Eye of the StormWhat is love? Hate? What are blessings and curses? In battle, Philomela takes up the thurisaz rune Chise gave her, and the catastrophe swirling around the Sargant Family crashes to a close. Chise and Elias return home for a brief respite, but Chise must still pay a price for wielding the power of dragons. The rumblings of beasts permeate the shadows... The Hunt is about to begin.
I need to finally give up on reading this series. I absolutely loved the world building and main characters when it started but the story started changing a lot since Chise joined the alchemy school. I kept waiting it to go back and be as good as it was prior but it’s time to come to terms with that not going to happen.
I don’t find the alchemy story lines as interesting and doesn’t make sense to me of why Chise should attend and focus on any of it when they still have so much to learn about the magic world and being a mage instead. There are also SO MANY characters now that pop in and out and varying stories and side stories and it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on. This is a series that would REALLY benefit from a summary and character list at the beginning of each volume.
It took me a long time to get my hands on this. I am glad I was able to before Searchohio closes for a few months.
Not much really happens this volumes but there are seeds planted for what is to come with the Red Dragon. Thought a lot of it what confusing. I don't know if Chise will become involved with that somehow. It is hinted that Rian has some romantic interest in his guardian Torrey, who rebuffs him.
Philomena and Rian also talk, though I am not entirely sure what their conflict was besides their rivalry.
Elias gets jealous but determines he is only jealous when Chise is around certain people.
I am looking forward to the next volume.

Nothing really happens in this book, it's mostly the hints and mystery lore for the arc we just started. But there's something spooky and delightful about it. Solid volume. I also enjoy how all the previous characters and arcs are factoring into this new arc instead of just moving on like many other series does. There's a culmination effect building, seemingly for this arc, that feels like it's gonna pay off big. We'll see. I'm excited to keep reading. (Though I am caught up for now, rip)
