether we delve deeper into the archive room in the next book.
As I’ve said before on my previous reviews of books one and two, if you like crime / police stories with a supernatural twist these are books for you. It's like Life on Mars the TV show but in book form, funny with perfect 80s cultural references. Grab your copies of the series now. Midnight on Hanging Bridge out this October!
