Maybe more like 4.5 stars, but when I tell you this book had me in such a goddamn chokehold I considered giving it 5 stars hahaha. I don't remember what time I started it, but I do know it is 8pm now and I have no idea where the time went. I remember eating dinner, but definitely haven't been drinking enough water.
This was such a fun read. I love how we actually get to see the love interest changing for her and curbing his obsessive/possessive tendencies to a manageable level for our main character. This is a slow burn and I love that not only did it take Wren time to even start falling for him, but that made it clear too that attraction is not affection! THANK YOU!
I do wish that the parents groveled more. We saw some change from the mom, but the fact that they never had her come home for breaks, never listened, and when she comes home at the beginning of the book aren't even there for her??? They just threw her at Bennett thinking all would work out between them? It shows just how much they never thought about her point of view of things only the werewolf one and their son who, granted, had been suffering for 12 years. I just wanted more from the parents.
And the brothers!! They had a close bond and yet we never get to see them and Wren together :( they were her only friends and she essentially had to start over...
This story is character driven, with the plot revolving around the main pair getting closer. I want to mention that even though Wren was fostered by the Wulfs, Bennett never claimed her as a sister and they didn't see each other for 12 years, so this isn't really a step-sibling romance. They really are more like acquaintances with bad blood, from Wren's POV. This is also only told through Wren's POV, WHICH I preferred. I think if I read Bennett's thoughts I'd be more sympathetic and I did not want to be. He needed to change and Wren needed to know he was changing. If we had switched to his thoughts, I think it would color the interactions differently and I didn't want to forget that Wren couldn't smell emotions and lies and just how much lack of communication she went through.
Story-wise there is a lot here that pushes that suspension of disbelief boundary. Like, how is a high school grad (with a few college courses) so damn good at finance and accounting that she was able to save the company billions in just a few weeks??? She was also a horrible assistant. I mean, that's the point, but like if she was his assistant, then who was scheduling his meetings? Because she never took calls lol.
I really find it hard to believe that Wren nor Bennett never came home during holiday breaks at school. For real??
The world also wasn't explained well, we were just thrown in. I think I was halfway through before I realized that shifters were known to humans and that werewolves aren't the only shifters in the world. Actually, besides Bennett freaking out and all the smelling going on, there is little shifter fantasy stuff going on. I would have enjoyed more wolf-time and learning about shifters.
Another important thing to note is that there is no on-page spice. There are some heavy make out scenes, tons of mentions of off-page, with maybe two on page acts that are briefly described. Bennett also has a horrible habit of pinning Wren to walls with her hands above her head. Like... all the time. It honestly got ridiculous.
But yeah, all in all this book had me 100% absorbed into the story and I already have the book featuring Bennett's friend on my TBR. This was my first book by this author and it will not be the last.
